Scientists have recently discovered that Andean condors, some of the world's largest birds, hardly
flap (their wings while flying. The birds can weigh up to 33 pounds.Their wings, when spread
out,are up to 10 feet (about 3 metres). The birds are found in the Andes Mountains along the Pacific
coast of South America. The birds'main food is the bodies of large dead animals.
To study the birds while they were in the sky,the researchers put special tools, which could record
every turn the birds made in the air and every flapping of their wings,on those birds. They learned most
of the condors'flapping came when the birds were taking off.Once in the sky,the birds flew for very long
periods of time without flapping. In fact, they only flapped their wings for 1%of the time when they were
in the air.One bird even flew for over five hours without flapping.
Flying without flapping is important because birds burn energy every time they flap their wings. For
birds as big as the condors,a lot of flapping will mean they will need a lot of food. The birds'flying isn't
magic. They use the feet that hot air rises to keep themselves up.
The scientists reported even though all of the condors they studied were young, they already knew
how to find the air currents (and move between them. The tools were designed to separate from the
birds after about a week. But sometimes they could fall into nests on huge cliffs (in the middle of
the Andes Mountains, and researchers needed to make great efforts to get there.

A.Andean condors'flying speed.
B.Andean condors'flying patterns.
C.Andean condors'special wings.
D.Andean condors'value for studies.
(
)8.Why is flying without flapping important to the condors?
A.It can make them safer.
B.It can help them fly faster.
C.It can make them relaxed.
D.It can help them save energy.
(
)9.What does the underlined word "they"in the last paragraph refer to?
A.The tools.
B.Air currents.
C.The researchers.
D.Andean condors.
)10.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
