old baby bear on Monday night.
"I didn't have a choice.It was cold and rainy.He was just sitting there in the rain,not moving.I
couldn't leave him out there,"Hancock said."He seemed to be alone and dying. He was hardly moving
at first and I thought he was dead.Hancock said he waited a few minutes to see if the baby's mother
would return, but he soon decided the bear was too ill to be left behind.
The baby bear, weighing just five pounds, looked certain to die.Hancock decided to save him and
carried him for more than two miles.
"I was carrying this little lifeless bear in my arms, wondering if he was going to make it,"Hancock
said."He took one breath. He was fighting to live on.
Hancock posted a photo of the bear on Facebook, asking for advice about where to take him.Someone
saw the photo and told Hancock that he should take the bear to a wildlife centre near Salem,Oregon.
Hancock then drove him there. The baby bear received good care and was recovering well but he could
never be returned to the wild.
Some animal experts believed the hiker was out of line.Taking wildlife out of their natural
environment was not allowed.Corey Hancock should have paid S6,000 for what he did.But he told
everyone about what he did, saying he would do it again.
