husband to open such a class in the village. She told her husband that
she wanted to open a class in her hometown, and her husband agreed.
However, before she set up the “small desks”, her husband fell ill
and died. Yan was very sad, but she didn't forget their wish. She rented
8
(租) a room from her uncle, bought some used desks and chairs and
started the class on March 23.
There are 19 students from Grade One to Seven in Yan's class. Yan

own grandchildren. They learn together and work together to solve
problems.
“It is not about teaching, but about company,” Yan said.
After learning that Yan is teaching in the village to help left-behind
children, her old classmates send books to her every now and then to
help her.
Some young people also want to help with “small desks” and Yan is

All of us may have experienced embarrassing moments. It could
have been the time when you pronounced a word wrong in class, wore
your T-shirt backwards or secretly tried to take a picture of someone
while the flash was on.
Though these moments don't harm us a lot, they make us feel upset.
Even if these moments may have faded(消失) after some time, we
would always remember the feeling of strong embarrassment. In fact,
14
these feelings may last for years. When these kinds of feelings return,
they are known as a “cringe attack(羞愧综合症)”.
I get an uncomfortable feeling when I think back on a party my
parents took me to. I ate a bowl of strawberries by myself. My parents
shouted at me for being so selfish. From then on, every time I put a
strawberry into my mouth, my brain just throws that embarrassing scene
back.
Why do these “cringe attacks” still pop up in our daily life even
though the actual events happened weeks, months, or even years ago?
According to researchers, our brains give special attention to feelings that
can be easily noticed. The stronger the feeling is, the stronger the
memory will be.
So how can we deal with this? Well, we can start by trying to be
more objective(客观的) about our past selves. Consider that you are
not alone in your embarrassment—everyone fails or makes silly mistakes.
We should try to accept who we were at that moment and think about
how we can change for the better.
9.Why did the writer talk about his own experience in Paragraph 3?
A. To show his love for strawberries.
B. To explain that he was not really selfish.
C. To show how cringe attacks come into being.
D. To show everyone has embarrassing moments.
10.What's the writer's suggestion about dealing with embarrassing moments?
A. Taking them seriously. B. Just forgetting about them.
C. Trying to improve ourselves. D. Comparing them with others'.

Everyone tries to get to school on time. But when bad weather gives
you trouble, can you still make it before the bell rings?
In northern China during spring, big sandstorms(沙尘暴) often
make trouble for students and everyone else. When the sky is dark with
sand, buses and cars all move much more slowly. Sometimes, people
can't even see for 20 meters. Sandstorms usually happen in spring. They
have happened in more than 10 provinces in northern China.
19
People in southern China don't have to worry about this kind of bad
weather. Most of the sand comes from Gansu and Inner Mongolia
(内蒙古). In northern China, lots of places have few trees and don't
get much rain. People there have been cutting down too many trees.
When there aren't many trees, the ground can't keep enough water. Over
the years, the ground dries up and turns to sand. When spring comes and
the ice melts(融化), the ground becomes looser(更松散的). Strong
winds take the loose sand into the sky.
Sandstorms are bad for people's health. If people take in too much
sand, they could cough or have asthma(哮喘). Sandstorms also give
farmers lots of problems. Sometimes their sheep get lost in the storms
and never get back home. The winds also destroy farmers' houses.
To stop sandstorms, you can ask your parents to help you plant
some trees this spring. If you see people cutting down too many trees,
tell them about the dangers of sandstorms, and ask your government to
stop them from cutting.
21
13.Which of the following provinces in China is often hit by sandstorms?
A. Fujian. B. Yunnan. C. Jiangsu. D. Gansu.
14.According to the text, which cannot be caused by sandstorms?
A. Traffic problems. B. Health problems.
C. Noise pollution. D. The loss of farm animals.
15.What does the underlined word “destroy” in Paragraph 4 probably
mean?
A. Build. B. Cover. C. Damage. D. Turn.
