Paul was attacked by a shark in the Sydney Harbor and found himself in a fight for his life. “I was a doll in a monster’s mouth,” he says. A string of good luck saved him, even though he lost a hand and a leg. Now, the 47-year-old is a motivational speaker and environmentalist.
He was doing a counter terrorism training exercise with his mates when suddenly he felt that big hit on the back of his leg. A shark grabbed him by his right hand and the back of his right leg in the same bite and dragged him underwater. He remembered thinking, “Oh, I am not going home today.” And then the shark bit off his leg bone and took off his hand.
The encounter only lasted about eight seconds, but anyone who’s been through unbearable pain will tell you it feels like forever. Luckily his diving suit made him float to the surface. He started to swim to his safety boat — only to realize his hand wasn't there. He also had no clue whether he could feel his broken leg.
It just so happened that his three teammates had seen what was going on and reached him before the shark did again. They pulled him into the boat, at which point he temporarily passed out.
His surgeon eventually gave him a choice: keep his leg, knowing it would not properly function, or remove it and get a prosthetic (假肢). All of this was difficult to process emotionally. He always says that up until his incident, his two greatest fears were sharks and public speaking, and it took a shark attack and meeting with a bunch of kids who wanted to hear his story at a cancer charity for that all to change. For 30minutes he was fortunate enough to hang out with these children who had grown up in the hospital and help take their minds off of what they were struggling with, if only for a short while. He walked out of the room on top of the world after seeing the effect it had on them. It gave him a purpose. It gave him value. And so he thought, “Okay, maybe I can do this.”
24. What was Paul’s feeling after being attacked by a shark?
A. He felt rather hopeless. B. He felt like a hero.
C. He felt powerful. D. He felt very embarrassed.
25. How did Paul’s teammates help him after the shark attack?
A. They managed to kill the shark.
B. They dragged him into the safety boat.
C. They phoned an ambulance immediately.
D. They rapidly applied a belt to stop the bleeding.
26. What was the turning point for Paul in terms of his fears and outlook on life?
A. Having his leg cut. B. Receiving medical treatment.
C. Reviewing the site of his attack. D. Meeting with kids at a cancer charity.
27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Purpose is a cure of anxiety.
B. One’s potential may be underrated.
C Someone could rise again from the ashes.
D. Everything comes to those who are innovative.
C
One day in the fall of 2023 a young Atlantic yellow-nosed albatross was lying listless in southeastern Brazil’s Santos Basin. Beach monitors found the young bird in the sand, weak and dying. The cause of the albatross’s disaster was evident: it was caught in a weather balloon, which, sadly, is just one instance of a bigger environmental headache.
Globally, hundreds of thousands of weather balloons are launched into the sky every year, and the majority are never recovered. Instead, their waste—a mix of latex, cotton and plastics — remains in marine (海洋的) ecosystems for years. And because only a small percentage of dead animals wash ashore, the impact is likely worse than the numbers suggest. The root of this mounting trouble lies in the very nature of how weather balloons operate. Weather balloons are used to get high-altitude (高空) data like air temperature and pressure. Once a balloon has travelled up about 21 miles and its volume has grown 100-fold, it explodes, shooting pieces in all directions.
Australian researchers at the Tangaroa Blue Foundation first flagged the problem of weather-balloon garbage a decade ago. Over 21 months, they collected 2,460 pieces of weather-balloon litter around the Great Barrier Reef. The researchers estimated that up to 70 percent of Australia’ s weather balloons end up in the ocean. One study notes that while some of the materials used in weather balloons are considered biodegradable, much of it is not breaking down quickly.
Some companies have produced special materials now made from plant-based fiber designed to weaken much faster than previous cotton versions. But the new models are 20 to 30 percent more expensive. Despite the higher cost, weather bureaus (局) have started to reduce the impact by trying out more sustainable balloons and switching from white to blue balloons, which marine animals may be less likely to mistake for food. Some agencies also announced they would be testing drones (无人机) to collect weather data, which are recoverable.
Weather agencies aren’t trialing these new devices only because they’ re more sustainable; they also want better data. For now, though, balloons still fly much higher than drones, so they remain an important data-collecting tool. Lower-impact versions would at least be a small improvement for the ocean’s animals.
28. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A The functions of weather balloons.
B. The problems of using weather balloons.
C. The composition of weather balloon waste.
D. The difficulty of weather balloon recycling.
29. What can we learn about weather balloons?
A Weather balloon waste can hardly break down.
B. New versions of weather balloons are being tried.
C. Weather balloons cause the death of most sea animals.
D. Drones are better in collecting data than weather balloons.
30. What does the author think of the changes mentioned in the passage?
A. Valuable but risky.
B. Exciting and hopeful.
C. Necessary and reliable.
D. Promising but incomplete.
D
You might not think that an AI capable of making music would stimulate your emotion, but others think differently, particularly those who gathered at Mexico City’s Symphony Hall in 2019 for Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, which I finished using melodies generated by an AI.
As the orchestra (管弦乐团) finished Schubert’s original work and began the music the AI and I had written, I could feel the crowd’s energy shift from astonishment to indignation and fear. They seemed afraid that an AI might be able to make emotional symphonic music. You can see their point: an AI that makes emotional music could affect the emotional lives of thousands or even millions of people in a small, but profound way, just like a human musician does.
Positive and negative, people reacted very strongly to AI’s symphonic debut (首秀). Even though most people don’t believe that AI can create something enjoyable, they, at least partly, did enjoy the Unfinished Symphony.
Enjoyment in music implies that there’s something in the music that the listener connects to, a perception of shared emotion. But, in the case of AI music, an emotion shared with who? AI, as of yet, has no emotions. So what is the meaning of music made without an emotional composer? The unsatisfying answer is that music has no objective meaning. A composer can decide how a piece of music sounds, but it’s the listener that decides what it means.
No matter how it’s created, music doesn’t exist in a vacuum (真空) to the listener. The meaning we assign to music depends on its context — how the piece connects to other elements in our lives. Without context, music is like the results of a game whose rules have been lost. The context for a music is part of who you are. The music is emotional to you because you have the context to appreciate it. As it continues to evolve, AI music will develop its own context. Certainly, it’ll be different from human-made music. It’ll mix existing genres to create new ones; it’ll combine instruments that we wouldn’t think of combining. Its rules will be different.
I’m now always asked the same question: “Who put the emotion in that music: you, the composer, or the AI?” But that’s not the question they really want to ask, though. There’s a deeper question that most people are too afraid to ask right now: “Are my emotions so simple that they can be maneuvered by a machine?”
In my experience, this could be possible one day. If a modestly capable music AI in 2019 could stir up emotions of an audience, maybe AI can have a more powerful effect on our emotional lives than we’d like to admit.
31. The audience reacted strongly to the symphony mainly due to ______.
A. their doubts about AI’s capabilities B. their uneasiness about AI’s influence
C the orchestra’s brilliant presentation of AI music D. the likeness between AI music and the original work
32. What might the author agree with?
A. AI poses little impact on people’s emotions.
B. Music bears no intended emotional meaning.
C. AI music will outperform human-made music.
D. The context reflects people’s interpretation of music.
33. What does the word “maneuvered” underlined in Paragraph 6 most probably mean?
A. Refreshed. B. Challenged. C. Revealed. D. Directed.
34. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Are Composers To Be Replaced? B. Would AI Music Be a Rising Trend?
C. Could AI Make Music That Moves You? D. Was the Unfinished Symphony Successful?
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)

Whether it’s the echo (回声) of beeping tills in a supermarket or the hissing of a coffee machine in your local café, the brain is constantly working to decode (解码) hundreds of noises each day.
But for individuals like 25-year-old Sophie, these background noises can be stressful. ___35___ She says she can’t figure out where they’re coming from and can’t compute them fast enough. After a hearing test came back normal, Sophie met a private audiologist (听觉矫正专家) for further testing. She was eventually diagnosed (诊断) with auditory processing disorder (APD). ___36___ However, her audiologist believes the overuse of noise-canceling headphones, which Sophie wears for up to five hours a day, could have a part to play.
Noise-canceling headphones do have advantages for long-term ear health. But some experts warn that by blocking everyday sounds, the brain may “forget” how to filter (过滤) noise. ___37___ Over-reliance on noise-canceling headphones during this period might delay the ability to process speech and noise. Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children have seen an increase in demand for assessments of children struggling to hear certain words in noisy environments. ___38___ Audiologists are calling for more research into the impact of noise-canceling headphones on teen’s auditory processing.
___39___ Mobile apps with “word in noise” training exercises are popular for helping patients distinguish speech from background noise. Additionally, microphones and low-gain hearing aids can assist in specific situations. Choosing headphones that don’t completely block the ears is also suggested.
A. The cause of Sophie’s APD diagnosis is unknown.
B. Treatment for APD can make a significant positive difference.
C. Despite having normal hearing, she often struggles to recognize voices.
D. She would leave bars and restaurants early because of the stressful noise.
E. They note that the high-level listening skills don’t fully develop until late teens.
F. One survey showed 61% of 18-24 year olds prefer to watch TV with subtitles on.
G. Hearing a diversity of sounds helps the brain decide what is important to focus on.
第三部分:书面表达(共两节,32分)
第一节 (共4小题; 第40、41题各2分, 第42题3分, 第43题5分, 共12分)
In 1983, Howard Gardner, a professor at Harvard, published Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences. In the book, he presented one type of intelligence that everyone must develop if they want to be successful. That is emotional intelligence.
Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to identify and regulate your own emotions. It means having a deep understanding of yourself, knowing your own strengths and weaknesses, and handling reactions and emotions wisely. Emotional intelligence is critical for success in almost any field and it is especially important for high-stress environments, for example, when times are tough and when a person wants to quit or is fearful.
We all know highly emotional people. Rather than react wisely, they tend to let their emotions run their lives, often saying or doing something they may later regret. I’ve seen many people do this on social media, getting in arguments with loved ones over trivial stuff because they have different opinions. This inability to master the self leads to many struggles and heartaches for people.
Emotional intelligence does not mean being void (没有) of emotions. It means you know it is okay to be angry, just not out-of-control angry. You know it’s okay to feel hurt, but it is not okay to do something stupid in the name of revenge (报复). Many of us know people who are very intelligent, but allow their emotions to damage their lives.
Now, reflect on how you manage your emotions. Are you smart in the way you express what you’re feeling, especially when the pressure is on?
40. According to the passage, what is “emotional intelligence”?
41. How do highly emotional people deal with their emotions?
42. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
It’s important to keep your emotions under control, so when you get hurt, you should neither get angry nor do stupid things for revenge.
43. In your daily life, what can you do to better manage your emotions?

In my early years at school, I had trouble with some subjects. Sometimes I would get an “F” and that would make me really scared. What I used to do was to turn the “F” into a “B” ____11____(please) my parents. However, it didn’t work out and finally I ____12____ (catch) doing that. Then I knew I had to accept that failure and learn ____13____ it, so I took a positive approach. Naturally that “F” turned into a “B” and that “B” turned into an “A”.
【答案】11. to please
12. was caught
13. from
故填to please。
故填was caught。
【13题详解】
考查介词。句意:然后我知道我必须接受失败并从中学习,所以我采取了一种积极的方法。根据句意可知,此处表示“从失败中学习”,learn from为固定短语,意为“从……中学习”。故填from。

C Reviewing the site of his attack. D. Meeting with kids at a cancer charity.
27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Purpose is a cure of anxiety.
B. One’s potential may be underrated.
C. Someone could rise again from the ashes.
D. Everything comes to those who are innovative.

C
One day in the fall of 2023, a young Atlantic yellow-nosed albatross was lying listless in southeastern Brazil’s Santos Basin.
A. The functions of weather balloons.
B. The problems of using weather balloons.
C. The composition of weather balloon waste.
D. The difficulty of weather balloon recycling.
29. What can we learn about weather balloons?
A. Weather balloon waste can hardly break down.
B. New versions of weather balloons are being tried.
C. Weather balloons cause the death of most sea animals.
D. Drones are better in collecting data than weather balloons.
30. What does the author think of the changes mentioned in the passage?
A. Valuable but risky.
B. Exciting and hopeful.
C. Necessary and reliable.
D. Promising but incomplete.
【答案】28. B 29. B 30.

C. the orchestra’s brilliant presentation of AI music D. the likeness between AI music and the original work
【答案】31. B 32. B 33. D 34. C

【导语】这是一篇议论文。文章主要讨论了人工智能是否能创作出富含情感的音乐的问题,论述了作者对于音乐中情感的看法。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“As the orchestra (管弦乐团) finished Schubert’s original work and began the music the AI and I had written, I could feel the crowd’s energy shift from astonishment to indignation and fear. They seemed afraid that an AI might be able to make emotional symphonic music.

【答案】40. Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to identify and regulate your own emotions.
41. Rather than react wisely, highly emotional people tend to let their emotions run their lives, often saying or doing something they may later regret.
42. It’s important to keep your emotions under control, so when you get hurt, you should neither get angry nor do stupid things for revenge.
According to the passage, it’s okay for you to feel angry, just not out-of-control angry.
43. I manage my emotions in two ways. Firstly, I like writing down my bad feelings, which enables me to let go of them so that I can focus more on what makes me cheerful. Secondly, when conflict occurs, it helps to talk openly about my feelings and thoughts.
I improve my emotional control from two aspects. When in conflict with others, I address it with a shoe-shifting view, which helps me better understand them and avoid highly emotional response. As for my negative feelings, I prefer to let them out in a healthy way, such as running or singing, which benefits me emotionally.
