The Secrets to Know before Visiting Iceland
Here are top tips for travelers to seize on Iceland’s quality of life, some taken for granted by local residents. If you are curious about them, you can click here and get the following information.
Peaceful place, top of the world
Ever since the publication of the Global Peace Index, Iceland has ranked top as the world’s safest country. Entire years have passed with zero homicides taking place and the crime rate is one of the lowest in the world, according to the think-tank Institute for Economics and Peace.
Tap water is as pure as bottled water
As always, remember to drink plenty of water. But do it straight from the tap. Iceland’s spring water is notably pure, without smell or taste. Don’t be fooled by the big stacks of bottled water at the supermarket. It’s a tourist trap and an environmental waste — essentially tap water in a plastic bottle.
Heating and electricity are cheap
Iceland can be painfully expensive-island nations with a small population tend to — but there is one thing Icelanders pay less for than other Europeans: hot water and electricity. In the capital region every house has geothermal heating. All this abundance of hot water is the reason for the leisure of soaking in local baths known as sundlaug. The outdoor pools were originally built to teach swimming, but play a much larger cultural role in modern Iceland.
Wildlife is abundant if you know where to look
Look up. To the wild side of Iceland. Iceland is home to millions of migratory birds, gathering along the shoreline, wetlands and lakes. And what do they have to do with quality of life you ask. Well, study suggests being in the environment of many bird species contributes to greater happiness. Tweet, tweet.
1. What can we know about visiting Iceland?
A. In Iceland, people can travel with a sense of security.
B. In Iceland, people pay more for than other Europeans.
C. In Iceland, every house has geothermal heating.
D. In Iceland, the outdoor pools serve nothing but swimming-teaching places.
2. If you plan a trip to Iceland, what can you get?
A. Feel the purity and sweetness of its water.
B. Enjoy bathing in heated warm pools there.
C. Watch birds gathering only along the shoreline and wetlands.
D. Get involved in the large population there.
3. Where is the passage probably taken from?
A. A textbook. B. A website. C. A brochure. D. An advertisement.

KUNMING — Several Chinese hospitals have found their edge in the country’s growing health drinks market by prescribing herbal formulas that target minor symptoms, from calming nerves and aiding sleep to promoting healthy hair.
This herbal tea is based on a well-known Chinese medicine formula designed to treat symptoms of insomnia and neurasthenia (失眠和神经衰弱). The tea includes sauteed jujube kernels (炒红枣仁), dried lily, poria fungus and albizia bark (茯苓菌和合欢树皮). Each dose of herbs is individually packaged and can be brewed or boiled for easy consumption at home. “The bags of dried herbs are not available for purchase on the market. To obtain them, individuals must obtain a prescription as they are tailored to specific syndrome differentiation (辨证论治),” Wan Xixi, deputy director of the hospital’s medical administration department, explains.

In recent years, an increasing number of health-conscious people have developed a strong interest in such medicinal herbal tea drinks. “I bought five doses of each type. Modern problems require modern solutions. When it comes to the lack of windows or desirable views, American company LiquidView has an interesting idea — a virtual window. Consisting primarily of a series of high-resolution (高清晰度的) digital panels and a kit to make them blend perfectly into any space, like a normal window, the virtual window also offers users access to a content library featuring beautiful locations all over the world. Accessible via a special smartphone app, the library offers an immersive (沉浸式的) experience according to your local time.
“Each view is filmed by National Geographic level photographers with feature film motion picture cameras, over a 24-hour period. It records an entire day in impressive 8K videos,” the LiquidView website claims. “To add to the unpredictability (不可预知性) of looking out a window, views are improved with photo-realistic content that appears randomly throughout the day.”
Each smart window comes with a handy kit, one or several high-quality 4K Sony screens (depending on the chosen model), and access to the company’s content library. In terms of pricing, it was announced that a single-panel VirtualWindow costs $25,000, while the larger, three-panel option can be bought for $100,000.
“Like so many people, I have lived in homes and worked in offices with no views or terrible ones,” LiquidView CEO and filmmaker, Mitch Braff, said. “Improving people’s lives by giving anyone a beautiful view was the reason for starting LiquidView. Our windows literally transform rooms.”
Sadly, LiquidView Virtual Windows won’t be able to help with space ventilation (通风), and they come with an added cost in electricity. However, for some people this could be a small price to pay for the chance to wake up to virtually any view imaginable.
“I believe with the Virtual Window, LiquidView offers a pathbreaking solution that can completely transform how you experience a space,” said Noah Kaplan, founder and president of Leon Speakers. “This product has the potential to solve some of the biggest challenges that architects and designers face. Imagine being able to provide a view of anywhere in the world, in any space. It’s mind-blowing really.”
8. Where are the views in the content library from?
A. They are selected from classic movies.
B. They are computer-generated videos of various landscapes.
C. They are recorded by photographers over a 24-hour period.
D. They are live streams from real windows around the world.
9. How much do two single-panel Virtual Windows cost?
A. $25000. B. $50,000. C. $75,000. D. $100,000.
10. Why did LiquidView create Virtual Windows according to Mitch Braff?
A. To encourage people to get out and travel.
B. To awaken people’s interest in photography.
C. To offer high-quality screens to homes and offices.
D. To transform living space by providing beautiful views.
11. What might LiquidView do to improve Virtual Windows?
A. Add more tools to the kit. B. Make the windows larger.
C. Develop more electricity-saving panels. D. Collect more views in the content library.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. C

The Center for Digital Thriving (繁荣) , a new research and innovation center, was opened at Harvard Graduate School of Education. Its work seeks to change understanding of how young people and everyone else can thrive in a technology-filled world. The Center was founded by researchers Carrie James and Emily Weinstein, who have worked for more than a decade to explore the emerging (新兴的) digital landscape that young people are facing today and to answer questions about what it’s like for teens to grow up with social media.
“We can’t get around the simple truth that technology greatly shapes teens’ experiences today,” says Emily. “Technology is hugely important to students’ lives, learning, relationships and development. It matters for their well-being (幸福) and sense of self.”
Emily and Carrie explored these issues most recently in their book Behind Their Screens, which documents just how much adults have been missing in their understanding of how teens interact with the screens that surround them. “The main feature of our research has been slowing down and really listening to teens as they talk about growing up with today’s technologies,” says Carrie. “Putting teens’ voices and stories at the center has been transformative.”
The book shows adults are worried about teens and their screen time, noting that parents need to get rid of the “us-versus-them” mindset. Instead, learning how to take an “us-and-them” approach helps build connection and healthy tech habits. Emily advises against strict rules about social media use or blaming the current adolescent mental health problems entirely on social media or devices. Families, she explains, would be better off if parents discussed their child’s social media use in more positive ways. Be more of a coach, she says, and less of a judge.
In their previous research, Emily and Carrie found that text messages that were marked “read” without replies from the receiver were a common anxiety source for teens. Young people today need better access to the resources that can help them navigate the ups and downs of adolescence in the digital age. The Center is not only providing those resources but putting them where young people are, creating opportunities for all young people to thrive as technology continues to develop.
12. What message does paragraph 2 convey?
A. Technology helps improve students’ learning.
B. Technology affects teens’ growth to a great degree.
C. Teens should balance their online and offline time.
D. Adults should pay more attention to teens’ happiness.
13. What is special about Emily and Carrie’s research?
A. It focuses on the younger generation’s thoughts.
B. It observes the development of a number of teens.
C. It shows technology’s impact on teens’ mental health.
D. It stresses adults’ role in teens’ technology experiences.
14. What does Emily suggest adults do?
A. Set a tight time limit on teens’ phone use.
B. Exercise parental authority all the time.
C. Guide teens’ online activities positively.
D. Encourage teens to stay away from their smartphones.
15. Why does the author mention the issue in the last paragraph?
A. To show mental problems during adolescence.
B. To encourage researchers to study teens’ mental health.
C. To present the necessity to provide help for teens.
D. To prove the resources shared by the Center are helpful.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. C

第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The Spring Festival celebrations were in full swing at the crowded temple fair. Colorful lanterns hung above the streets, and the air was filled with the aroma of fried dumplings and sweet candied fruits. Among the joyful crowd was a little boy named Leo, a 7-year-old American visiting China with his parents. Clutching a rabbit-shaped lantern, he stared in awe at the dragon dancers twisting through the crowd.
Suddenly, a firecracker exploded nearby. Terrified, Leo dropped his lantern and rushed backward. When he looked up, his parents were nowhere to be seen. The sea of strangers in red coats and furry hats swallowed his tiny figure. Panic surged through him as he pushed through the crowd, tears streaming down his face.
Meanwhile, Leo’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carter, realized their son was missing. Madly, they searched the stalls selling paper cuttings and calligraphy brushes, shouting his name. But their voices were drowned out by the drums and laughter.
Just as despair began to set in, a young volunteer in a bright yellow vest noticed Leo crying by a sugar painting stand. The volunteer, a girl named Wenwen, knelt down in front of Leo. She noticed his tear-streaked face and the fear in his eyes. “Hey, little boy, are you lost?” she asked gently in English, trying to hide her own concern. Leo took a few steps back, his heart pounding. He had been warned by his parents about strangers, and although Wenwen seemed kind, he was still cautious. “My mommy and daddy...” he hesitated, looking around desperately.
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Wenwen understood the situation immediately. She showed him her volunteer badge (徽章).

Wenwen kept talking to him to distract him from his fear. Finally, they arrived at the spot where Leo had lost sight of his parents.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Wenwen understood the situation immediately. She showed him her volunteer badge. And she said, “I work here to help people like you. Do you remember where you last saw them?” Leo hesitated for a moment but then slowly nodded. He pointed towards the direction of the dragon dance area. Wenwen took his small hand, and Leo tensed up at first. But Wenwen’s warm and reassuring grip made him feel a little more secure. Leo gradually relaxed and even managed to give her a small smile. They passed by stalls of traditional handicrafts and folk art, and Wenwen used her knowledge to explain the meanings behind each item, making Leo feel more connected to the place.
Wenwen kept talking to him to distract him from his fear. Finally, they arrived at the spot where Leo had lost sight of his parents. And there, Mr. and Mrs. Carter were waiting anxiously. When they saw Leo, they rushed towards him, their eyes filled with relief and gratitude. “Thank you so much, Wenwen,” Mrs. Carter said, hugging Leo tightly. Leo looked up at Wenwen, and this time, his eyes were full of trust and thankfulness. The experience had turned a scary situation into a memorable lesson about kindness and the power of human connection.

In the capital region, every house has geothermal heating.
C. In Iceland every house has geothermal heating.

Struggling with insomnia, Guo Xiaofan, a 26-year-old resident of Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province, recently brewed the dried herbs at home and found it a great alternative to drinking milk tea. “The first sip tasted a bit strange but as I continued drinking, it tasted quite good,” she says.
In recent years, an increasing number of health-conscious people have developed a strong interest in such medicinal herbal tea drinks. “I bought five doses of each type. With medical insurance, the total bill came to less than 100 yuan ($13.9) , which I think is very reasonable. After drinking them, I felt the effects were good,” Huang, an employee from Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, says.
Yunnan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine recently launched five herbal medicine formulas for drinking. On the first day of the market release, 10,000 doses were sold. In addition to hospitals, many pharmacies, including the established brand Beijing Tong Ren Tang, have seen a boost in herbal tea sales.
According to data from iiMedia Research, the Chinese herbal drinks market reached 41.16 billion yuan ($5.64 billion) in 2023 and is expected to surpass 100 billion yuan in 2028.
4. What does the underlined word “edge” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Side. B. Advantage. C. Suburb. D. Margin.
5. What do we know about the herbal drinks?
A. They are healthy and popular. B. They can cure severe disease.
C. Their price are extremely expensive. D. They can be bought everywhere.
6. Why there are more and more people choose herbal tea?
A. Because herbal tea is cheaper than milk tea.
B. Because herbal tea tastes better than milk tea.
C. Because people care more about their health than before.
D. Because people would like to chase this trend.
7. What’s the author’s attitude towards the future of the Chinese herbal drinks market?
A. Unclear. B. Promising. C. Critical. D. Neutral.

A. $25,000. B. $50,000. C. $75,000. D. $100,000.
10. Why did LiquidView create Virtual Windows according to Mitch Braff?
A. To encourage people to get out and travel.
B. To awaken people’s interest in photography.
C To offer high-quality screens to homes and offices.
D. To transform living space by providing beautiful views.
11. What might LiquidView do to improve Virtual Windows?
A. Add more tools to the kit. B. Make the windows larger.
C. Develop more electricity-saving panels. D. Collect more views in the content library.

Emily and Carrie explored these issues most recently in their book Behind Their Screens which documents just how much adults have been missing in their understanding of how teens interact with the screens that surround them.
