Huang Xuhua was born in Guangdong Province in 1926. When he was young, he saw the hard times of his country under foreign attacks. These sad memories made him study hard. He made a promise to make the country strong with his knowledge.
In the 1950s, when China started to develop nuclear submarines(核潜艇), it was a very difficult job. Huang Xuhua was not afraid and stood up bravely. At that time, there was not much advanced technology or many resources. But he and his team took on this challenge. They used simple tools like abacuses(算盘) and slide rules(滑尺) to calculate and do experiments with great effort. Another important problem was to make sure the submarine was stable underwater. After many tests, they gradually overcame these problems.
Finally, in the 1970s, China's first nuclear submarine was built and tested successfully. This made China one of the few countries that had this ability. David Stringer is a star in the Chinese community in New Zealand's South Island because he plays traditional Chinese musical instrument hulusi so well.
Stringer played a piece of Chinese folk music Deep in the Bamboo Forest using hulusi at the yearly Mid-Autumn Festival Gala Concert. It was a concert organized by the Chinese community in Christchurch which is the second largest city in New Zealand. “Although it is easy to play hulusi at a basic level, Deep in the Bamboo Forest needs lots of skill, which is a Grade 6 exam piece,” said Stringer.
Stringer first saw hulusi ten years ago on his first trip to China in Zhangjiajie in central China's Hunan province. While seeing his curiosity(好奇心)about the musical instrument, his friend gave him one and also taught him to play hulusi. The next year, Stringer went to Yunnan China and bought another two. Now, he has a total of five hulusi of different types.
“From young, I was introduced to the Chinese culture. More recently, I have been learning Chinese and made many friends in the Chinese community. Like New Zealanders, I find them friendly and encouraging.” Stringer said.
“Chinese cultural symbols can be found everywhere in New Zealand, and most locals have also started celebrating traditional Chinese festivals, especially the Chinese New Year, the Lantern Festival and the Mid-Autumn Festival, which are making our own culture richer,” he added.
There is a hulusi club in Christchurch, and Stringer was encouraged to join it and has performed with the members there many times. “I feel lucky to make friends with these Chinese people in the club, learn from and perform with them. Hulusi brings us together,” he said.

Can plants talk? Modern research has found something amazing: they do communicate with each other.
It has been known for some time that plants use chemicals(化学物质) to communicate with each other. This happens when a plant gets attacked(袭击) by insects. The plant gives out chemicals from the leaves that are being eaten. This is like a warning, or a call for help: “I'm being attacked!” When another plant gets the chemicals, it starts to give out its own, different chemicals. Some of these chemicals drive insects away. Others attract the wasps(黄蜂;蜜蜂)! The wasps kill the insects that are eating the plants.
More surprisingly, plants also use sound to communicate. People can't hear these sounds, but plants are making them. Some plants make noises with their roots(根). Corn and chili plants do this. Some trees make clicking noises when there is not enough water.
Most surprisingly of all, plants have a system of communication that can link(联系) nearly every plant in a forest. Scientists call this system the “wood wide web”. The wood wide web is linked underground by fungi(霉菌). It links the roots of different plants to each other. Using the wood wide web, plants can share information and even food with each other. However, it may lead to bad effects. Plants may use it to steal food from each other, or spread chemicals to attack other plants. Perhaps one day scientists will learn how to create a “firewall” to help prevent these attacks within the wood wide web.
Scientists are learning more every day about the secret ways in which plants talk to each other. Maybe one day we will know enough about plant communication to be able to “talk” with them ourselves.
42. How many ways plants use to communicate with each other are mentioned in the passage?
A. Two B. Three C. Four
43. What can't a future “firewall” do according to the writer?
A. prevent plants stealing food from each other.
B. prevent plants spreading chemicals to attack other plants.
C. link nearly every plant in a forest.
44. What is the structure of the passage?
A. B. C.
45. What is the writer's purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To give people hope for further studies.
B. To call on people to protect the plants on Earth.
C. To inspire people to communicate with plants.
