Passage 5
After 84 days, the old man looked up and saw the bird was circling again now.
“The bird has found fish,” he said aloud. No flying fish broke the surface of the sea and there was no scattering (散落) of bait (诱饵) fish in the water. But as the old man watched, a small tuna (金枪鱼) rose in the air, turned and dropped head first into the water. The tuna shone silver in the sun and after he had dropped back into the water, more tuna started jumping out of the water in all directions, chasing after the bait. They were circling it and driving it.
“If they don’t travel too fast, I will get into them.” the old man thought, and he watched the tuna making the water white and the bird diving down to catch the bait fish that were forced to the surface in their fear.
“The bird is a great help,” the old man said. Just then, the fishing line at the back of the boat grew tight under his foot. He dropped his oars (船桨) and felt the weight of the tuna, and began to pull it in. When he pulled, he could see the blue back of the fish in the water and its golden sides. Finally, he lifted the fish into the boat. The tuna lay in the boat in the sun. He was small and shaped like a bullet. His big eyes stared when he hit against the floor of the boat with his tail. The old man hit him on the head to calm him down and then pushed him to the back of the boat.
“He’ll make a beautiful bait. He’ll weigh ten pounds,” the old man said aloud.

I was playing at the front gate, trying to decide whether to walk down the street to play with Jenny, when I saw a poor man coming up the road.
“Hello, little girl,” he said, “is your mama at home?”
I nodded and opened the gate to let him get in the yard. He looked like all the homeless men who came to my home before. His messy hair hung below a shapeless hat, and his old shirt and trousers had been rained on and slept in. He smelled bad.
He walked to the door. When my mother appeared, he asked, “Lady, could you spare something to eat?”
“I think so. Please sit on the step.”
Later, my mother came back and handed him a sandwich made from homemade bread and generous pieces of boiled meat. She also gave him a bottle of milk. “I thank you, lady,” he said.
I played at the gate, watching the man wolf down the sandwich and empty the cup. After finishing the food, he stood up and walked back through the gate. “▲” he told me on the way out.
Jenny had said all the homeless men told each other who would feed them. “They never come to my house!” she had said proudly and happily.
“So why does Mama feed the poor man?” I wondered. I walked inside. “Jenny’s mama says those men are too lazy to work. Why do we feed them?”
My mother smiled. “Sweetheart, we don’t know why these men don’t work,” she said, “but they were babies once. And their mamas loved them, just like I love you.” She put her hands on my shoulders and drew me close to her.

Passage 7
When I was a child, my parents read bedtime stories to my sister and me each night. It is one of my favourite childhood memories.
My sister and I had many books. As I grew older, I enjoyed staying in my father’s “library” and would read for hours each day. To make me play with friends like other kids, my parents would have to take books away from me.
I see reading as an important part of my life, not a hobby to pass my time. For me, reading opens up a whole new world. It encourages new ideas, increases my knowledge, and makes me an everyday learner.
Although I enjoy communicating with people, I’m an introverted person and really need my alone time. Last year, I had several experiences that began to make me feel worried about my being shy, and I felt that it would make me lose many chances. Around this time, I read Susan Cain’s book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking. This book helped me understand myself. And I’m not afraid to be myself.
Charlie Jones says, “You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.” I’ve met great people and travelled around the world — all from my chair or bed with a book in my hands.

Since April in 2021, China has opened it to the world. By sharing it with more scientists, the powerful tool will help human look deeper into the universe.
The idea of building the huge telescope was from the Chinese scientist, Nan Rendong.
He began working on the FAST project in 1994. He led a research team to work around the clock. The biggest and most important challenge was where to build the telescope. Nan and his team spent more than ten years climbing up and down the mountains to find the right place. Finally, they chose a quiet mountain valley (山谷). It’s good for listening for weak signals. Then Nan began to work there most of his time. Life was quite hard in deep mountains, but he only cared about how to finish the project. With little experience, it was difficult to build such a huge telescope. With great effort and a strong will, he led his team to overcome all kinds of difficulties and finally completed the project in 2016.

Later, my mother came back and handed him a sandwich made from homemade bread and generous pieces of boiled meat. She also gave him a bottle of milk. “I thank you, lady,” he said.

It was the largest one they had ever seen. Then, Tom’s father looked at his watch. It was 7 p.m.—five hours before the fish season opened.

What would you do if your best friend and you have different ideas with each other? Karina is my best friend. When we first met in a camp, we quickly became friends. And we would be friends forever. So it was hard to imagine that I would argue with her on some things. Whatever we did, we were always together.
But then something happened in another summer camp. “Did you hear about the shopping mall news?” asked one of our friends Levar. “They want to cut down some trees to make a shopping centre.”
“That’s terrible!” I said, “We have to stop that.”
“I differ with you on that point,” said Karina, “The shopping centre would give new jobs to people. Some people really need work.”
“But think of all the poor birds. They would lose their homes!” I said. “I want people to have jobs, but it doesn’t mean cutting down trees.”
