A man made his living by collecting coconuts in
the countryside. One day, he went to a village that he
had never been to before.
Towards the end of the day, his wagon(马车) was
filled with coconuts. He decided to head home, because
it was getting late. He wished to know how long it would take to get
back to his village.
8
He saw an old man and stopped to ask for directions.
“Excuse me,” he said, “Could you please tell me how long it will
take to get to Carson from this village?”
The old man showed him the right direction and said, “If you go
slowly, it will take only a short while to get home. But if you go
quickly, it will take a long time and you will not get home until late
in the night.”
The man could not understand the answer. He didn't believe the old
man's suggestion was friendly. He gave the man an angry look and hit
his horse to make it hurry. The horse began to run quickly. But soon,
coconuts began to fall from the wagon. Each time, the man got off to
collect the fallen coconuts and put them back into his wagon.
The faster he went, the more coconuts fell from his wagon, and the
more time he had to take to pick them up. So he went home very late
at last. However, if he had travelled slowly, maybe none of the coconuts
would have fallen, and the man would have arrived home much earlier.
And so, as the old man said, go slowly and it will take only a
short while.
5.Why was the man angry?

You may think that having less water is because of having less rain,
but it is now a problem in southern China, an area in which it rains
often.
The government said that Shenzhen was facing its most serious
water shortage ever. Other cities in the southern part of China, like
Chengdu and Guangzhou, are also becoming “thirsty” though they have
more rain and are close to more rivers and lakes, The Paper reported.
So why are they still short of water?
15
In these big cities, populations are growing fast. As a result, people
and factories need more water.
Climate change is making the water problem worse. Most cities in
Guangdong Province depend on the Dongjiang River as their main source
of water. In 2021, the river was reported to be drying up.
Water pollution also makes it harder to get clean drinking water.
Factories and farms don't use water well. Some cities have enough rain
but don't have big lakes or reservoirs(水库) to store water, so the water
goes out into the sea.
But there is a hidden water resource(资源) right under our feet.
That's “groundwater”. We can't see it. However, it plays an important role
in our lives. About 98 percent of Earth's fresh water is groundwater. It is
60 times as plentiful as the fresh water in lakes and rivers. But in many
places, people overuse and pollute groundwater. We should pay more
attention to this hidden water resource.
9.Why are Chengdu and Guangzhou becoming “thirsty”?
A. Because it rains too little there.
B. Because they are far away from rivers.
C. Because they don't have groundwater at all.
D. Because of climate change and water pollution.
10.What made the water problem worse in Guangdong Province?
A. Climate change. B. Population growth.
C. Water pollution. D. Hidden resources.

11.文章结构How is the text organized?
A. B. C. D.
12.写作意图What's the writer's purpose of writing the text?
A. To introduce how to use groundwater.
B. To explain how to solve the pollution.
C. To show the relationship between water and rain.
D. To call on people to face the water shortage problem.

When Oxford University Press(出版社) chose “rizz” as its 2023
Word of the Year, many people asked, “Rizz? Is there such a word?”
Well, rizz means the ability to attract a person. Are you good at making
friends? Do your classmates often laugh loudly at your jokes? Then you
probably have rizz. As in “to rizz up someone”, it means to attract
someone. The word first appeared on social media as teen slang(俚语)
and became popular after the Spider-Man actor Tom Holland said he had
“no rizz”.
20
Rizz is not the only hot slang word. “Jeepers” is another. People use
it to express shock. And the word “tea” is no longer just a “drink”. It
also means “gossip(闲聊)”. Similarly, here in China, words like
“xianyanbao” have a new meaning.
These changes show that languages are alive. A healthy language,
researchers say, should always see new words being created, words being
borrowed from other languages and old words taking on new meanings.
The changes also show that young people have more influences on
society.
As we look back on 2023, one thing we can't miss is AI. AI
systems have “rizzed up” many users around the world with their ability
to write articles, draw pictures and sum up(总结) books. However, it's
hard to imagine an AI system coining a new word without any instruc-
tions and then influencing the ways we humans speak and write.
You should be proud of your ability to play with words. But while
you try to create another slang word, remember to be polite.
22
13.What did young English speakers say “Jeepers!” to express?
A. Pride. B. Surprise.
C. Happiness. D. Embarrassment.
14.What made languages alive according to the writer?
A. The change of books.
B. The influence of researchers.
C. The development of AI.
D. The creativity of young people.
√
√
23
15.What does the underlined word “coining” in Paragraph 4 probably
mean?
A. Creating. B. Repairing. C. Learning. D. Reading.
16.观点态度What's the writer's attitude towards using slang?
A. He can't stand it. B. In general, he supports it.
C. He's against it. D. He doesn't care about it.

Clara Prado has worked as an English teacher for more than twenty
years. In a recent interview, she told us her own experience of learning
and teaching English.
Reporter: How did you learn English yourself?
39
Clara: I started learning English when I was about six or seven
years old. A new language school opened near my home. I started
attending classes twice a week. During my teenage years, I attended
several international youth meetings. I also went to Australia. I learned a
lot from communicating with native English speakers.
Reporter: What's the best part of teaching English for you?
Clara: Teachers are a fun group of people. They often get excited
about a challenge. Many teachers almost always find a way to make
things work. I've learned a lot from them.
And then there are the students. There is nothing better in life than
to see them realize their dreams.
Reporter: What suggestions do you always give to your students?
Clara: As a language learner, you have to be comfortable with
making mistakes. The goal is to be able to communicate with others.
Learning a language can be a lifelong process. No one can learn to
speak a language well overnight. You will be speaking just a little more
every day.
Reporter: What challenges do you think learners face today?
Clara: I think the biggest challenge today is the unknown. We have
no way of knowing what will happen in the future, so how can you
prepare? Well, you can't be prepared for everything. But you can equip
yourself with creativity and the ability to keep learning throughout your
life. Most importantly, you must carry on.
