Godfrey, a wealthy man of Raveloe, was guilty (内疚的) for giving up his daughter Eppie. Years later, he decided to take her back, believing it was his duty to provide her with a comfortable life. Silas, the lonely weaver (织工) who raised Eppie as his own, was heartbroken at the thought of losing her. Eppie’s cheeks turned red but her voice was calm. “Thank you, sir. But I can’t leave my father.” She held Silas’s hand tightly. Godfrey insisted, “Eppie, you are my own child!” Silas, looking pale with anger, cried, “Why admit this now? Sixteen years ago, you left her when she was just able to walk! God gave her to me!”
Godfrey pleaded (哀求), “She’ll visit you often. We’ll all be family.” “Let the child choose.” Silas said. Eppie shook her head. “If I left, Father would be alone. I’ll stay with him, even if we’re poor.” Silas, though unwilling, said to her, “Think carefully, child. Whatever decision you make, I will always support you!” Eppie’s eyes filled with tears. “I’ll never regret choosing love over riches.”
Defeated, Godfrey left. Silas and Eppie returned to their humble home, where warmth and loyalty connect them tighter than wealth ever could.

Playing the piano can be a challenging task, especially when your fingers can’t move fast enough. However, researchers created a special robotic (机器人的) hand that helps piano players improve their speed and skills.
This robotic hand is worn over the fingers and moves them faster than a person can on their own. Piano players who used it found that they could play difficult parts more easily. The idea came from a scientist, Shinichi Furuya, who wants to help musicians practice more efficiently (高效).
In order to test this robotic hand, 60 professional pianists practiced a difficult finger pattern. Some used the robotic hand to move their fingers quickly, while others practiced without it. As a result, those who used the robotic hand improved their speed by about 6%. Surprisingly, even the hand that didn’t use it got faster! So scientists believe the robotic hand helps improve the connection between the brain and the hands. This might explain why both hands improve, even though only one uses the robotic hand.
The robotic hands aren’t just for piano players. They are also used in medical care and sports. In the future, more complex (复杂) robotic hands will be used for other activities, like medical operations (手术).
In a word, the robotic hand is a promising tool. Although it’s still in the development stage, it offers exciting possibilities for improving skills in different fields.

A.Improve their speed and skills. B.Make their fingers stronger.

A.A Future Field: Medical Care B.A Difficult Pattern: Finger Practice
C.A Challenging Task: Playing the Piano D.A Helpful Invention: The Robotic Hand

八、综合填空(本大题共10小题, 每小题1分, 共10分)
Can you imagine a world without money, Or a world without even the idea of money? Well, thousands of years ago, money was not used at all. I 76 , humans had the “barer” (物物文换) system, his meant if people wanted something they weren’t able to make or produce t 77 they had to find someone who could produce it. Then they had to g 78 that person something in exchange. It wasn’t only goods that were bartered, it was s 79 too: making wheels, repairing leather, keeping cows.
Later, certain things came to be used as money because everyone would take these things in exchange. They were always n 80 . For example, cows, grains, salt and beads were all used as money at some time. It is difficult for us to imagine buying a horse, for example, with bags of salt but that is e 81 what happened. Salt, in fact, was so v 82 that some soldiers were paid in it. it is said that the word “salary” came from this practice. Finally, all these kinds of money were replaced (取代) by pieces of metal, especially gold and silver. Later on, people made coins, which had a consistent (一致的) purity and weight, and represented certain amounts of various objects. So a certain number of coins represented a cow, or 50 pounds of rice, and so on.
Today, of course, we have notes and coins issued (发行) by the government, and everyone a 83 this as money. Money makes it possible to trade in our modem world. You might sometimes find a friend who you can do a direct trade with — perhaps one skateboard or game for another. But mostly this is impossible. Money also allows us to save. It would be difficult to save up lots of cows until you wanted to spend them. W 84 would you put them while you saved. Money is also a measure (衡量) of value. If you have ever done jobs around the house to earn money to buy something like a bicycle, you will have learnt the value of what you were s 85 for by how much work you had to do.
Money plays an important role in our lives. So get your money’s worth.
