While walking with her father outside a grocery(杂货) store, Hana
Fatima noticed an old lady trying hard to carry the things she bought to
her car. She and her father offered to help. Then, Hana had an idea—she
decided to help her elderly neighbors.
Hana and her dad shared their phone number with some elderly
neighbors. If they needed anything, they could just call her and her dad.
They would buy the things for them and take them to their homes. This
way, they wouldn't have to go to the store and risk getting hurt.
8
They shared the idea with a few friends, and Hana's father shared
this idea on Facebook. Word spread, and within hours there were
hundreds of people volunteering to do the same thing in their community.
More than a year later, they formed a group called the Good
Neighbor Project. Now, there are about 6,000 volunteers in Toronto,
London, and Ottawa. They speak over 30 languages. They help people
who need help get groceries, medicine, and other important things. The
person making the request pays only for the things they buy—delivery
(送货) is free.
Since they started the project, the group has made more than 9,000
deliveries to people who are vulnerable(脆弱的), like old people, disabled
people and others with special needs.
“When I saw the old lady, I thought that was my chance to go and

Headphones are helpful. And we use them to listen to music without
influencing others. But headphones can be harmful, too. They can cause
hearing loss if the volume( 音量) is too loud. Studies show that one
out of every 10 kids in the United States has some hearing loss. The
cause is loud noise.
13
How Hearing Works
An ear has many working parts. Their job is to turn sound into
something your brain can understand.“We call them hair cells,” Jackie
Clark says. “They look like hairs standing up.” Clark is a professor at
the University of Texas. She studies how loud noises affect our ears.
Sound moves and makes the hair cells move back and forth. Loud
noises can damage these cells by getting them not straight anymore. Once
the cells are damaged, they don't grow back.
14
One sign of hearing loss is tinnitus( 耳鸣). It's a ringing in the
ears. “It's like someone has been playing the violin for a long time,”
Clark says. “It's difficult to get away from it.” And the damage affects
more than your ears. It can cause worries and stress.
Protect Your Ears
How can you protect your ears? Keep the volume on your
headphones low. You should be able to hear sounds around you. And
other people shouldn't hear noise from your headphones.
Measuring( 测量) Sound
16
Sounds or noises are everywhere. Raindrops are 40 decibels( 分贝)
while fireworks are 140 decibels. What about your headphones? They can
go higher than 100 decibels. To protect your ears, keep your headphones
at about half volume. And don't listen too long. About an hour a day is
safe.
17

A. Helpful but harmful. B. Comfortable and cheap.
C. Valuable but expensive. D. Important and necessary.
10.Which of the following has higher volume than headphones?
A. TV. B. Fireworks. C. City traffic. D. Conversation.

In most situations, light helps us see. But now humans are using too
much of it. In fact, it's a kind of pollution.
According to scientific research, about 2,500 stars can be seen by
the human's eyes. But because of light pollution, you can only see 200
to 300 stars from today's countryside, and no more than ten stars from a
city. In most big cities, people can't see the sky filled with stars like
they did in their childhood.
20
Light pollution influences more than just our view of sky. Research
shows that lots of nighttime light can harm wildlife, too. When birds fly
to another place over cities, they sometimes get lost by bright light and
fly in circles until they drop from tiredness. Sea turtles( 海龟) need
dark beaches for laying eggs, but they can't find good places because of
those bright lights. Too much light at night may even harm human's
health, but scientists are not sure of that. They are still learning more.
In order to stop things from going worse, the governments and
organizations(组织) are working hard to reduce light pollution. Many
cities and towns have taken measures to reduce the use of lights at night.
Lights are used only when and where they are truly needed. They also
shine lights down at the ground instead of up into the sky and use lower
brightness levels.
Hopefully, in the near future, humans can enjoy the clear and
beautiful sky again and all the wildlife will live a peaceful life, too.
22
13.写作手法 How does the writer show the harm to wildlife caused by
light pollution?
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving examples.
C. By showing an experiment. D. By answering questions.
√
23
14.细节归纳 Which of the following belong to the influences of light
pollution?

④Birds can't even find their ways because there is too much light at
night.

teacher. Then join a group of
foragers. Look for wild plants
together. Never eat anything until

[中国传统文化·方言]In China, there are around 130 different
languages in different cities and lots of dialects(方言). These dialects
come from about eight different language groups. Each group is quite
different. For example, a Mandarin(普通话) speaker in northern China
would probably understand very little Cantonese(粤语).
39
Dialects are necessary parts of history. Sheng Guangqi, a teacher at
Shandong University, says, “We can learn about the history of a place by
looking at its dialect.” For example, in Shanxi, there are still many
people who call matches “qu deng”, which means “get a light”. In the
old days, “qu deng” was a piece of small wood with some powder
( 粉末) on it. People used it to make fire.
Sheng thinks we can also learn about the culture from dialects. They
are as important as Mandarin.“Mandarin is useful in many formal (正式的)
situations. But in some art performances, such as local operas and short
plays, dialects play an important role,” he said.
Although it is necessary to protect dialects, Zhang Haoming, an
expert from the Ministry of Education, said making Mandarin popular is
still the most important thing. “We will further promote(推广)
Mandarin. At the same time, we will also protect disappearing languages
and the cultural meaning behind these languages,” he said.
41.How many language groups do dialects come from in China?

42.What can we learn from dialects according to Sheng?

43.What does the dialect “qu deng” in Shanxi mean in Paragraph 2?

saving food.
