Throughout the past year, we followed some interesting new inventions in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) . Here is a look back at some notable AI developments in 2022. Meta’s speech-to-speech translation
Facebook’s parent Meta said it had built a technology tool to directly translate between English and the Hokkien language, a spoken language without a widely used written form.
Meta said it trained its AI models on written text examples from Mandarin Chinese. In addition, developers used an encoding tool designed to compare spoken Hokkien to similar English text. Method to identify Parkinson’s disease
Researchers announced a new AI method to identify Parkinson’s disease. The system works by measuring a person’s breathing patterns during sleep. With just one night of sleep, the AI system was able to correctly identify Parkinson’s up to 86 percent of the time. With 12 nights of data, the rate went up to 95 percent. Tool to interpret pig emotions
Researchers announced they had created a technology tool that uses pig sounds to interpret different emotions.
The tool is based on thousands of recordings collected from more than 400 pigs throughout their lives. The scientists developed an AI-driven approach to identify a series of emotions pigs could be experiencing. It is expected to lead to further systems farmers can use to improve the productivity and well-being of their animals. Tool to fill in missing words in ancient writings
Researchers—led by Alphabet’s AI company Deep Mind—said they developed an AI system to help fill in missing words in ancient writings. The tool, called Ithaca, is designed to help historians repair the writings and identify when and where they were written.
The team said that when historians work on their own, the success rate for repairing damaged writings is about 25 percent. But when humans teamed up with Ithaca to assist in their work, the success rate jumped to 72 percent.
21.Which can be used for cross-cultural communication?
A.Tool to interpret pig emotions. B.Meta’s speech-to-speech translation.
C.Method to identify Parkinson’s disease D.Tool to fill in missing words in ancient writings.
22.Who will most probably be interested in Ithaca?

There is no doubt that leading a low-carbon lifestyle is a popular trend in the modern society, where a considerable number of individuals begin to undertake the responsibility to protect the environment. One of my Chinadialogue colleagues in Beijing recently bought a Philips energy-saving light bulb to replace a standard one. He was happy with his choice. It may have cost 30 yuan (just under US $ 4.50) — ten times the price of a filament (灯丝) bulb — but he wanted to save energy as part of his low-carbon lifestyle. And according to the shopkeeper, he would save, in the long run, much more than the 30 yuan he was spending.
Yet only one month later, his expensive light bulb blew up, before he had saved even a small part of the purchase price. Will he stick to his high-cost, low-carbon lifestyle?
China’s environmental organizations have started to advocate low-carbon lifestyles and the decrease of carbon footprints to help fight against climate change. But they have overlooked one fact: in China, low-carbon living comes at a high cost.
It means buying energy-saving bulbs and appliances, and environmentally friendly building materials and daily goods.Cost can no longer be the only standard for purchases. An energy-saving and environmentally friendly product is more expensive than a standard alternative — whether it’s a simple light bulb or the house it shines. For average consumers, even buying an ordinary house is a huge burden. How can we persuade ordinary people to choose an energy-saving residence? This is not a trend they can afford to follow; perhaps this fashion is only for the rich.
Most consumers today do not cause huge carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Their responsibility lies not in choosing a low-carbon lifestyle today, but in avoiding a high-carbon life in the future. The principle of “common but differentiated (可区分的) responsibility” — a basis of sustainable (可持续的) development — can be applied here as well.
In China, low-carbon living is still resisted by a lack of social infrastructure Even if your salary allows you to make that choice, nobody is there to help you accomplish it. Many so-called energy-saving buildings are even more energy-hungry than the average home.
24.What may probably be the best title of this passage?
A.To purchase a cheap bulb — your wise alternative
B.To live a low-carbon lifestyle — a promising but difficult purpose
C.To choose an energy-saving residence — a must of your life
D.To live a low-carbon lifestyle — each citizen’s responsibility
25.Why did the writer’s colleague get an energy-saving light bulb?
A.He wanted to save some money.
B.He was asked to do so by some organizations.
C.He wanted to try living his low-carbon lifestyle.
D.He wanted to use a more powerful light bulb.
26.We can infer from the passage that ________.
A.it’s difficult for most Chinese to try to live a low-carbon lifestyle
B.not all citizens have the same responsibility — live a low-carbon lifestyle
C.using energy-saving bulbs and appliances is a fashion
D.most Chinese families cannot afford to purchase an energy-saving residence
27.What is the writer’s attitude towards the low-carbon lifestyle?
A.negative but wise B.optimistic and entertaining
C.supportive but cautious D.positive and active
C
Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six years of age. But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days, a brush was made from camel’s hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush.
The brush did not last long. Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look ragged (蓬乱). His father said that the cat must be sick. Benjamin was forced to admit what he had been doing.
The cat’s lot was about to improve. That year, one of Benjamin’s cousins, Mr. Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed with Benjamin’s drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes. He also sent six engravings (版画) by an artist. These were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes Benjamin had ever seen. In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr. Pennington returned for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift. He asked Benjamin’s parents if he might take the boy to Philadelphia for a visit.
In the city, Mr. Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a landscape painting. William Williams, a well-known painter, came to see him work. Williams was impressed with Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long and dull. Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said, “Those two books were my companions by day, and under my pillow at night.” While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist.
28.The passage mainly talks about ________.
A.how brushes inspired Benjamin to be an artist
B.Mr. Pennington’s influence on Benjamin
C.the beginning of Benjamin’s life as an artist
D.the story between Benjamin and Williams
29.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 implies that ________.
A.the cat would be treated as soon as possible
B.the cat’s living condition would be improved
C.Benjamin would be punished for what he did
D.Benjamin would have real brushes soon
30.To help Benjamin develop his talent, Mr. Pennington _________.
A.took him to see painting exhibitions
B.provided him with painting materials
C.invited him to an art school in Philadelphia
D.taught him how to appreciate engravings
31.How did Williams’ two books help Benjamin?
A.They helped him learn more new words.
B.They helped him begin his landscape paintings.
C.They helped him get to know other famous painters.
D.They helped him make up his mind to be a painter.
D
A sedentary (久坐的) lifestyle eventually does harm to health but breaking out of long inactivity can be discouraging. Now, however, there may be a simple way to ease into more activity.
A recent study suggests that short bouts (一阵) of intense (高强度的) activity every day — climbing stairs, carrying a heavy load of things, or stepping up the pace of housework — can provide great health benefits.
“It’s quite simple, but it’s not an idea that’s out there,” says University of Sydney exercise scientist Emmanuel Stamatakis who led the research. “Many people, including many health professionals, still think of physical activity as something that you do during your free time, and you need to go somewhere to do it.”
Stamatakis and his colleagues, on the other hand, wanted to understand if daily life activities done somewhat vigorously in short bouts could also provide health benefits compared to a sedentary or less active lifestyle.
To study this, his team used data from nearly 25, 000 adults who were non-exercisers. Without these data, it was almost impossible to continue the study. Over the course of seven days, they used machine learning tools to determine whether a person was either sedentary, standing, walking, or doing intense activities like running during repeated 10-second windows. The researchers also divided any movement into light, middle, or high intensity. Then, for the next seven years, they recorded which study participants died and what caused the death.
The team found that people who did at least four one-to-two-minute high intensity physical activities every day had a nearly 40 percent less risk of dying from cancer and a roughly 49 percent ower chance of dying from a cardiovascular (心血管的) disease. More bouts of such strong activity meant greater protection from death risks, Stamatakis says, “The more, the better.”
32.What did the recent study find?
A.An inactive lifestyle is harmful but hard to change.
B.More physical exercises can make you more active.
C.Doing daily housework is also a kind of exercise.
D.Daily short but intense activities do good to health.
33.What does the underlined word “vigorously” most probably mean?
A.Energetically. B.Continuously. C.Frequently. D.Creatively.
34.Which of the following is mentioned in paragraph 5?
A.Research purposes. B.Research limitations.
C.Research findings. D.Research methods.
35.What would Stamatakis suggest?
A.Going to exercise at fixed time and place. B.Avoiding movement of light intensity.
C.Doing only 8 minutes intense activity every day. D.Carrying out more short bouts of intense activity.

It is hard not to desire victory when the world seems so competitive, especially if you’re a boy growing up with those values. A boy grew up in a similar environment where winning was all that was valued, and he longed to succeed. The boy was good at running, so he called everyone in the nearby villages for a race. A large group of people from around came to see this exciting event!
The boy had been training hard for this race. He ran among the strongest boys from around the villages. the young boy won the race! The crowd went wild with delight as they cheerfully waved banners praising him. The boy loved the attention. It made him feel happy and vital.
There were several types of races, sprint, long distances, relays etc. The boy was unbeatable in all the races he competed in. The crowd loved him even more after each victory; they clapped with excitement. The boy felt very proud of his accomplishments.
But among the crowd was a wise older man who did not seem as impressed with the boy’s victory as the rest. He shouted from the crowd, “there is one more race left, the most important one.” The boy was surprised by the additional race, but he was confident he could win any race.
The old man brought two new competitors for the boy, a blind man and a weak old lady. “What type of race is this? I can easily win them,” the boy exclaimed. “The most important one,” said the old man. So, the boy ran the race as he knew he would win this time too. When the boy crossed the finish line, the blind man was still at the start, and the old lady had just started to move. When the boy raised his hands as the winner, to his disbelief, the crowd was very silent. No one was clapping or cheering for his win.

A.A sculptor. B.A biologist. C.A chemist. D.An archaeologist.
23.What do the inventions have in common?
A.They focus on health issues. B.They are developed by Facebook.
C.They aim to promote productivity. D.They are AI-driven technology tools.
根据小标题Meta’s speech-to-speech translation下的“Facebook’s parent Meta said it had built a technology tool to directly translate between English and the Hokkien language, a spoken language without a widely used written form. (Facebook 的母公司 Meta 表示,它已经开发了一种技术工具,可以直接在英语和闽南语之间进行翻译,闽南语是一种没有广泛使用的书面形式的口语。)”可知,Meta的语言和语言之间的翻译能用于跨文化交流,故选B项。
22.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“The tool, called Ithaca, is designed to help historians repair the writings and identify when and where they were written. (这个工具被称为伊萨卡,旨在帮助历史学家修复这些著作,并确定它们写成的时间和地点。)”可知,历史学家最有可能对Ithaca感兴趣,故选D项。
23.推理判断题。根据Meta’s speech-to-speech translation部分的“Meta said it trained its AI models (Meta表示,它训练了自己的人工智能模型)”、Method to identify Parkinson’s disease部分的“Researchers announced a new Al method to identify Parkinson’s disease. (研究人员宣布了一种新的人工智能方法来识别帕金森病)”、Tool to interpret pig emotions部分的“The scientists developed an AI-driven algorithm (科学家们开发了一种人工智能驱动的算法)”和Tool to fill in missing words in ancient writings部分的“Researchers — led by Alphabet’s AI company Deep Mind — said they developed an Al system (由Alphabet旗下人工智能公司Deep Mind领导的研究人员表示,他们开发了一种人工智能系统)”可知,这些发明的共同之处在于它们都是由人工智能驱动的技术工具。故选D项。

【答案】24.B 25.C 26.A 27.C
通读全文,尤其是由文章第三段“China’s environmental organizations have started to advocate low-carbon lifestyles and the decrease of carbon footprints to help fight against climate change. But they have overlooked one fact: in China, low-carbon living comes at a high cost. (中国的环保组织已经开始倡导低碳生活方式和减少碳足迹,以帮助应对气候变化。但他们忽视了一个事实:在中国,低碳生活成本高昂。)”和最后一段“In China, low-carbon living is still resisted by a lack of social infrastructure (基础设施). Even if your salary allows you to make that choice, nobody is there to help you accomplish it. Many so-called energy-saving buildings are even more energy-hungry than the average home. (在中国,低碳生活还面临着社会基础设施缺乏的阻碍。即使你的薪水允许你做出这样的选择,也没有人来帮你实现它。许多所谓的节能建筑甚至比普通住宅更耗能。)”可知,文章主要讨论了在中国推行低碳生活方式所面临的挑战,包括高昂的成本和缺乏社会基础设施等。因此,B项“To live a low-carbon lifestyle—a promising but difficult purpose (过低碳生活——一个充满希望但困难的目标)”最能概括文章的主旨。故选B。
由文章第一段中“He was happy with his choice. It may have cost 30 yuan (just under US $ 4.50) — ten times the price of a filament (灯丝) bulb — but he wanted to save energy as part of his low-carbon lifestyle. (他对自己的选择很满意。它可能花了30元(不到4.50美元)——是白炽灯价格的十倍——但他想节能作为他低碳生活方式的一部分。)”可知,作者的同事购买节能灯泡是为了尝试低碳生活方式。故选C。
26.推理判断题。由文章第四段中“For average consumers, even buying an ordinary house is a huge burden. How can we persuade ordinary people to choose an energy-saving residence? This is not a trend they can afford to follow; perhaps this fashion is only for the rich. (对于普通消费者来说,甚至买一套普通房子都是沉重的负担。我们如何说服普通人选择节能住宅呢?这不是他们负担得起的潮流;也许这种时尚只适合富人。)”以及最后一段“In China, low-carbon living is still resisted by a lack of social infrastructure (基础设施). (在中国,由于缺乏社会基础设施,低碳生活仍然受到阻碍。)”可以推断出,对于大多数中国人来说,尝试低碳生活方式是困难的。故选A。
由文章第三段“China’s environmental organizations have started to advocate low-carbon lifestyles and the decrease of carbon footprints to help fight against climate change. But they have overlooked one fact: in China, low-carbon living comes at a high cost. (中国的环保组织已经开始倡导低碳生活方式和减少碳足迹,以帮助应对气候变化。但他们忽略了一个事实:在中国,低碳生活成本高昂。)”和第五段中“Most consumers today do not cause huge carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Their responsibility lies not in choosing a low-carbon lifestyle today, but in avoiding a high-carbon life in the future. (如今,大多数消费者并没有造成大量的二氧化碳排放。他们的责任不在于现在选择低碳生活方式,而在于避免未来的高碳生活。)”还有第六段中“In China, low-carbon living is still resisted by a lack of social infrastructure (基础设施). Even if your salary allows you to make that choice, nobody is there to help you accomplish it. Many so-called energy-saving buildings are even more energy-hungry than the average home.

根据全文内容,尤其是第一段“Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six years of age.(美国绘画之父本杰明·韦斯特在六岁时就展现了他的艺术天赋)”和最后一段中“The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist.(从那时起,9岁的男孩决定要成为一名艺术家)”可知,文章讲述本杰明·韦斯特从小展现出艺术天赋,并在亲戚和画家帮助下逐渐发展艺术才能的经历。
根据第一段中“Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush.(本杰明决定用猫毛代替。他从家里的猫身上剪下一些毛来做画笔)”和第二段中“Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look ragged (蓬乱). His father said that the cat must be sick. Benjamin was forced to admit what he had been doing.(不久,本杰明需要更多的皮毛。没过多久,那只猫开始显得毛发蓬乱。他父亲说猫一定是病了。本杰明被迫承认他所做的事)”可知,因为本杰明需要用大量的猫毛来做画笔,所以猫的毛被剪了很多,看起来像生病了。结合划线句“The cat’s lot was about to improve.(猫的命运即将改善)”和后文“That year, one of Benjamin’s cousins, Mr. Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed with Benjamin’s drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes.(那一年,本杰明的一个堂兄彭宁顿先生来拜访。本杰明的画给他留下了深刻的印象。回家后,他给本杰明寄了一盒颜料和一些画笔)”可推知,划线句说猫的命运即将改善,不再需要被剪毛,即暗示本杰明很快就会有真正的画笔。故选D项。
30.细节理解题。根据第三段中“When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes.(他回家后,给本杰明寄了一盒颜料和一些画笔)”以及第四段中“In the city, Mr. Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings.(在城里,彭宁顿先生给了本杰明创作油画所需的材料)”可知,彭宁顿先生通过提供绘画材料帮助本杰明发展才能。故选B项。
根据最后一段中“But he later said, “Those two books were my companions by day, and under my pillow at night.” While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist.(但他后来说:“这两本书白天是我的伙伴,晚上是我的枕头底下。”虽然他可能对这些书知之甚少,但它们是他对古典绘画的介绍。从那时起,9岁的男孩决定要成为一名艺术家)”可知,威廉姆斯给的两本书虽然晦涩难懂,但它们让本杰明下定决心成为一名画家。故选D项。
【答案】32.D 33.A 34.D 35.D
根据第二段“A recent study suggests that short bouts (一阵) of intense (高强度的) activity every day—climbing stairs, carrying a heavy load of things, or stepping up the pace of housework— can provide great health benefits.(最近的一项研究表明,每天短时间的剧烈运动——爬楼梯、搬运重物或加快家务劳动的步伐——对健康大有好处)”可知,最近的研究表明,短时间高强度的活动有益健康的。故选D项。
done somewhat vigorously in short bouts在句中作后置定语修饰daily life activities,根据后面“compared to a sedentary or less active lifestyle(与久坐或不太活跃的生活方式相比)”可推测,划线词应该和less active意思相反,应该是“高强度地,剧烈地”的意思。故选A项。
根据第五段“Over the course of seven days, they used machine learning tools to determine whether a person was either sedentary, standing, walking, or doing intense activities like running during repeated 10-second windows. The researchers also divided any movement into light, middle, or high intensity. Then, for the next seven years, they recorded which study participants died and what caused the death.(在七天的过程中,他们使用机器学习工具来确定一个人是久坐、站立、行走,还是在重复的10秒窗口中进行剧烈活动,如跑步。研究人员还将任何运动分为轻度、中度和高强度。然后,在接下来的七年里,他们记录了哪些研究参与者死亡以及导致死亡的原因)”可知,本段主要讲到了研究过程中的数据收集及分析方法。故选D项。
35.细节理解题。根据最后一段末“More bouts of such strong activity meant greater protection from death risks, Stamatakis says, ‘The more, the better.’(Stamatakis说,这种剧烈运动的次数越多,就意味着死亡风险得到了更大的保护,‘越多越好’)”可知,Stamatakis认为短时间高强度的活动有益健康,降低死亡风险,他建议多做这样的活动,越多越好。故选D项。

Let’s change the rule a little. All three of you finish together this time.” Still confused, the boy agreed to take another race. The boy raced again. But he guided the blind man, supported the old lady and walked along with them this time.
They three reached the line together, who was the crowd cheering? The boy was confused. The crowd cheered and clapped, which may be louder than any earlier. Who was the crowd cheering for? All three of them finished the race together. Again, he asked the old man, “who is the winner of this race? Who is the crowd cheering for?” The wise old man put his hands around the boy’s shoulders and answered, “Boy, You have won much more in this race than any other race you have ever run.”
