His travels took him across Asia, along the Silk Road and throughout China. He loved Hangzhou so much that he described it as “the finest city in the world”
When Polo finally returned to Venice, there was a war and he was captured (捕获). While he was in prison, he told the stories of his travels to another man there. We decided not to tell the kids that their mother had suffered cancer. They would not be able to enjoy school, friends, their teams, or birthday parties. They’d be watching too closely how she looked, moved, acted, ate, and so on. Marla wanted her daughters to stay children: happy, relaxed, and confident.
In 2009, Marla’s doctor called to tell her that she had early-stage cancer. After several medical operations, she needed eight rounds of chemotherapy (化疗) to clear the cancer found in her body.
Our kids were 8, 9, and 11 at the time, and they understood that their mother was under treatment, but we never told them the news we soon learned from hospital: Marla had the most serious cancer cell, and she had little chance to stay alive. Her doctor directly told her, “Go to live your next 1,000 days in the best way you know how.”
Though she was badly ill, Marla went on running long distances, for her own mental (心理的) fitness, and more importantly, so her kids would see her strong. I knew these miles were a wonder. Marla survived a little more than 3,500 days instead of 1,000. In her lifetime, she celebrated 25 anniversaries (周年纪念日), 57 children’s birthdays, one college acceptances, and two high-school graduations. But the next numbers make me sad; Zero college graduations. Zero weddings. Zero grandchildren.
Marla said to me at the hospital, “No glory (辉煌的) days for us. We almost had the kids out of the house, and now you’re alone. I’m so sorry.” I replied, “Sorry about what?
Though she was badly ill, Marla went on running long distances, for her own mental (心理的) fitness, and more importantly, so her kids would see her strong. I knew these miles were a wonder.
AI has been developing rapidly in recent years. Now, robots are used to fry chicken, make pizzas, prepare salads and much more. AI can invent recipes based on what a kitchen has.
Since technology tends to be expensive at first, restaurants and other businesses are the first ones to use AI kitchen technologies. Over time, prices are likely to fall enough for the home market, changing how homes and society work.
AI kitchens enable cooks to avoid boring tasks such as peeling potatoes or standing at a workstation for hours. It can free up time, allowing people to focus on more important tasks.
However, there are risks to human. Cooking is a good activity that helps with communication but these benefits could be reduced if the human beings don’t join in cooking. Family relationships might suffer without cooking together in the kitchen.
Cultural risks must also be considered. For example, AI could mess up traditional recipes and methods and overlook (忽视) cultural differences. This may result in AI and robot cooks producing less different dishes. Depending too heavily on technology in meal creation may lead to the sameness in taste.
Convenience can come at a great cost, so it’s important to consider the possible social problem that new technologies might bring, especially in areas like food that are closely connected with our everyday lives.
12. Why are restaurants the first to choose AI kitchen technologies?
A. Because these technologies are developed specifically for them.
B. Because they can afford the high costs.
C. Because they want to reduce the need for human workers.
D. Because they want to improve communication among staff.
13 What benefit of AI kitchens is mentioned in the passage?
A. Saving time. B. Saving money on food.
C Reducing kitchen waste. D. Improving family relationships.
14. Which proverb can show the author’s attitude towards AI kitchens?
A. Where there is a will, there is a way. B. Every cloud has a silver lining (银边).
C. Every coin (硬币) has two sides. D. Kill two birds with one stone.
15. What’s the best title for this passage?
