A new term means a fresh start. What do you like to do to mark the beginning of your new study life?
Yin Peixin, 12, Hubei
I do a special thing on the first day of every term. On the night before, I use a piece of paper and markers (记号笔) to make a “first day of school” sign. I write the words “first day of” before what grade I’m going into. Then I put stickers (便签) beside the sign and draw pictures on it. The next day, I take a picture with the sign in front of the school. To me, this is a meaningful way to mark the beginning of a new term and get myself into shape for studying again. Also, this school year will be a very special one for me. I’ll leave my public school in Wuhan to go to an international school in Mexico City. But I think this tradition will help me get used to it.
Zhang Hangming, 15, Tianjin
At the beginning of the school year, I will put down the positive keywords that I’ll hold on to myself in my follow-up study and life. For example, now as a freshman (新生) in high school, I write “persistence (坚持), effort, hard work” on a piece of white paper and draw beautiful patterns on both sides. Also, I’ve asked my parents to write on the back what they expect me to achieve in the new term. After finishing all these, I will hang this piece of paper by my bed.
Whenever I look at it when I’m tired, it can encourage me to learn.

As the capital of many ancient dynasties, Xi’an in Shanxi Province serves as the perfect backdrop (背景) for people to come from far and wide to dress in traditional clothes. Walking around the city’s streets, I felt like I had stepped straight into a city in ancient times.
In the UK, we also like to dress up wearing old clothes. There is a big event in the UK called The Goodwood Revival, in which people go to watch old cars race. Genetic engineering (基因工程) may help us make the perfect human. Babies may grow up to play basketball like Yao Ming. Also, we may be able to bring the dead back to life. Perhaps we will be able to make copies of ourselves, so we will appear to be alive long after we are dead. People may be able to find ways of putting the life of a person into a new body.
Nanobots (纳米机器人) will be important. We will use them when we are sick. For example, when we have a stomachache, we will swallow (吞下) a nanobot and it will travel through our stomach, taking a video of what’s happening there. The video will help the doctor heal (治愈) us.
In the future, computers may have feelings. They may be able to think better than us. We may be more and more interested in computers and the Internet, spending all our time in front of computers. Perhaps we will forget our real needs. Perhaps we will become super couch potatoes weighing 250 kg!

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can now do amazing things. ChatGPT is an AI that can answer questions, tell stories and do much more. But it’s very “thirsty”, said a new study.
When ChatGPT works, its “home”—data (数据) centres around the world—gets very hot. ____17____ Cold water goes into pipes (管道) near the computers at these centres. Because the computers are very hot, the water turns into vapor (水蒸气) and goes into the air. The water needs to be super clean. ____18____
If you ask ChatGPT 20 to 50 questions, it needs to “drink” a 500-milliliter bottle of water. When people trained ChatGPT, it used 700,000 liters of water, said the study. This is the amount that is needed to make about 370 cars.
____19____ Everything you do on the Internet needs data centres to work. There are more than 8,000 data centres in the world, said a report in 2021. ____20____ If AI keeps using a lot of water, we may have to “fight” with AI for water.
A. The number is still growing.

第一部分 选择题
一 、阅读理解(共4小题, 每小题8分; 满分32分)
第一节 阅读下面语言材料, 从每题所给的A 、B 、C 、D 四个选项中选出最佳选项。

People love to dress up in clothes from the past. Wearing old suits and dresses would make them stand out, if they were walking down the street in a common town. With TV programs like Downton Abbey making people more aware of old clothing, people are more willing than ever to take part with wearing the past.
People like to wear clothes to build a link (联系) between them and the past. Each item (件) of clothing represents (代表) a time and a place that means something unusual to the wearer, allowing them to stay away from the pressure of modern life and get lost in history. What will life in the future be like? Will it be much better than it is now? And what will we be able to do in 10, 20 or 30 years?
Genetic engineering (基因工程) may help us make the perfect human. Babies may grow up to play basketball like Yao Ming. Also, we may be able to bring the dead back to life. Maybe people will be able to meet and talk with their dead family members. Over the next 20 to 50 years, it will become harder to tell the difference between humans and machines.

Have you ever heard of Nessie? It’s a monster (怪物) in the Loch Ness! But is it real? On Aug. 26 and 27, scientists did a big survey to find out. It's the biggest survey in 50 years, said the BBC.And they used some new technology for the first time to help them.
The monster’s home is the lake Loch Ness in Scotland. The lake is 240 metres deep and 36 kilometres long, according to Britannica. That’s a big area for the search to check. But the team had thermal drones (热成像无人机). They flew over the lake and took special pictures. The pictures can show them heat made by living things like monsters! People also listened out for Nessie using hydrophones (水中听音器). These devices (设备) can pick up sounds underwater.
Some other technology was used before. In 2019, scientist Neil Gemmell got some DNA samples (样品) from the lake water. “When animals move about in the water, they leave behind tiny bits of DNA,” said Gemmell. But his tests showed that the animal is probably just a big eel (鳗鱼).
This time around, people may still not find Nessie. But with reports of the monster since ancient times and more than 1,000 official sightings (官方目击), the Nessie myth (神话) will probably continue to live on.

A. The monster Nessie might be just a big eel.
B. He created samples according to the monster.
C. The Loch Ness monster doesn’t have any DNA.
D. The big eel and the monster had the same DNA.
16. What does the writer think of the myth?

C. The monster will still be a secret.
D. Scientists will research underwater.
