Qian Xuesen, the “Founder of China’s Space Program”, stands among China’s greatest modern scientists. Born in 1911 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, he showed great talent in science at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and received his engineering degree there in 1934.
In 1935, Qian went to America for further education, first at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (麻省理工学院) and later at the California Institute of Technology (加州理工学院). There, he became an expert in rocket science. In 1955, Qian made the life-changing decision to return to China with his family, driven by a strong wish to serve his country.
Starting from almost nothing in 1950s Beijing, Qian built China’s space research program. He formed a team that was made up of experts from maths, physics, and engineering. Camarria Williams, a 13-year-old student from Chicago, made a big scientific discovery in 2024.
She found something special during her school’s nature study project. Her school worked together with university scientists and an environmental group. Students were asked to collect natural samples (样本) to find materials that can fight harmful bacteria (细菌).
While most classmates chose water or leaves, Camarria had a different idea. She collected goose poop (粪便) from a park pond. “Birds eat many different things, so their waste might have special bacteria,” she explained. She took the samples to school carefully. Then scientists studied them in a lab. They found a special bacteria in her samples. This bacteria could fight harmful bacteria and also produce a natural chemical. Scientists think this chemical might help treat two types of cancer (癌症).
The discovery was published in a science magazine. Camarria was named as one of the writers.
This was very important to her because her mother, aunt, and grandmother all had cancer. “I hope this helps people like my family,” she said. Researchers say more tests are needed, but they are excited about this new possibility.
Camarria’s teacher said the project taught students real science skills. “They learned to collect samples safely and think creatively,” the teacher explained. Now Camarria wants to study biology when she grows up. Her advice to other students is “Don’t be afraid to explore unusual ideas—great discoveries can come from surprising places!”
This story shows that even young students can make important contributions (贡献) to science. Camarria’s courage and creativity inspire us all to look closely at the world around us.

Lying on London’s famous Millennium Bridge, British artist Ben Wilson paints on a piece of dried gum (口香糖). It has been crushed flat (压扁的) into the ground.
“The important thing is, the gum is below the metal ground, ” said Wilson. “The beauty of it is that they’ re all different shapes and sizes, ” he continued, describing pieces of gum. Wilson sees possibility in things most people avoid looking at. The dried gum is a chance to turn a piece of waste into something beautiful.
The artwork is also a way to surprise walkers. “It gets people to take a closer look at the ground and discover a hidden world, ” Wilson said.
Back in his north London art room, Wilson creates paintings on the surface of a small mosaic tile (马赛克瓷砖). These tiles will be part of a collection on London’s underground train walls. The images are more personal than the gum works, according to Wilson.
Wilson was born in London to artist parents. He remembers working with clay from the age of three. He had his first art show when he was around 10 or 11 years old. After that, his interest turned to waste, also called trash. He has painted gum and other pieces of trash for 20 years.
The dried gum surface creates a space where Wilson says he can paint without harming public objects. Government officers have cleaned off much of the artist’s public street art. But the hundreds of gum paintings on Millennium Bridge still remain for all to see.
根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
16.Where does Ben Wilson paint his artwork on pieces of dried gum?
17.How does Wilson’s artwork surprise people walking by?
18.What does Ben Wilson create in his north London art room?

A man was always angry with others. so he couldn’t get along well with them. He heard there lived an artist who could control his temper (脾气) very well by the sea, so he went to pay a visit. He asked the artist, “Why is my temper so bad? Can I change it?
The artist said with a smile, “Yes, you can.” He gave the man a bag of stones and told him, “Each time you lose your temper, polish (打磨) the edges (边缘) and corners of one stone. Come to me again after you polish all the stones in this bag.”
The man returned home with the stones. He remembered the artist’s words and did as he told him. Day after day, the stones in the bag were getting fewer and fewer.
Two months later, he went to see the artist again. The artist said to him, “You have polished all the stones. Can you recall your unhappy things?” The man tried to think hard, but he had no idea of the stories of many unhappy things.
The artist pointed to the beach and said, “Look at those stones with edges and corners. In fact, they will become smooth after years of ebb and flow (潮涨潮落).”
With the words, the artist picked up a stone, pointed to the print on the beach and said, “The bigger edges and corners the stones have, the deeper their prints will leave on the beach. Similarly, people are like stones: each time you lose your temper, you will leave a print in the heart of another person. So you should polish the stones in your heart.”

Chinese traditional painting and dance are two important parts of the art world. But what about when they meet each other?
This year, a dance drama called Poetic Dance: The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting (《只此青绿》) was shown on 2022 CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala. It became popular overnight.
According to CCTV, this poetic dance got the idea from the 900-year-old Chinese painting A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains (《千里江山图》). Created by Song Dynasty painter Wang Ximeng at 18, the painting is amazing in its sweeping size, rich coloration and expressive details. It shows a Chinese blue-green landscape: “mountains and groupings of endless rise and fall between cloudless sky and rippling water”.
The dance shows the Chinese traditional beauty of the painting. The dancers each had a different hairstyle, which looked like a mountain rock. The clothes that they wore were shades of green and blue, which is also poetic show of the mountains and rivers. When the dancers swayed beautifully, the audience seemed to be looking at the moving mountains and rivers. Huge mountains and rivers are coming to life! More than a thousand years later, green mountains and rivers still wow people as they did long ago.
In recent years, more and more modern shows highlight Chinese traditional culture and have received warm welcome, especially among young people. They hug Chinese culture and are proud of it.

When you wake up at night with worries going through your head, it can be hard for you to fall back to sleep. Knowing what to do can help you when worries stop you from sleeping.
It can feel like you’re the only person lying awake with thoughts going around your head in the middle of the night, but it’s usual. Worrying at night feels uncomfortable, so it’s important that you’ re kind to yourself. Think about what will help you. That could be waking up an adult to tell them about your worries.
By paying attention to your body instead of your thoughts, your brain can calm down. One way to do this is to get comfortable in bed, then focusing your attention on your feet. Next, move your attention up to your lower legs, then to your body until you get to the top of your head.
If you get to the top of your head and you still can’t sleep, change positions to make you comfortable again, and then slowly do the same exercise, from head to feet. This exercise takes time and you have to really pay attention, so it can help your brain stop worrying, and then you can fall asleep slowly.
根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
41.What does the writer think of lying awake with thought?
42.Who could we ask for help when we wake up at night?
43.How can our brain calm down at night according to the writer?

It was thought that Treasure Island was the product of Robert Stevenson’s imagination. However, recent research has found the true story of this work. Robert, a Scotsman, had lived abroad for many years. In 1881, he returned to Scotland for a holiday with his wife and his son.
Every morning, they went out for a walk over the hills. They enjoyed this for several days before the weather suddenly turned terrible. Kept indoors by the heavy rain, Lloyd, Robert’s son, felt bored. To keep his son happy, Robert asked him to do some drawing.
One morning, his son came to Robert with a beautiful map of an island. Robert noticed that his son drew a large cross in the middle of the island. He asked the reason. “That’s the buried treasure.” said his son. Robert suddenly thought out an adventure (冒险) story from the boy’s reply. While the rain was pouring, Robert sat down to write a story. He made the writer a twelve-year-old boy just like Lloyd.
But who would be molded (塑造) into the hero—a pirate (海盗)? Robert had a good friend Henley who walked with the help of a wooden leg. Robert had always wanted to mold such a man in a story, who was Long John Silver, the pirate with a wooden leg. So thanks to a rainy September, a friend with a wooden leg and the imagination of a twelve-year-old boy, we have a great story in the English language.
根据短文内容,回答下列问题。
46.When did Robert Stevenson return to Scotland?
47.How often did the Stevensons go out for a walk over the hills?
48.What did Robert ask his son to do to keep the boy happy?
