When Paul Deines and his son Tanner head to the baseball diamond, they’re no longer playing just to win. But it wasn’t always that way.
“I was a horrible parent for many years,” said Paul, who used to coach his son’s team. “I would follow him around the field.”
“He was just being super hard on me. I made one error and I got a big talking to about it,” Tanner said. Every time he’d strike out in the batter’s box, Tanner would look right at his dad, fearing his disappointment.
The family knew they had a problem and something needed to change, so they sought help from a real professional.
After a 16-year professional player, Travis Snider now instructs parents to get off their kids’ backs, hoping to promote the culture of youth sports through his Seattle-based company 3A Athletics.
“Being a parent is incredibly difficult. And you throw the pressure of sports, the time, the money, the energy — it just intensifies that emotional attachment that we have to our kids who are the things we love the most,” Snider said.
Snider recalls a time when he was in the middle of a game at the age of 11. “At the time, I was the best player on the team, so that’s a lot of pressure. And then when things didn’t go to plan, it was just too much for my emotional regulation to be able to process that while there’s 6,000 people in the stands watching me fail,” Snider said.
Snider is pretty well aware of the situation of children like him, so he devotes himself to offering help now. The Deines family say they benefited directly from Snider’s lessons. Tanner is all in on Snider’s strategy to make youth sports a learning experience, not an end game. When asked how important winning is now, Paul Deines said, “I don’t care. I just want to see Tanner be happy.”
4. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. Tanner didn’t practice hard enough.
B. Paul was good at communicating with Tanner.
C. Tanner was overloaded with pressure from Paul.
D. Paul’s instructions benefited Tanner a great deal.
5. What is the purpose of Snider’s 3A Athletics?
A. To train high-level athletes.
B. To improve youth sports culture.
C. To upgrade youth’s academic performance.
D. To strengthen the bond between parents and kids.
6. What mainly contributed to the failure of 11-year-old Snider?
A. Poor preparation. B. Mental breakdown.
C. Lack of professional skills. D. Disturbance from the audience.
7. What can be used to describe Snider?
A. Capable and ambitious. B. Talented and generous.
C. Understanding and helpful. D. Demanding and humorous.
C 5. B 6. B 7. C
根据第三段““He was just being super hard on me. I made one error and I got a big talking to about it,” Tanner said. Every time he’d strike out in the batter’s box, Tanner would look right at his dad, fearing his disappointment. (“他对我特别严厉。我只要犯一个错,他就会狠狠训我一顿,”Tanner说道。每次在击球区三振出局时,他都会直直望向父亲,生怕看到对方失望的表情)”可知,Paul对Tanner过分严厉,导致Tanner害怕自己的表现让父亲失望。由此可知,Tanner被Paul的压力压得喘不过气。故选C项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“After a 16-year professional player, Travis Snider now instructs parents to get off their kids’ backs, hoping to promote the culture of youth sports through his Seattle-based company 3A Athletics. (在经历了16年的职业球员生涯后,Travis Snider如今致力于指导家长不要过度干预孩子。他希望通过自己位于西雅图的3A Athletics公司,推动青少年体育文化的良性发展)”可知,这家公司的目的是改进青少年体育文化。故选B项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第七段中Snider所说的话“And then when things didn’t go to plan, it was just too much for my emotional regulation to be able to process that while there’s 6,000 people in the stands watching me fail (而当事情未能按计划发展时,面对看台上6000名观众注视着我失败的场景,我的情绪调节能力完全无法承受这种压力)”可知,11岁的Snider当时失败的主要原因是精神崩溃。
根据最后一段中“Snider is pretty well aware of the situation of children like him, so he devotes himself to offering help now. (Snider对像他这样的孩子的处境深有体会,因此现在全身心投入提供帮助)”可知,Snider能体谅类似处境的孩子,致力于为他们提供帮助。因此,他是善解人意并且乐于助人的。故选C项。

For most of India’s history, spotting the tiger had been very hard. Poaching (偷猎), deforestation and other human activity caused tiger populations to collapse from 40,000 at the beginning of the 20th century to fewer than 1,500 in 2006.
But now a recovery is going on. Since 2006, the number of tigers in India has more than doubled, to 3,682. According to a new study published in the journal Science, the country is now home to 75% of the world’s tigers, despite having just 18% of the global tiger habitat. The big cats hang about 138,200 square kilometers of land across the country, an area roughly the size of Greece.
To explain this trend, the researchers investigated deeper into wildlife-survey data, gathered every four years since 2006. This allowed them to examine how various habitats and economic indicators, such as land-use characteristics, farm animal population and night-lights data, are tied to tigers’ being prevalent. They find that tigers thrive in protected reserves, where target food is plentiful and human disturbance is slight. These reserves, which have grown in number and size, have far-reaching effects by helping other threatened species, such as elephants and leopards.
More surprisingly, the study shows that, though protected habitats are important, tigers can survive even in the presence of humans. Nearly half of India’s tigers live in what the researchers call “human multiple-use habitats”, which are home to 60 million people. The study suggests that Indian officials have helped guarantee peaceful coexistence by compensating farmers for lost farm animals and channeling tourism profits into local economies. Such measures are crucial.
Above all, the researchers argue that tigers are making a comeback because of the government’s commitment to helping its national animal. Not only do targeted laws exist to protect it, but governments across party lines have acted on them.
8. Why are the figures mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To illustrate the diversity of the tiger. B. To show the expansion of tiger habitat.
C. To highlight the large area of the country. D. To indicate the restoration of tiger population.
9. What does the underlined word “prevalent” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Extinct. B. Widespread. C. Mysterious. D. Harmonious.
10. How do Indian officials ensure farmer-tiger living together in peace?
A. By creating more tiger reserves.
B. By training farmers to raise tigers.
C. By paying farmers for their loss of farm animals.
D. By encouraging farmers to travel for better economy.
11. What is the suitable title of the text?
A. New Laws Banning Tiger Hunting B. An Urgent Animal Issue to Be Addressed
C. Necessity of Protecting Natural Reserves D. India’s Successful Attempts to Save the Tiger
D 9. B 10. C 11. D
根据第二段“But now a recovery is going on. Since 2006, the number of tigers in India has more than doubled, to 3,682. According to a new study published in the journal Science, the country is now home to 75% of the world’s tigers, despite having just 18% of the global tiger habitat. The big cats hang about 138,200 square kilometers of land across the country, an area roughly the size of Greece.(但现在经济正在复苏。自2006年以来,印度的老虎数量增加了一倍多,达到3682只。根据发表在《科学》杂志上的一项新研究,尽管全球只有18%的老虎栖息地,但该国现在是世界上75%的老虎的家园。这些大型猫科动物在全国约13.82万平方公里的土地上出没,大约相当于希腊的面积)”可推知,本段利用数字来体现老虎数量的恢复。故选D项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“To explain this trend, the researchers investigated deeper into wildlife-survey data, gathered every four years since 2006.(为了解释这一趋势,研究人员深入调查了自2006年以来每四年收集一次的野生动物调查数据)”此处的“趋势”指的是上文提到的老虎数量的增加。
根据第四段中“The study suggests that Indian officials have helped guarantee peaceful coexistence by compensating farmers for lost farm animals and channeling tourism profits into local economies.(该研究表明,印度官员通过补偿农民失去的牲畜,并将旅游利润引入当地经济,帮助确保了和平共处)”可知,印度官员通过向农民赔偿农场动物的损失的方式来确保农民老虎和平共处。
根据第二段“But now a recovery is going on. Since 2006, the number of tigers in India has more than doubled, to 3,682. According to a new study published in the journal Science, the country is now home to 75% of the world’s tigers, despite having just 18% of the global tiger habitat. The big cats hang about 138,200 square kilometers of land across the country, an area roughly the size of Greece.(但现在经济正在复苏。自2006年以来,印度的老虎数量增加了一倍多,达到3682只。根据发表在《科学》杂志上的一项新研究,尽管全球只有18%的老虎栖息地,但该国现在是世界上75%的老虎的家园。这些大型猫科动物在全国约13.82万平方公里的土地上出没,大约相当于希腊的面积)”和最后一段“Above all, the researchers argue that tigers are making a comeback because of the government’s commitment to helping its national animal. Not only do targeted laws exist to protect it, but governments across party lines have acted on them.(最重要的是,研究人员认为老虎数量正在回升,这是因为政府致力于保护这种该国的国宝动物。不仅有针对性的法律来保护老虎,而且各党派的政府都依据这些法律采取了行动)”可知,文章讲述印度的老虎数量正在恢复,这归因于保护区的增加和政府的积极保护措施。故D项“印度拯救老虎的成功尝试”适合做标题。故选D项。
D
AI is currently being used in various ways. So what does that mean? Does it mean the world will soon be overrun by robots? However, when it comes to customer service, AI cannot completely replace human interaction, for now at least.
Actually, all customer service interactions have two aspects: emotion and urgency. New AI tools can handle high-urgency situations quickly, but as to high-emotion situations, no AI can deal with them successfully. A robot might be able to recognize you’re trying to check in for a flight recently canceled, but the emotional aspect is entirely un-programmable. Perhaps the passenger has increasingly high emotions about the flight being canceled because he is flying to an important business meeting. Cases like this can create high-stress moments for the customer. Only a person can understand the difference.
High-stress moments tend to stay with customers forever, so it’s important to have a plan in place. Good companies are better at determining which cases AI can handle on its own and which cases need to be handled by a human with AI assistance. In high-emotion cases, there’s no substitute (替补) for the personal touch of a human. Passengers whose luggage is lost are going to seek out an employee to help them locate their bags. Although AI can be used to locate their bags, it can hardly deal with passengers’ high emotions.
The conversation around AI now is too focused on the question of how AI can replace human interaction, which is missing the point. The aim of AI shouldn’t be to replace human interaction, but to improve it. The question here won’t be how far we can push AI, but how we can use our imagination to continue reinventing (改良) the problem-solving process.
12. What is implied in paragraph 1?
A. AI has had control over the human being.
B. AI can totally replace human interaction.
C. AI can handle high-emotion cases easily.
D. AI still has its own limitations at present.
13. Why is the example of a canceled flight mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To highlight the passengers’ high emotions.
B. To prove the efficiency of AI handling urgency.
C. To show AI can handle high-emotion cases well.
D. To stress the advantage a person has over AI.
14. Why should companies have a plan for high-stress moments?
A. High-stress moments require more AI tools.
B. High-stress moments can be handled by AI alone.
C. High-stress moments are unforgettable for customers.
D. High-stress moments are ignored by most companies.
15. What will we focus on when using AI to handle customer service?
A. Replacing humans with new AI tools.
B. Paying attention to solving problems.
C. Avoiding making trouble for customers.
D. Trying to invent more new AI tools.
D 13. D 14. C 15. B

根据第二段的“New AI tools can handle high-urgency situations quickly, but as to high-emotion situations, no AI can deal with them successfully. Only a person can understand the difference.(新的人工智能工具可以快速处理高度紧急的情况,但对于高度情绪化的情况,没有人工智能可以成功处理。机器人也许能识别出你正在办理最近取消的航班的值机手续,但情感方面是完全无法编程的。也许乘客因为要去参加一个重要的商务会议而对航班被取消的情绪越来越高。这样的情况会给客户带来很大的压力。只有人能理解其中的差别。)”可知,第2段提到了取消航班的例子是为了强调人类相对于人工智能的优势。故选D。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“High-stress moments tend to stay with customers forever, so it’s important to have a plan in place.(高压力时刻往往永远伴随着客户,所以制定一个适当的计划很重要。)”
根据最后一段的“The question here won’t be how far we can push AI, but how we can use our imagination to continue reinventing (改良) the problem-solving process.(这里的问题不是我们能让AI走多远,而是我们如何利用我们的想象力继续改造解决问题的过程。)”

I was a real theater kid growing up in Detroit. My parents supported me all the way — dance classes, community theater, auditions (试演)for plays. I got my B. F. A. in musical theater from the University of Michigan and spent summers studying at the British American Dram a Academy in London and the Stella Adler Conservatory in New York City.
I loved the feeling of being on the stage, displaying my strengths and creating connection with the audience. However, I discovered that, at the height of 5’2’’, I was too much of a shorty to be a Broadway dancer. I would have a better shot at an acting career in Los Angeles because I looked so young.
My parents drove me cross-country to California. Right before they left, my dad drew me a map of L. A. with magic marker so I could get my bearings. He also gave me a lot of encouragement before leaving.
I was so scared, I cried. Then I went out and got three jobs because I’m a Gen Xer; as extreme multitaskers, that’s what we do.
Fortunately, even though I was 22, I could pass because they thought I could act as a teenage girl. I found work on soap operas. Sometimes the roles were so small, I didn’t have many lines, and I’d have to tell my mom my character was mute (无声的).
The more my childhood faith deepened, the bigger the gap seemed to grow between the roles in the plays and the person I wanted to be. I said no to so many opportunities. As my thirtieth birthday approached, I grew increasingly worried.
One night, my agent emailed and asked whether I could try stand-up comedy. I like making people laugh, but I’d never considered doing stand-up, ever. Write my own material, stand in front of an audience all alone — with no one to play off of, as in improv (即兴表演) — and hope my jokes landed? Terrifying!
“How can I reinvent myself now?” I was at a loss.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
I turned to my father for advice.

Determined to act as wonderfully as those brilliant comedians in the photos, I. paced the hallway towards the stage.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I turned to my father for advice. He encouraged me, “Why not give it a try? You can make it. Buckle up, buttercup!” I took a stand-up comedy class and tried out my material at open mics. Three months later, I was at my first performance, standing in the narrow hallway of the world-famous Hollywood Improv, waiting to go on. The walls were lined with shiny photos of iconic comedians I’d grown up watching. All of them had performed on this stage.
Determined to act as wonderfully as those brilliant comedians in the photos, I paced the hallway towards the stage. Mic in hand, I started. After the first sentence, the audience laughed. I knew I was hooked. I was the only one the manager asked to come back to perform. I was making a living as a stand-up comedian. And I even toured with famous comedians. Seeing my achievements, my father called, saying, “As long as you never lose heart and put your heart into what you love, there are always fruits in store for you.”

To explain this trend the researchers investigated deeper into wildlife-survey data, gathered every four years since 2006.

A High-stress moments require more AI tools.
B. High-stress moments can be handled by AI alone.
C. High-stress moments are unforgettable for customers.
D. High-stress moments are ignored by most companies.
15. What will we focus on when using AI to handle customer service?
A Replacing humans with new AI tools.
B. Paying attention to solving problems.
C. Avoiding making trouble for customers.
D. Trying to invent more new AI tools.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

I turned to my father for advice.
