The long history of China leaves us thousands of stories. Now, here is one book that tells some of them. Do you think you would enjoy following the lives of people in ancient China? If so, you can try A New Account of Tales of the World (《世说新语》). It’s said that the scholar (学者) Liu Yiqing finished this book.
In this book, there are more than 600 characters, such as writers, painters, musicians, and other artists living during the Han, Wei and Jin dynasties. Some describe what the characters look like. Some are about what the characters are good at. Some tell readers why the characters think this way. Each story has its own topic but every article has something in common — showing someone’s most special traits. And all the characters in the book are real in history. The book has 1,130 small stories about these characters. Many stories are one hundred words long or even shorter. And many stories may not be facts. They might come from another novel. Or people heard something about one character and then it became a story in this book. It sounds like A New Account of Tales of the World is simply a storybook. But in fact, many scholars like Lu Xun ever talked about how important this book was. Well, how does this special book have its place in Chinese literature (文学)?
First, it’s the earliest book of this kind so it became something special in the Chinese literature’s development. Second, although the stories are short, they help make readers think seriously about their life or something else. The book has much to say about both the large and the small thoughts of life.

In our life, many people may have a mental (心理的) problem. Some people may get over it, but others may not go away easily.
The World Health Organization (WHO) says that about 20 percent of teenagers around the world are having mental problems. It predicts that the number will be much larger years later.
In China, the situation isn’t good, either. About 10 percent of teenagers under 17 have a mental problem.
“These days, students spend most of their time studying and building up relationships with classmates and teachers. With more people, the competition is harder at school,” the WHO said. A study also found that students’ unhappiness came from the Internet. “Online, teenagers often see messages about perfection (完美) and these make them get worried about themselves for not being the best. But they shouldn’t worry about such things at all,” said an expert.
Some doctors also say that teenagers don’t ask for help when they have mental problems. They are afraid that others will laugh at them. And in the UK, over 75 percent of teenagers believe having mental problems is their own problem. A study showed in 2017 that a quarter of teenagers in the UK wouldn’t ask for help if they had a mental problem. “I don’t want others, even the doctors, to know what I’m thinking. So, I may help myself out,” some teenagers said.
“These people may be creating problems for themselves in the future,” the expert said. “My advice for teenagers is, if you feel something is wrong, just ask for help. The earlier you ask, the better you will get.”

A good memory is often seen as something that comes naturally, and a bad memory as something that cannot be changed. People can make their memories better by some skills.
Take an interest. We all remember the things we are interested in and forget the ones that are boring. This explains the reason why students can remember football results but have no idea with dates of their history lessons! Take an active interest in what you want to remember, and focus on it. One most useful way to make yourself more interested in something is to ask questions. The more, the better!
Repeat (重复) things. It is the best way to remember things for a short time. For example, remembering a phone number for a few seconds. Grouping numbers may help you to remember them. For example, the following numbers would be impossible for most of us to remember: 1492178919318483. But look at them in “grouping numbers”, and it becomes much easier: 1492 1789 1931 8483.
Another way to remember something well is visualization (可视化). Draw a picture in your mind, and the stranger the picture is, the better you will remember it! Drawing mind maps is also helpful to remember something well. When you can remember the picture or the mind map, you can remember the most information.
Invent a story. To remember long lists, try inventing a story which includes all the items you want to remember. In experiments (实验), people were asked to remember up to 120 words using this skill. When they were tested afterwards, on average (平均) they could remember ninety percent!
Organize your ideas. If you can organize what you want to know as a whole, you can understand better when you learn more about that subject. Make well-organized notes and be sure things are clear in your mind. If not, ask questions until you understand it!
The skills to 11 people’s memory

Ten years ago, J. B.Gill decided to make a change. He moved from the city to start his own farm. As a member of a pop group, Gill had lived a busy life but the farm gave him a way to relax.
Although farming was new to him, Gill took the challenge and his experiences helped him write his book Ace and the Animal Heroes. The story follows Ace, whose life changes greatly when he moves to the countryside. After trying on a pair of magical wellies (长筒靴), Ace realizes he can speak to the animals, who make up their minds to protect the farm.
Gill cares about wildlife on his farm. As they have no owners, Gill feels like he’s sharing their home. “It’s really interesting to hear what they’re thinking and know where they’re at,” he said.
Gill got his ideas for writing from the animals on his family farm. His children, Ace and Chiara, helped out with his book. Together, Gill’s family made sure that the pictures in the book looked like the animals they had seen on the farm. He said, “All of those have been really great to piece the whole book together.”

Starting from the Han Dynasty, people invented the Chinese pingfeng (folding screen) and made it the traditional Chinese furniture (家具). The word pingfeng means protection from wind, showing its use at the very beginning.
As time passes, it has changed into different sizes with colorful paintings. On screens usually appears a dragon. It’s a symbol of light, growth and life-giving water. It also shows the energy (能量). The peacock, a beautiful bird, can be seen on screens, too. It’s a symbol of long life. Beautiful flowers, which mean much money and good luck, are usually popular pictures on the pingfeng. All the paintings carry people’s beautiful wishes.
Behind the pingfeng lies an interesting story. In the past the unmarried daughter of a rich family couldn’t appear in front of the strange men. When a man came to visit, she might hide completely behind a screen and take a secret (隐秘的) look at him. Her father would communicate with the young man. If the young man gave the daughter and her father satisfaction, she might agree to take him as a husband.
Today the pingfeng gets popular again for its beauty and its typical use as furniture. Acting as a moving wall, it can be the perfect match for modern sofas and walls.

Everyone has got two personalities (性格)—the one that is shown to the world and the other that is real you. When you’re asleep, your sleeping position (睡姿) shows the real you.
If you go to sleep on your back, you’re a very open person. You usually trust people and other people’s new ideas easily get into your mind. You don’t like to make people unhappy, so you often keep what your real think inside. You’re quite shy and you aren’t very confident.
If you sleep on your stomach, you are a rather secretive (不坦率的) person. You worry a lot and you’re always easily becoming sad. You never want to change your ideas, but you think your life is quite satisfying. You usually care about today not tomorrow.
If you sleep on curled up (蜷缩), you are probably a very nervous person. You have a low opinion of yourself and are often afraid of being hurt, so you are very defensive (警觉的). You’re shy and you don’t usually like meeting people.
If you sleep on your side, you have usually got a balanced personality. You know your strengths and weaknesses. You’re usually careful. You have a confident personality. You sometimes feel worried, but you don’t often get unhappy. You always say what you think, even if it makes people angry.

Charles Darwin (1809-1882), known as the Father of Modern Biology, was born in England. When Darwin was young, he didn’t do well at school though he was smart. But he was a good sports player, enjoyed walking and loved learning about nature and collecting sea shells. His father was a doctor and expected Charles to be one, too. So Charles started studying medicine at Edinburgh University in 1825 but gave it up in 1827. Then he studied religion (神学) at Cambridge University from 1828 to 1831, where he spent most time collecting beetles instead of studying.
In 1831, at the age of 22, Darwin went on a journey from England to South America, Australia, South Africa and other countries by ship. He didn’t feel well on the ship but this journey changed his life as he collected many fossils (化石), animals, and plants along the way. The ship finally went back to England safely in 1836. Then he spent the rest of his life studying what he had seen and collected and wrote many books.
His most famous book, On the Origin of Species, came out in 1859 and sold out in one day. He said that species evolve (进化) and change over time. At that time, people’s understanding of the natural world was not good enough. After reading the book, people got to know that some living things can get used to the environment better and this makes it possible for them to better live on. It’s called natural selection (选择). Today, Charles Darwin still encourages new scientists. His spirit goes on, and he’ll always be seen as a great scientist in history.

Stress Before a Test
Many people experience stress before an exam. Actually, a little nervousness can help you perform your best. However, when this stress becomes so excessive (过度的) that it really influences performance on an exam, it is known as test stress.
There are a few causes of test stress.
● Fear of failure. If you care too much about your scores, the pressure car cause test stress.
● Poor testing history. If you have done poorly on tests before, either because you don’t study well enough or because you are so stressed, you can’t remember the answers easily.
●Unpreparedness. If you don’t work hard enough, this can add to your feeling of stress.
Does exam stress influence your grades? If so, I’ll share with you a scientific tip to help overcome it. —Clear your room and your desk.
Have you heard the saying “A cluttered (杂乱的) desk is a sign of a cluttered mind?” It’s scientifically correct.
More clutter around your work space makes it more difficult to be able to focus on preparing for the exam. This is because physical clutter weakens your ability to think. So you need to clear your desk and your room. Do the following to get organized.
● Reduce as much clutter as you can around your work space. Throw away anything that doesn’t need to be there, e. g. photos, snacks.
● Use drawers. Store things away in your drawers. The only things you should have on your desk are the tools and books you need.
● Clean your space. Since you’ve cleared your space, give your desk and room a good clean.
I believe that if you follow my tips, you’ll become a calmer and more successful student.

In China, it’s common to see people on the streets using their fans to beat the heat in summer. However, the traditional Chinese fan is not just a tool for cooling down, but a symbol of traditional Chinese culture.
The history of Chinese fans goes back to the Shang Dynasty (about 1600 B.C~1046 B.C). One of the earliest fans was known as Shanhan. It was a bit like today’s umbrella. It was tied (系) to a carriage (马车) to keep people away from the strong sunshine and rainfall. Later, Shanhan developed into a long-handled fan called Zhangshan (障扇).
In fact, the fan was not used to help people cool down until the Zhou Dynasty. At that time, fans were usually made of birds’ feathers and mainly used by the emperors. Later, bamboo fans and cattail-leaf fans (蒲扇) were invented during the Han Dynasty. Both were most popular among the common people during the Song Dynasty.
Years later, the folding fan was introduced. As this kind of fan could be easily folded and carried, it soon became popular. However, the best thing of a folding fan was the pictures on it. If a famous person painted the fan, it could cost a lot of money. For example, a folding fan painted by Zhang Daqian was sold for $252,000. Qi Baishi and Xu Beihong were also well known.
Throughout history, Chinese fans have stood the test of time. Today, there are more than 500 kinds of fans in China, attracting (吸引) a great number of fan lovers both at home and abroad. However, it’s difficult to carry on our traditional skills of making fans among young people now for many reasons. Luckily, Tag Design made a meaningful try. It developed an app “Folding Fan” which introduces the skills for making traditional folding fans. With the help of technology, these fan-making skills are surely able to stay alive forever.

Until the beginning of July, there has been no rain in northern Italy for over 100 days. Add to that the high temperatures, and the locals get very dry conditions. This is the most serious dry spell (干旱期) for that area in the past 70 years. Because of this situation, the country’s longest river, the Po River is drying up!
This is bad news for several different reasons. The fresh water of the Po provides drinking water for northern Italy. Besides, farmers in this area need the water of the Po to keep their crops (谷物) growing. What’s more, the flowing river water is used to create about half of the hydroelectric power (水力发电) for Italy. Its drying up means that more natural gas (天然气) will be used, which is bad for the environment.
There have been some interesting discoveries from this lack of rain, however. Between Florence and Milan, a long ship sunk (沉没) in 1943 appeared because of the low water levels of the river. Now many tourists and locals come to see this ship. A German tank has also appeared out of water near Mantua. At other places along the river, people can even walk on the sandy river bed. Although this may be interesting, people in Italy and around the world are hoping for the return of rain to refill the Po!
The longest river in Italy is drying up!
The reasons
•Rain hasn’t fallen in northern Italy for a long time.
•The temperatures are 51 than usual.
Bad influences
•People have less drinking water from the Po.
•A lack of (缺乏) rain makes it 52 for crops to grow.
•People will 53 more natural gas, which is bad for the environment.
54
•A long ship sunk in 1943 and a tank from 55 appeared.
•People are even able to walk on the sandy river bed.

Second, nursing home for patients is a good place to start your volunteer activities. You can look after them and make friends with them. In fact, having sick people around you will make you look at situations in a different way, and embrace (拥抱) the beauty and joy of life.
Third, English is widely used. If you are fluent (流利的) in English, you can help those who would like to learn. They can be children, village students, adults, or anyone who wants to learn a new language. As for the places, it can be in an English club or the community service center.

1903—The first fight succeeded.
In 1900, Wilbur Wright said flight was possible for man. After much work he and his brother Orville Wright made this dream come true.
On December 17, 1903, the brothers made the first successful airplane flight on a windy beach at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The brothers’ plane flew 120 feet. Although the flight lasted only 12 seconds, it moved the course of history in a new direction.
1935—Nylon was invented.
In 1928, a new chemical lab was opened to make a kind of man-made materials. Wallace Carothers took part in the team when he was 32 years old.
In 1934, he made fibers (纤维), but the fibers were quite weak. He didn’t give up. After many experiments, he produced the long and strong fibers in 1935. They named the fibers “nylon”. Carothers was very satisfied with his work.
Nylon hit the markets in 1939 , and quickly became a replacement of silk. But it was a pity that he didn’t see the wide use of his invention. He died in April, 1937.
1968—The computer mouse was first shown in public.
As a graduate student, Douglas Engelbart began to imagine ways in which all sorts of information could be on screens.
In 1964, Douglas Engelbart made the first computer mouse. The computer mouse had a wooden shell with two metal wheels.
In 1968, the first computer mouse appeared in public. It was named “mouse” because a tail came out at the end. In later years, the computer mouse became more and more important.
Douglas Engelbart changed the way that computers worked.
Now computer mice are becoming increasingly useful. And there are many different shapes of computer mice in the world.

Happiness is not the result of jumping from one joy to the next, researchers find that achieving happiness requires us to pass through the pain and discomfort. Social relationships, even your neighbors—all influence how happy you are
There are some misunderstandings of happiness. People often believe that happiness will be achieved once they reach a certain goal, such as finding a perfect partner or getting a good job. However, people will be used to their new relationship or wealth, return to a basic level of happiness, and look for the next goal.
There are also many people who think they must be happier if they can earn more money. However, research shows that a person who can make money of$150, 000a year will not necessarily be as happy as a person making less money
Happy people show certain signs. They always find joy in the simple pleasures of life—petting a dog, siting under a tee, and enjoying a cup of tea. Besides, happy people often have good relationships with others, because they are often grateful to and happy for other people. A happy person is also ready to learn new skill and open to new things.
Studies have found hat the benefits of happiness are great. First of all, being happy helps people keep healthy, not only physical but also mentally. What’s more, happy people are usually more popular in a much bigger social circle. Therefore, it is not hard to understand that happy people are often more successful in their life.

根据短文内容,完成图表中所缺信息。

阅读下面短文,完成表格内容,每空不超过3个词。

•Rain hasn’t fallen in northern Italy for a long time.
