Most of us have formed an unreal picture of life on a desert island. We sometimes imagine it to be a kind of heaven where the sun always shines, life is simple, and nature gives us everything. The other side of the picture is quite the opposite — you either starve to death or live like Robinson Crusoe, waiting for a boat which never comes. Maybe both ideas are partly true. Still, few of us have had the chance to know what desert island life is really like.
Three men had such a chance not long ago. Their names were Jack, Tom. and Robin. They were moving a badly broken boat from the Virgin Islands to Miami for fixing. Halfway, the boat started to go down. In fear, Jack took a small rubber boat while Tom quickly picked up what they could — some food, matches, and cans of beer. Robin, the calmest of the three, helped tie everything together and gave each man some water before they set off. With sore muscles and nervous hearts, they rowed for hours before at last reaching a small coral island.
But the island was far from heaven. There were almost no trees and no clean water. The empty land and hard truth quickly broke their dream. The three men sat in silence, looking at the sea. Robin tried to stay hopeful and said, “we are lucky to be alive.” Jack and Tom nodded, but worry was in their eyes.
Facing an unknown future, they knew they had to use the few things they brought and anything they could find on the island. With no way to talk to others and no idea when — or if — they would be saved, they got ready to face what was ahead. Robin said, “We must take turns watching the sea, keeping the fire on. and looking for help.” He looked at his friends and added, “No one is coming today, but maybe someone will come tomorrow.”

Amanda and Susie, though sisters with a two-year age gap, had never got along. From the minute Susie was born, Amanda knew the baby disliked her.
As Susie grew, she hated Amanda for telling her how to do things. Amanda viewed Susie as spoilt, because she was the youngest in the family. At secondary school, Amanda shone at English; Susie was a maths whizz. Each made the other feel inadequate. When Amanda turned fifteen, Susie was angry when her sister was allowed to go to the youth club disco. Perhaps that was why Susie married so young — anything to beat her sister down the aisle. But Amanda got her revenge. When it was her turn, she chose a bridesmaids clashed with Susie’s hair at her wedding.
Now, despite being in their fifties, these grievances (牢骚) were still fresh in the sisters’ minds. The only thing they had in common was that they both loved their mother deeply.
Then one day, her father rang with the terrible news that their mother had died suddenly. Both sisters were stricken with grief, but Susie, was also upset that their father hadn’t informed her first.
Then their father told them about their mother’s will. “She’s left you the painting.” He said to them both. The painting — a portrait of the sisters by the mother — was the source of one of their biggest childhood arguments. To their surprise, it was bequeathed (遗赠) to both, “Your mom hopes that you each have it for six months and then swap over, for all your rest life.” added the father.
“We live miles apart. We could get it delivered.” said Susie. “It’s against the will,” their father replied, “‘I love to look at it, especially now you've both left home.’ Your mom used to say. Now it felt like the last link to her.”
For the sake of their beloved mother, the two sister began the cyclic keeping of the painting. This time it was Susie’s turn to deliver the painting.

Mary watched as students crowded around a notice announcing that the school’s radio station was looking for a second host. Butterflies filled her stomach—she had always dreamed of becoming a campus host.
The radio station was a big deal: it aired music, school announcements, and entertaining shows that everyone tuned into during lunch breaks. Olivia, the current host, was confident and talented, earning widespread admiration. In contrast, Mary was naturally shy, and speaking in front of others made her nervous. Still, she decided to give it a try, even as a classmate remarked, “You? You can barely read aloud in class without stumbling (磕磕绊绊)!”
Not discouraged, Mary practiced every evening by reading aloud from her textbooks. At first, she stumbled over her words, but gradually her reading grew smoother and her pronunciation clearer. She even borrowed books on public speaking from the library to learn vocal techniques. While her classmates chatted and laughed, she quietly absorbed every detail, determined to build her skills.
The day of the interview finally arrived. Holding the cold microphone, Mary felt her hands grow sweaty. She read the required texts perfectly—rehearsed (排练) thousands of times—but she struggled during the improvised (即兴的) part.
“Sir, I’ve been practicing for months, and I’m willing to work hard to learn,” she begged.
Mr. Carter smiled gently and said, “I appreciate your determination and your excellent reading. But during a live broadcast, anything can happen, and you need to draw your audience’s attention with genuine emotion rather than simply reading from a script.”
That day, no one passed the interview; everyone left except Mary. Lost in thought, she realized, “The problem isn’t with my pronunciation or reading…” It suddenly struck her that she could join the radio team in a supporting role to learn what it truly takes to be a host.

I was incredibly proud of my school, the Maplewood Elementary. It connected me to my roots, as my father and grandfather had all graduated from here.
So, when our teacher Mr. Dow announced a group project to create a brochure (小册子) about our school for its 100th anniversary, I was thrilled. The best three brochures would be displayed in the school library, which was a chance to show the new students how wonderful our school was.
I was paired with two classmates: Jake. who loved photography, and Lily who had a gift for writing. Working with others could be fun, right? But my enthusiasm quickly faded.
Our first meeting was a disaster. When we discussed which part of the school we should focus on, Jake kept talking about cameras and photos. I turned to Lily, hoping for some support. But she simply shrugged and said, “I’m not really into this. It sounds boring.” Jake nodded in agreement. The project seemed to be harder than I thought.
At our next meeting, I tried to lead the conversation back to the project. I shared some interesting facts I had researched about the school. However, neither of them seemed interested. Jake had promised to gather materials from the library, but instead he showed us photos taken on the weekend. Lily hadn’t started her part of the research either, claiming she had been too busy. I felt like I was the only one who cared.
Back home, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I stayed up late that night, trying to create the brochure by myself. But no matter how hard I tried, the result was far from satisfactory. I was exhausted and disheartened. My mom noticed I was upset. “You can’t do this alone,” she gently reminded me. “Jake and Lily have talents that can make this project shine. You just need to find a way to get them involved.”

“Why are you wearing your red dress?” asked Sherry, my classmate in sixth grade. The look on my face must have indicated that I didn’t understand the question. She asked again, “Your red dress... Why are you wearing it? Today is a blue-dress day.”
I rarely noticed what other people wore, so it never occurred to me that anyone would notice I had only two school dresses: a red dress with little yellow flowers and a blue one with navy trim around the neck. The red dress was my favorite, so I wore it on Mondays and Tuesdays. I put on the blue one on Wednesdays and Thursdays, then back to red each Friday.
“Oh,” I stammered (结结巴巴地说). “I, uh, dropped chili (辣椒) on it yesterday at lunch. I, uh, can’t wear it until Mama washes it.”
There was no judgment in Sherry’s question, just curiosity. For the first time in my life, though, I wondered, “Am l poor? Do my friends feel sorry for me?”
Until the day when Sherry asked about my red dress, I had never compared my clothes, my little white house, or my life with anyone else’s.
After school, I hung my red dress in the closet I shared with my older sister, Debra. I put on play clothes and went outside to sulk (生闷气). I climbed to the lowest branch of a scrawny oak and stared at my house.
My mother called through the screen door for me to come set the table. I climbed down from my tree and shuffled into the kitchen. Mama was mashing potatoes in a big, green bowl.
I opened a cabinet door and reached for five dinner plates. “Mama, are we poor?” I asked.
I thought my question might make her feel bad. Instead, she asked, “What do you mean by’ poor’?”
“You know, not enough money. Not enough food or clothes. No place to live.”

A Life-Saving Hero
My wife's job took her out of town a lot and I needed some company. So one day, I went to the local animal-rescue center. The little cocker spaniel (可卡猎犬) trembling in a cage caught my eye right away. She had scared eyes and I could tell she longed to be picked up and hugged. I gently petted her soft fur, and to my surprise, she stopped shaking. That was that. I filled out the paperwork and took my new dog—Honey home.
I'd had her only a couple of weeks, but Honey and I quickly became close friends. She followed me like a shadow from the very first day. She loved sitting on my lap. We often went to the backyard, where I picked up a ball and threw it. I sat down to watch Honey race after the ball. We had great fun together.
That October morning last year I decided to take Honey with me while I ran some errands (差事). She jumped in and settled down on the passenger seat. I got behind the wheel and started the car. We lived in a remote area up in the hills outside San Rafael, surrounded by tall redwoods. We had to drive up the mountain at a low speed to get to our driveway, which was barely wide enough for one car and ended at a steep cliff.
I turned around and backed up slowly. Just then, a flash of sunlight blinded me. I put my hand up to protect my eyes. Suddenly, the car slipped in the soft soil and rolled down the valley. I heard a horrible crash. A giant branch plunged (扎进) through the roof and hit my leg. We landed upside down. I was stuck. I looked over to find Honey. She was still in the passenger seat. She seemed scared but was not hurt.

At a local high school in San Francisco. Mr. Adams was well-loved by his pupils. He taught music, something he was passionate about ever since he was a child.
Not all students were fond of playing musical instruments and singing, but because of Mr. Adams’ fun and easy lessons, he instantly became every pupil’s favorite teacher. He would teach them how to play instruments and have jamming sessions (即兴演奏) with them where they performed the students’ favorite songs.
“You know, the key to making the kids love your lessons is to make it relatable to them,” he told his fellow teachers. “Once you catch their attention, it’ll be easier for them to absorb what you’re trying to teach them.”
Mr. Adams taught Grade 11 and 12 high school students. Thanks to his fun nature, his students respected him as a teacher but treated him like a friend. They went to him for advice and would hang out with him outside of class to play music and exchange stories.
One day, his students scheduled a day to spend time with him to make the playlist of their upcoming prom. It was such a formal dance that they would spend a lot buying dresses and suits. He was glad to help them and scheduled their session for Friday that week.
However, that Friday, Mr. Adams didn’t show up to class for the first time. “I wonder if he’s okay,” one student said, worried. “He’s never been absent before!”
The students waited inside the music room patiently. After a couple of minutes, though, the school director entered the room and said that Mr. Adams would not be returning any time soon.
“I know how much you all love Mr. Adams, so I’m disclosing this information. Last night, a forest fire burned down his house, and he was devastated. He worked hard to put up that house, but he couldn’t save it. He was only able to retrieve a few items, but other than that, everything he owned is gone,” she revealed. The news saddened Mr. Adams’ students.

Tim had always struggled with his weight. He loved food, but at school, he often found himself the target of cruel jokes and teasing.
His classmates would call him names like “Big Tim” and make fun of his size, and though Tim tried to ignore it, it still hurt. Every day, he wished he could be like the athletic kids, running fast and playing sports with ease, but that always seemed out of reach.
One day, a group of his classmates — three boys who were notorious for their pranks (恶作剧) — decided to play a trick on him. They knew Tim wasn’t athletic, and they thought it would be funny to sign him up for the upcoming school’s long-distance race. They figured he’d panic when he found out and that it would be fun to watch him fail. Without telling Tim, they registered his name for the race.
On race day, as Tim walked across the track trying to join his classmates in the stands, he saw some of them holding giant posters of his face with slogans like “The Big Runner” and “Go Tim!” He froze. He realized what had happened — the boys had tricked him into racing. His face turned red with embarrassment, but the crowd was already watching, and he felt trapped.
The starting gun fired, and to everyone’s surprise, Tim began to jog. It wasn’t fast, and he could barely keep up with the other runners, but he kept moving. His legs burned with each step, and his breath came in sharp gasps, but he didn’t stop. His classmates’ laughter echoed in his ears, but he ignored it.
As the race went on, something shifted. A few students who weren’t part of the prank started cheering for him. “Come on, Tim! You can do it!” they yelled. Their encouragement made Tim feel lighter, and his pace picked up just a little. It wasn’t about winning anymore; it was about proving to himself that he could finish.

In a small town in New York, there lived a young girl named Emily who had always dreamed of becoming a writer. Her parents, however, had different plans for her future. They wanted her to study business and take over the family store. Despite their wishes, Emily continued to write stories in her free time, hoping to one day published a book.
On a chilly winter morning, Emily was reading a magazine when she noticed an ad for a writing competition. She decided to give it a shot and submitted a short story without giving it much thought. Time passed, and she had almost forgotten about it until one day she received a notification informing her that she was invited to attend the final round of the writing competition in New York City. Excited and surprised, she realized her love for writing had earned her recognition.
Emily was overjoyed, but her excitement quickly turned to disappointment when her parents refused to support her. They argued that the competition was a distraction from her studies and her future responsibilities. Heartbroken but determined, Emily decided to find a way to attend the competition on her own.
She took on extra jobs after school and saved every penny she could. She also reached out to local businesses, asking for sponsorships. Her persistence paid off when a local bookstore owner, Mr. Thompson, offered to cover half the cost of her trip. With the remaining money she had saved, Emily was able to afford the competition.
In the following weeks, Emily was busy getting ready. She used all her spare time to improve her writing. On late nights, she leaned over her desk, writing down ideas in a notebook and revising sentences to make them clear and full of emotion. During this time, Emily read many books to gain new inspiration and discussed with friends who shared their love for writing, getting lots of useful advice. Every day, she rose early to practice writing and went to bed late after completing her tasks. She was a bit nervous but also thrilled at the thought of the upcoming competition.

Mr. Smith and his 12-year-old son, John, had gone hiking on the Red Mountain track in southern Utah. Mother, Allen, began to worry after the pair failed to show up hours later at a spot where she was supposed to pick them up, and phoned Sgt. Jacob Paul, who manages the volunteer search and rescue team for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
The red rock mountains of southern Utah are popular among adventure seekers, offering splendid sand dunes (沙丘), narrow canyons and sandstone cliffs that can be forbidding to inexperienced hikers because of dangers from rough terrain (地形) and terrible weather. Mr. Smith decided to take the hike the previous night. “It’s a typical track that we have taken so many times,” he said. On a navigator (导航仪) app on his phone, he showed his wife their expected route. “Look, we’re going to start right here. We’re going to end up out there. And we’ll meet each other in the park around this time.”
The boy and his father set out on their hike shortly before 11 a.m. on Sunday. Everything was going well. They got to the overlook that they were trying to check out. The plan was to meet Allen at a parking lot at the foot of the mountain by 6 p.m. at the latest. They were actually walking back, talking about what they were going to do the moment they got home. On the way back Mr. Smith decided to use the navigator app on his phone. On previous hikes, the father always relied on a compass, footsteps and tracks to guide him. However, this time Mr. Smith was depending on his GPS, and came to find out GPS took them somewhere on the most rocky places. It didn’t turn out the way they wanted. The application ended up sending them somewhere else on the other side of the mountains where they ended up getting trapped.
The navigator app not only led them lost but also drained (耗尽) the battery on their only phone. It was dark and the weather was getting cold.注意:

When David signed up for Ms. Sandra’s “Endangered Traditions” class at Willow High, he didn’t expect this class to be about saving history. Ms. Sandra, one of the few remaining masters of su filindeu, a handmade Italian pasta (意大利面), explained in the first class that this skill had been practiced for over 300 years and was the rarest of 350 pasta varieties worldwide. She emphasized, “Fewer than ten people in the world still master this skill. If we don’t act, the art will disappear.”
The students fell silent, realizing the importance of what they were learning. Then, with flour-dusted hands, Ms. Sandra shifted the mood. “Now, let me show you its magic.” The students leaned forward as she started the incredible transformation. She rolled the dough (面团) into a thick rope and then stretched it into 256 perfect strands (线). The classroom was filled with admiration as the teacher’s hands moved gracefully.
For weeks, David and his classmates threw themselves into learning the skill of making su filindeu with Ms. Sandra’s help, but it didn’t come easily. The dough kept breaking or sticking together. Sometimes, they couldn’t stretch more than 16 strands. Still, they refused to quit, helping and encouraging each other as they improved little by little.
One afternoon, Ms. Sandra entered the classroom with heavy steps. She sighed, “The school board thinks our su filindeu class isn’t practical. They’ve decided to cancel it next term unless we can prove its value.” She added, “It’s true that machines can mass-produce pasta in minutes, but if we only value what’s fast and easy, we lose centuries of knowledge.”
A wave of disappointment swept through the classroom. After a moment of silence, David stood up. “What if we let more people know about it? How about an exhibition?” he suggested. The class lit up with excitement. Inspired by their reaction, David immediately volunteered to organize the exhibition. Ms. Sandra watched, proud and hopeful. Perhaps, she thought, they really could work some magic.

The Last Oxygen
Juliette’s wrench clanged against the broken ventilator (通风设备). The air tasted of metal, like blood on her tongue. On the wall screen above her, the eternal wasteland glared back — cracked (裂开的) earth and toxic yellow clouds. “Cleaners die in 5 minutes out there,” the Siló’s children were taught. But Juliette knew the cameras hadn’t been cleaned in 49 years.
She wiped sweat from her neck. Three levels below, her father had disappeared last winter after questioning the “energy quotas”. Now her own tools revealed the Siló’s secret: pipes thinner than mandated, patched with decaying tape. This tomb is choking us, she thought.
A flickering server light caught her eye. Behind the cracked panel lay a dented hard drive labeled “Project Recovery”. Her breath hitched. Possessing pre-Collapse files meant execution (死刑).
The video loaded. A woman in a white coat stood before luxuriant forests. “Geoengineering failed, but natural air purification will conclude in 150 years. Surviving Silós must —” Static swallowed her words. The timestamp read 198 YEARS AGO.
Juliette’s gloves froze on the keyboard. If the air had healed, why did the screens still show poison?
“Mechanic 17.” Mayor Bernard’s voice crackled through her earpiece. “Report to Level 1immediately.” His office reeked of antiseptic. Surveillance (监控画面) feeds covered the walls like ivy. “Your father’s obsession with’ truth’ blinded him,” Bernard said, polishing his glasses. A tremor in his hand exposed him. Juliette glanced at his wrist monitor: Oxygen: 22% — the exact percentage from the ancient video’s “safe zone”.
Midnight found her in the forbidden server room. The external camera feed hissed with snow. She input override (超控) codes that her father once scribbled on a napkin: GREEN.
A single blade of grass quivered (摇曳) in the wind, its vivid emerald defying the gray desert. Then the screen died. Alarms exploded. Red lights bathed the corridor in blood. Guards’ shouts ricocheted off steel walls.
Juliette ran. Her boots pounded past flickering warnings: AIRLOCK BREACH! EXTREME HAZARD! The ancient door groaned (呻吟着) open, its gears screaming. Wind slapped her face — cool, damp, smelling of thunderstorms, not death. Beyond the concrete ruins, a silver ribbon glinted (闪烁) on the horizon. Water?!
“STOP!” Bernard’s roar boomed from speakers. “The Pact (公约) protects us!”
She stepped into the light.

It was 1975. I left school at 16 to work at the Tibooburra Pub, which had special significance for my family. The pub had first been run by my great-grandfather, Walter, back in 1913 and then he sold it. In the late 1940s, my grandfather bought it back. Having spent so much time there as a kid, 1 thought it was a great place to work in. Grandfather’s cheerful smile and comforting voice made those years precious to me. Unfortunately, grandfather died from a heart attack and the pub was eventually sold to a family, which meant I had to find work elsewhere.
I then got a job at the local hospital and enjoyed it, though nothing felt the same as working for one’s own family. Aged 20, I connected with a man named Craig. Later we got married. Running a sheep property kept us busy, but one thing stayed on my mind. “I’d love to buy back the pub one day,” I said to Craig. Part of me still longed for the days of being behind the bar and welcoming customers with a smile, just like my grandfather had.
In 2014, the pub came on the market again, so Craig and I went for it. Our offer was successful.
Running it again was like stepping back in time; nothing much had changed, and I enjoyed slipping into my old job. But Craig and I had plans to expand. We used our savings and did some renovations (翻新), like putting in a beer garden outside and building more motel (汽车旅馆) rooms. I felt like I was not only doing a great business, but also keeping alive our family tradition.
In February 2021, I went to the neighboring state to get some supplies and on the way back, I got a call from Craig. “There’s been a fire at the pub,” he cried. Being hours away was hard as I didn't know how bad the damage was.

Donna’s fourth-grade classroom mirrored traditional setups — five rows of desks, a front-facing teacher’s station, bill boards displaying student work. Yet there seemed to be an undercurrent of excitement filling the room that first day.
Donna, an experienced Michigan educator two years from retirement, volunteered for my countywide teacher development program. Our initiative used language arts to build up student confidence and self-efficacy (自我效能). Her task: implement these concepts. Mine: observe progress.
I settled at the back as students wrote on notebook paper. The girl nearest me filled her sheet with “I Can’ts”:
“I can’t kick the soccer ball past second base.”
“I can’t do long division with more than three numerals.”
“I can’t get Debbie to like me.”
Her page was half full and she showed no signs of letting up. She worked on with determination and persistence.
I walked down the row glancing at students’ papers. Everyone was writing sentences, describing things they couldn’t do.
“I can’t do ten push-ups.”
“I can’t hit one over the left-field fence.”
“I can’t eat only one cookie.”
By this time, the activity engaged my curiosity, so I decided to check with the teacher to see what was going on. As I approached her, I noticed that she, too, was busy writing. I felt it best not to interrupt.
Frustrated in my efforts to determine why students and teacher were focusing on the negative instead of writing the more positive “I Can” statements, I returned to my seat and continued my observations. Students wrote ten more minutes.
“Finish current sheets,” Donna announced. Students folded papers into a shoebox at her desk. She added her own, sealed the box, and headed out the door and down the hall. Students followed the teacher. I followed the students. Midway, she entered the tool room, and came out with a shovel (铲子).

The sun burned hot over Gudewadi, a small village in Western Maharashtra where the earth smelled of ripe cashew (腰果) and dust. I was the village bad boy because I had no interest in school or studies. Mud on my knees, dirty words on my tongue and a pack of restless troublemakers at my heels, I was the boy mothers warned their sons about. School? A prison. Books? Useless weight. The only lessons I cared about were what the fields taught: how to climb a cashew tree without being hurt, how to tell when the fruit was sweetest, how to outrun the teacher catching me skipping school again.
No one thought I would do anything worthwhile with my life. “Why waste time on him?” they’d tease, watching me whistling through the lanes. “He’ll end up back on the farms anyway. Some boys are just weeds, amounting to nothing.” Even the cashew trees seemed to whisper it when the wind blew. It seemed the village had already written my fate.
But my mother, uneducated, visualised a different future, refusing to let the world bury me alive. Every time I collapsed onto the bed intending to skip school, she seized my arm and beat me until I got dressed. “You will not rot here!” she shouted, marching me to the classroom door and watching me enter, her shadow like a stubborn cashew tree.
This bad boy image troubled me. I didn’t believe I was a bad boy and never wanted to be one. These thoughts lingered in my mind, like mosquitos buzzing around our cashew apples. For years, I had been torn by this contradiction. Then, one evening, as I sat on the farm’s edge watching the sun bleed into the cashew fields, the truth bit harder than any insect: I was becoming exactly what they said—a boy with nothing. No respect. No future.

It was a weekend. I had already planned to hang out with my friends. However, my mother called after work, her voice filled with childlike excitement. She explained that her company was having a spring outing the next day and asked if I could stop by the bakery on my way home to buy her a bag of coconut bread for lunch.
Without even thinking, I refused, telling her I couldn’t spare time because I had already made plans with my friends. She bargained with me for a long time, insisting that it’s just buying a bag of bread — it wouldn’t take long or delay me. She was almost angry by the end of it, so I reluctantly (勉强地) agreed.
But as soon as I saw the bakery from a distance, my heart sank. The store was packed, with a long queue snaking all the way outside. I couldn’t help but groan (叹息) hopelessly. As the line inched forward, I kept checking the time, standing on tiptoe to look ahead, dizzy from hunger. I couldn’t understand my mother — why wouldn’t she just stay home and rest on a weekend? Spring outings were for kids!
Just then, someone behind me called softly, “Miss.”
I turned around, seeing a middle-aged woman I didn’t recognize. Annoyed, I asked impatiently, “What?”
Her smile was almost humble. “Look, I’m just one person behind you, but that means I’ll have to wait for another batch (一批). I’m buying this for my son — he’s going on a spring outing tomorrow. I still need to rush home to cook dinner and take him to his tutoring class. If you’re not in a hurry, I was wondering if…”
“Who are you buying for?” she asked.
Without hesitation, I answered, “For my mom. She’s going on a spring outing tomorrow.” For some reason, as soon as I said that, the entire bakery fell into silence. All eyes turned toward me.

When I was in elementary school, I wasn’t very good at sports. I was always the last to be picked for teams, and I never won a race. I thought being slow and weak made me a failure. But one day, my P. E. teacher, Mr Harris, said something that changed my mind. He had been watching me struggle during a running drill, and after the class, he came over to talk to me.
“You may not be the fastest,” he said, “but you have something even more important. You don’t give up.” I didn’t really understand what he meant at the time. How could not quitting be better than winning? In my mind, if you weren’t first, then you lost. But Mr Harris kept encouraging me. He told me that winning wasn’t everything and that sometimes trying hard and not giving up was even more valuable.
At first, I didn’t believe him, but then he suggested I start practicing a little every day after school. “Don’t focus on becoming the fastest,” he said. “Just focus on improving, even if it’s a little bit each day.” I decided to give it a try, although I wasn’t sure it would make a difference. I began running around the track after school, one lap, then two, slowly increasing my endurance. Over the next few weeks, I noticed small changes. I could run longer without getting tired, and I was improving, even if I wasn’t winning yet.
As the school’s annual race day approached, I wondered if I should sign up. I still wasn’t fast enough to win, but Mr Harris encouraged me once more. “The race isn’t about being first,” he reminded me. “It’s about showing what you can do when you don’t give up. That’s real success.”

More than 20 years ago, Virginia Squier led a group of middle-school students on an exciting tour of England. Eager to share the experience, she brought along her 8-year-old daughter, Chambers.
One evening, as their visit was drawing to a close, Squier, Chambers, and the school group found themselves on a crowded platform in the London Underground. It was 5 p. m. , and the station was a sea of people. Commuters (通勤者) rushed about, some with briefcases in hand, others chatting on their phones. Squier, firmly took hold of Chambers' small hand and began carefully counting her students, making sure no one was left behind. Just at that moment, a train pulled up to the platform.
Suddenly, her daughter let go of her hand, jumped on the train, and the doors began to close. As the train gathered speed, Squier ran alongside trying to force the door open by digging her fingers into the black rubber gasket (橡胶垫). On the other side of the glass, she could clearly see Chambers' panicked face.
The last thing she saw before the train pulled out of the station was Chambers crying and pounding her small hands against the glass. Behind her, an odd-looking young man dressed in black leather rose from his seat and started moving toward Chambers.
Terrified, Squier searched for an employee. She spotted a man in a uniform, but as soon as she started to explain, she realized he was not a native English speaker, which made explaining her situation difficult. She was so shocked that her voice was barely above a whisper, too frightened to cry, and completely focused on getting this man to understand and help.
Just when all seemed lost, suddenly one of her students tapped her on the shoulder. “She's back, ”the student said. Squier turned around, and there, standing safe and sound, was her little girl.

【答案】
They walked around the island, trying to find something useful or a way to call for help. Jack climbed a rock to look farther, but he only saw the endless sea. Tom picked up dry grass and small pieces of wood to keep the fire burning. Robin searched near the trees and found some old glass bottles.“Maybe we can put a note inside and throw it into the sea,”he said. They wrote a message, put it in a bottle, and sent it out with hope. As the sun went down, the fire grew weak. The three men sat close together to keep warm, their eyes full of worry and fear.
Just when they began to feel hopeless, Robin saw something strange near the rocks. Walking closer, he was excited to find it was a broken mirror and a fishing net with a red flag reading “Rescue Team — North Beach”. “Look! We can use the mirror to send signals!”Robin shouted. Hearts beating faster, the three men tied the mirror to a stick and used it to reflect sunlight toward the sea. In the distance, a small boat seemed to be moving closer. They waved the mirror wildly. The boat began heading towards them! “They saw us!” Robin cried. The three hugged each other, tears filling their eyes. Rescue was finally coming.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
When Susie arrived, she found Amanda lying in the bed with her leg broken in an accident. The sight of her sister, pale and immobilized, stirred an unfamiliar ache in Susie’s chest. Susie’s initial irritation at having to make the trip faded away as compassion took over.“What happened?”she asked, her voice sharper than intended. Amanda grimaced.“Slipped on the stairs yesterday.”For a moment, silence hung between them. Susie hesitated, then set the painting against the wall. “Tea?”she muttered, already heading to the kitchen. As she boiled water, memories flickered — their mother’s gentle chiding,“Be kind, girls. Life’s too short.”Susie handed the tea to her sister gently. “Thank you.”said Amanda sincerely but embarrassedly.
Paragraph 2:
Silently, they began to admire the painting, and all of a sudden, a line of little words beneath drew Amanda’s attention. Leaning closer, she whispered,“Look — there’s something here.”Susie squinted at the faint script near the frame: “My deepest wish — that you see yourselves through each other’s eyes. Forgive, love, and cherish.” Amanda’s breath caught. Susie traced the words with trembling fingers, tears blurring her vision. “All these years... she wanted us to —”“Stop fighting,”Amanda finished softly. Their eyes met, decades of rivalry dissolving into shared sorrow. Tentatively, Susie reached for Amanda’s hand. The painting, once a battleground, now glowed with their mother's unspoken plea. It was a message of hope and reconciliation — a bridge mending at last.

【答案】
She asked Mr. Carter for permission and began by taking on small tasks. Organizing scripts, preparing playlists and setting the facilities, Mary threw herself into these tasks, treating each one as an opportunity to learn. During breaks, she observed Olivia’s hosting techniques—how she handled technical issues and managed to make the audience feel excited and engaged. When no one was around, she would practice, pretending to host her own show, announcing imaginary school news, reciting poems, or introducing songs, just like Olivia did. As days turned into weeks, her notebook was filled with her thoughts and reflections. Mary felt more confident, and she hoped she could finally share her voice with the school.
Then one day, Mr. Carter rushed in with unexpected news: Olivia had suddenly fallen ill. Mary stood up, her palms sweating but voice steady.“I’ve learned a lot these days. May I try?”The studio fell silent. Mr. Carter studied her determined face and nodded. Holding the cold mic tightly, Mary’s clear voice flowed through speakers. She perfectly reported the news that day, played up beat music, and even shared fun stories about their school’s history. Students paused their sandwiches, recognizing the new voice. By broadcast end, the radio office buzzed with approval. Mr. Carter smiled,“Seems we already have our second host.”Mary was still holding the mic, which wasn’t cold anymore, but held the warmth of every host who’d ever panicked, triumphed, and grown here—including her.

With only three days left, I knew I had to act. After brainstorming some ideas, I invited Jake and Lily to my house. Opening my grandfather’s diary, I pointed at the faded photo of his class.“Your camera can save the moment for the future,”I told Jake, whose eyes suddenly sparkled. Then I suggested he photograph every corner of the school like “time travelers”. Meanwhile, Lily was engaged in my grandfather’s love letter, eager to bring hidden stories back to life. I was busy organizing layouts, combining historical accuracy with creativity. The clock was ticking, but our laughter replaced earlier frustration.
On the final day, we presented our brochure in class. We stood by the blackboard as everyone went through the pages. They examined the brochure carefully, with their fingers tracing the photos, narratives and timelines which connected three generations of graduates. Noticing surprise on every face, we couldn’t wait to hear Mr. Dow’s announcement of the winner.“This work isn’t just about the school anniversary,”he finally said, tapping the cover where our three names shone,“it’s about how its spirit lives through students’ cooperation.”That afternoon in the library, seeing our brochure on display, we realized our combined talents had created what none could alone.

【答案】
“We don’t have a lot of extra money,”she answered,“but we get by.”Look around, we have a roof over our heads, food on the table, and clothes on our backs. She continued,“Your father works hard, and I take care of this home. We love each other, and that’s what matters most. There will always be people with more, but that doesn’t make us poor. We have what we need.”I listened intently, understanding dawning on me. Her words made me feel better. I realized being poor wasn’t about clothes or money.
After dinner, Mama said to me,“I washed and ironed your blue dress today.” She paused a moment and continued,“You can wear it tomorrow if you want.”I considered the offer.“No, I want to wear the red dress again. Its little yellow flowers make me feel good,”I replied. Enough to get by? Oh, I had more than that. I was fortunate with an amazing mother. She worked hard, played hard, and loved easily. Despite the hard blows of life, Mama chose joy and contentment. I was rich in every way that mattered.

【答案】
I knew I had to do something to save us. I moved a bit to see if I could unpin myself from behind the wheel but ended up crying out in pain from my leg. I grabbed my cell phone and dialed 911, but I couldn't get a signal at the bottom of this valley. Then, I caught sight of Honey. “At least I could save her”, I thought to myself. Painfully, I reached over, picked her up and gently put her through the hole in the window and gave her a pat. “Go home, baby.” She jumped to the ground and raced up the side of the valley.
As I watched Honey fade out of my view, my thoughts started to wander off. Had Honey found her way home? Would she get help for me like what happened in the movies? With time ticking by my pulse was weakening. I was about to lose consciousness when I heard Honey barking and I saw a man walking towards me. He told me that he was the forest ranger here. It turned out that Honey made it to his house, ran in circles to grab his attention and successfully led him where I was. I was finally rescued. What a blessing to have Honey join in our family!

“We have to help him!”the student council president said. The students immediately sprang into action. They organized a fundraising campaign, setting up donation boxes around the school. They also planned a charity concert, where they performed all the songs Mr. Adams had taught them. The whole school came together, and in a short time, they had collected a substantial amount. They used part of the money to buy essential items for Mr. Adams and saved the rest to help him rebuild his house.
When Mr. Adams finally made it to the prom, he was surprised to see everyone in casual wear instead of the formal clothes. The student council president stepped forward and explained,“Mr. Adams, we knew you lost so much in the fire. We decided to cancel the formal part of the prom and use the money we would have spent on fancy dresses and suits to help you. This is our small way of showing how much we care.”Mr. Adams was deeply touched. Tears welled up in his eyes as he looked at his kind - hearted students. He realized that the love and support he had given them were reciprocated in the most beautiful way.

By the time Tim reached the final lap, he was tired out. His legs felt like lead, and his chest tightened with every breath. Pain seared through him, but he pressed through, eyes fixed on the finish line. The crowd, now cheering for him, seemed to lift his spirits. With a final burst of energy, Tim propelled his legs forward, ignoring the burning in his muscles. As he crossed the finish line, his legs buckled beneath him, and he collapsed onto the grass, gasping for air. But a huge smile spread across his face — he had made it. Against all odds, he had finished.
The crowd erupted in applause. His classmates, who had once mocked him, were now standing and clapping and shouting his name. The boys who had set up the prank walked over, looking guilty.“We’re sorry, Tim,”one of them said.“You were amazing.”Tim smiled, his breath still coming in short bursts.“Thanks,”he said. Winning didn’t matter. He’d finished, exceeding his own expectations. The teasing ceased. He’d shown strength isn’t in size, but in heart. He’d proven he could achieve more than anyone thought.

They argued that the competition was a distraction from her studies and her future responsibilities. Heartbroken but determined, Emily decided to find a way to attend the competition on her own.

【答案】
They were trying to look for shelter when they came across a backpack with a note inside. John opened the backpack. Inside lay a flashlight, an blanket, and matches left by a previous hiker with a note:“For whoever needs hope.”Mr. Smith’s tense face softened, with relief shining in his eyes.“We’ll make it, son,”he murmured. Kneeling on the rocky ground, they struck a match and its tiny flame danced bravely against the wind. They piled dry branches around the flame to keep it burning through the night. Under the blanket, John pressed closer to his father, listening to his steady heartbeat — a rhythm that whispered courage. Above, stars blinked through the clouds, silent witnesses to their stubborn hope.
Early the next morning, father and son saw the rescue teams who were sent by Paul.“Over here!”Mr. Smith shouted, waving his jacket. John’s heart leaped, tears blurring his vision as rescue teams emerged. Paul, leading the group, grinned, “Your fire’s smoke guided us!” Exhausted but excited, John stumbled forward, hugging his mother who had insisted on joining the search. Mr. Smith clasped Paul’s hand, gratitude choking his words. As sunlight bathed the canyon, John glanced back at the charred matchsticks, now symbols not of desperation, but of humanity’s chain of kindness — broken tracks mended by shared light.

【答案】
A bird’s shadow flickered over the cracked ground as Juliette gasped — the air no longer burned her lungs. She knelt to touch the soil, her gloves crumbling to reveal tender green shoots. In the distance, the silver glint resolved into a river reflecting sunlight, its banks dotted with purple wildflowers. Suddenly, black smoke billowed from the Siló’s airlock — poison spray activated. She ran toward the water, her oxygen gauge blinking safe. A drone emerged, targeting her with red lasers Diving behind a rock, she glimpsed glowing fish in the river, a species declared extinct. The drone hovered closer. She grabbed a stone, ready to fight for this fragile Eden.
Inside the Siló, Bernard’s finger froze above the“Delete Data”button, the screen flashing:“External Oxygen SAFE since 2075”. His reflection in the monitor showed cracks in his resolve. If the truth escaped, the Siló’s hydroponic farms and recycled water systems would collapse — along with his power. A tremor shook the control room. Alerts blared: “Level 5 Mutiny in Progress.” Protesters’chants echoed up the stairwell. Through the cameras, he saw Juliette’s live feed: wild grass thriving where toxic storms once raged. A child’s drawing fluttered to his feet — a stick-figure family under a yellow sun, found in his daughter’s pocket after her Cleaning. The button glowed. His finger fell — not on“Delete”but“Broadcast All.”

【答案】
When I returned home and saw it with my own eyes, I broke down. The pub was reduced to a pile of ashes, with only the charred walls standing as a silent testament to its former self. The smell of smoke still lingered in the air, mixing with my tears. Craig stood there, equally devastated, as we surveyed the ruins. In that moment, it felt like all our dreams and efforts had gone up in flames.
“We’re going to rebuild it,” I said to Craig, firmly. Despite the overwhelming loss, something inside me refused to give up. The pub wasn’t just a business. It was a part of our family’s legacy, a place where memories were made and traditions were kept alive. We would not let this define the end of our story. With determination in our hearts, we began the long process of reconstruction. We reached out to friends, family, and even the community for support. Together, we worked tirelessly, rebuilding each brick, each beam, with love and resilience. And when the dust settled, the Tibooburra Pub stood again, not just as a building, but as a symbol of hope and the enduring spirit of our family.

【答案】
Paragraph 1
Shovel and shoebox in hand, Donna led students to the playground’s far corner. Beneath a gnarled oak, she knelt and declared,“Today, we bury what limits us.”A freckled boy eagerly dug a hole while classmates clustered, whispering curiously. Donna lowered the box crammed with“I can’ts”into the earth, her voice steady:“These words once anchored you. Now let them feed courage.”Soil thudded softly as students took turns patting the grave. A girl brushed tears unnoticed; a boy traced his muddy palms. Wind tousled their hair, carrying away whispers of doubt with fallen leaves.
Paragraph 2
After saying goodbye to“I can’ts”, they went back to the classroom to greet “I cans”. “Now, claim your ‘I cans.’” Pens scratched urgently. The girl who feared soccer wrote,“I’ll practice kicks every recess,” her letters bold. Beside her, the boy struggling with math vowed,“I’ll solve five problems daily.”Even the shyest student scrawled, “I’ll ask Debbie to share crayons.”When Donna pinned their pledges beside the buried“can’ts,”the board bloomed with color.“This,”she said, touching a sun-drawn “I CAN climb the rope,” “is where true learning begins.”Hands shot up, voices overlapping—not with limits, but plans.

No respect. No future.

I put in some cashew seeds when packing and headed for the university.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
It hit me that education was my only way out. Since then, I said goodbye to my bed to be the early bird every morning in my class and even stayed late at school after everyone left, my fingers marked with pen ink instead of dirt. While my old friends were stealing fruit, I was stealing time to study under the dim light of our oil lamp. I struggled for exams like hell and my grades inched up gradually until the day the university’s admission letter arrived. Clutching the letter, I dashed home excitedly and eagerly told my mom the great news. But as the rush of joy faded, I knew this paper was just the first step toward what awaited me in university life.
I put in some cashew seeds when packing and headed for the university. It was an eye-opener: lecture halls humming with debates, library shelves cradling with knowledge. When I mentioned the cashew trees of my hometown during my presentation, the blank yet fascinated expressions drew my thoughts back to the cashew seeds in my backpack, sparking my determination to research on this. Years later, my research received global recognition, but better than that was the proud moment when my mother, that same stubborn figure, held my papers up high to the neighbors. The former“bad boy”finally blossomed — not with mud, but with the seeds of perseverance.

【答案】
She asked loudly, “Who did you say you’re buying for?” I repeated firmly, “For my mom. She’s going on a spring outing tomorrow.” The woman stared at me in disbelief, then a warm smile spread across her face. “Oh, dear! Your mom must be so happy!” she exclaimed. The people around started whispering, their eyes filled with admiration. I felt a strange sense of pride welling up inside me. Suddenly, I realized how special it was that my mom still had the enthusiasm for a spring outing, just like a child. I no longer felt annoyed or impatient. Instead, I was looking forward to seeing the joy on her face when she received the bread.
The woman ahead of me turned around and asked me to go first. “You should get the bread to your mom as soon as possible,” she said with a kind smile. Touched by her kindness, I thanked her sincerely. When I finally held the bag of coconut bread in my hands, I couldn’t wait to get home. On my way back, I imagined my mom’s happy expression at the spring outing with the delicious bread. I called her and told her I was on my way. Her excitement over the phone made me smile. I knew that this simple act of buying bread had not only fulfilled her wish but also taught me to cherish every moment that brought her happiness.

A few days later, I signed up for the race. On the race day, I stood nervously at the starting line, surrounded by faster runners. As expected, when the race started, the others sped ahead of me. About halfway through the course, one of the fastest runners tripped and fell. Without thinking, I stopped running and helped him get back on his feet. “Keep going, don’t worry about me,” he said, but I stayed with him. We crossed the finish line together, much slower than everyone else, but we finished side by side.
After the race, I went to see Mr Harris. He smiled when he saw me and said, “What you did today was more important than winning.” At first, I didn’t understand. I didn’t win the race, after all. But he explained, “You helped someone, and that’s something far greater than crossing the finish line first.” At that moment, I realized he was right. The race wasn’t just about speed; it was about determination and compassion. That day, I learned that real success comes from the heart, not from a gold medal.

【答案】
Seeing her daughter, Squier's heart flooded with relief. She rushed forward and hugged Chambers tightly, tears of joy streaming down her face. As they calmed down, Chambers explained that the odd-looking young man in black leather hadn’t been a threat at all. Instead, he had comforted her and helped her get off at the next stop, then guided her to take the train back in the opposite direction. Squier was astonished by this unexpected turn of events.
Squier thanked the young man warmly and learned much from the experience. She realized how quickly she had judged him based on his appearance, feeling ashamed of her initial assumptions. This experience was a valuable lesson for her. She decided to be more careful and attentive when it came to her daughter's safety. She also learned people shouldn't be judged by their looks, and that there is kindness in unexpected places. From then on, she made a promise to herself to keep a closer eye on her child and to never let appearances mislead her again.
