It was Naomi's first day at the new school. She was more
embarrassed(尴尬的) than she had ever been before, because her mom
had completely ruined(破坏) it by coming to school wearing a stupid
sweater and a skirt. “Didn't she know that I was nervous enough about
starting in the new school?” Naomi sat sadly in the dining hall. Nobody
came near her, and it was easy to see the reason: Everyone was probably
laughing at her.
10
Just when Naomi thought things couldn't get more embarrassing, a
girl named Emily came up to her and talked to her. It made Naomi feel
surprised. After a short silence, Emily sat down on the seat and then
continued, “I saw you in the hall just now, too. Was that your mom with
you?” Naomi was unable to say anything, just nodding.
“You're so lucky!” Emily replied, “My mom doesn't even live with
me. I haven't talked to her for two months.”
Suddenly, everything seemed different to Naomi. “I'm sorry,” she
finally said quietly.
For the rest of lunch, the two girls talked. At the end of lunch, they
had decided to be friends with each other. On the way to the classroom,

Around 130 million books have been published in the
human history. A reader will read at most 6,000 books in
his life. Most of them won't be so much fun or very
unforgettable. Books are like people. We meet many but fall in love with
a small part of them.
22
Perhaps we will only remember about thirty books. They will be
different for each of us, but they affect(影响) us in similar ways.
Books make us show our feelings better. When we see a bird flying
in the sky, we have a beautiful feeling, but we may find it hard for us
to use words to show our feelings and finally we just say, “That's so
nice.” However, a good writer can describe it wonderfully. He shows us
the angle(角度) of the wing, the slow movement of the largest branch
(树枝) of a tree and the angle of the mouth in a smile.
Great writers build bridges for us so that we can communicate with
each other. They depict the similar experiences of us, and show us what
we can share with each other and how we can help each other.
They also help us to feel. By reading a book, we meet someone.
Perhaps she is very beautiful, young, smart but dying, and we feel sad
about her pain and the unfairness of the world. Or perhaps she is poor,
weak but hard-working, and we find the courage to face the difficulties
in life through her story.
24
13.What do Paragraph 1 and Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. A person should read as many books as possible.
B. A person should read at least 30 books in his life.
C. A person can read many books and remember all of them.
D. A person may read lots of books, but he only remembers some of
them.
14.What does the underlined word “depict” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Protect. B. Describe. C. Hide. D. Train.
√

25
15.细节归纳 What are the characters of great writers?
a. They can describe our feelings wonderfully.
b. They can build bridges to communicate with each other.
c. They can help us meet with beautiful but sad ladies in reality.
d. They can encourage us to overcome the difficulties bravely.

Language is the way we communicate with each other. It includes
speaking, writing and using hand and face movements, known as sign
language. Unlike countries, languages have no borders(边界) and can
connect people around the world.
41
Speaking another language helps you talk to people you may not
understand, and makes you feel more connected to them. A girl from
Hungary, Havana, who is aged 12, says speaking Hungarian as well as
English means she can talk to her friends from England. This makes her
feel closer to her British friends because they're able to share their
interests. Learning another language can also help you gain confidence—
for example, by being able to chat to local people when you travel.
Studies show that being able to speak two languages also exercises the
brain and makes you better at concentrating on more than one thing at a
time.
Alex Rawlings is a language teacher and writer who speaks more
than 15 languages. He finds it's easier to learn words that he can see or
hear, rather than from a list. “For example, the words of a song are
more memorable because they rhyme(押韵) and are sung,” he says.
It's also important to understand why you learn a language. Rawlings
suggests writing down reasons why you want to learn the language and
keep reminding yourself of them. “I've met lots of friends through my
languages,” says Rawlings. “The more you learn, the easier it gets.”
