When Preeti Maske took up cycling at the age of 40, she had no idea a new hobby would turn into a passion, and then a profession with five Guinness World Records. A surprise first-place victory in a five-km fun run at her children’s school was what first fuelled Maske’s adventurous side.
In school, Maske played national-level hockey (曲棍球) and basketball at a state level, but after marriage and motherhood, sports were firmly in her past. However, the podium (领奖台) finish at her children’s school refreshed her competitive spirit.“Many women in their 40s feel like their dreams have been crashed,” says the mother of two. “Maybe I felt this more keenly and it showed.”
It was a cycling organization from Kashmir to Kanyakumari — down the length of the country — that made Maske take up cycling seriously. She kept improving and training, but being one of the few women in the group came with its own challenges. “Keeping up with male riders was tough,” she says. “I was slower, but when I caught up with them, whenever they said, ‘let’s go’, I would say, ‘let’s go’ — even though they had been resting for a while.” Among her cycling partners, Maske is known never to complain — even pushing herself after a fall or an accident.
Maske set her first Guinness world record in 2022, cycling from Manali to Leh, in55 hours and seven minutes. Her latest cycling milestone took her from Bhutan to India through Nepal, a journey of 1,803 km in 10 days, 18 hours and 40 minutes. As for what’s next, Maske has her eyes set on cycling from India to Singapore via Myanmar. Picking up on this persistent desire to challenge herself, she got the nickname “the extreme lady” from her daughter. Maske’s plans make it clear she’s bent on proving her daughter right.
4. What first motivated Preeti Maske’s spirit of adventure?

In April 1874, an art exhibit opened in Paris featuring famous and priceless works of art. However, at the time, no one knew that these paintings would one day be considered masterpieces. The paintings and the painters were actually unknown at the time and would remain that way for several years.
In the nineteenth century, French art was dominated by the Academy of Fine Arts. Every year the academy held an art show called Le Salon, the annual French state-sponsored (国家资助的) exhibition that offered the only real opportunity for artists to display and sell their work. In 1863, the Academy rejected one of the paintings of Édouard Manet. Manet and a group of other independent artists organized their own show, which they called Salon des Reuses (Salon of the Rejected), which opened on April 15,1874.
A newspaper critic named Louis Leroy visited the gallery and was not pleased with what he saw. One painting of boats in a harbor at dawn by Claude Monet particularly angered him. It was called Impression: Sunset. Leroy wrote that this piece, and in fact most of the pieces in the show, looked like “impressions” — a term for a preparatory, unfinished sketch (草图) made before a painting is done. Leroy’s newspaper review was jokingly called “The Exhibition of the Impressionists.” Within a few years of Leroy’s review, the term Impressionists had clearly stuck, not as a term to deride impressionists but as a badge of honor, and a new movement was born.
At the same time, the far-reaching Industrial Revolution promoted a new faith in the individual and his unlimited potential. The Impressionists Or “Independents” as they preferred to be called, brought together a wide variety of these influences, beliefs, and styles when they first exhibited and met in Paris cafés to discuss art. Their rejection of the Academy and the Academy’s rejection of them united the group. Impressionism was then regarded as a break from the rigid conventions of the art establishment, conveying a spirit of innovation and rebellion (反叛), a desire to reject the backward and explore new ways of seeing and representing the world.
8. What do we know about the Salon des Refuses?
A. It promoted traditional French painting styles.
B. It was organized and financed by Claude Monet.
C. It displayed items the Academy had turned down.
D. It was an annual French state-sponsored exhibition.
9. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Why Impressionists were not accepted. B. How Impressionists got their name.
C. Why Louis Leroy criticized Claude Monet. D. How Impressionists gained recognition.
10. What does the underlined word “deride” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Make fun of. B. Take charge of. C. Speak highly of. D. Be aware of.
11. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A. Salon des Refuses A Newborn of Fine Arts
B. The Rise of Impressionism: A New Art Movement
C. Louis Leroy: The Critic Who Changed Art History
D. The Industrial Revolution: The Impact on French Art

Reading, writing and sharing poetry can help people deal with loneliness and relieve feelings of anxiety, a new study shows.
Research by the University of Plymouth and Nottingham Trent University found that many people took to sharing, discussing and writing poetry as a means to seek the positive impact on their well-being. As readers connect with the emotions and experiences of the poet, this emotional resonance (共鸣) can contribute to a sense of shared humanity, reducing feelings of loneliness and causing deeper interpersonal connections. Additionally, the act of reading or writing poetry can provide an emotional release (释放), helping to manage stress and anxiety, which is important for maintaining mental health.
The findings are based on a survey of 400 people which showed that poetry helped those experiencing common mental health symptoms (症状) as well as those suffering from grief. Over half (55%) of respondents indicated that reading and/or writing poetry had helped them deal with feelings of loneliness, and for a further 50% it had helped with feelings of depression. Around a third (34%) felt that it helped them feel “less anxious”, 24% felt that it helped them “feel better able to solve my problems”, 17% expressed that it enabled them to deal with issues relating to loss of friends or relatives, while 16% said it helped with ongoing mental health symptoms.
“These results show the power of poetry,” said Anthony Caleshu, Professor of Poetry and Creative Writing at the University of Plymouth. “Writing and reading poetry, as well as engaging with the website, had a considerable positive impact on the well-being of the participants.”
In addition to supporting their health and well-being, the website informed social and cultural recovery and offered an understanding of how poetry was being used as a mode of conversation. Poetry often reflects cultural heritage and personal identity, providing a sense of belonging and self-awareness. This connection to one’s roots and to universal human experiences can strengthen self-esteem (自尊) and provide comfort in times of need. It now provides a means for how people around the world use poetry to manage their life.
12. Why does reading poetry help with feelings of anxiety?
A. It improves physical health through relaxation.
B. It promotes people’s confidence in themselves.
C. It provides an understanding of personal identity.
D. It offers an emotional expression and connection.
13. According to Paragraph 3, how many participants felt their anxiety reduced?
A. About 200. B. About 136. C. About 96. D. About 64.
14. What does the last paragraph mainly focus on?
A. The unique characteristic of the poetry.
B. The role of poetry in health and well-being.
C. The social and cultural function of poetry.
D. The value of poetry in increasing self-esteem.
15. By writing the passage, the author intends to ________.
A. recommend poetry as a form of treatment.
B. reveal the impact of poetry on mental health.
C. encourage people to read and/or write poetry.
D. promote the use of poetry in cultural recovery.

Adam Golebiewski, a 17-year-old teenage footballer on his school’s team, was extremely passionate about sports. Every match was a stage where he danced with the ball. However, fate (命运) had a cruel twist in store for this young athlete.
One evening, as the sun painted the sky with golden light, Adam was making his way home after a thrilling victory, his mind still recalling the cheers of the crowd. It was on this seemingly ordinary road that a tragic accident occurred, forever changing his life. A collision (碰撞), swift and unexpected, resulted in the loss of his legs below the knees. The world he had known seemed to collapse around him.
Days turned into weeks, and Adam found himself trapped in a cocoon (茧) of despair. The once familiar scent (气味) of freshly cut grass and the thrill of the game were replaced by the smell of hospital rooms and the bitter taste of loss. It was during these darkest moments that the light of hope glowed, thanks to the support of his teachers, coach, and classmates. They stood by him, their words of encouragement bringing comfort to him, reminding him that his spirit and his passion remained uninjured.
With time, Adam slowly recovered from his despair. He realized that while his body had been changed, his deep love for sports remained the same as ever. Fueled by this realization, he began a new journey of rehabilitation training (康复训练), a path lined with challenges. Each day, he pushed himself to the limits, bearing the pain with his strong will. Day by day, he persisted in training, and his health gradually recovered and his body became as strong as before. He was convinced that he could still become a basketball player.

As scheduled, the exhibition will be held in our city museum next Saturday, lasting for a month. In this exhibition, we’ll have chances to enjoy some masterpieces from famous Chinese painters of the 20th century. Additionally, there are lectures on some basic drawing skills, with which you are able to paint a simple Chinese painting on your own.
I’m wondering if it’s convenient for you to meet at the gate of the museum at 9:00 a.m. next Saturday.
Yours,
Li Hua

His goal was to join the school basketball team, but its high standards seemed unattainable for him. Frustrated by his initial inability to meet the requirements, he felt his daily training seemed like wasting time. Just when he was on the edge of giving up, a basketball coach of his school reached out to him. With kind words and a wealth of experience, the coach designed personalized training sessions for Adam. For a whole year, Adam pushed himself to the limit, growing stronger both physically and mentally. His determination and hard work slowly restored his confidence.
Finally, Adam became a member of the basketball team with the help of his school basketball coach. He tightly hugged his basketball coach, expressing his gratitude to him. He acknowledged that without the coach’s patience and guidance, he might have given up sports altogether. In the basketball team, Adam found not just comfort and friendship among his teammates, but also a sense of belonging. They cheered each other during practice and always had each other’s backs on the court. On the field, with each pass and shot, Adam proved that the love for the game was beyond physical limitations. His story spread, inspiring not only disabled athletes but also anyone who faces difficulties in life.
