Born with a skin illness, Michaela was called a “monster” at her Sierra Leone orphanage (孤儿院), the last to be fed and the first to be beaten. When a copy of Dance Magazine blew into the orphanage yard, with a woman smiling on the cover, she imagined a better life as a dancer.
At the age of 4, she was taken by an American family and she studied and practiced to make her dream real. When she was just 15, she was one of six famous dancers in a play. She went on to study in the American Dancing Theater. At the highest point of her dancing life, she became a leading dancer in many shows.
She was born in the West African country of Sierra Leone. When she was 3, her father was killed in a mine and her mother died of hunger. At the orphanage, she learned to turn around quickly and keep balance for a long time. A couple brought her back to America and promised to take her to dancing lessons once she did well in English. She was quickly discovered to be gifted in dancing.
She had to take a break in 2017 after an accident and this could give her time to treat years of nightmares (噩梦) about her terrible childhood. “Dance with your heart,” she once told young dancers. “Don’t let the bad sides of life cause you to lose what made you want to achieve in the first place.”
19.Why is a magazine mentioned in Paragraph 1?

A.Once she returned to her home.
B.After she learned English well.
C.Once she attended English lessons.
D.After she started to dance well.
22.Which of the following best describes Michaela?
A.Wealthy. B.Gifted. C.Curious. D.Patierit.

Have you ever paid for educational videos? Most of you will say yes. “Pay-for-knowledge” products have been more and more popular these years. They are from language learning to gardening. Now, everything can be found online, so “pay-for-knowledge” industry is on the rise.
Why is it developing so quickly? First, its development is based on the Internet. With a smartphone, anyone who has passed the identity (身份) check can be an online teacher, and anyone who has enough money can buy “pay-for-knowledge” products. Second, people are afraid to miss any information. The need to learn new skills in today’s job market also pushes people to learn from such educational videos.
The “pay-for-knowledge” products can help sellers make money, turning information into money. Besides, buyers can enjoy self-growth from them. What’s more, the industry of “pay-for-knowledge” shows people’s respect for knowledge.
However, the fast development of “pay-for-knowledge” has brought a few problems. For one, a number of people buy them just for showing off. They don’t really make the best use of the products. For another, the market is full of eye catching words such as “5 Classes to Be a Master of Appreciating (欣赏) Classical Music”, which sound like if you pay for it, you are sure to succeed. What’s more, since there are so many teachers and different courses that can help you to learn new skills, people have no idea how to choose the best one.
In general, the best choice is the one that suits you best. “Pay-for-knowledge” may be used as a good start for self-growth, but you have to choose them wisely!
23.What does Paragraph 1 mainly talk about?
A.The rise of “pay-for-knowledge” industry.
B.The problems of “pay-for-knowledge” industry.
C.The importance of “pay-for-knowledge” industry.
24.What are the reasons for the quick development of “pay-for-knowledge” industry?
①The wide use of the Internet.
②The need to learn more skills.
③The high cost of online education.
A.①② B.①③ C.②③
25.Which of the following can best describe “pay-for-knowledge”?
A.It is just good for the sellers.
B.It is used for catching people’s attention.
C.It has both benefits (益处) and problems.
26.What will the writer probably talk about in the next paragraph?
A.How to sell “pay-for-knowledge” products.
B.How to choose “pay-for-knowledge” products.
C.How to develop “pay-for-knowledge” products.
D
A cafe in Toronto refuses to offer Wi-Fi to its customers. Its owner, Jimson Biensenstock, explains his purpose is to get customers to talk with one another instead of always using their phones.
This is a great idea. Maybe Mr. Biensenstock knows what medical studies have shown: Social connection is very important for good health and a long life.
In a study begun in 1965, the researchers found that people who were disconnected from others were about three times more likely to die than people with strong social ties. Surprisingly, they found that people with close social ties and unhealthful lifestyles actually lived longer than those with few friends but more healthful living habits.
Another study in 1988 showed that people without social ties often have more stress. These, in turn, can weaken the health of nearly every bodily system, including the brain. Without social connections, blood flowing to important organs (器官) may weaken and immune function (免疫功能) may be harmed.
In a 2010 report, researchers reported similar findings. They also pointed out that social connections can boost good health by influencing people’s habits. For example, if your friends don’t smoke, you’re less likely to smoke.
Poor social connection also does harm to mental health. The support from loved ones provided by social connection can help develop a sense of meaning and purpose in life. Emma Speals of the Stanford Center wrote, “People who feel more connected to others have lower levels of unhappiness.” “In other words,” Dr. Seppala explained,“staying connected with others keeps you happy, healthy, and strong. And this good feeling makes you want to connect even more.”
Thus, for those looking for a health-improving lifestyle, it’s not enough to focus on eating your vegetables and getting regular exercise. Don’t forget to connect.
27.Why does the cafe in Toronto refuse to offer Wi-Fi?
A.To save money.
B.To make the cafe a quiet place.
C.To get customers to talk to each other.
28.What is the finding of the first two studies?
A.Strong social connections help one live longer.
B.Poor social connections can build up the bodily system.
C.People with strong social connections often have more stress.
29.Which of the following best explains the underlined word “boost” in paragraph 5?
A.Harm. B.Improve. C.Change.
30.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The secret to running a café without Wi-Fi.
B.The importance of social connections for health.
C.The connection between regular exercise and health.

Using Science to Solve Everyday Problems
Science is not just about experiments in a lab; it can also be used to solve real-world problems and make life better. Here’s an interview with two young scientists, Mia and Jack, who recently joined in a science fair.
◆ Can you introduce your project?
Mia: I created a smart watering system for plants. It uses sensors (感测器) to see if the soil is dry and waters the plants by itself when needed. 31
Jack: I designed a tool that turns plastic waste into small building blocks. These blocks can be used to make furniture or even small houses, reducing plastic pollution.
◆ 32
Mia: Many people often forget to water their plants, especially during busy days. I wanted to find a way to help plants live without needing care all the time.
Jack: I saw how much plastic waste is harming the environment, and I wanted to find a way to reuse it instead of throwing it away.
◆ What was your favorite part of the project?
Mia: Programming the sensors was my favorite part. It was challenging but fun to see how technology can solve real-life problems.
Jack: 33 I wanted to find out which ones were best for making the blocks.
◆ Any advice for science project beginners?
Mia: Start with a problem you care about. If you love something, it’s easier to keep going.
Jack: 34 Every mistake teaches you something new and helps you improve.
A.Don’t be afraid to fail.
B.What inspired your project?
C. Always follow the rules strictly.

Well, I’d like to share something with you. First, keep asking questions. As a student, never feel ashamed to ask and learn from your teachers. Here I must say thanks to my patient and experienced teachers. They helped me a lot. Second, keep making mistakes. Yes, mistakes. Many of us are afraid of making mistakes.

B.To prove Michaela’s unfair treatment.
C.To report Michaela’s development.

②The need to learn more skills.
③The high cost of online education.

【答案】27.C 28.A 29.B 30.B
【导语】本文主要讲述了社交联系对健康和长寿至关重要,包括降低死亡率、减少压力、改善免疫功能和心理健康等,呼吁人们重视社交联系。
27.细节理解题。根据“Its owner, Jimson Biensenstock, explains his purpose is to get customers to talk with one another instead of always using their phones.”可知,咖啡馆拒绝提供“Wi-Fi”是为了让顾客彼此交流。故选C。
28.推理判断题。根据“researchers found that people who were disconnected from others were about three times more likely to die than people with strong social ties”和“people without social ties often have more stress...can weaken the health of nearly every bodily system”可知,前两项研究发现社交联系紧密的人更易长寿。故选A。
29.词句猜测题。根据“For example, if your friends don’t smoke, you’re less likely to smoke.”

A.How to sell “pay-for-knowledge” products.

A.Harm. B.Improve. C.Change.
30.What is the main idea of the passage?

D.I enjoyed trying different kinds of plastic.
E. This helps save water and keeps plants healthy.
5. Which invention do you think is more useful, Mia’s or Jack’s? Why? (不超过15词)
