People have long known that dogs have a great sense of smell. Dogs have been used to search for missing people, and to detect (检测) drugs, bombs, and even illnesses. If you’ve ever thought that dogs seem to know when people are stressed, you were right. But scientists weren’t sure whether stressed people had a special smell. And if they did, they weren’t sure whether dogs could detect that smell.
Researchers at Queen’s University Belfast, led by scientist Clara Wilson, worked with four dogs. They taught the dogs to use special smell-testing instruments with three openings. The scientists used treats to train the dogs to find the correct opening. Over time, the dogs were given harder and harder smelling jobs. The final goal was to see if they could smell stress in the breath and sweat (汗水) of a person.
The researchers collected breath and sweat samples (样本) from 36 different people. They got samples when the people were relaxed and also when they were stressed. They asked people to report their stress level, heart rates and blood pressure. The people were asked to wipe their skin with a clean piece of cloth. Then they had to put the cloth sample in a tube, breathe on it hard three times, and close the tube tightly. Then came the challenge—the dogs had three choices: a sample from a relaxed person, a stressed sample from that same person, and a clean piece of cloth. In all, the dogs did 720 of these tests. They correctly found the stressed sample about 94% of the time.
The results make it clear that stress does have a smell that dogs can detect. Ms. Wilson says the news could be especially useful in training service dogs, since their job is to help lower that stress.
11. What does paragraph 1 mainly talk about?

A. Careless. B. Serious. C. Simple. D. Doubtful.
14. What is the use of the research on dogs?
A. Helping service dogs do jobs better. B. Teaching dogs to deal with stress.
C. Finding new ways to train all dogs. D. Making people understand dogs better.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Dogs Have Surprising Abilities to Smell B. How Dogs Can Help Lower Human Stress
C. Training Dogs to Do Harder Smelling Jobs D. Dogs Can Detect the Smell of Human Stress

Laughter, in response to funny events, may seem simple, but it actually takes a lot of work, because it activates (激活) many areas of the brain that control movement, feelings, and how we get along with others. Scientists now realize laughter’s power to improve physical and mental well-being.
People begin laughing when they are babies, which helps build strength in muscles (肌肉) and upper body. Laughter is not just about breathing. It depends on many ways that facial muscles work together, often including the eyes, head, and shoulders. By activating the neural paths that bring feelings like joy, laughter can make you feel happier and less stressed.
A good sense of humor and the laughter that comes with it need some ability to understand other people and remember things. Humor and laughter often come from seeing something special in a situation first. You need to mentally solve the unusual behavior or event. Or you won’t laugh. You might just feel strange instead. Trying to understand the intentions of others and thinking from their point of view can make your laughter and amusement even stronger. To get a joke or a funny situation, you need to see the funny side of things and believe there could be other meanings besides the obvious one.
Laughter helps us connect with other people. The language expert Don Nilsen points out that laughs seldom happen when alone, supporting their strong social role. For example, public speakers and comedians (喜剧演员) try to get a laugh to create closeness with the audiences. By practicing a little laughter each day, you can improve social skills that may not come naturally to you. When you laugh in response to humor, you share your feelings with others and learn from the risks that your response will be accepted by others and not be refused.
Laughter also produces positive (积极的) feelings, like amusement, happiness and joy. These feelings help us recover from problems and think more creatively. They make us feel better about life and more satisfied. Scientists have found that these positive feelings experienced with humor and laughter are related to understanding the meaning of life.
16. What is the first step to laugh according to the text?
A. Being very smart. B. Noticing something unusual.
C. Being positive to life. D. Thinking in the speaker’s way.
17. What does the underlined word “intentions” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Purpose. B. Choice. C. Attention. D. Request.
18. Why do comedians try to make listeners laugh?
A. To show they are clever. B. To make listeners feel closer to them.
C. To show their speaking style. D. To make the performance more challenging.
19. What are “positive feelings from laughter” connected with?
A. Solving muscle trouble. B. Stopping positive feelings.
C. Avoiding social activities. D. Understanding life’s meaning.
20. Why does the writer write the text?
A. To talk about why we laugh. B. To teach readers to practice laughter.
C. To show the good influences of laughter. D. To explain the social importance of laughter.
第二节 阅读七选五(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When you think of your closest friends, who comes to mind? Maybe the classmate you always talked with during breaks, or the neighbor you played with as a child, or someone else. No matter how you met these people, they probably have one key thing in common: ____21____
However, spending time only with people of our own age can make us more separated from other age groups. ____22____ So, we’d better make more friends of different generations (一代人).
Making friends across generations can be really good for both sides. Professor Dawn Carr said that making younger friends could help older people find meaningful ways to spend their time. Others might enjoy learning new ideas. Moreover, many said that their younger friends helped them feel younger. In these relationships, they could break free from the stereotypes (刻板印象) about how older people “should” behave. ____23____ With younger friends, he didn’t have to.
Young people might also value the hard-earned lessons of someone older. Panyin Pobee, a 32-year-old project manager, said that when he talked with people of his own age about looking for a new job, he found himself just complaining. But his older friend, who had been in a similar situation, was able to offer useful advice.
____24____ Many young people think their future will be like their parents’, but they should fight against that line of thinking. A greater pool of older friends can help people create their own blueprints.
A society that mixes different generations more freely would be less lonely and more open-minded. ____25____ They might knit sweaters with friends much older than them or even hang out at the bar when they are in their 80s.
A. You all have different life experiences.
B. They’re all around the same age as you.
C. Older friends can play the role of your parents.
D. It would also free people to follow life as they choose.
E. An old man joked that he didn’t want to leave the bar early.
F. It also keeps us from understanding other generations’ ideas.
G. Older friends also offer more examples of what growing up can look like.

They got samples when the people were relaxed, and also when they were stressed.

Sharing Life Online
Nowadays, many young people enjoy sharing their lives online, posting everything from daily activities to travel experiences. They often share photos of meals, selfies, or updates about their hobbies and achievements.
This trend has both advantages and disadvantages. On the plus side, it helps people connect with friends and family, allowing them to stay updated on each other’s lives. It also provides a platform for self-expression and creativity. However, sharing too much personal information online can lead to privacy concerns, and some may feel pressured to present a perfect image.
In my opinion, sharing life online is a great way to stay connected, but we should be cautious about what we post to protect our privacy and mental health.
