B Twenty years ago, a few of Los Angeles’ West Adams residents and their friends had a novel idea: take a jackhammer to break up the asphalt (沥青) and cement at their neighborhood’s 24th Street Elementary School to plant shade trees and a garden. They created the Garden School Foundation to support the project, which school and foundation officials believe was a farsighted decision. Elizabeth Hall, the foundation’s head of development, says the 24th Street School gardens are critical to teaching climate literacy (素养) to 453 pre-kindergarten through fourth-grade students. An outdoor learning center sits at the heart of the 24th Street Elementary School garden. which now covers a thriving acre with woods of shade trees, an orchard with kumquats, apples, pears and pomegranates and too many vegetable, herb and flower beds to count. 24th Street Elementary is “special,” said Principal Veronica Brown. The foundation developed the curriculum for outdoor learning, which is integrated into regular classroom science lessons as well as other subjects, particularly language arts. Students learn where their food comes from, how to grow it and cook it, and then recycle the waste into compost (肥料) . “These things should be copied at every school,” she added. This spring the school was named a California Green Ribbon School-the only one in the Los Angeles Unified School District. The award recognizes campuses that have reduced their environmental impact and costs, improved the health and wellness of students and staff, and provided an effective environmental education. What’s the best thing about the garden? Earlier this year, three third-graders said they liked the sunflowers and eating fruit, particularly mulberries. They were pleased that “the juice stains your clothes.” The goal of the garden program is to create lifelong sustainability habits in the students and their families, Hall said. Last year, the school turned 16,000 pounds of cafeteria food waste into 1,600 pounds of compost. “Once kids understand how to do it and why, they like the ickiness of it,” said Ann Dang, the school’s compost manager. “They dig into the compost. And push their parents to do it at home.” 24.What was the main purpose of establishing the Garden School Foundation? A.To promote climate literacy education. B.To improve overall campus environment. C.To attract community involvement. D.To try out a novel school design. 25.What can be inferred from Principal Veronica Brown’s words? A.More outdoor learning centers should be built. B.The curriculum is centered on outdoor learning. C.The school sets a good example for other schools. D.The project helps students’ academic performance. 26.What’s the main reason for 24th Street Elementary to win the award? A.Its large garden size. B.Its environmental efforts C.Its unique curriculum. D.Its excellent students. 27.How does the compost program influence students’ families? A.It strengthens family bonds. B.It decreases school fees. C.It raises test scores. D.It boosts household recycling. C In an article published on July 1st in Nature Medicine, Dr Herr and his team at MIT describe seven people with below-the-knee amputations (截肢) who can now walk normally with the help of surgery and new robotic prostheses (假肢). For the first time, Dr Herr says, people have been able to walk with bionic legs — mechanical prostheses that mimic their biological counterparts — that can be fully controlled by their brains. As the most important muscles in a complete leg come in pairs, so that one muscle can stretch while the other contracts, the goal of Dr Herr's procedure was to replicate (复制) this structure in those who had undergone amputations. The surgery, therefore, involved sewing together the ends of two sets of leg muscles in the remaining part of the participants’ legs. Each of these new connections forms a so-called agonist-antagonist myoneural interface, or AMI. This, in effect, replicates the mechanisms necessary for movement as well as the perception of the limb's position in space. Traditional amputations, in contrast, create no such pairings in place of the ones removed. Dr Herr's team then gave each of the participants a battery-powered prosthesis developed in their lab, along with a small electrical controller. The prosthesis was connected to the AMI by electrodes on the skin, such that the controller could pick up the AMI muscle movements and translate them to movement in the prosthesis. Once the robotic leg was linked to the AMI, nerve signals travelling from the brain to the muscles and back allowed the participants to have full control of their new legs. Though prostheses controlled by nerve signals have been designed before, these were typically only controlled by the participants' brains during certain movements, such as when the foot was off the ground, in the “swing phase” of walking. But in the latest study the participants were in charge at all times. “No previous study was able to show this level of brain control, ” says Dr Herr. Dr Herr's “promising and beautiful” approach could be the end goal for below-the-knee amputations. But it remains to be seen if it could achieve similar results for people with amputations involving knees or upper-body limbs. Nor will everyone be able to get the AMIs they need. Decades after his amputation, Dr Herr has only enough muscle mass to construct an AMI for a robotic ankle, but not a whole robotic foot. He says he is considering it regardless. Even if he cannot get the full effect, it may prove a sensible step. 28.What is the purpose of creating AMI during the surgery? A.To reduce the risk of infection in amputees. B.To connect the prosthesis directly to the electrodes. C.To sew together the ends of two sets of leg muscles. D.To replicate the muscle pairing mechanism of complete legs. 29.What can we learn from the passage? A.Dr Herr is determined to further his research. B.Everyone will be able to get the AMIs they need. C.Prostheses controlled by nerve signals is a new design. D.Robotic Prosthesis is suitable for people with upper-body amputation. 30.Which would be the best title for the passage? A.AMI Muscle Movements B.Below-The-Knee Amputations C.The Full Brain-Controlled Bionic Legs D.The Rapid Development of Prostheses D Driving has significant downsides, including pollution, traffic, and crashes. In 2023, an estimated 40,990 people died in car crashes in the U.S., with millions more injured in nonfatal collisions (碰撞). These crashes often result from human errors, such as drunk drive, distraction, or misjudgment. Despite efforts to mitigate these errors through traffic enforcement and safer road design, human mistakes remain a major issue. Self-driving cars, like those developed by Waymo, offer a promising solution. Waymo’s robotaxis have driven 33 million miles, primarily in San Francisco and Phoenix, and have been involved in 62% fewer police-reported crashes, 78% fewer injury-causing crashes, and 81% fewer severe crashes compared to human-driven cars. These figures might even understate the safety benefits, as other drivers are often partially responsible for collisions with autonomous vehicles. While incidents like the Cruise robotaxi accident, where a human driver hit a passer-by who was then dragged by the autonomous vehicle, raise concerns, human drivers also cause terrible accidents. The key question is whether autonomous vehicles are safer overall and can be made even safer through careful monitoring and innovation. Data from California shows that most crashes involving Waymo and Cruise vehicles were low-speed and often caused by other drivers. Although it’s too early to determine the full impact of self-driving cars on fatal crashes, the potential for reducing human error is significant. As more autonomous vehicles hit the road, the number of crashes caused by human drivers could decrease, leading to broader societal benefits, including reduced healthcare costs and fewer legal issues related to traffic accidents. The Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association has proposed a policy framework to speed the adoption of self-driving cars, advocating for clear federal guidelines and a national safety data base. While autonomous driving technology is still in its beginning and faces challenges like navigating snow and ice, policymakers should work to remove regulatory barriers and ensure safety standards are met. In conclusion, while human drivers won’t disappear soon, self-driving cars have the potential to significantly improve road safety and reduce the economic and social costs of traffic accidents. 31.What does the underlined word “mitigate” in paragraph 1 mean? A.Ease. B.Expand. C.Explain. D.Embrace. 32.What can we infer from Waymo’s robotaxi data? A.Robotaxis are unbelievably safe. B.They are safer than human-driven cars. C.They might cause more severe crashes. D.Other drivers are unlikely to hit robotaxis. 33.What is one challenge mentioned for self-driving cars? A.They cannot operate in big cities. B.They are not accepted by the public. C.They are too expensive to produce. D.They may struggle in snow and ice. 34.What does the author imply in the last paragraph? A.Self-driving technologies have brought about profits environmentally. B.Human drivers will be replaced by self-driving cars in the near future. C.Policymakers should focus on developing self-driving technologies. D.Self-driving cars have a promising future with great benefits. Once you are invited to list the jobs that robots cannot do, you might first think of doctors and teachers. We can easily imagine robot cleaners and factory workers, but certain jobs demand human touch and innovation. However, are we underestimating (低估) the ability of robots? 35 Also, some patients might be more at ease sharing personal issues with a machine than a person. 36 American education expert Sarah Thompson believes so. And she even speculates (推测) on the year when robots will take over the classrooms: 2030. 37 And teachers will function more like assistants. Intelligent robots will read students’ facial expressions, body movements and maybe even brain signals. Then they will customize the teaching accordingly. It’s not a widely-accepted view and it’s unlikely that robots will ever possess true empathy (同感) and the capacity to deeply bond with humans as another human can. 38 In some regions of the world, there is a shortage of art and music teachers and around 10-18 percent of students in middle schools lack access to these courses. This problem could be partly solved by robots since they can offer instruction anywhere. Teachers all over the world are leaving because it is a difficult job and they feel overworked. Perhaps the question is not “Will robots replace teachers?” but “How can robots help teachers?” Office workers can use software to do things. 39 If robots could cut the time teachers spend marking homework and writing reports, teachers would have more time and energy for the parts of the job humans do best. A.Teachers will be completely replaced by robots. B.Teachers consume much time doing jobs unrelated to teaching. C.Will there be a possible place for robots in the field of education? D.Much time that teachers spend in teaching can be saved by robots. E.But one thing is clear: A robot teacher is better than no teacher at all. F.Some cases show that robots already outperform doctors at treating illness. G.She forecasts robots will take on the key task of providing educational resources. The Impact of Social Media on Adolescents Using social media has become a routine activity for most young people. In recent years, the number of young people using social media has increased dramatically, so a large part of their social and emotional development is occurring while they are on the Internet. Social media allows young people to achieve online many of the tasks that are important to them offline: staying connected with friends and family, making new friends, and exchanging ideas. Some schools successfully use blogs as teaching tools, which has the benefit of improving skills in written expression and creativity. At the same time, social media helps them get what they want, increase their knowledge and confidence in their academic performance. While social media provides many benefits, it can also have a negative impact on young people, both physically and mentally. It is easy to become addicted, and research shows that students who spend too much time on social media can suffer from poor sleep, eye fatigue, negative body image, depression, anxiety and more. Research also indicates that there are frequent online expressions of offline behaviours, which have introduced problems such as cyberbullying and online harassment (骚扰). Using social media becomes a risk to adolescents more than they can realise. When people go on to websites, they leave evidence of their visits. This ongoing record of online activity is called the “digital footprint”. One of the biggest threats to young people on social media is to their digital footprint and future reputations. Young people who lack an awareness of privacy issues often post inappropriate material without understanding that “what goes online stays online”. As a result, future jobs and college acceptance maybe put in danger by inexperienced clicks of the mouse. 40.Why is a large part of young people’s social and emotional development occurring on the Internet? 41.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? 42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why. ▶Young people’s improper digital footprint may have an impact on cyberbullying and online harassment. 43.How do you make full use of social media to better your life and study? Please give one or two examples. 根据第二段“They created the Garden School Foundation to support the project, which school and foundation officials believe was a farsighted decision. Elizabeth Hall, the foundation’s head of development, says the 24th Street School gardens are critical to teaching climate literacy (素养) to 453 pre-kindergarten through fourth-grade students.(他们成立了花园学校基金会来支持这个项目,学校和基金会的官员都认为这是一个有远见的决定。伊丽莎白·霍尔,基金会的发展主管,说24街学校的花园对于向453名学前班到四年级的学生教授气候知识至关重要)”可知,建立花园学校基金会的主要目的是促进气候素养教育。故选A项。 25. 根据第四段中“Students learn where their food comes from, how to grow it and cook it, and then recycle the waste into compost (肥料) . “These things should be copied at every school,” she added.(学生们学习他们的食物来自哪里,如何种植和烹饪,然后将废物回收到堆肥中。“每所学校都应该效仿这些东西,”她补充说)”可知,校长维罗妮卡・布朗认为学校的这个项目应该被其他学校效仿,即该校为其他学校树立了好榜样。故选C项。 26.细节理解题。根据第五段中“The award recognizes campuses that have reduced their environmental impact and costs, improved the health and wellness of students and staff, and provided an effective environmental education.(该奖项旨在表彰那些减少了对环境的影响和成本,改善了学生和员工的健康,并提供了有效的环境教育的校园)” 可知,第24街小学获奖的主要原因是它在环保方面的努力,包括减少对环境的影响、降低成本、改善师生健康以及提供有效的环境教育。故选B项。 27. 根据最后一段““Once kids understand how to do it and why, they like the ickiness of it,” said Ann Dang, the school’s compost manager. “They dig into the compost. And push their parents to do it at home.”(“一旦孩子们明白了怎么做和为什么这么做,他们就会喜欢这种恶心的感觉,”学校的堆肥经理安·邓说。“他们挖掘堆肥。并敦促他们的父母在家里做这件事。”)”可推知,堆肥项目让学生了解堆肥并敦促他们的父母在家也进行废物回收利用,这会促进家庭的废物回收。故选D项。 C In an article published on July 1st in Nature Medicine, Dr Herr and his team at MIT describe seven people with below-the-knee amputations (截肢) who can now walk normally with the help of surgery and new robotic prostheses (假肢). A.AMI Muscle Movements B.Below-The-Knee Amputations C.The Full Brain-Controlled Bionic Legs D.The Rapid Development of Prostheses 【答案】28.D 29.A 30.C 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据第二段中的“As the most important muscles in a complete leg come in pairs, so that one muscle can stretch while the other contracts, the goal of Dr Herr's procedure was to replicate this structure in those who had undergone amputations.(由于完整腿部中最重要的肌肉是成对存在的,一块肌肉伸展时另一块收缩,因此Dr Herr手术的目标是在截肢者身上复制这种结构)”可知,创建AMI的目的是为了复制完整腿部的肌肉配对机制,即一对肌肉一个收缩、一个伸展的自然运动机制。故选D项。 29. 根据最后一段中的“He says he is considering it regardless. Even if he cannot get the full effect, it may prove a sensible step.(他说无论如何他都在考虑尝试。即使无法达到全部效果,这可能也是一个明智的步骤)”可知,Dr Herr即使知道自己可能无法获得完全效果仍考虑接受手术来看,他对自己研究的应用前景充满信心,并愿意亲自尝试。由此推知,他对继续推进研究是坚定的。故选A项。 30. 根据第一段中的“In an article published on July 1st in Nature Medicine, Dr Herr and his team at MIT describe seven people with below-the-knee amputations (截肢) who can now walk normally with the help of surgery and new robotic prostheses (假肢). For the first time, Dr Herr says, people have been able to walk with bionic legs — mechanical prostheses that mimic their biological counterparts — that can be fully controlled by their brains. D Driving has significant downsides, including pollution, traffic, and crashes. 根据第一段划线单词句中“These crashes often result from human errors, such as drunk drive, distraction, or misjudgment. Despite efforts to mitigate these errors through traffic enforcement and safer road design, human mistakes remain a major issue.( 这些事故通常是人为失误造成的,比如酒后驾驶、注意力分散或判断失误。尽管努力通过交通执法和更安全的道路设计来mitigate这些错误,但人为错误仍然是主要问题)”可知,通过交通执法和更安全的道路设计是为了减轻或缓解人为错误带来的影响,“ease”有“减轻;缓解”的意思,符合语境。故选A项。 32. 根据第二段中“Waymo’s robotaxis have driven 33 million miles, primarily in San Francisco and Phoenix, and have been involved in 62% fewer police-reported crashes, 78% fewer injury-causing crashes, and 81% fewer severe crashes compared to human-driven cars.( Waymo的无人驾驶出租车已经行驶了3300万英里,主要在旧金山和凤凰城,与人类驾驶的汽车相比,警方报告的撞车事故减少了62%,造成伤害的撞车事故减少了78%,严重撞车事故减少了81%)”可知,Waymo的自动驾驶出租车与人类驾驶的汽车相比,涉及的警方报告的碰撞事故少62%,造成伤害的碰撞事故少78%,严重碰撞事故少81%。 根据第五段中“While autonomous driving technology is still in its beginning and faces challenges like navigating snow and ice, policymakers should work to remove regulatory barriers and ensure safety standards are met.(虽然自动驾驶技术仍处于起步阶段,面临着在冰雪中导航等挑战,但政策制定者应该努力消除监管障碍,确保达到安全标准)”可知,自动驾驶技术仍处于起步阶段,面临着像在冰雪中行驶这样的挑战。故选D项。 34. 根据最后一段“In conclusion, while human drivers won’t disappear soon, self-driving cars have the potential to significantly improve road safety and reduce the economic and social costs of traffic accidents.( 总之,虽然人类驾驶员不会很快消失,但自动驾驶汽车有可能显著改善道路安全,降低交通事故的经济和社会成本)”可知,虽然人类司机不会很快消失,但自动驾驶汽车有很大潜力显著提高道路安全,并减少交通事故的经济和社会成本。 Once you are invited to list the jobs that robots cannot do, you might first think of doctors and teachers. 35.上文提到“However, are we underestimating (低估) the ability of robots? (在世界某些地区,艺术和音乐教师短缺,大约有10%到18%的中学生无法接触到这些课程。)”,说明有的地方教师是短缺的。E项“But one thing is clear: A robot teacher is better than no teacher at all. (但有一点是明确的:机器人教师总比没有教师好。)”与下文相呼应,指出实在没有人类教师可以使用机器人代替,故答案选E。 39.上文提到“Perhaps the question is not “Will robots replace teachers?” but “How can robots help teachers?” Office workers can use software to do things. (或许问题不在于“机器人是否会取代教师”,而在于“机器人如何帮助教师”。)”,接下来需要提出一个人类教师需要机器人帮忙的案例。B项“Teachers consume much time doing jobs unrelated to teaching.(老师们花费大量时间做与教学无关的工作。)” The Impact of Social Media on Adolescents Using social media has become a routine activity for most young people. Also, I join online study groups to discuss academic topics and share knowledge with others. 根据文章第一段“Using social media has become a routine activity for most young people. In recent years, the number of young people using social media has increased dramatically, so a large part of their social and emotional development is occurring while they are on the Internet.(使用社交媒体已成为大多数年轻人的日常活动。近年来,使用社交媒体的年轻人数量急剧增加,因此他们的社交和情感发展的大部分都发生在互联网上)”可知,年轻人的社交和情感发展的大部分都发生在互联网上,是因为近年来,使用社交媒体的年轻人数量急剧增加。故填Because the number of young people using social media has increased dramatically in recent years. 41. 根据第二段“Social media allows young people to achieve online many of the tasks that are important to them offline: staying connected with friends and family, making new friends, and exchanging ideas. Some schools successfully use blogs as teaching tools, which has the benefit of improving skills in written expression and creativity. At the same time, social media helps them get what they want, increase their knowledge and confidence in their academic performance.(社交媒体让年轻人能够在网上完成许多对他们线下来说很重要的任务:与朋友和家人保持联系,结交新朋友,交流想法。一些学校成功地将博客作为教学工具,这有助于提高写作表达能力和创造力的技能。同时,社交媒体帮助他们得到他们想要的东西,增加他们的知识和对学业成绩的信心)”可知,本段提到了社交媒体让年轻人能够在网上完成许多对他们线下来说很重要的任务,同时,社交媒体帮助他们得到他们想要的东西,增加他们的知识和对学业成绩的信心,可推理出第二段主要讲了社交媒体对年轻人的好处。故填It is mainly about the benefits of social media for young people. 42. 根据文章第三段“Research also indicates that there are frequent online expressions of offline behaviours, which have introduced problems such as cyberbullying and online harassment.(研究还表明,网络上经常出现线下行为的表达,这引发了网络欺凌和在线骚扰等问题)”可知,网络欺凌和在线骚扰等问题是由线下行为的网络表达引发的,而不是由年轻人的不当数字足迹引起的,所以陈述中的“Young people’s improper digital footprint(年轻人的不当数字足迹)”表达是错误的,应改为Young people’s frequent online expressions of offline behaviours may have an impact on cyberbullying and online harassment,故填Young people’s improper digital footprint may have an impact on cyberbullying and online harassment. 改为Young people’s frequent online expressions of offline behaviours may have an impact on cyberbullying and online harassment. 43. 根据第二段“Social media allows young people to achieve online many of the tasks that are important to them offline: staying connected with friends and family, making new friends, and exchanging ideas. Some schools successfully use blogs as teaching tools, which has the benefit of improving skills in written expression and creativity. At the same time, social media helps them get what they want, increase their knowledge and confidence in their academic performance.(社交媒体让年轻人能够在网上完成许多对他们线下来说很重要的任务:与朋友和家人保持联系,结交新朋友,交流想法。一些学校成功地将博客作为教学工具,这有助于提高写作表达能力和创造力的技能。同时,社交媒体帮助他们得到他们想要的东西,增加他们的知识和对学业成绩的信心) ”可知,可以充分利用社交媒体关注教育账号,因为它们为我提供有用的学习资源和技巧。此外,还加入在线学习小组,讨论学术话题,与他人分享知识。故填I make full use of social media to follow educational accounts, which provide me with useful learning resources and tips. Also, I join online study groups to discuss academic topics and share knowledge with others. (Green Living Starts From Me)”为主题的环保活动。 Dear Jim, ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】Dear Jim, I’m excited to tell you about our school’s upcoming environmental activity themed “Green Living, Starting with Me”.
