Passage 1(23-24八年级下·辽宁大连市·期末)
One animal walks slowly, but we like it very much. Sloths (树懒) live in the forests of South and Central America. They move so slowly that algae (水藻) grow on their bodies. They give the sloths a green colour that helps them to hide from predators in the forest.
This green is a lucky “color” for sloths. That’s because most of them are too slow to run away from predators. And they are even slower on the ground than they are in the trees. Some walk only four meters every minute on the ground.
Why do sloths move so slowly? It has a lot to do with their food. Sloths may all look the same to us. But there are in fact two main types of sloth. One has two toes and the other has three toes. The two-toed sloth seat both plants and animals. And the three-toed sloths only eat tree leaves and flower buds.
Leaves and buds provide very little energy. Sloths save energy by not moving very often. They sleep and rest a lot. Some even sleep up to twenty hours a day!

Passage 2(23-24八年级下·辽宁大连市·期末)
After college,I started working in an office and began to gain weight (增重). I would eat sweet bread and drink coffee on my way to work.I loved to eat snacks during work. I went out for lunch every day and ate all night after work. Within two years, I gained about 34 kilograms. I was always unhappy with my body and felt uncomfortable in it.
I needed some help from my parents and my workmates, but I failed. In September 2012, I went to a work event. The host asked us to write down the 10 happiest and saddest things in our lives so far that year. I couldn’t think of anything happy, but I wrote down 15 sad things that made all friends amazed. Most of them had something to do with my weight or my lack of confidence. That day, I knew I had to make a change.
The next day,I started my weight-loss journey. I tried to change one small thing every day. For example, I added skim milk (脱脂牛奶) instead of creamer (咖啡伴侣) to my coffee. I started to make healthy lunches at home and bring them to work. Slowly, I adapted (适应) to a diet of mostly lean meats (瘦肉) and vegetables.
At the same time, I started exercising daily. I would, for example, take the stairs instead of the lift. I also started working out at the gym and at home.
After three years, I finally lost more than 30 kilograms of weight.
What’s my biggest piece of advice? Don’t wait to feel motivated (有动力的) in order to get started. Start today and make one little change every day. Getting healthy is a lifelong journey and a lifestyle change!

Passage 8(23-24八年级下·辽宁大连市·期末)
①Which planet is the most beautiful in our solar system? Many people may answer “Saturn” (土星). Saturn is a funny-looking planet. It has beautiful rings. Of all the planets in the solar system, Saturn’s rings are the biggest and brightest. According to scientists, however, these rings will one day disappear completely.
②How did Saturn get its rings in the first place? Science has no sure answer. But there is a popular theory: Some small planets ran into each other with Saturn’s moons. Earth has only one moon. But Saturn has at least 60 moons. And this left behind a large amount of ice and rock pieces. These pieces are different in size. Some are as small as a grain of sand. Others are as large as a house.
③These small pieces began to travel around Saturn. Saturn’s gravity (引力) pulled them toward it. At the same time, the speed of their orbit (轨道) tried to throw them into space. Over time, these pieces of ice and rock formed rings around Saturn.
④A new study, however, suggests that Saturn’s gravity is winning. About ten tons of “ring matter” is falling into Saturn every second. If this continues, the planet’s ring system will disappear in 100 million to 300 million years’ time.
⑤According to scientists, Saturn’s rings are between 10 million and 100 million years old. “We’re lucky to be able to see Saturn’s huge ring system.” One of the scientists said. “Some of the planets in our solar system only have very thin rings today. Perhaps we just missed seeing their huge ring systems!”
⑥Stars and planets die and are born in the universe. Will the change of Saturn’s rings affect our planet?

A.Every planet has a ring system.
B.All planets have many thin rings.
C.Saturn’s rings are the oldest in the solar system.
D.We can luckily see Saturn’s ring system today.
32.What will the author most probably talk about if he continues to write his passage?
A.How the disappearance of Saturn’s rings will influence the Earth.

Passage 17(23-24八年级下·辽宁大连市·期末)
In space, astronauts have to solve (解决) two problems: How to get food and how to keep their spaceship clean. They need to solve them in order to stay alive. They are in a spaceship far from the earth, and they need to take care of everything themselves. They need to be sure they have what they need to live there, because the astronauts may be in space for weeks.
Here is how they solved the food problem. At first, the astronauts took tubes of semi-liquid (半流质的) food with them into space. They look like the toothpaste (牙膏) you use when you brush your teeth. The food did not taste great, but because astronauts did not need to take dishes with them, they had no dishes to wash.
Today’s spaceships have a bigger menu. Astronauts can eat from bowls. In fact, they take cereal (谷类食物) and other foods with them. The foods are kept in a special way to stay fresh. They have a kitchen in the spaceship. Its oven can heat food to 170 degrees. The kitchen has water and sets of meals that come on plates. The astronauts choose their menu before they go into space. They take a lot of food with them.
How do they keep the kitchen clean? They do not have to worry about mice or other rodents (啮齿动物). They make sure that there are no rodents before the ship leaves. But sometimes mice travel on the ship. Those mice are part of experiments. They live in cages.
How do astronauts keep their plates clean? That is another health problem the astronauts solve. They need to stay healthy in space. To carry a lot of water to wash plates would be much heavier. They take wet wipes (纸巾) in bags. They use them to clean plates. Therefore, their kitchen is clean and they stay healthy.

Finally, Christmas Eve arrived. I took out my longest, cleanest stocking and put it on my bed. However, when I woke up early on Christmas Day and checked the stocking, there was nothing in it—There was no Santa in the world!
From then on, I told my friends the story every December. I had to tell it in a funny way, or I would cry.
How could I know that Santa was just late? Nine years ago, on Christmas Eve, a man knocked on my door. It read: “For Becky—I have missed you since the second grade, but you’ve always lived in my heart. Santa.” Then I recognized (认出) Jill’s handwriting. I met her just two months ago. Do you want to be an astronaut in the future? Every year on April 24, it’s Space Day of China. It’s a day to celebrate the country’s growth in space exploration (探索).
Ever since Yang Liwei made it to space in 2003, as many as 20 Chinese astronauts have gone to space.
In space, astronauts face many problems. There is little gravity (重力) there, which affects their bodies. Also, being away from family and friends and stuck in a tiny spaceship for a long time can make them feel sad or stressed out. What’s more, if something goes wrong on their mission suddenly, they have to work out how to fix it under huge pressure (压力). That’s why astronauts have to be smart, strong, and ready for any challenge before they can go to space.
To make sure that Chinese astronauts complete their missions and return to Earth safely, “Eight types, including over 200 subjects of training, are set,” Huang Weifen, chief designer of the astronaut system for China’s manned space project, told CCTV News. Apart from physical training, it also includes basic science knowledge and mock (模拟) missions. Before astronauts can go to space, they train like this for at least three and a half years.
One of the hardest parts of the training for astronauts is the underwater training. This helps them get ready for the weightless environment in space. Huang explained that astronauts wear diving suits that weigh more than 100 kilograms and stay underwater for six hours at a time. Moving around in the water with such a heavy suit is really tiring. Huang said that one astronaut, Nie Haisheng, even lost 2 kilograms after one underwater training exercise.

But sometimes, things can get out of balance. A swamp (沼泽) in Florida is not in balance. What is the problem? There are too many large snakes. The snakes didn’t live in the swamp in the past. Why? Because some pet keepers let their pet snakes stay in the swamp. Their numbers become bigger and bigger. There are too many large snakes now. They are eating too much of the native wildlife (当地野生动物). So they are bad for the natural environment in the swamp. The snakes eat rabbits and other small animals. In the end, there is less food for large fish and wild cats. Now all of the wildlife in the swamp is becoming hungry.

Sloths are rare (稀少的) now. We must protect them. Nobody can hunt them in South and Central America.

I didn’t know of Santa Claus (圣诞老人) until the second grade when my family moved to America. My classmates told me that a fat man would come and put toys in one’s stocking (长筒袜) on Christmas Eve.
He said, “I’ve been looking for you for twenty-five years.” He gave me a red stocking filled with candy and toys, and left. On top of the stocking was a card. It read: “For Becky—I have missed you since the second grade, but you’ve always lived in my heart. Santa.” Then I recognized (认出) Jill’s handwriting. I met her just two months ago. Passage 22(23-24八年级下·辽宁大连市·期末)

Named after the ancient city of Xi’an in Shanxi province, the movie showed us amazing life of poet Li Bai in fact. It also brought us back to the golden age in Chinese history—Tang Dynasty. A healthy living place must be in balance (平衡). What does this stand for (代表)? Here it is. As a rule, rabbits eat plants. The rabbits keep the plants under control. Tigers eat rabbits. They make sure there are not too many rabbits. This is how the nature stays balanced.
But sometimes, things can get out of balance. A swamp (沼泽) in Florida is not in balance. What is the problem? There are too many large snakes. The snakes didn’t live in the swamp in the past. Why?
