“Why did she spill the beans?” I couldn’t believe it was true. I would never forget the day, on which I was being looked at strangely. The thought would always stay with me. And I couldn’t believe I would lose the friendship of the person I trusted most.
Five years back, Sally was the new kid in class. I don’t know what it was, but something special about her drew me to her. She was the most friendly person I had known. We started as classmates, we were like best friends. So, I never expected her to hurt me in such a big way.
I don’t know what made me tell Sally about my personal life. However, she made the matter bigger than it was, adding her own spin (倾向性描述) (刺) me in the back. After she gave away my secrets, everyone at school started laughing at me. Wherever I went, whispering behind. Because of this terrible situation, I chose to change another school. Sally called me many times.
I tried hard to repair the scars she left on my heart. I started a new life. Five years later, my life went back to the way it had been, with new friends, I met Anna at the market. She had been my classmate since 3rd grade. She told me that Sally wasn’t the one who brought my secrets to light. Mary was. Mary was our school’s big mouth who always wanted to stick her nose into other people’s business.

When the doctor arrived later that morning, he was very surprised. Colin was sitting on the sofa looking at one of his books. He was talking to Mary.
“So, you were ill last night, Colin,” he said.
“I’m better now—much better,” Colin answered in his young voice. “I’m going out in my wheelchair soon if it is fine. I want some fresh air.”
The doctor left without saying anything else. That night Colin slept well. He dreamt about the garden again, and Dickon and its animals.
Early the next morning, Mary ran into his room, “Dickon is here with the fox cub and the crow and two squirrels and a new-born lamb!” she cried.
“Listen! Did you hear that caw-caw sound!”
Just then Martha opened the door. “Dickon and his animals are here, sir,” she said, Colin looked very excited.
Dickon came in. The new-born lamb was in his arms and the little red fox walked next to him. Soot sat on his left shoulder and a squirrel sat on the other. Another squirrel was looking out of his coat pocket. Colin stared as Dickon gave him the new-born lamb.
“What is it doing?” cried Colin. “What does it want?”
“It wants its mother,” said Dickon, smiling.
He took a baby’s bottle from his pocket. He pushed the bottle into the lamb’s mouth. The lamb drank the milk, then it fell asleep.
Colin and Mary asked Dickon questions about the names of flowers. He knew exactly which ones were already growing in the secret garden.
“I’m going to see them,” cried Colin. “I can’t believe it!”
The next day, Dickon pushed Colin’s wheelchair slowly and carefully. Mary walked next to it. They went across the lawn to the long path near the wall. Then Dickon stopped pushing the chair.
“And look!” Mary moved the ivy branch. “Here is the door. Dickon pushes him in—push him in quickly!” When they were inside the garden, Colin looked round and round. He saw the walls and the earth and the trees with their new green leaves. In the grass under the trees there were flowers—gold and purple and white. The trees were covered in pink and white flowers. The sun was warm on his face. Mary and Dickon stared at him. He looked different. His face was pink, not white. “Mary! Dickon! On 20th June 1702, I set off for Surat, on a ship called the Adventure. And indeed “adventure” was really an appropriate name for that ship, and for everything that happened on that journey.
The first part of our trip went well. But when we sailed through the Indian Ocean, there were some terrible storms. The winds were so strong that they sent our ship completely off course. We didn’t know where we were.
At last, when the storms stopped, we saw an island. We had no more drinking water, so the captain sent me to find some fresh water on the island. I set off with some other men in a small boat. And when we got there, I travelled around the island by myself while the men looked for water.
That was a big mistake. When I went back, there were no men and no boat! Then I saw them rowing desperately back to our ship with an enormous giant following them in the sea! They were very frightened.
I ran as fast as I could in the opposition direction. I then climbed up a big hill and when I looked around, I saw fields and fields of very long grass. Then I saw other giants working in the fields.
“On my last trip, I was a giant on an island of tiny people and now I am a tiny person on an island of giants!” It was not a nice feeling.
I was sad and hid behind an enormous tree. I had to think of a plan, but at that time one of the giants saw me.

When the four questions — Who am I? Where did I come from? Why am I here? and Where am I going? — came into my head, I was standing on a small soccer field last week. It was my first time playing the game, but I knew nothing about it. I am not a soccer fan, and every time I watch a match, I fall asleep within 10 minutes, without exception.
Before I went to The Other Green’s salon — a women-themed bookstore in Beijing — last month, playing soccer never would have appeared on my to-do list. I usually do yoga and swim, which are good exercises for women in my eyes, while soccer is for men.
Things started to change when I went into the bookstore and met five members from a female soccer club. They look great, with sunny smiles and athletic bodies. And their confidence impressed me when they talked about how soccer has changed their lives.
It was not easy for women to find a training club to play soccer years ago in Beijing. However, things are getting much better now. I got an invitation from a friend, saying that a club is offering women’s soccer training courses. And that was certainly a yes for me. Being a working mother for seven years, my life has been limited to the office and home, and when I heard about the benefits that it brings, I hoped soccer could make a difference in my life.
This is where the story starts. After an hour of warm-up exercises, here came the match time. Without understanding the basic rules of the game, there I was, trying to shoot twice, missed both times and I hurt my right leg. I still feel the pain. But I also feel that, for me, happiness is real on the field. Soccer is more than just a game for men.

B.Where was “my” first soccer match held?

“Mary! Dickon! At the beginning of the school year, each student would be given a special job for which they would be responsible (负责的) for the whole term. Rita, a quiet and hardworking girl, hoped for an exciting task, like taking care of the class plants. Instead, she received a small box with sand and a small ant.
Even though the teacher insisted (坚称) that this task was very special, Rita could not help feeling disappointed. However, she decided to do her best with her new responsibility. Rita felt proud to share her knowledge and see her classmates so interested. She even made a report and shared her findings with the whole school during the science festival.
At the end of the year, the school recognized Rita’s class as the best of the year. They praised Rita for her hard work and how she turned a small responsibility into something big.

1.The four questions in Paragraph 1 aim to ________.
A.make us interested in soccer B.show “I” knew nothing about soccer at first.
C.make us think further about women soccer D.discuss what soccer is for women
2.________ changed “my” ideas about playing soccer.
A.Soccer matches on the TV B.Books in the women-themed bookstore
C.The invitation from a friend D.The five women from a soccer club
3.Which question is answered in the passage?
A.Where did “I” come from?
B.Where was “my” first soccer match held?
C.How much did I know about soccer rules when I first played?
D.How did soccer change lives of the women I met in the bookstore?
4.What can we infer from the passage?
A.“I” tried to watch soccer games carefully to learn about it.
B.Though “I” got hurt, “I” played very well in my first soccer game.
C.“I” expect to become healthier and more confident by playing soccer.
D.The invitation “I” got was from the first women soccer club in Beijing.
