If you seek happiness, then you need to know what happiness is for you. I don’t believe there is one universal definition of happiness. Happiness is a very subjective emotion, according to me. Put two people in identical situation: same amount of money, life experiences, etc. and you can be pretty sure that they both wouldn’t feel equally happy or equally sad. I believe this is so because there are two kinds of happiness. There is one kind of happiness, which is kind of universal and then there is the other kind, which is very individual to each one of us. It is this kind of happiness that I find more interesting.
The second kind of happiness that I talk about comes from our expectations out of our lives, which vary from person to person. For example, a person who expects a lot out of his or her life may find that happiness is hard to find. They are constantly in search of these things in life, which always seem to elude (逃避) them. Those things may be money or fame or power or any of the other pursuits (追求) that humans have, but it would be likely that such people are less likely to be happy, if their goals are not met. In most cases, even after their goals are met, they don’t find happiness, because they seek more—new goals, new wish lists, and it’s a seemingly never-ending process for them!
On the other hand, a person who takes life as it comes along and makes the best of each day is more likely to be happy every day. They have no pressure or goals to occupy their minds and they can achieve happiness from the simple pleasures of everyday life, finding love, making time for the family and kids, seeing their kids grow, etc. Of course, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have any expectations at all. You should keep those expectations reasonable and manageable.
41 Which of the following is the author’s opinion according to Paragraph 1?
A. Happiness has one universal definition.
B. Every individual has his own happiness.
C. There are no people who are really happy.
D Happiness means having money and power.
42. What does the underlined part “these things” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to?
A. Daily demands. B. Life experiences.
C. Ideas about happiness. D. Expectations out of life.
43. Even if their goals are met, some people still don’t feel happy because _________.
A. they gave too much for their goals
B. they don’t know what happiness is
C. they have new goals that need achieving
D. they think sadness is a never-ending process
44. What kind of person is likely to be happy in the author’s opinion?
A. He who has few expectations. B. He who has no pressure or goals.
C. He who has a great ambition or dream. D. He who can find fun from his daily life.
45. The author writes this passage mainly to tell readers _________.
A. the definition of happiness
B. the importance of happiness
C. to enjoy every day to the fullest
D. to give up their dreams and be practical

To grow sugary dates in the sand, Siwa’s farmers must first make the desert suitable for farming. An oasis (绿洲) in Egypt, Siwa has been home to humans for thousands of years. Since ancient times, the oasis has hosted farms producing some of the most valuable dates in Egypt, and sugary dates have appeared on Egyptians, tables.
The desert environment in Siwa is not quite fit for plants to grow. For example, the water there contains much salt. However, with local people’s efforts, the Siwa oasis contains complex agricultural fields, where date trees, crops and other plants grow in harmony. That impressed me a lot during my visit to the oasis. To make a new piece of field, farmers first remove the top soil and replace it with a mixture of sand and waste matter from animals. The first plants are medicinal plants. Then, farmers plant date trees and olive trees. These farming skills are passed down from generation to generation.
To grow date trees is demanding. And it takes 10 years for a new date tree to mature, but once it does, the tree produces generous fruit: around 110 pounds of dates per year. Each farmer picks dates with the skilled hands. They climb the trees using nothing more than a belt. In total, Siwa grows more than 25,000 tons of dates from 280,000 trees per year.
The dates can be eaten fresh, or made dry. Every part of the date tree is significant in Siwa, from leaves made into beds and boxes to wood used to build houses. And then, of course, there’s the fruit itself. The dates can be cooked with goat meat or mixed with eggs for breakfast. They can also be mixed with flour, water, and olive oil, and boiled slowly to make a local dessert.
Local farmers once developed many unique date varieties, which their camels carried to Cairo. But later many of those varieties perished. And today only several major varieties remain and some have become quite rare and been at risk. The 1985 construction of a road in the oasis made the survival of local agricultural tradition even tougher.
46. What can we learn about sugary dates from Paragraph 1?
A. They can adapt to tough environment.
B. They have existed for a long time.
C. They’re introduced to Egypt from abroad.
D. They’re the most valuable fruit in Egypt.
47. What impressed the author a lot during his visit to Siwa?
A. The great variety of plants grown there,
B. The hard but happy life of local people.
C. The great complexity of the local agriculture.
D. The local farmers’ wisdom and contribution to farming.
48. What do the figures mentioned in Paragraph 3 show?
A. It’s worthwhile to make an effort to grow date trees.
B. It’s easy for farmers to pick dates from the trees.
C. It costs a lot to grow date trees in the basis.
D. It’s necessary to develop agriculture in Siwa.
49. What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. People’s preference for dates.
B. The introduction to local food,
C. The usage of date trees’ different parts.
D. The locals’ high expectations of date trees.
50. What does the underlined word “perished” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Died out. B. Spread out.
C. Got created. D. Became known.
D
TikTok is setting a 60-minute daily screen time limit for users who are aged under 18. The video app, which is owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, said it is introducing the feature to encourage teens to manage their screen time. TikTok added that the new limit comes after it brought in a prompt (提示符) last year, which helped increase the use of their screen time tools by 234%.
Hitting the limit, users affected will receive a new passcode on the screen in their app to unlock extra time. Anyone who rejects the new 60-minute restriction and goes on to use the app for 100 minutes a day will receive a warning from TikTok to set their own screen time controls. Parents of children using the Family Pairing option on the app will also be able to set screen time limits, as well as access a dashboard (控制面板) which would give a breakdown of app usage.
Cormac Keenan, head of trust and safety at TikTok, said the company had worked with researchers in developing the new limits. “Since there’s no agreement on the ‘right’ amount of screen time, we consulted the current academic research and experts from the Digital Wellness Lab at Boston Children’s Hospital in choosing this limit,” he said.
Critics of the video app welcomed the screen time limit, but described it as the “tip of the iceberg” when it comes to TikTok’s response to young users’ exposure to the platform. “TikTok has won the race for the hearts and minds of 14 to 24-year-olds in the United States and the United Kingdom,” said Imran Ahmed, chief executive of the Center for Countering Digital Hate. “It is the one that needs to be dealt with most urgently.” Mr Ahmed said his centre’s research at the end of last year found that within minutes of opening a TikTok account, a 13-year-old girl user was receiving eating disorder and self-harm content in her feed. He called on the platform to focus its efforts not just on limiting screen time, but also to “clean up” feeds of harmful content to make it a “safe environment for children”.
51. In the first paragraph, TikTok is introducing the new screen time limit to________.
A. encourage in-person interactions B. increase the use of the platform
C. help teens stay in control of their use D. avoid criticism from concerned parents
52. What will happen when users under 18 reach their screen time limit?
A. Their parents will send them a warning message.
B. They will be locked out of their account for the day.
C. They must enter a passcode to continue using the app.
D. Their parents must access a dashboard to activate the app.
53. How did TikTok develop the new limits?
A. By seeking expert advice. B. By consulting the government.
C. By launching a survey among its users. D. By copying other social media platforms.
54. Which of the following best explains the underlined part in the last paragraph?
A. An insufficient action to keep teens safe on TikTok.
B. An noticeable part of network security problems.
C. An urgent issue waiting for TikTok to deal with.
D. An over reliance on TikTok among teens.
55. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that________.
A. TikTok exposes young users to mental disorder B. TikTok is dangerously addictive to teens
C. TikTok appeals to young users worldwide D. TikTok is popular but not safe enough for teens

The Christmas of my 16th, when decorating the Christmas tree with Mum, I accidentally dropped and broke an old glass ball. It had been on our tree for as long as I could remember.
Regretfully, I knelt to pick up the pieces and was surprised to find a small piece of paper among them. Unfolding the tiny note, I recognized my father’s penciled writing. Lifting my eyes, I saw my mothers smile.
“Your Daddy wrote that and put it in that blue ball during our first Christmas together, just before you were born,” she said.
I wouldn’t have believed it, if there hadn’t been the note in my hands. Daddy always regarded getting the tree decorated as an important task. And yet this bit of yellowed paper proved that long ago my Daddy had done something romantic at Christmas.
Carefully putting the note aside, I cleaned up the pieces, wishing I could reassemble them. “You needn’t fit the parts of the old glass ball together again. Pick out another one and put the note back inside.” Mum said.
Now, as I celebrate the holidays without Mum, who died of cancer years ago, I feel really sad. Each year as I decorate Christmas tree. I recall the moment I shared with her that winter afternoon and blink away my tears.
As I carefully handle those old glass balls. I love knowing that one of them holds a secret between Daddy and Mum — a secret that was obvious to all who knew them.
The note inside one of those old glass balls on Christmas tree holds the heart of my parents’ marriage in three warm words: “I love you.”

41. Which of the following is the author’s opinion according to Paragraph 1?
A. Happiness has one universal definition.
B. Every individual has his own happiness.
C. There are no people who are really happy.
D. Happiness means having money and power.
42. What does the underlined part “these things” in Paragraph 2 probably refer to?
A. Daily demands. B. Life experiences.
C. Ideas about happiness. D. Expectations out of life.
43. Even if their goals are met, some people still don’t feel happy because _________.
A. they gave too much for their goals
B. they don’t know what happiness is
C. they have new goals that need achieving
D. they think sadness is a never-ending process
44. What kind of person is likely to be happy in the author’s opinion?
A. He who has few expectations. B. He who has no pressure or goals.
C. He who has a great ambition or dream. D. He who can find fun from his daily life.
45. The author writes this passage mainly to tell readers _________.
A. the definition of happiness
B. the importance of happiness
C. to enjoy every day to the fullest
D. to give up their dreams and be practical
【答案】41. B 42. D 43. C 44. D 45. C

由第二段中的“In most cases, even after their goals are met, they don’t find happiness, because they seek more—new goals, new wish lists, and it’s a seemingly never-ending process for them! They have no pressure or goals to occupy their minds and they can achieve happiness from the simple pleasures of everyday life, finding love, making time for the family and kids, seeing their kids grow, etc. (另一方面,一个对生活随遇而安并充分利用每一天的人更有可能每天都快乐。他们没有压力或目标来占据他们的思想,他们可以从日常生活的简单乐趣中获得快乐,找到爱,为家人和孩子腾出时间,看着孩子成长等等)”可知,作者认为一个对生活随遇而安并充分利用每一天、能从日常生活中找到乐趣的人更有可能每天幸福。由此推知,作者告诉读者要随遇而安,尽情享受每一天,去感受幸福。故选C项。

【答案】46. B 47. D 48. A 49. C 50. A

A. encourage in-person interactions B. increase the use of the platform

【51题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“TikTok is setting a 60-minute daily screen time limit for users who are aged under 18. The video app, which is owned by Chinese firm ByteDance, said it is introducing the feature to encourage teens to manage their screen time. TikTok added that the new limit comes after it brought in a prompt (提示符) last year, which helped increase the use of their screen time tools by 234%.(TikTok为18岁以下的用户设置了每天60分钟的屏幕时间限制。这款视频应用由中国字节跳动公司所有,该公司表示,推出这一功能是为了鼓励青少年管理他们的屏幕时间。TikTok补充说,新的限制是在去年引入提示符之后出台的,这使得他们的屏幕时间工具的使用率增加了234%)”可知,在第一段中,TikTok引入了新的屏幕时间限制,以帮助青少年控制自己的使用。故选C。
