Every morning, she arrived at Sunnybrook Supermarket before sunrise, her silver hair neatly tied back. Customers often joked that she remembered their shopping lists better than they did. On March 28, 2024, the store held a quiet excitement. Younger workers, who fondly called her “Aunt Boonie,” decorated the break room with yellow balloons—the color of her favorite sunflower apron. A photo album sat open on the table, filled with snapshots (快照) of her through the decades: her curly 80s hair under a hairnet, her warm smile at an old cash register, and a recent picture beside the new self-checkout machines. At 2:15 p. m., the bakery team rolled out a cake shaped like a shopping cart, topped with tiny plastic groceries. Boonie froze, her hand covering her mouth. “You naughty ones,” she whispered, her voice shaking. Laughter and cheers filled the room. Then, a video began playing. A college student recalled how she had once quietly covered his bus fare when he came up short. An elderly widow spoke about the warm conversations that made her weekly grocery trips feel less lonely. A woman in her 30s remembered dropping her ice cream as a child. Boonie had knelt beside her, wiped her tears, and made her laugh before handing her a new one. “You taught me that kindness is the best way to help people,” the woman said, her eyes shining with emotion. Boonie wiped her own tears, laughing. “I never thought I’d be so lucky,” she said. A small box was placed in her hands. Inside was a gold brooch (领针) shaped like a checkout counter, with the words “41 Years of Sunny Smiles” carefully written on it. That evening, Boonie walked out of the store for the last time. The sunset bathed the parking lot in orange, but the warmth in her heart shone even brighter. 4. What does paragraph 2 focus on? A. Boonie’s friendly coworkers. B. The details of the photo album. C. Boonie’s history and memories. D. The preparations for the celebration. 5. How did Boonie respond to the video? A. She remained calm and smiled politely. B. She was moved and her eyes welled up. C. She was surprised at what she had done. D. She felt annoyed at the memories shown. 6. Which words can best describe Boonie? A. Hardworking and caring. B. Rigid and thoughtful. C. Ambitious and courageous. D. Reserved and respectful. 7. What is the best title for the text? A. An Excellent Team B. A Heartfelt Goodbye C. An Inspiring Career D. A Memorable Video C Those who spent more time typing or speaking with ChatGPT each day tended to report higher levels of emotional dependence on, and problematic use of, the chatbot, as well as heightened levels of loneliness, according to new research from OpenAI in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The findings were part of a pair of studies conducted by researchers at the two organizations. The launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 helped kick off a craze for generative artificial intelligence. Since then, people have used chatbots for everything from coding to therapy sessions. As developers like OpenAI push out more sophisticated models and voice features that make them better at imitating the ways humans communicate, there is arguably more potential for forming parasocial relationships with these chatbots. To conduct the studies, the researchers followed nearly 1,000 people for a month. participants had a wide range of prior experience with ChatGPT and were randomly assigned a text-only version of it or one of two different voice-based options to use for at least five minutes per day. Some were told to carry out open-ended chats about anything they wanted; others were told to have personal or non-personal conversations with the service. The researchers found that people who tend to get more emotionally attached in human relationships and are more trusting of the chatbot were more likely to feel lonelier and more emotionally dependent on ChatGPT. The researchers didn’t find that a more engaging voice led to a more negative outcome, they said. In the second study, researchers used software to analyze 3 million user conversations with ChatGPT and also surveyed people about how they interact with the chatbot. They found very few people actually use ChatGPT for emotional conversations. Cathy Mengying Fang, a study co-author and MIT graduate student, said the researchers are cautious about people using the findings to conclude that more usage of the chatbot will necessarily have negative consequences for users. The study didn’t control for the amount of time people used the chatbot as a main factor, she said, and didn’t compare to a control group that doesn’t use chatbots. 8. What is the main conclusion of the study? A. Most users rely on ChatGPT for emotional support. B. More ChatGPT use may cause emotional problems. C. Frequent ChatGPT users may lose control of emotions. D. Voice chat may lead to stronger emotional attachment. 9. Why are chatbots like ChatGPT becoming popular? A. They offer free services. B. Tech giants develop them. C. Their functions are advanced. D. They can replace human work. 10. What were the participants in the first study asked to do? A. Test ChatGPT’s technical capabilities through specific tasks. B. Regularly interact with ChatGPT using different modes and topics. C. Complete surveys about their emotional experiences with ChatGPT. D. Analyze their own conversations with ChatGPT for research purposes. 11. What can be inferred from Cathy Mengying Fang? A. The study has some limitations. B. She is critical of the study findings. C. The study conclusion applies widely. D. The study shows ChatGPT’s harm clearly. D An international research team has discovered that wild chimps (黑猩猩) in Tanzania’s Gombe National Park demonstrate basic engineering skills when making tools. They deliberately select flexible plant materials to create effective “fishing rods” for catching termites (白蚁), showing advanced understanding of material properties. Published in the journal iScience, these findings provide new insights into how animals develop tools using easily damaged materials — a poorly understood aspect of human technological evolution. Termites serve as an important food source for chimps, rich in protein and nutrients. To extract these insects from their complicated underground nests, chimps require thin, bendable sticks that can navigate winding tunnels. Researchers tested plant materials using portable equipment to measure flexibility. They found that plants ignored by chimps were 175% stiffer than those regularly chosen. Even among plants growing near termite nests, those showing chimpanzee bite marks produced more flexible tools than untouched ones. Lead researcher Dr. Alejandra Pascual-Garrido, who has studied chimpanzee tools for over ten years, stated: “This is the first clear evidence that wild chimps select tool materials based on mechanical performance.” Remarkably, similar plant choices appear in chimpanzee groups living up to 5,000 km from Gombe, suggesting shared engineering principles in their tool-making culture. This indicates chimps may possess “folk physics” — an instinctive understanding of material properties that guides their tool selection. Their engineering skills involve careful material testing rather than random choices. “By combining animal behavior studies with material science, we better understand how chimps evaluate tool effectiveness,” explained Dr. Pascual-Garrido. The research raises questions about how such knowledge is passed between generations, such as young chimps learning by observing their mothers. It also helps scientists understand early human tool-making skills that left no physical evidence. Dr. Adam van Casteren, a biomechanics expert, noted: “Though wooden tools rarely survive in ancient sites, the mechanical rules behind effective tools remain consistent across species.” This comparative approach helps reconstruct physical requirements that shaped early human technology, offering clues about prehistoric tool use that archaeology cannot preserve. 12. Why do chimps choose specific plant materials to make tools? A. These materials are more plentiful. B. These materials are commonly used. C. These materials can fit into termite nests. D. These materials can attract many termites. 13. What does the word “stiffer” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Lighter to carry. B. Easier to shape. C. Slower to dry. D. Harder to bend. 14. What does the study reveal about chimp tool-making? A. It follows an intentional process. B. It is passed down through genes. C. It proves chimps are as wise as humans. D. It is an ability limited to a specific group. 15. What is mainly presented in the last paragraph? A. Potential criticism. B. Study significance. C. Supporting evidence. D. Research background. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Our heads are noisy places, and a lot of the time that’s a good thing. ____16____. And reflecting on our problems and thinking over solutions is one of the best ways to move forward in life. ____17____. We beat ourselves up for our slightest failing, talk ourselves out of sensible risks we should actually take, or get stuck in a cycle of worry or shame. That kind of unhealthy mental noise is one of the subjects of my new book, Chatter. In it, I run through the evolutionary reason our heads are so noisy, what happens in our brain when we ruminate (沉思), and techniques for regaining control of our own inner voice. ____18____ Chatter happens when we get stuck in a mental rut (思维困境), repeating the same worries over and over again without reaching any useful conclusion or comfort. Breaking out of that rut requires putting some emotional distance between you and whatever is troubling you. It’s hard to figure out how to solve a problem when you’re super upset over it. Language can help. ____19____. It enables people to shift their perspective and see problems more objectively. All you need to do is stop your inner voice from saying “I, I, I”, and use some other word or pronoun instead. We know that it’s a lot easier for people to give advice to others than it is to take that advice ourselves. And what we’ve learned is that language provides us with a tool for coaching ourselves through our problems like we were talking to another person. It involves using your name and other non-first person pronouns, like “you” or “he” or “she”. ____20____, which helps you give yourself more constructive advice on how to deal with a situation A. Mental noise can often make us feel annoyed B. A busy mind is a sign of intelligence and creativity C. Therefore, you can depend on it to let your mind wander D. I shared one in a recent interview with a science magazine E. But sometimes all that chatter in our heads gets destructive F. This tool gives you some psychological distance from your problems G. Research shows a simple but powerful technique called distanced self-talk 第三部分 语言知识运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 There’s an autumn day that I recall every time I find myself caught up in the hustle and bustle of life. The beach was crowded with people, and the waves sounded beautiful. We spread out our towels on the soft sand and started to enjoy the warm sun. As we were lying there, we suddenly heard some commotion (喧闹) further down the beach. People were pointing at the water, looking worried. Curious, we got up and walked towards the crowd. We saw a dolphin struggling in the shallow water. The dolphin was moving around, its tail hitting the water. It let out desperate sounds. We knew we had to act. Tom and I quickly ran towards the water. The dolphin was quite large, and it would be extremely difficult to move it back into the deeper sea on our own. Just as we were trying to figure out a plan, a man in the crowd shouted, "You kids can’t do this alone! It’s too dangerous." We knew he was right, but we couldn’t just leave the dolphin there. At that moment an idea struck me. I remembered seeing a group of lifeguards on the beach earlier. I told Tom to stay with the dolphin and try to calm it down as much as possible, while I rushed towards the lifeguard station. I was out of breath when I finally reached there and told the lifeguards about the emergency. The lifeguards immediately sprang into action. They grabbed some special equipment and rushed towards the scene with me. Once there, the lifeguards quickly assessed the situation. They explained that we needed to work together to push the dolphin back into the deeper water gently. With the lifeguards leading the way, Tom and I, along with some brave volunteers from the crowd, formed a line around the dolphin. The water was shallow, and the sand beneath our feet was soft and slippery, making it hard to keep our balance. As we started to push, the dolphin resisted at first, still scared. But gradually, it seemed to sense that we were helping it. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 With every effort, we pushed and pushed. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The crowd erupted into cheers. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ NT20名校联合体4月高二年级期中考试 英语 注意事项:1. 1. We took small steps backward, gradually guiding the dolphin towards deeper waters. Finally, with a powerful flick of its tail, the dolphin swam away, leaving behind a trail of ripples. The crowd erupted into cheers. Some people were hugging each other, tears of joy in their eyes. The lifeguards congratulated us, emphasizing the importance of teamwork. Tom and I felt a deep sense of accomplishment. Looking at the vast ocean, I realized that nature’s beauty is precious and that we should always be ready to protect it.
