Sia Godika was 13 when she noticed the barefoot children of construction workers at a building site near her house in the upscale Koramangala district of Bangalore, India.
“They were just walking around that building site with their feet bare, hard, dirty and bleeding, as though it was an everyday practice for them,” reflects Sia, now 17. And it was in that moment that Sia realised the troubling contrast to her own privilege.
She went back home, looked at her tender feet and opened her wardrobe doors, seeing shoes — many of which hadn’t been worn for months or years—piled up high. She headed to her mother’s wardrobe next, literally dusting off cobwebs from some shoes. Then she rushed to give them all away to the same children she saw at the building site.
Later that year, with the help of her parents and community volunteers, Sia founded Sole Warriors, a charity dedicated to providing footwear to those in need, epitomised by its motto: “Donate a sole, save a soul.”
The idea, which started as a dinner conversation with her parents, quickly grew. After she spread the word with posters and social media, enquiries from people who wanted to help came flooding in. Now in its fifth year, the organisation runs distribution drives in which Sole Warriors collects used footwear, refurbishes (翻新) it and donates the finished products to people in need.
That need, says Sia, is endless. In a world where the poorest half of the population owns just two per cent of the wealth, an estimated 300 million people can’t afford footwear. Of the nearly 24 billion shoes made every year, shockingly more than 90 per cent end up in landfills.
In its first distribution drive, Sole Warriors collected and gave out 700 pairs of shoes. Today that number stands at around 28,000 across four countries, including the United States, China and Liberia, thanks to the hard work of a core team of about 80 volunteers.
But the organisation’s growth wasn’t without its challenges. When it came to looking for collaborators, such as a company that would do the refurbishments free of charge, Sia faced one obstacle after another before finding a partner in India’s Pressto Cobbler.
In recognition of her impact, in 2021 Sia was given the Diana Award, one of the most prestigious (声誉高的) honours a young person can receive for social action or humanitarian work. But her work isn’t done. “Our goal has always been to touch a million feet,” she says.
1.__________ inspired Sia to donate shoes to the children at the building site.
A.Her privilege to live in an upscale community B.Her parents’ and community volunteers’ help
C.The sight of children without wearing shoes D.The piles of shoes in her parent’wardrobes
2.The underlined word “epitomized” in para.4 can be replaced with _________.
A.symbolized B.nicknamed C.sustained D.founded
3.What can be inferred about Sia’s charitable cause?
A.Sia was awarded Diana Award for her cause at 20.
B.Sia’s project recycles 90% of used shoes in landfills.
C.Sia conquered many challenges posed by Pressto Cobbler.
D.Sia is ambitious to expand her project by donating more shoes.
4.Which of the following is probably the best title of the text?
A.Miseries at Indian Building Site B.Walking in Someone else’s Shoes
C.Favourite for the Diana Award D.Mission Achieved by Perseverance
【答案】1.C 2.A 3.D 4.B
根据第二段““They were just walking around that building site with their feet bare, hard, dirty and bleeding, as though it was an everyday practice for them,” reflects Sia, now 17. And it was in that moment that Sia realised the troubling contrast to her own privilege. (现年17岁的希雅回忆说:“他们光着脚在建筑工地走来走去,脚又硬又脏,还流着血,就好像这是他们每天都要做的事情。”就在那一刻,西娅意识到这与她自己的特权形成了令人不安的对比)”和第三段中“Then she rushed to give them all away to the same children she saw at the building site. (然后她赶紧把它们都送给了她在建筑工地看到的孩子们)”可知,看到孩子们没有穿鞋的情景,Sia决定将鞋子捐赠给建筑现场的孩子们。故选C项。
2.词句猜测题。根据画线词的上文“Later that year, with the help of her parents and community volunteers, Sia founded Sole Warriors, a charity dedicated to providing footwear to those in need (那年晚些时候,在父母和社区志愿者的帮助下,Sia成立了Sole Warriors慈善机构,致力于为有需要的人提供鞋子)”和下文“its motto: “Donate a sole, save a soul.” (它的座右铭是:“捐赠一只鞋底,拯救一个灵魂。”)”可推知,这句座右铭应该是传达了该慈善机构致力于要做的事情,即体现或象征了这件事,画线词意思应该是“体现,象征”,可被symbolized替换。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“But her work isn’t done. “Our goal has always been to touch a million feet,” she says. (但她的工作还没有完成。她说:“我们的目标一直是达到100只脚。”)”可推知,Sia雄心勃勃地希望通过捐赠更多的鞋子来扩大她的慈善事业。故选D项。
4.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第四段中“Later that year, with the help of her parents and community volunteers, Sia founded Sole Warriors, a charity dedicated to providing footwear to those in need (那年晚些时候,在父母和社区志愿者的帮助下,希雅成立了Sole Warriors慈善机构,致力于为有需要的人提供鞋子)”可知,文章讲述了女孩Sia的善行,她在13岁时看见建筑工人的孩子们没有鞋子穿,之后在父母和社区志愿者的帮助下成立了慈善组织Sole Warriors,致力于为有需要的人提供鞋子。

Just the Ticket
Shetara Sims had weathered some tough years. In 2012, her eldest daughter was murdered during an argument in Kansas City, Missouri. Last year, the single mother lost her job in the recession She had only $7 in her pocket as she headed into the grocery store one day last July with her 12-year-old daughter, Rakiya Edmondson.
And then Lady Luck finally cut Sims some slack. She and her daughter found a dollar bill in the parking lot. Maybe this was their day, they told each other. So they bought a lottery ticket (彩票) --and won $100.
But before they could spend their unexpected gain, Rakiya had an idea. The news in Kansas City that week had been filled with stories about a police officer, Tyler Moss, who had been shot in the head in the line of duty. He was in critical condition. Rakiya and her mother had never forgotten how kind the police had been after their own family member was killed. “The detectives were really there for us,” Sims says. “They came to see my kids. They were fathers, therapists. They were everything.” Rakiya wanted to give their lottery winning to Officer Moss’s family. Her mom readily agreed.
On July 10, Sims called the police and made an anonymous (匿名的) donation. Moved by her generous expression of thanks, the officers did what they do best --they tracked Sims down. When she explained the family’s motivation, the officers could hardly believe it. “With her current financial hardship, we encouraged her to keep the money,” the department later explained. “She refused, saying the officer’s family needed it and police needed to know they were supported.”
By then, that feeling of support was mutual. The police set up a GoFundMe page for Sims, whom they called “The Woman with the Heart of Gold.” Their goal was $10,000. As of January 11, they had raised $165,405. Even better: Officer Moss, who had a 1 percent chance of survival, is out of the hospital and recovering.
5.Which of the following is NOT one of the hardships Shetara Sims went through?
A.Having to bring up children all by herself. B.Losing a lot of money buying lottery tickets.
C.Losing her job during the economic decline. D.Her eldest daughter being killed in an argument.
6.The underlined phrase “cut Sims some slack” is closest in meaning to _________.
A.gave Sims a break B.criticized Sims sharply
C.ignored Sims completely D.conducted a test on Sims
7.Why was Sims called “The Woman with the Heart of Gold”?
A.She supported Moss’s family with the money raised on GoFundMe.
B.She wrote an anonymous letter to express her gratitude to Officer Moss.
C.She donated all the lottery winning despite her own financial hardships.
D.She forgave the murderer and encouraged Rakiya to embrace a new life.
8.Which of the following statement is TRUE?
A.The police tracked Sims down secretly and returned the money to her.
B.The police launched a fundraising campaign for Sims among policeman.
C.Officer Moss got injured when arresting the man who killed Sims' daughter.
D.Officer Moss’s survival was truly a miracle, given his slim chances.
【答案】5.B 6.A 7.C 8.D
根据第一段“Shetara Sims had weathered some tough years. In 2012, her eldest daughter was murdered during an argument in Kansas City, Missouri. Last year, the single mother lost her job in the recession
根据第一段“Shetara Sims had weathered some tough years. In 2012, her eldest daughter was murdered during an argument in Kansas City, Missouri. Last year, the single mother lost her job in the recession (经济衰退). She had only $7 in her pocket as she headed into the grocery store one day last July with her 12-year-old daughter, Rakiya Edmondson.(Shetara Sims经历了一些艰难的岁月。2012年,她的大女儿在密苏里州堪萨斯城的一次争吵中被谋杀。去年,这位单亲妈妈在经济衰退中失去了工作。去年7月的一天,当她和12岁的女儿Rakiya Edmondson走进杂货店时,口袋里只有7美元)”以及第二段“She and her daughter found a dollar bill in the parking lot. Maybe this was their day, they told each other. So they bought a lottery ticket --and won $100.(她和女儿在停车场发现了一张一美元的钞票。也许这是她们的一天,她们告诉对方。于是她们买了一张彩票,中了100美元)”可知,在面临许多困难时,这对母女捡到一美元,买彩票之后中了100美元,可推知幸运女神给了Shetara Sims一个喘息的机会,划线句子表示“让Shetara Sims休息一下”。故选A项。
根据第三段““With her current financial hardship, we encouraged her to keep the money,” the department later explained. “She refused, saying the officer’s family needed it and police needed to know they were supported.”(“鉴于她目前的经济困难,我们鼓励她保留这笔钱,”该部门后来解释道。“她拒绝了,说警察的家人需要,警察需要知道他们得到了支持。”)”以及第四段“By then, that feeling of support was mutual. The police set up a GoFundMe page for Sims, whom they called “The Woman with the Heart of Gold.”(到那时,这种支持感是相互的。警方为Sims建立了一个GoFundMe页面,他们称她为“有黄金之心的女人”)”可知,Sims被称为“有黄金之心的女人”,这是因为Sims在自己经济困难的时候,仍然捐赠了彩票中奖的钱。故选C项。
8.细节理解题。根据第四段“Even better: Officer Moss, who had a 1 percent chance of survival, is out of the hospital and recovering.(更好的是:有1%的生还几率的Moss警官现在已经出院,正在康复中)”可知,Moss警官的生还几率渺茫,能够生还真是一个奇迹。故选D项。

In my living room, there is a plaque (匾) that advises me to “Bloom where you are planted.” It reminds me of Dorothy. I got to know Dorothy in the early 1980s, when I was teaching Early Childhood Development through a program with Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. The job responsibilities required occasional visits to the classroom of each teacher in the program. Dorothy stands out in my memory as one who “bloomed” in her remote area.
Dorothy taught in a school in Harlan County, Kentucky, Appalachian Mountain area. To get to her school from the town of Harlan, I followed a road winding around the mountain. In the eight-mile journey, I crossed the same railroad track five times, giving the possibility of getting caught by the same train five times. Rather than feeling excited by this drive through the mountains, I found it depressing. The poverty level was shocking and the small shabby houses gave me the greatest feeling of hopelessness.
From the moment of my arrival at the little school, all gloom (忧郁) disappeared. Upon arriving at Dorothy’s classroom, I was greeted with smiling faces and treated like a queen. The children had been prepared to show me their latest projects. Dorothy told me with a big smile that they were serving poke greens salad and cornbread for “dinner” (lunch). In case you don’t know, poke greens are a weed-type plant that grows wild, especially on poor ground.
Dorothy never ran out of reports of exciting activities of her students. Her enthusiasm never cooled down. When it came time to sit for the testing and interviewing required to receive he Child Development Associate Certification, Dorothy was ready. She came to the assessment and passed in all areas. Afterward, she invited me to the one-and-only steak house in the area celebrate her victory, as if she had received her Ph.D.degree. After the meal, she placed a little box containing an old pen in my hand. She said it was a family heirloom (传家宝), but to me it a treasured symbol of appreciation and pride that cannot be matched with things.

C.She passed the required assessment.
D.She received her Ph. D.degree.
12.What does the author mainly intend to tell us?
A.Whatever you do, you must do it carefully.

During my first decade in prison, I busied myself with exercising and hanging out in the big yard. I hardly grew as a person. It wasn’t until I began college in prison in my 30s that I started to realize my full potential.
Through my journey in college, I became a keen reader and writer, striving to escape prison life by expanding my mind beyond the toxic (有毒的) environments I’d been confined to. I started studying feminism and restorative justice. One concept that really hit home for me was toxic masculinity I come from an abusive home and a neighborhood consumed by gangs, drugs and gun violence. I wanted to understand better why I had used violence to solve my problems.
I have found, however, that strangers stand between me and many of the books I want to read.
Books, like everything an imprisoned person receives— personal mail, emails, photos, news and education materials — are evaluated by prison officials and rejected or shared with us. Corrections departments typically claim they ban books that contain sexual content, racial hatred or depictions of violence, criminal activity, anti-authority attitudes or escape. In practice, PEN America wrote in a 2019 report on prison book restriction policies, the restrictions “have been wide-ranging, from perverse to absurd to constitutionally troubling, with bans being applied in ways that are against logic.”
In Texas, books by Alice Walker, Pablo Neruda and even the former senator Bob Dole have been banned. Throughout the country, prison officials have rejected or tried to ban books about biology (too much nakedness in the anatomical drawings), the Holocaust (some of the victims were pictured naked), sketching, dragons and even the moon (it could “present risks of escape,” according to one New York prison). At one point, Colorado prison officials blocked a prisoner from reading two of President Barack Obama’s memoirs because they were “potentially harmful to national security,” although they later reversed that decision.
Claiming such bans are necessary for the safety and security of prisons seems ridiculous. If anything, many banned books could contribute to a safer environment in prisons and in the societies imprisoned individuals are released into. Practically every author I have encountered while in prison, from Don Miguel Ruiz to Angela Y. Davis, has played a role in my efforts to grow and become a better person— someone who can live in society by adding to it, as opposed to taking from it.
Without college and without access to books and materials that expanded my mind beyond the razor wire (钢丝网) and towering concrete walls, I might still be wasting my time on the yard. My worldview would still be dictated by toxic masculinity and the violence and harm that surround it. That’s not who I want to be when I leave this prison. It’s not who I want to see sent back into society.
13.Why did the author turn to violence when he was young?
A.Because his parents and neighbours told him to do so.
B.Because he had read a lot of books about hatred and violence.
C.Because he had been bullied a lot by peers during his childhood.
D.Because the environment where he grew up was filled with violence.
14.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the reason why prisons try to ban some books?
A.Some books may post threats to national security.
B.Some books may lead to extreme religious behaviour.
C.Some pictures may contain sexually inappropriate content.
D.Some books may potentially encourage prisoners to escape.
15.According to the author, what benefits can reading books offer in prisons?
①to broaden the prisoners’ horizon ②to prevent prisoners from escaping
③to encourage prisoners to contribute to society ④to reduce violent behaviour
A.①②③ B.①③④ C.①②④ D.②③④
16.What does the author most want to express through the article?
A.Reading books is important for a teenager’s growth.
B.Toxic masculinity is harmful to a person’s growth.
C.It is unreasonable for authorities to restrict reading for prisoners.
D.It’s never too late to realize one’s academic potential even in prison.
根据第二段“I come from an abusive home and a neighborhood consumed by gangs, drugs and gun violence. I wanted to understand better why I had used violence to solve my problems.(我来自一个充满暴力的家庭,一个充斥着帮派、毒品和枪支暴力的社区。我想更好地理解为什么我用暴力来解决我的问题)”可知,作者年轻时会诉诸暴力是因为他成长的环境充满了暴力。故选D。
14.细节理解题。根据第四段“Corrections departments typically claim they ban books that contain sexual content, racial hatred or depictions of violence, criminal activity, anti-authority attitudes or escape.(惩教部门通常声称,他们禁止含有性内容、种族仇恨或描述暴力、犯罪活动、反权威态度或逃跑的书籍)”以及第五段“Throughout the country, prison officials have rejected or tried to ban books about biology (too much nakedness in the anatomical drawings), the Holocaust (some of the victims were pictured naked), sketching, dragons and even the moon (it could “present risks of escape,” according to one New York prison). At one point, Colorado prison officials blocked a prisoner from reading two of President Barack Obama’s memoirs because they were “potentially harmful to national security,” although they later reversed that decision.(在全国范围内,监狱官员已经拒绝或试图禁止有关生物学(解剖图中有太多裸体)、大屠杀(一些受害者被裸体拍摄)、素描、龙甚至月亮的书籍(根据纽约一家监狱的说法,这可能“带来逃跑的风险”)。科罗拉多州监狱官员曾一度禁止一名囚犯阅读Barack Obama总统的两本回忆录,因为它们“可能危害国家安全”,不过后来他们撤销了这一决定)”可知,B选项“有些书可能会导致极端的宗教行为”不是监狱试图禁书的原因。故选B。
15.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Practically every author I have encountered while in prison, from Don Miguel Ruiz to Angela Y. Davis, has played a role in my efforts to grow and become a better person— someone who can live in society by adding to it, as opposed to taking from it.(实际上,我在狱中遇到的每一位作家,从Don Miguel Ruiz到Angela Y. Davis,都在我成长的过程中发挥了作用,帮助我成为一个更好的人——一个能在社会中生存的人,而不是从社会中吸取东西)”以及最后一段“Without college and without access to books and materials that expanded my mind beyond the razor wire (钢丝网) and towering concrete walls, I might still be wasting my time on the yard. My worldview would still be dictated by toxic masculinity and the violence and harm that surround it. (如果没有大学,没有书本和资料,我的思维无法超越铁丝网和高耸的混凝土墙,我可能还在院子里浪费时间。我的世界观仍然会被有毒的男子气概以及围绕它的暴力和伤害所左右)”可知,在监狱里读书的好处有拓宽囚犯的视野、鼓励犯人为社会做贡献以及减少暴力行为。故选B。
16.推理判断题。根据第一段“During my first decade in prison, I busied myself with exercising and hanging out in the big yard. I hardly grew as a person. It wasn’t until I began college in prison in my 30s that I started to realize my full potential.(在我入狱的头十年里,我忙于锻炼和在大院子里闲逛。我几乎没有成长。直到我30多岁在监狱里开始上大学,我才开始意识到自己的全部潜力)”以及最后一段“Without college and without access to books and materials that expanded my mind beyond the razor wire (钢丝网) and towering concrete walls, I might still be wasting my time on the yard. My worldview would still be dictated by toxic masculinity and the violence and harm that surround it. That’s not who I want to be when I leave this prison. It’s not who I want to see sent back into society.(如果没有大学,没有书本和资料,我的思维无法超越铁丝网和高耸的混凝土墙,我可能还在院子里浪费时间。我的世界观仍然会被有毒的男子气概以及围绕它的暴力和伤害所左右。我离开监狱时可不想变成那样。我不想看到这样的人被送回社会)”可推知,作者最想通过文章表达的是即使在监狱里,发挥学术潜力(努力学习文化知识)也永远不会太晚。故选D。

As plastic waste increases rapidly around the world, an essential question remains unanswered: What harm, if any, does it cause to human health?
A few years ago, as microplastics began turning up in the organs of fish and shellfish, the concern was focused on the safety of seafood. Shellfish were a particular worry, because in their case, unlike fish, we eat the entire animal — stomach, microplastics and all. In 2017, Belgian scientists announced that seafood lovers could consume up to 11,000 plastic particles (粒子) a year by eating mussels (贻贝), a favorite dish in that country.
By then, however, scientists already understood that plastics continuously fragment small pieces in the environment, tearing over time into fibers even smaller than a strand of human hair — particles are so small that they easily fly in the air. A team at the U.K.’s University of Plymouth decided to compare the threat from eating polluted wild mussels in Scotland to that of breathing air in a typical home. Their conclusion: People will take in more plastic by breathing in or taking tiny, invisible plastic fibers floating in the air around them—fibers from their own clothes, carpets, and soft covering on furniture — than they will by eating the mussels.
So, it wasn’t much of a surprise when, in 2022, scientists from the Netherlands and the U.K, announced they had found tiny plastic particles in living humans, in two places where they hadn’t been seen before: deep inside the lungs of surgical patients, and in the blood of unknown donors. Neither of the two studies answered the question of possible harm. But together they signaled a shift in the focus of concern about plastics toward the cloud of dust particles in the air, some of them are so small that they can get into deep inside the body and even inside cells, in ways that larger microplastics can’t.
Dick Vethaak, a professor of ecotoxicology (生态毒理学), doesn’t consider the results alarming, exactly—“but, yes, we should be concerned. Plastics should not be in your blood.” “We live in a multi-particle world,” he adds, referring to the dust, pollen (花粉), and smog that humans also breathe in every day. “The trick is to figure out how much plastics contribute to that particle burden and what does that mean.”
17.What does the word “fragment” in para. 3 probably mean?
A.break into B.take in C.pick out D.make up
18.The study done by a team at the U K.’s University of Plymouth shows that ________.
A.microplastics from things in our daily life ant more poisonous
B.people eating polluted mussels are more likely to get diseases
C.invisible plastic fibers are more harmful to the environment
D.the influence of microplastics in mussels is less than thought
19.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A.microplastics in polluted wild mussels can cause serious diseases
B.there’s no need to worry about the plastics found in human blood
C.we can avoid breathing particles by figuring out particle burden
D.more attention should be paid to the dust particles than plastics
20.Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A.Are Microplastics Harmful to Us?
B.Should Microplastics be in Our Blood?
C.Can Microplastics Get into Our Bodies?
D.Do We Know Anything about Microplastics?
【答案】17.A 18.D 19.D 20.A
根据黑体字所在句“By then, however, scientists already understood that plastics continuously fragment small pieces in the environment, tearing over time into fibers even smaller than a strand of human hair — particles are so small that they easily fly in the air. ”(然而,到那时,科学家们已经明白,塑料在环境中不断地分解成小块,随着时间的推移,它们被撕裂成比一缕头发还小的纤维——这些颗粒非常小,很容易在空气中飞行。)可知,塑料最终会成为非常小的碎片颗粒;动词短语break into pieces表示“成为碎片”,符合语意。故选A。
根据第三段“Their conclusion: People will take in more plastic by breathing in or taking tiny, invisible plastic fibers floating in the air around them—fibers from their own clothes, carpets, and soft covering on furniture — than they will by eating the mussels.”(他们的结论是:人们会通过呼吸或吸入漂浮在周围空气中的微小的、看不见的塑料纤维——来自他们自己的衣服、地毯和家具上柔软覆盖物的纤维——来摄入比吃贻贝更多的塑料。)
根据第四段“But together they signaled a shift in the focus of concern about plastics toward the cloud of dust particles in the air, some of them are so small that they can get into deep inside the body and even inside cells, in ways that larger microplastics can’t.”(但它们共同标志着人们对塑料的关注焦点转向了空气中的尘埃颗粒云,其中一些尘埃颗粒非常小,可以进入人体深处,甚至进入细胞内,这是较大的微塑料无法做到的。)

Dansh Boyd, who holds positions at Microsoft Research, New York University, and Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society, has a pointed message for parents: Most everything we think we know about the way our kids are using the Internet is wrong. Boyd's new book, it's Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens, makes the case that the Internet isn't nearly as scary or damaging to young people as many moms and dads believe. As the mother of a 16-yaer-old, I found most of it fascinating. Here are two of my biggest takeaways:
Technology is not turning our teens into social misfits.
Although the image persists that young people would rather test than talk, and prefer connecting of Facebook than hanging out in person, Boyd says this isn't true. "Most of the teens that I met ... were desperate for the opportunity to leave their homes to gather with friends," she writes.
The trouble is that in many communities, young people have less freedom than they once did because they are so over scheduled and because parents are worried about their safety. "The era of being able to run around after school as long as you are home before dark is long over." Boyd notes.
To make up for this lost freedom, teens have turned to their computers. "The success of social media must be understood partly in relation to this shrinking social landscape." Boyd explains. Facebook, Twitter. Instagram, Snapchat, and other sites "are not only new public spaces: they are in many cases the only 'public' spaces in which teens can easily communicate with large groups of their peers."
Adolescents aren't as Internet savvy as we like to think.
Although teens have been called "digital natives" for having grown up practically glued to their computers and smart-phones, they still remain simple in many ways about what they find online. After all, they're just kids.
"Many of today's teens are indeed deeply engaged with social media ... but this does not mean that they have the knowledge or skills to make the most of their online experiences," Boyd writes. "The so-called 'digital natives,' far from being useful, is often a distraction to understanding the challenges that youth face in the networked world."
One area in which young people need help is in learning to distinguish between valid and misleading sources of information. "Teens may make their own media or share content online," Boyd observes, "but this does not mean that they inherently have the knowledge or perspective to critically examine what they consume."
Yet many teachers, librarians, and, yes, parents do. "Even those who are afraid of technology," Boyd says, "can offer valuable critical perspective."
As a mom or dad, the most important thing for your kid to plug into is your hard-earned wisdom.
21.Danah Boyd's new book mainly talks about ________.
A.the correct and wise use of the Internet for young people
B.teens' real social lives online and advice for parents
C.measures parents can take to deal with the damaging Internet
D.fascinating takeaways for a mother of a 16-year-old
22.According to Boyd, why are teens nowadays easily considered social misfits?
A.Because they seem to prefer to communicate through social networks.
B.Because they are too over scheduled to hang out with friends in person.
C.Because parents require them to stay at home more for safety reasons.
D.Because social networks offer them convenience of communication
23.An "Internet savvy" person is one who ________.
A.tends to be cheated over the Internet all the time
B.is completely absorbed in social networks all the time
C.knows how to fully and wisely use the Internet
D.has the ability to distinguish right from wrong
24.Boyd may suggest that parents should ________.
A.provide kids with more chances to leave homes and gather with friends
B.build more public places for kids to communicate with their peers
C.provide kids with knowledge and skills to help them to digital natives
D.filter out the misleading sources of information online for their kids
【答案】21.B 22.A 23.C 24.C
Dansh Boyd, who holds positions at Microsoft Research, New York University, and Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society, has a pointed message for parents: Most everything we think we know about the way our kids are using the Internet is wrong. Boyd's new book, it's Complicated: The Social Lives of Networked Teens, makes the case that the Internet isn't nearly as scary or damaging to young people as many moms and dads believe. As a mom or dad, the most important thing for your kid to plug into is your hard-earned wisdom.
To make up for this lost freedom, teens have turned to their computers. “The success of social media must be understood partly in relation to this shrinking social landscape.” Boyd explains. 故选A项。
根据第六段中“Many of today’s teens are indeed deeply engaged with social media ... but this does not mean that they have the knowledge or skills to make the most of their online experiences," Boyd writes.” The so-called ‘digital natives,’ far from being useful, is often a distraction to understanding the challenges that youth face in the networked world.” “如今的许多青少年确实深深地沉迷于社交媒体…但这并不意味着他们有知识或技能来充分利用他们的在线体验,” Boyd写道。“所谓的‘数字原生代’远远不是有用的,他们常常分散人们对年轻人在网络世界中面临的挑战的理解。”以及第七段中“Teens may make their own media or share content online,” Boyd observes, “but this does not mean that they inherently have the knowledge or perspective to critically examine what they consume.”说明了青少年并不是天生就有知识或观点来批判性地检查他们所消费的东西。这些都说明了本部分标题:青少年并不像我们想象的那样精通网络。可知,一个“互联网通”是一个知道如何充分和明智地使用互联网的人。故选C项。
24.推理判断题。根据倒数第三段中One area in which young people need help is in learning to distinguish between valid and misleading sources of information. Yet many teachers, librarians, and, yes, parents do. “Even those who are afraid of technology,” Boyd says, “can offer valuable critical perspective.” As a mom or dad, the most important thing for your kid to plug into is your hard-earned wisdom.

As we prepare learners with the skills needed for the 21st century, there is a greater desire to further integrate technology into our classrooms. Whether it’s a K-12 or college classroom, it’s rare to find an environment that does not integrate technology in some form or another. In some cases, online learning has replaced the physical classroom altogether. As educators, we owe it to ourselves and our students to use these benefits. However, while technology offers significant advantages, simply integrating it as an alternative source of delivery or as another means for students to demonstrate their comprehension is not an effective practice.
We must remind ourselves that any form of learning technology should also be guided. These resources are just instruments and require high-quality guided practice from instructors. These instruments, combined with guidance, can afford good instruction, practice and motivation. While technology can positively impact learning outcomes, it may be even more effective for some students if it’s instructor-led and integrated into a well-designed curriculum(课程).
Technology is rapidly changing the educational environment and challenging students to adapt accordingly. It can frustrate students of different generations struggling to learn how to use a learning platform in addition to picking up the actual subject. Some may wonder, “Why should I waste time learning how to create a podcast(播客) when I could simply write the paper?”
It’s a reasonable question. We must not assume students who were raised using technology are always comfortable learning with these tools. A study found that because of tools some students may not have experience using, they may need more direction on how to apply these tools. Students may struggle if an instructor neglects to teach the conceptual basis of the tools. Technology may mean little without appropriate objectives and goals for its use, structures for its application, and trained deliverers.
Educators are also tasked with providing students the skills they need to flourish in a highly competitive and technologically-based workplace. Many of the skills obtained through online classes are valuable professional skills. Students taught how to use multiple learning technologies effectively have a competitive advantage over those who are simply using technology as a method of delivery in the online classroom. Regardless of the subjects we teach, integrating technology gives our students the opportunity to not only learn the content, but also to develop skills useful beyond our classrooms. Technology, when integrated and balanced appropriately with the curriculum and with student needs, can make us more effective as educators.
25.What is important to the learning technology?
A.Instruction and revision. B.Comprehension and application.
C.Guidance and arrangements. D.Diversity and flexibility.
26.According to the passage, what should an educator do?
A.Arrange online assignment for students.
B.Help students master online technology.
C.Prepare students with rules in the workplace.
D.Notify students of the value of the learning tool.
27.What’s the author’s attitude toward learning technology?
A.Critical. B.Unconcerned.
C.Wait-and-see. D.Approving.
28.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Does Technology Boost Educational Effectiveness?
B.Is the Learning Technology a Tool or an Opportunity?
C.Can Technology Put an End to Traditional Classrooms?
D.Does the Learning Skill Outweigh the Learning Content?
【答案】25.C 26.B 27.D 28.A
根据第二段的第一句和最后一句“We must remind ourselves that any form of learning technology should also be guided.”“While technology can positively impact learning outcomes, it may be even more effective for some students if it’s instructor-led and integrated into a well-designed curriculum(课程).”
根据最后一段最后两句“Regardless of the subjects we teach, integrating technology gives our students the opportunity to not only learn the content, but also to develop skills useful beyond our classrooms. Technology, when integrated and balanced appropriately with the curriculum and with student needs, can make us more effective as educators.”
从全文最后一句“Technology, when integrated and balanced appropriately with the curriculum and with student needs, can make us more effective as educators.”

The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) reached milestone agreements to pay members of its men’s and women’s teams equally, making the American national governing body the first in the sport to promise both sexes matching money. The agreement comes after years of legal fights and heated bargaining.
The federation has been in difficult negotiations for years with the unions of the women’s national team and the men’s national team. On May 18, it announced separate collective bargaining agreements (CBAs), which are legal contracts between the federation and the soccer players’ unions. The contracts will last through 2028.
The deals grew partly out of a push by players on the more successful women’s team, such as stars Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe. They were at the forefront of the gender equity fight, demanding that women and men soccer players get paid the same.
“I feel a lot of pride for the girls who are going to see this growing up and recognize their value rather than having to fight for it. However, my dad always told me that you don’t get rewarded for doing what you’re supposed to do—and paying men and women equally is what you’re supposed to do, ” U.S. forward Margaret Purce said. “So I’m not giving out any gold stars, but I’m grateful for this accomplishment and for all the people who came together to make it so.”
Six years ago, five of women’s soccer’s most famous players, including Rapinoe and Morgan, filed a legal complaint against the federation for gender discrimination. They argued that men soccer players made far more money and got much better treatment from the federation. This was against the law, they contended. Twenty-eight women players then followed up three years ago with a gender discrimination lawsuit against the federation. They asked a U.S. court to force the federation to stop treating women unfairly.
Perhaps the biggest sticking point in the negotiations was World Cup prize money paid out by FIFA, the governing body of international soccer. While the U.S, women have been hugely successful internationally, differences in FIFA prize money meant the women took home far less than the men. American women received a $110, 000 bonus for winning the 2019 World Cup. The U.S. men would have received $407, 000 if they had won in 2018.
The unions have agreed to pool FIFA’s payments to them for men’s and women’s World Cup tournaments for 2022, 2023, 2026 and 2027. This means they will combine the total money into one pot, then each player will get matching game appearance fees. The USSF said it is the first federation in the world to pool prize money in this manner.
“I’m proud of you for never giving up and I commend U.S. Soccer for agreeing to do the right thing, ” President Joe Biden tweeted. “Let’s keep up the fight until we close the gender pay gap in every industry.”
The women ended their 6-year-long lawsuit over equal pay in February in a deal calling for the USSF to pay $24 million.
As part of the settlement, players will split $22 million, about one-third of what they had sought in damages. The USSF also agreed to establish a fund with $2 million to benefit the players in their post-soccer careers and charitable efforts aimed at the growth of the sport for women.
29.The underlined word “pool” in paragraph 7 most probably means ________.
A.reject B.increase C.collect D.reduce
30.Which statement BEST represents Margaret Purce’s attitude toward winning the legal battle for equal pay in the article?
A.She does not want to overly praise the USSF for doing what is right.
B.She does not think FIFA agreed to pay nearly enough in World Cup bonuses.
C.She is concerned about the long-term sustainability of the agreement.
D.She is hopeful that soccer fans will now have more respect for the women’s team.
31.Why did the author conclude the article with information about the $2 million fund?
A.to explain the difference between what was asked for and what was achieved in the settlement
B.to explain how the women’s soccer team convinced the USSF to agree to the settlement
C.to explain how other aspects of the settlement aim to strengthen the sport overall
D.to explain why soccer coaches will also be able to benefit from the settlement
32.Which of the following statement BEST summarizes the author’s main argument?
A.FIFA’s bonuses for the U.S. women’s team are still not enough to ensure that women soccer players are equally paid.
B.It is unfair that the U.S. women’s soccer team has been paid less than the U.S. men’s soccer team when the women’s team has been enormously successful.
C.The U.S. women’s soccer team’s fight for equal pay would have been won much more quickly if more of the players and fans had actively supported the cause.
D.The USSF should provide significant back pay to the U.S. women’s soccer team players to make up for years of unfairly underpaying them for their work.

根据第七段中“ This means they will combine the total money into one pot, then each player will get matching game appearance fees.(这意味着他们将把所有的钱放到一个罐子里,然后每个玩家将获得匹配的比赛出场费)”可知,他们要把钱全部放在一起,首先要先募集所有钱,所以pool意为“募集”之意。故选C项。
根据第四段中““I feel a lot of pride for the girls who are going to see this growing up and recognize their value rather than having to fight for it. However, my dad always told me that you don’t get rewarded for doing what you’re supposed to do—and paying men and women equally is what you’re supposed to do, ” U.S. forward Margaret Purce said. “So I’m not giving out any gold stars, but I’m grateful for this accomplishment and for all the people who came together to make it so.”(“美国前锋玛格丽特·珀斯(MargaretPurce)说:“我为女孩们感到非常自豪,她们将看到自己的成长,认识到自己的价值。然而,我父亲总是告诉我,做自己应该做的事并不会得到回报,而给男人和女人平等的报酬才是你应该做的。”。“因此,我不会颁发任何金星,但我对这一成就以及所有聚集在一起实现这一成就的人表示感谢。”)”可知她不会授予任何金星意为不想过分赞扬USSF做了正确的事情。故选A项。
根据最后一段“ The USSF also agreed to establish a fund with $2 million to benefit the players in their post-soccer careers and charitable efforts aimed at the growth of the sport for women.(USSF还同意设立一个200万美元的基金,帮助足球运动员在退役后的职业生涯中受益,并开展旨在促进女性足球运动发展的慈善活动)”可知作者用200万美元基金的信息来总结这篇文章是为了解释解决方案的其他方面如何旨在全面加强体育运动。故选C项。
根据第五段中“ They argued that men soccer players made far more money and got much better treatment from the federation. This was against the law, they contended. Twenty-eight women players then followed up three years ago with a gender discrimination lawsuit against the federation. They asked a U.S. court to force the federation to stop treating women unfairly.(他们认为,男性足球运动员赚得更多,从足协那里得到了更好的待遇。他们认为这是违法的。三年前,28名女球员随后对联合会提起了性别歧视诉讼。他们要求美国法院迫使该联合会停止不公平对待女性)”可知,作者认为在女足取得巨大成功的情况下,美国女足的工资却低于男足,这是不公平的。故选B项。

Last summer, a video from Cardiff showed opera coach Mary King wet-eyed during the finals of BBC Cardiff Singer of the World.Who had moved her to tears? Mongolian baritone (男中音) Ariunbaatar Ganbaatar, towering, broad-shouldered, with a huge smile and a mighty voice, the 29-year-old sang Rossini,Verdi and Tchaikovsky and charmed everyone, including the judges, who declared him joint winner of the Song prize. “There was something so imposing about the sound,” King said. “Contained and glorious. It’s very unusual to find this combination of presence, power and effortlessness.”
Ariunbaatar doesn’t have a typical background for a contestant in one of the world’s most celebrated opera contests. He grew up in the traditional Mongolian way, living in circular tents with his nomadic (游牧的) family. As a child, he rode some 60 miles a day, and he was always singing. He won a place at university in Ulaanbaatar but dropped out after two years when he couldn’t pay the fees, became a taxi driver and one night got chatting to a customer who happened to be the chief of police. Long story short: he joined Ulaanbaatar’s police orchestra, worked his way back to university, then onwards to the grand opera houses of Russia and Europe.
That backstory aroused my curiosity — so much so that three months later I was on a flight to Ulaanbaatar with a radio producer and suitcase of audio equipment. I had the same basic knowledge many westerners share about Mongolia: Genghis Khan, Gobi desert, furry camels, wild horses, wonderful throat singers. My guidebook described a proud nation. “It is rude to turn down an offer of horse’s milk,” I read, “for it is considered a gesture of friendship.”
International wins have made Ariunbaatar famous at home. Politicians hope his career will secure Mongolia’s position on the opera map-portraying it as a modern nation. He says he has no intention to leave Mongolia. His family still travel on the plain, still ride on horseback, still packup their tents to follow new grasslands. “Being with them on the land is what gives me inspiration to sing.” he says. “Wherever I am, that is what I imagine when I sing.”
33.Ariunbaatar won the Song prize mainly because of
A.his command of different songs.
B.his charming appearance.
C.his unusual background.
D.his impressive sound.
34.What is most likely to be Ariunbaatar’s turning point before he rose to fame?
A.He was admitted to a university for the first time.
B.He became a member of the police orchestra.
C.He moved Mary King and got the big prize.
D.He was raised in the traditional Mongolian way.
35.What can be learned from the last paragraph about Ariunbaatar?
A.He cares little about fame.
B.He hopes to become better known.
C.He wants to give his family a better life.
D.He draws inspiration from the horses.
36.What is the passage mainly about?
A.How Ariunbaatar became a famous star.
B.An introduction to an opera singer.
C.Why the author travelled to Mongolian.
D.A video about a celebrated opera contest.

The watch comes in a very beautiful case with a crocodile design on it.

A.She was invited to a celebration at a restaurant.
B.She got a pen as a gift from the author.
C.She passed the required assessment.
D.She received her Ph. D.degree.
12.What does the author mainly intend to tell us?
A.Whatever you do, you must do it carefully.
B.Whoever you are, you deserve equal treatment.
C.However poor you are, you have the right to education.
D.Wherever you are, you can accomplish your achievement.
