McCutcheon first became famous for her role as “Tiff” on EastEnders in the late nineties and then as a charming housekeeper in Love Actually. Her acting career seemed promising, but it was soon hindered by a mysterious illness. More than two decades ago, she was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome(CFS), which made her hospitalized and wheelchair - bound at times. Later, she was also diagnosed with Lyme disease and fibromyalgia, both causing widespread pain. During the seven - year - long “hell” of suffering from these illnesses, McCutcheon experienced severe depression as the symptoms took over her life. However, in recent years, things have improved. She is now constantly learning more about CFS. “There are so many different symptoms that can be mistaken for other things,” she said. Illness has taught McCutcheon to be more appreciative of life. “When you have an invisible illness, you learn to smell the flowers a lot more,” she said. It has also made her listen to her body and focus on what truly matters. She has a more helpful perspective on reality, realizing that people’s seemingly fast - paced and successful lives may not be as real as they seem. And she encourages people to hold on to hope and understand their bodies better. 4. What do we know about Martine McCutcheon’s career? A. She started her career in Love Actually. B. C Cristina Mittermeier, a pioneering (开创性的) photographer, cares about nature and wants to protect it. Her lens (镜头) inspires action and offers hope. Mittermeier’s love for nature began early. This love led her to study marine (海洋的) biology, a field she focused on with the dream of studying whales at first. But soon she saw the damaging effects of industrial fishing, which caused a change in her career (职业). “What I wanted to do was try my best to call on the whole world to understand how easily the oceans can be destroyed.” she explained. Science, while necessary, felt not enough to influence a larger population. Photography became her chosen tool. She has invented her work a form of “visual medicine”, balancing the seriousness of environmental problems with a call to action. Her ideas for helping nature are practical and include listening to what local people know and how they live with the environment. Mittermeier’s latest book Hope shows her efforts in environmental protection. By working with people from all over the world to create the book, she turned it into a group effort instead of just her own. The book’s 130 photographs, covering twenty years, are displayed (展示) not by geography or species, but by themes that tell the story of life on our planet. Through her work, Mittermeier continually attaches importance to the role of youth in reshaping the planet’s future, Visual storytelling, she argues, is likely to encourage young people to take action quickly — not through fear but by directing attention to finding means of solving problems and celebrating victories (胜利), however small. Cristina Mittermeier’s life shows the great power of art with a purpose. Her lens catches not just what is but what could be, urging us all to act toward a future where people and nature can live peacefully. 8 What caused a change in Mittermeier’s career? A. Her interest in nature. B. Her love for photography. C The power of science. D. The alarming scene of industrial fishing. 9. Which of the following can best describe Mittermeier? A. Creative and inspiring B. Curious and independent. C. Hardworking and calm. D. Energetic and humorous. 10. What can we learn about Hope? A. It focuses on present-day photos. B. It talks about the same species. C. It is created through shared efforts. D. It is a story book for children. 11. What is the best title for the text? A. Cristina Mittermeier: Photography Inspires Action B. Cristina Mittermeier: Dreams Come True C. Environmental Protection: Ocean Has Artistic Beauty D. Environmental Protection: Measures Come First D Does adversity (逆境) warm hearts or harden them? Recently, my graduate student Daniel and I set out to explore the relationship between adversity and compassion (同情). We conducted a study online and reached more than 200 people from all walks of life. After asking them about the hardships they faced and how often they experienced compassion, we offered them the chance to donate some of the money they were about to be paid for taking part in the study to help people in need. The result showed that those who had faced serious adversities in life feel more compassion for suffering people. And as a result, they donated more money. Now, if experiencing any type of hardship can make a person more compassionate, you might assume that the compassion would be reached when someone has experienced the exact misfortune that another person is facing. Interestingly, this turns out to be dead wrong. In an article recently published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, the Kellogg School of Management professor Loran Nordgren and his team found that the human mind refuses to work as usual when it comes to remembering its own past hardships: it regularly makes them appear to be less painful than they actually were. Therefore, recalling a bad experience in your own past may make you underestimate (低估) the difficulty of others’ challenges. You overcame it, you think so should he. The result? You lack compassion. Our findings, taken together with those of Professor Nordgren and his team, are that living through hardships doesn’t either warm hearts or harden them; it does both. Knowing suffering in life usually enhances the compassion we feel for others, except when the suffering involves specific painful events that we know all too well. 12. Which of the following is TRUE about the author’s study? A. Those attending it had to pay for it. B. It tries to reveal the relationship between adversity and compassion. C. It is meant to encourage people to help those in need. D. Those attending it were asked questions only. 13. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. The assumption that shared misfortune may lead to compassion. B. People’s understanding of others’ misfortune. C. The findings of Loran Nordgren and his team. D. People’s compassion for suffering people. 14. What did Professor Nordgren and his team find? A. Hardships make people lost in sad memories. B. People suffering from adversity are easy to break down. C. People tend to remember their hardships easily. D. Hardships lead to people’s lack of compassion. 15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? A. The Hidden Power of Compassion B. Compassion: A Gift from Personal Adversity C. Surprising link of Adversity and Compassion D. Their mail carrier, Seana Green, makes it a point to go out of her way and chat with folks whenever possible. Although she's had this job for 15 years, she didn't start the route where Marilyn Schmidt lives until about four or five years ago. Marilyn, who recently turned 90-year-old, is just one of the many people that Seana has befriended over the years. The two of them love to chat just about every other day. This is made easier by the fact that Seana will park her vehicle, get out, and deliver mail on foot. Seana walks through the neighborhood, and she does more than just deliver the mail. “I think of them as family,” Seana said. “A lot of them. I really do.” There is an appreciation between the mail lady and residents. That's why, when she hadn't seen Marilyn in quite some time, she grew concerned. “I didn't see her on Thursday, and I didn't see her on Friday,” Seana recalled. “And when I showed up on Saturday and she wasn't on the porch (门廊) and the mail was like, just hanging out of her box. and I shouted through the screen door.” At first, Seana couldn't hear anything coming from inside the home. Soon enough though. The quiet sound of Marilyn calling out for help became clear. Seana said that her voice sounded weak almost “like a kitten meowing (喵喵叫)”. Seana was so frightened that she rushed into the room. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Two weeks later, Marilyn was able to celebrate her 90th birthday at the hospital. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 高一英语试题 (试卷满分150分,考试时间120分钟) 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? 8. What caused a change in Mittermeier’s career? A. Her interest in nature. B. Her love for photography. C. The power of science. D. The alarming scene of industrial fishing. 9. Which of the following can best describe Mittermeier? A. It talks about the same species. C. It is created through shared efforts. D. It is a story book for children. 11. What is the best title for the text? A Cristina Mittermeier: Photography Inspires Action B. Cristina Mittermeier: Dreams Come True C. Environmental Protection: Ocean Has Artistic Beauty D. Environmental Protection: Measures Come First 【答案】8. D 9. A 10. C 11. 根据文章第二段中的“But soon she saw the damaging effects of industrial fishing, which caused a change in her career.(但很快她就看到了工业化捕鱼的破坏性影响,这导致了她职业生涯的改变)”可知,是工业捕鱼的破坏性影响导致了Mittermeier职业的改变。 以及第三段中“She has invented her work a form of “visual medicine”, balancing the seriousness of environmental problems with a callto action. Her ideas for helping nature are practical and include listening to what local people know and how they live with the environment.(她发明了一种“视觉医学”形式的作品,在环境问题的严重性与呼吁行动之间取得平衡。她帮助自然的想法是实用的,包括倾听当地人的知识以及他们如何与环境共存。)”可知,此处描述了她发明了一种“视觉医学”的工作形式,通过这种形式的作品在环境问题的严重性与呼吁行动之间取得平衡,由此体现了她的创造性。因此,选项A“Creative and inspiring(有创造力和鼓舞人心的)”最能描述Mittermeier。故选A。 根据文章第四段中的“By working with people from all over the world to create the book, she turned it into a group effort instead of just her own. 故选A。 D Does adversity (逆境) warm hearts or harden them? Adversity: A Pathway to Deeper Compassion 【答案】12. B 13. A 14. D 15. 根据第一段第二句“Recently, my graduate student Daniel and I set out to explore the relationship between adversity and compassion (同情). (最近,我的研究生丹尼尔和我开始探索逆境和同情之间的关系)”可知,作者的研究试图揭示逆境与同情之间的关系。故选B项。 【13题详解】 词义猜测题。根据第三段“Now, if experiencing any type of hardship can make a person more compassionate, you might assume that the compassion would be reached when someone has experienced the exact misfortune that another person is facing. Interestingly, this turns out to be dead wrong. 故选A项。 根据第四段后四句“Therefore, recalling a bad experience in your own past may make you underestimate (低估) the difficulty of others’ challenges. You overcame it, you think; so should he. The result? You lack compassion. (因此,回忆自己过去的糟糕经历可能会让你低估他人所面临挑战的难度。你认为自己克服了困难,他也应该能做到。结果呢?你缺乏同情心)”可知,Loran Nordgren教授和他的团队发现,经历过逆境的人回忆自己过去的糟糕经历时,可能会低估他人所面临的挑战的难度,从而缺乏同情心,即苦难会导致人们缺乏同情心。故选D项。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。纵览全文可知,文章第一段提出问题“Does adversity (逆境) warm hearts or harden them? If you’re always trapped in emotion management, you can try to take charge of your emotions with science-backed tricks. ____16____ For example, simple actions like standing tall or scheduling worry time train your mind to stay balanced daily. ·Try the 10-second action rule. Sure enough, this sweet lady was lying in the kitchen on the floor. It turned out that she had fallen down and had been lying there for days. Seana was shocked and heart-broken. She called 911 immediately, and Marilyn was quickly taken to hospital. After urgent medical treatment, Marilyn was saved. The doctor said that she was found and rescued just in time. Had it been a little later, the old woman would have died. Two weeks later, Marilyn was able to celebrate her 90th birthday at the hospital. A chocolate ice cream cake and large, colorful birthday balloons were around her. Naturally, friends like Seana were there to join in on the celebration. People stood around 90-year-old Marilyn who was smiling in a hospital bed, celebrating her birthday. Marilyn said, “I am excited that Seana could be there to celebrate my birthday. She saved my life and we got to know each other better.” The scene moved her to tears. 摔倒:fall down/fallen over/have a fall ②.参加:join in /take part in ③.
