As a high-altitude archaeologist ( someone who studies old things
found on mountains), Luke climbs to the tops of mountains to explore
places where people used to pray( 祈祷). So far, he has climbed more
than 100 mountains over 16,500 feet high.
Growing up in Argentina, Luke was always interested in ancient
civilizations( 文明). His dream was to live and work near the
mountains. In school, Luke worked hard to reach his goal. Math was a
subject he really had to conquer!
8
Now, Luke uses math all the time. “How many feet will we climb?
How long will it take? What time do we start?” He knows that careful
planning can mean the difference between success and failure.
In 1999, Luke and his team climbed Llullaillaco, a mountain in
Argentina. It was a very difficult climb, with blowing snow, strong winds
and thin air.
When the explorers finally reached the top, they found three frozen
Incan mummies( 木乃伊). Two girls and a boy were buried 500 years
ago. The mummies still have hair on their arms, which makes them the
best-preserved mummies in the world. The explorers also found cloth,
silver and gold pieces and other valuables. “This was like meeting
someone from the ancient past,” says Luke.
This journey was long and hard, but that did not stop Luke from
climbing. “Just think of the Incas who climbed these mountains hundreds
of years ago,” he says. “They lived through the same conditions.” With
preparation and courage, Luke proves one thing: no mountain or goal is
too big to reach!

Games and sports teach people a lot of useful skills, as well as
helping them to keep healthy.
Lots of people love team sports. They enjoy being a member of a
team, so they have the chance to take part in the matches and events.
They also enjoy sharing the success or failure with others. While playing,
people have to support each other. The members can get courage from
the team. If they can't do that, they can never win. Team games also
13
teach you that losing is not the end of the world. You will always have
another chance and you will be more successful against your competitors
next time.
However, there are many people who just don't like team sports.
They have to find other ways to exercise. Perhaps they had a terrible
experience with a kind of sport when they were younger. Maybe they
feel embarrassed because they think they're not very good at a sport.
Team sports are usually about competitions, and for some people, this is
too stressful. So individual activities are more suitable for them. For
example, some people prefer jumping ropes in the park and many people
enjoy exercising in their houses by following workout(锻炼) videos
posted online. Hundreds of free workouts are produced online every day,
so you can have your own trainer without leaving your own house.
As we know, there are many types of exercise. No matter what
sports you choose, they'll always lead active lives!
9.Why do some people love team sports?
A. Team sports are easier to succeed.
B. They can get courage from matches.

There are different kinds of plants and animals on the earth and
they get their food in different ways. Food chains are just used to show
who eats what in a very simple way.
Food Chains
Here are some examples of food chains.
A garden food chain might look like this:
18
Humans can also be part of a food chain. A farm food chain could
look like this:
19
A food chain shows how plants and animals are connected with each
other based on the foods they eat. Food chains are different depending
on the habitat. A habitat is the scientific name for a place where animals
and plants live. Habitats can be very different from each other, so a
garden food chain would be very different from a farm food chain.
Food chains usually start with a green plant. This is because plants
can directly change sunlight into energy that they can use for themselves.
These plants create or produce their own food. They use this food to
grow leaves, flowers, fruit and seeds( 种子).
20
Food Chain Disruptions( 中断)
When a food chain is broken, it may result in a bad situation. An
example is over fishing. Over the years, humans have been catching too
many fish at a quick speed, leaving not enough to keep a healthy
population. Because of this, other animals such as the turtles are
endangered( 濒危). So, humans should make sure our activities don't
harm the ecosystem( 生态系统).
21
13.写作手法How does the text explain “food chains”?
A. By telling stories. B. By listing numbers.
C. By giving examples. D. By asking a question.
14.词汇还原What may be put in ▲ in the second food chain?
A. chickens B. trees C. sunlight D. flowers
√
√
22
15.Why do food chains usually start with a green plant?
A. Because plants always need light and water to grow.
B. Because plants can use sunlight to make their own energy.
C. Because plants always have leaves, flowers, fruit and seeds.
D. Because plants grow by themselves in a garden or on a farm.
√
23
16.What can be the best title for this text?

[中国传统艺术形式·泥塑]Clay Figurine Zhang
( Ni Ren Zhang) is a famous folk art in Tianjin and has a
history of nearly 200 years. It's a kind of painted figurine
(小塑像) made of clay(黏土).
38
The figurines are loved both at home and abroad. But making one is
difficult and requires a high level of skill. It sometimes takes months to
complete a fine figurine. And because it places much stress on the use
of materials, the figurines can still be lifelike after a long time.
Clay Figurine Zhang was created by Zhang Mingshan in the late
Qing Dynasty. Zhang grew up in Tianjin. He started to learn how to
make clay figurines from his father when he was a child and soon
developed a great interest in it. He watched people from different walks
(行业) of life and put what he saw into his figurines. He also added
western skills to this traditional art. He made quite a name for himself
with these clay figurines.
Now, this great folk has been passed down to Zhang Yu, the sixth
generation(代) clay figurine maker in this family. Zhang Yu works very
hard to develop his skills and carry the art forward. And to introduce this
art to the young, he also teaches in some universities.
“New generations should be allowed to learn the Chinese culture
they are interested in and improve the culture with their own ideas,”
Zhang Yu said.
