This change started when DSU faced an uncertain future due to budget cuts. In 1984, DSU closed its Springfield campus and the state turned it into a prison. Then a new law was signed to change DSU’s mission to focus on technology in all academic programs. The decision to turn a teacher’s college into a technology-focused university seemed risky. But around that time, the financial giant Citibank that was in need of computer programmers decided to move its credit card operation to Sioux Falls, a city near the university. José-Marie Griffiths, the current president of DSU, explains how the university could shift the focus of talent training to meet this demand. To jump into technology, DSU began with a bachelor’s degree in computer science, using teaching materials from IBM, and built industry partnerships. In the early 2000s, a further step forward came when DSU began to focus on cyber security. In 2004, the National Security Agency named DSU a Center of Academic Excellence in computer security. Enrollment has risen steadily from 867 in 1985 to 3,509 in 2023, with the university now offering 44 degrees, including advanced programs. When Griffiths arrived on campus, DSU had a strong academic reputation but was not known for its research. In 2017, the research and development efforts took a major step forward with the launch of the Madison Cyber Labs, expanding research into significant fields of cyber security, machine learning and AI, among others. DSU is now planning to expand into Sioux Falls, partnering with research centers and launching a cyber academy for high school students. Meanwhile, it is seeking funds to start a new research center for quantum (量子) computing. The advanced academic programs and researches at DSU have created numerous new, well-trained employees for a wide range of companies across the country. Jon Waldman, graduating from DSU with a master’s degree in 2006, started an information security company that has become a massive industry in the US. He credited DSU’s commitment to innovation for keeping its graduates at the forefront of the rapidly evolving cyber technology and security industry. 8. Why did DSU start to make a change? A. The enrollment number decreased. B. The campus facilities were out-dated. C. It was under great financial strain. D. It was short of resources of human talents. 9. What contributed to DSU’s shifting the goal of talent training? A. The requirement from research projects. B. The needs of a company’s business. C. The decision made by the president. D. The partnership with IT industries. 10. What does paragraph 4 mainly about? A. What DSU did to advance its research. B. Why DSU was famous for its academics. C. Who benefited from DSU’s development. D. How DSU conducted its research on cyber security. 11. What is Jon Waldman’s attitude toward DSU? A. Skeptical. B. Confused. C. Supportive. D. Opposed. C 9. B 10. A 11. 根据第一段中“This change started when DSU faced an uncertain future due to budget cuts. (这一变化始于南达科他大学因预算削减而面临不确定的未来。)”可知,当时南达科他大学由于预算削减而面临不确定的未来,即面临巨大的财政压力,因此做出了改变。故选C。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“But around that time, the financial giant Citibank that was in need of computer programmers decided to move its credit card operation to Sioux Falls, a city near the university. José-Marie Griffiths, the current president of DSU, explains how the university could shift the focus of talent training to meet this demand. 根据第四段首句“When Griffiths arrived on campus, DSU had a strong academic reputation but was not known for its research. (当Griffiths来到校园时,南达科他大学有着很高的学术声誉,但并不以其研究而闻名。)”可知,当Griffiths任职时,南达科他大学有着很高的学术声誉,但并不以其研究而闻名,接下来便列举了为推进研究该大学所做的事情,因此A项符合文意。故选A。 根据最后一段中的“He credited DSU’s commitment to innovation for keeping its graduates at the forefront of the rapidly evolving cyber technology and security industry. (他称赞南达科他大学致力于创新,使其毕业生保持在快速发展的网络技术和安全行业的前沿。)”可知,他称赞南达科他大学致力于创新,使其学生处于快速发展的网络安全领域的前沿,因此他持支持的态度。故选C。 D When you ask people to judge others by their speech, a trend emerges: Listeners dislike disfluency. Slow talkers producing loads of ums and pauses (停顿) are generally perceived as less charming. But science tells us there may be even more to disfluency. Disfluencies do not occur in arbitrary positions in sentences. Ums typically occur right before more difficult or low-frequency words. Imagine you’re having dinner with a friend at a restaurant and there’re three items on the table: a knife, a glass, and a wine decanter (醒酒器). Your friend turns to you and says, “Could you hand me the...um...” What would you assume they want? Since it’s unlikely that they will hesitate before such common words as knife, and glass, chances are you’ll pick up the decanter and ask, “You mean this?” This is exactly what we demonstrated through controlled eye-tracking studies in our lab. Apparently, listeners hear the um and predict that an uncommon word is most likely to follow. Such predictions, though, reflect more than just simple association between disfluencies and difficult words; listeners are actively considering from the speaker’s point of view. For example, when hearing a non-native speaker say the same sentence but with a thick foreign accent, listeners don’t show a preference for looking at low-frequency objects. This is probably because listeners assume non-native speakers may have as much trouble coming up with the English word for a common object, like a knife, as for unusual ones and can’t guess their intention. In another experiment, listeners were presented with an uncommon speaker who produced disfluencies before simple words and never before difficult words. Initially, participants displayed the natural predictive strategy: looking at uncommon objects. However, as more time went by, they gained experience with this uncommon distribution of disfluencies. Listeners started to demonstrate the contrary predictive behavior: They tended to look at simple objects when hearing the speaker say um. These findings represent further evidence that the human brain is a prediction machine: We continuously try to predict what will happen next, even though not all disfluencies are created equal. 12. Which statement does the example in paragraph 2 support? A. Pauses usually follow uncommon words. B. Slow talkers tend to pause more. C. Fluent speakers are unlikely to pause. D. Active listeners only guess difficult words. 13. What does the author say about the non-native speakers? A. They can be understood easily. B. They actively put themselves in others’ shoes C. Their vocabularies are limited. D. Their disfluencies are a little less predictive. 14. What does the experiment in paragraph 4 show? A. Simple things are difficult in some cases. B. Listeners can adjust predictions accordingly. C. Distribution of disfluencies is changeable. D. Disfluencies in communication can be avoided. 15. Which of the following can be the best title for the article? A. Pauses Coexist with Hesitation B. Human Brains Have the Power to Predict C. Active Listeners Simplify Talks D. Disfluency Says More than You Think 【答案】12. A 13. D 14. B 15. 根据第二段中“Ums typically occur right before more difficult or low-frequency words. Imagine you’re having dinner with a friend at a restaurant, and there’re three items on the table: a knife, a glass, and a wine decanter (醒酒器). Your friend turns to you and says, “Could you hand me the...um...” What would you assume they want? Since it’s unlikely that they will hesitate before such common words as knife, and glass, chances are you’ll pick up the decanter and ask, “You mean this?”(“嗯”通常出现在更难或低频的单词之前。 故选A。 根据第三段“This is probably because listeners assume non-native speakers may have as much trouble coming up with the English word for a common object, like a knife, as for unusual ones and can’t guess their intention.(这可能是因为听众认为,非母语人士可能很难想出英语单词来表示一个常见的物体,比如一把刀,也很难想出不寻常的物体,而且无法猜测他们的意图)” 可知,作者认为非母语者的不流畅之处很难预测到。 根据第四段“However, as more time went by, they gained experience with this uncommon distribution of disfluencies. Listeners started to demonstrate the contrary predictive behavior: They tended to look at simple objects when hearing the speaker say um.(然而,随着时间的推移,他们获得了这种不常见的不流畅分布的经验。听众开始表现出相反的预测行为:当听到说话者说“嗯”时,他们倾向于看简单的物体)”可知,第四段中的实验显示的是听众可以相应地调整预测。故选B。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“But science tells us there may be even more to disfluency.(但科学告诉我们,不流畅表达传达的信息可能更多)”、最后一段“These findings represent further evidence that the human brain is a prediction machine: We continuously try to predict what will happen next, even though not all disfluencies are created equal.(这些发现进一步证明了人类大脑是一台预测机器:我们不断尝试预测接下来会发生什么,尽管并非所有的不流畅都是相同的)”以及文章内容可知,本段主要介绍了听者不喜欢不流畅的表达,说话迟缓且话中有大量的“嗯”和停顿的人通常被认为不那么有魅力。 In every culture throughout time, the kitchen has had a powerful influence. Numbers and variables danced confusingly across the page, laughing at her every effort. At school, Emily was known for her artistic talents, but math had always been her weakness. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn’t make sense of it. Her struggles only worsened in the 10th grade. The pressure to keep up with her classmates grew, and the poor grades shook her confidence. Then came Mr. Jenkins, her new math teacher, who sensed her frustration and offered to help her after class. Emily was initially resistant; the idea of spending extra hours on a subject she hated seemed like a punishment. But — she unwillingly agreed, knowing something had to change. Mr. Jenkins didn’t dive straight into problems. Instead, he asked about her interests. When Emily spoke passionately about her painting, he smiled. “Math is like art, Emily. It has patterns and beauty if you know where to look.” Doubtful but inspired, Emily listened as he began to explain concepts through visual examples. He used colors and shapes, turning abstract numbers into something almost tangible (有形的). For the first time, math seemed less like a foreign language and more like a puzzle waiting to be solved. However, progress was slow. Weeks passed by, minimal improvement, and Emily’s patience wore thin. A particularly difficult quiz left her in tears. She was convinced that she was sure to fail. Mr. Jenkins said, “Remember, Emily, every artist starts with a blank canvas (画布). Masterpieces aren’t created overnight.” Encouraged by his firm belief, Emily pushed on. She began to see the connections between the steps, how each solution followed a logical path. Small victories in practice problems gave her some hope. Mr. Jenkins was always there, celebrating her successes, no matter how minor. Gradually, Emily’s confidence grew with Mr. Jenkins’ help. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Emily’s heart raced when the results day arrived. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Gradually, Emily’s confidence grew with Mr. Jenkins’ help. She found herself approaching math problems with a newfound curiosity instead of anxiety. The once confusing numbers and symbols began to become patterns she could understand. Mr. Jenkins continued to teach her in his unique way and Emily started to enjoy the challenge. When it’s time for her to take the mid-term test, her once hesitant hand moved steadily across the paper. The joy she felt when a solution clicked into place was something she had never expected to experience with math. Emily’s heart raced when the results day arrived. She sat in the classroom, her hands trembling slightly as she received her test paper. Her eyes widened in disbelief as she saw the grade – a solid A. Tears of relief and happiness welled up in her eyes. She looked up at Mr. Jenkins, who stood at the back of the classroom, watching her with a proud smile. In that moment, Emily knew that she had not only conquered her fear of math but also discovered the power of perseverance. 她的父母找来退休教师Mr.Jenkins帮助她。 1】She looked up at Mr. Jenkins, who stood at the back of the classroom, watching her with a proud smile.(运用了who引导的非限制性定语从句以及现在分词短语作状语) 【高分句型 2】In that moment, Emily knew that she had not only conquered her fear of math but also discovered the power of perseverance.(运用了that引导的宾语从句以及“not only…but also…” 1. C South Dakota University (DSU) made a bold decision 40 years ago that transformed a small normal college into a top high-tech university. A. Skeptical. B. Confused. C. Supportive. D. Opposed. D When you ask people to judge others by their speech, a trend emerges: Listeners dislike disfluency. Slow talkers producing loads of ums and pauses (停顿) are generally perceived as less charming. But science tells us there may be even more to disfluency. Disfluencies do not occur in arbitrary positions in sentences. Ums typically occur right before more difficult or low-frequency words. Imagine you’re having dinner with a friend at a restaurant, and there’re three items on the table: a knife, a glass, and a wine decanter (醒酒器). Your friend turns to you and says, “Could you hand me the...um...” What would you assume they want? A Pauses usually follow uncommon words. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
