[中国传统艺术形式·苗绣]Pan Yuzhen, 77, is an inheritor(继承人)
of the intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产) of Miao embroidery
(刺绣) in Southwest China's Guizhou Province. Pan has often been a
guest on the international fashion stage. These experiences have made her

“The girls can embroider from a very young age. Since I was five

Pan's daughter Zhang Yanmei, who was born in 1977, suffered from
a serious illness at the age of three. Because of the family's big burden,
Pan began to sell Miao embroidery products. She traveled to a number

home in a hurry, bringing a lot of candies and new clothes to her, but
she never mentioned her trouble.
In 1999, Zhang went to Beijing to join her mother after graduating
from high school to do business. At that time, Pan had a stall(摊位)
10

where she met many foreign friends. “They advised me to go abroad and
sell cultural products. Over the 10 years, I went to the United States to

What do Chinese young people think of filial piety(孝道)? Teenagers
share their thoughts on what filial piety means.
As an old saying goes, “Filial piety is the first of the hundred
virtues(美德).” So you can imagine how important it is to respect their elders. Chinese filial piety supports a kind of good beha- vior of the younger people to the elder, just like “crows(乌鸦) feeding back”.
15
We have learned this virtue from our parents and grandparents. The
elderly have worked hard for their family, society and younger
generations. Some of them have brought us the freedom that we now
celebrate, while others have made efforts to create better conditions for
their children. However, with the development of the times, young people spend less time staying with their family. I'd like to call on that
no matter how busy we are, we should spare more time to be with our
parents.
Wang Lining, 14, Chongqing
16
In China, many schools have activities to carry forward filial piety, such as cooking for parents, helping wash their feet or writing a “thank-you card”. By doing these things, we develop stronger love for our parents, which is great! Confucius believed that only if everyone is good to their parents can they be good to other people. Then there won't be many fights. It means that filial piety is not only about loving our parents, but about loving everyone! So I think we all should try our best to be good to our parents. For example, be their side and help them with the housework. These are all actions of the greatest kindness.
Yan Zihan, 13, Liaoning

Pacific pocket mouse is the smallest kind of mouse in North
America.
Pocket mice get their name from the special pouches
(育儿袋) they have on their faces. These pouches are used by the mice
to carry food and the material they need to make their homes underground.
20
The mice are an important part of the environment because they
help spread the seeds of the plants that grow naturally in this sandy area.
Their digging underground also helps the plants grow.
But starting in the early 1930s, humans began taking up more and
more of the area where the mice usually lived. Pacific pocket mice began
disappearing. By the 1970s, scientists believed that the Pacific pocket
mouse had died out. But in 1994, scientists found some small groups of
Pacific pocket mice. These groups were a long way away from each
other, and were often separated by things like roads and buildings.
Starting in 2012, the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance(SDZWA)
began working to help the mice by raising them in captivity(圈养). In
2016, the SDZWA and several other groups helped a group of Pacific
pocket mice start life in a protected area. In 2017, the number of mice
in this area began growing without any help from humans. SDZWA says
that many of the newborn mice at the zoo will return to the wild this
year.
13.Why are Pacific pocket mice important to the environment?
A. Because they help the plants grow.
B. Because they live in the sandy area.
C. Because they have special pouches.
D. Because they keep the seeds as food.

Now, people take trips by watching live streaming(直播) on Tiktok,
Bilibili and others. This is called “cloud tourism(云旅游)”.
Zha Liguo, a 44-year-old man, is a guide. During the May Day
holiday, Zha took a group of visitors to Mount Huang and enjoyed the
sunrise there. A lot of people joined him by watching his live streaming
38
on their phones. It was not Zha's first trip to Mount Huang. Last year,
he stayed there for over 280 days. He showed the beautiful scenery
(风景) and other interesting things in the villages near the mountain
on Tiktok.
A lot of people are interested in Zha's live streaming, so Zha has
lots of followers on Tiktok. “Many people get bored with staying at
home but they have no time to go out. I enjoy myself every time I
enjoy the beautiful scenery, so I want other people to enjoy it,” Zha said.
Usually, people need to spend much time going out for an enjoyable
trip. But they often finish their trip quickly. So they can't really have a
good time. The “cloud tourism” really helps them a lot. Also, the “cloud
tourism” is very convenient. Some people dislike taking a long trip. They
think it's tiring for them to decide how to go, where to live and what to
eat. What's more, the “cloud tourism” also makes a difference to a
place's business. People like to buy things while watching live streaming.
