When Judy was younger, she thought that her grandmother was the best cook in the entire world. Every time she visited her grandmother with her family she would be treated to lots of delicious food — buttery shortbread cookies and plates of crispy cheese crackers to snack on; piles of pancakes for breakfast; golden fried chickens and thick, hearty soups for dinner. No one would ever leave hungry or sad when they visited grandmother’s house.
But, as Judy grew older, she started to notice that her grandmother had begun to cook less and less. The complicated meals grew simpler, and the visits to her grandmother’s beautiful life-filled home grew fewer. Eventually, Samantha’s parents told her the truth: her grandmother had arthritis (关节炎) in her hands, which meant it was too painful for her to cook the elegant dishes.
“Why don’t we visit grandmother and just get food from a restaurant?” she asked. It seemed to her too cruel just to visit when her grandmother could cook for them and to pay no visit when her grandmother was sick.
Her parents smiled, appreciating their daughter’s kind heart, and told her they had suggested this but the idea had been rejected, “Your grandmother loves cooking. It saddens her to be reminded that she can’t share her food any more because of her illness.” Judy told her parents she understood, but she silently determined to find a way to help.
A few weeks later, Judy stopped by her grandmother’s house to deliver some groceries. As she carefully put away the boxes and cans in the kitchen cabinets, Judy discovered something she had never seen before. Sitting on one of the highest shelves was a small wooden box. Her curiosity aroused, Judy took the box down from the shelf and opened the lid.
Inside were hundreds of index cards and on each one was a hand-written recipe (食谱)! Her hands shaking with excitement, Judy flipped through the cards. She recognized all of her grandmother’s classic recipes — the cookies, the pancakes, the soups. They were all here!

The dream of a young pianist
In a small, quiet town, there lived a young boy named Alex. From a young age, Alex was fascinated by the magic of the piano. The moment he heard the first harmonious melody floating from an old piano in his school auditorium, a dream was born-to become a distinguished pianist.
Determined to pursue his passion, Alex begged his parents to let him take piano lessons. His parents, though not wealthy, saw the fire in his eyes and decided to make sacrifices. They bought him a second-hand piano and enrolled him in a local music school. Alex practiced day and night, his fingers flying over the keys, filled with the hope of one day performing on a grand stage.
However, life had other plans. One day, while riding his bike to school, Alex was involved in an accident. His right hand was severely injured, and the doctor’s words ruined his dreams: He might never play the piano again. For weeks, Alex sank into a deep depression. He refused to look at the piano and lost all hope. In his dimly lit bedroom, the boy sat aimlessly every day, his head hung low. His hands, once full of promise, now bore the scars of an accident that shattered his dream of becoming a pianist.
His music teacher Jack had been worried about him since then and tried to comfort him. Until one day, Jack walked into his room. “I know it hurts,” Jack said softly, “but your love for music is not in your hands alone. It’s in your heart.” Jack shared the stories of some famous composers and musicians who overcame physical limitations and hardships. These words lit a spark in the boy. Alex decided he wouldn’t let this setback define him. With painstaking effort and countless hours of rehabilitation, he slowly regained some movement in his hand. He started practicing the piano again, very slowly at first. Each note was a struggle, but he persevered.

The morning light streamed through the windows of the coffee shop as Sophia carefully balanced three coffee cups on a tray. There were still traces of the last day’s paint on her clothes, but no customer noticed, because they were too busy chatting or reading newspapers.
From the time Sophia could hold a brush, she fell in love with painting. Her bedroom walls were covered with drawings of blooming flowers, dancing clouds, and smiling faces. But life wasn’t easy for her. Sophia’s family struggled to pay the bills, and going to art school remained a distant dream. Still, she refused to let go of her passion.
Every morning, Sophia woke before dawn to work at the coffee shop. She wiped the tables, served coffee to the customers with a smile, and engaged in conversations with them. Meanwhile, she silently observed the changes in the light on their faces, or the wisps of steam rising from the teacups. These details later became elements in her paintings. At night, she returned to her tiny apartment, where a desk lamp became her sun. With leftover paper and discounted paints, she created worlds of color: fields of golden sunflowers, stormy seas with brave little boats, and children laughing under rainbows.
For years, Sophia’s paintings gathered dust under her bed. She sent them to galleries and contests, only to receive polite rejection letters. “Your work lacks depth,” one wrote. “They are too ordinary,” said another. Some days, tears blurred (使视线模糊) her vision as she painted, but she always whispered to herself: “One more try. Just one more.”
One cool autumn afternoon, fate arrived wearing a tailored suit. Mr Brown, a well-known art collector, was passing through the town when rain forced him to take shelter at the weekly farmers’ market. There, under the blue tent of a vendor (商贩), he spotted a painting of a girl running through a field of wildflowers. Her hair was flying like flames, and her hands stretched toward the sun. It was Sophia’s work, priced at just $10.

Known for his diligence (勤奋 )and pursuit of perfection, Leo had earned a reputation as one of the most reliable students in high school. It wasn’t just achievement he chased — it was perfection, as though a small mistake might ruin the value of everything else.
When the school launched its annual Green Week, a poster contest was announced to raise awareness of environmental issues. Many students saw it as a chance for fun. For Leo, however, it felt like a test he had to pass. Having followed news about climate change and taken part in online campaigns, he cared deeply about the Earth. But caring wasn’t enough — for him, the poster had to be unique, powerful, and perfect.
That very desire became the biggest challenge. As the deadline approached, dozens of drafts piled up on his bedroom floor, which were discarded (被丢弃的), rejected, and unfinished. Each attempt seemed not “good enough”. Whether it was a slogan(口号)that felt too common or a drawing that didn’t match his vision, Leo erased, restarted, and abandoned every effort. It was not that he lacked ideas. What he lacked was the freedom to let them breathe. Meanwhile, his classmates’ posters were going up in the hallway — some neatly colored; others experimental. Creative as they were, Leo could only focus on how much better his work had to be.
Tomorrow was the competition day, but Leo was clueless. So upset was he that he decided to take a walk. As the wind shook the trees and dry leaves danced across the sidewalk, Leo reached the neighborhood park. What met his eyes was not nature’s beauty but its mess. Piles of trash lay under a bench: candy wrappers, plastic bottles, and torn paper. Without thinking, Leo bent down and began picking up what he could. It was at that moment, observed by a little girl playing nearby, that something changed. “You’re helping the Earth,” she said quietly. “If it could talk, it would probably thank you,” she added. It was that one sentence, simple though it was, that stayed with Leo. If the Earth could speak, what would it say?

Awards lined the front wall of the music room from the past successes of large, talented classes. But a shift in educational policies (政策), with an emphasis on academics, had reduced my choir to a mere 32 students. My lead singers had graduated or been forced to drop music classes, leaving me with inexperienced kids who couldn’t read music and could sing only a simple melody (曲子).
This year’s singing contest would be held in seven months. Compared to other school choirs, the Madison choir with 75 members, King School with 125 students and etc., ours was little in size.
One day, a student asked eagerly, “What will we be singing for contest this year?”
I feared this moment. “Maybe we’ll skip the contest,” I suggested.
“No! We can make it!” the kids screamed.
“I’ll have to think about it,” I said, hoping their enthusiasm would die off soon.
But that didn’t happen. Every day they begged and insisted. However, I couldn’t tell them they weren’t good enough as I had to protect their self-esteem (自尊). My efforts to discourage their eagerness, by showing them a difficult piece of music from the contest list, simply ended with, “It’s okay, Mrs. Pliszka, we’ll get it.”
I struggled to make a decision. If I destroyed their hope, would I destroy their spirit? I wasn’t afraid of hard work, and I enjoyed a challenge. But I wasn’t a miracle (奇迹) worker. So I considered this dilemma.
Finally, one morning I stomped into class. “From now on, be in your seats with your music folders on the desk when the bell rings, and sit at attention, ready for warm-ups the instant I’m ready to begin. When I’m working with one section, there will be no talking from the others. You will listen, and you will learn. You will work harder. If all these rules are obeyed, we will be entering the contest. To achieve our big dream, …”
The rest of my sentence was lost in shouts of delight and applause. I was certain they would fail to keep this promise, and no one would have to be embarrassed.

Every October, my neighborhood has a Halloween costume contest with a different theme. And every October, my neighbor Ollie and I race to the announcement board in the park to find it out. But this year, the theme was kind of, well, theme-less.
“‘Be creative’?” I said, reading the announcement board. “That’s not really a theme, is it?”
Ollie hopped off (跳下) his skateboard to get a closer look. “You’re right,” he agreed.
“Now that’s the creative spirit we need for this challenge!” I proposed that we should start by choosing some cool costume - making materials.
Just at that time, Ollie scooped up (捧起) a bunch of fallen leaves and exclaimed he had got a brilliant idea.
Seized by confusion, I asked, “You’re going to make an entire costume out of leaves?”
Seemed to be amused by my look, he grinned and scooped up some more. “Why not?” he said, “They’ re totally free, and I can guarantee, no one will be a tree as great as me.”
Upon hearing that, I added that now that was the creative spirit We need for this challenge! “Aw, come on,” I said. “You should be flattered that I like your idea so much. Plus, I just thought of the perfect way to make branches.”
Luckily, Ollie said OK. We ended up filling two jumbo bags with different kinds of leaves. Ollie’s grandma helped get us set up with tons of excellent costume-making supplies, and we worked forever! At last, when we were finally in the homestretch, I complained. “I’m so tired of gluing leaves.”
When we were done, we tried on part of our costumes, and we could tell they really would be fantastic. It took us hours to get ready the next morning, and we probably lost half our leaves shuffling over to the park. Still, when it was time for contestants to line up in the judging area, I felt pretty proud.
However, after a few minutes, I started having another feeling. As I was standing there in the costume, the feeling got worse, and worse, and worse until I was so itchy (痒), I just had to scratch (挠). I started wiggling (摇动;扭动) around uncomfortably.

It had been a long, tiring day because Carl had driven for 12 hours without a break. “Ah, I can finally get home now,” the tired driver sighed. He crossed a corner and noticed a panic-stricken woman getting off a taxi with a child in her arms.
“What’s going on? Why is she shouting at the driver?” Carl wondered and slowed down near them. Carl was curious and got off the cab to find out what happened. Then he realized the woman was begging the driver not to leave.
“Hey, Miss! Why are you crying?” Carl saw her holding a little boy in her arms, who had difficulty breathing. Carl realized the boy was having a seizure (疾病的突然发作) and asked the woman to get into his taxi. “He’s having an attack! Please hurry up, Miss! We have to get him to the hospital!” Carl drove as fast as he could, praying not to get trapped in traffic.
The woman told Carl that she and her four-year-old son, Tyler, were returning from the park when it started raining. “I told the driver I would pay him once I got home because I didn’t have my purse with me. But then my son suddenly had a seizure, so I asked the driver to take us to the hospital instead. But he refused.”
“Don’t worry, Miss. I will get you to the hospital on time, alright?” Half an hour later, they arrived at the hospital. Tyler was rushed inside for treatment.
An hour later, the doctor came out and said, “Mrs. Thomas, your son is out of danger now. But it could have been fatal if you hadn’t made it here on time.” Mrs. Thomas immediately looked at Carl and joined his hands in tears, thanking him for saving her son’s life. Tears fogged in Carl’s eyes. He was glad Tyler was out of danger. Later, he dropped them off at home, and when Mrs. Thomas came out to pay him, he refused. “I have a policy. NO FARES for those making trips to the hospital!” revealed Carl.

In 2018, 17-year-old Hemesh spent a life-changing summer with his grandmother Anne, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Witnessing the impact of the disease firsthand, Hemesh was awakened to the seriousness of the situation.
One night, Hemesh walked into the kitchen only to discover that his grandmother had left the gas stove (炉) on after making tea. Shocked by the dangerous consequences Alzheimer’s disease could bring about, he couldn’t help but wonder what might have happened if he hadn’t been there.
Hemesh’s worries increased as he observed his grandmother’s behavior. She would wake up in the early hours of the morning, believing she was on a train, and wander outside aimlessly. This wandering tendency could potentially lead her to get lost or put herself in risky situations.
Determined to make a difference, Hemesh engaged himself in extensive research about Alzheimer’s disease and its symptomatic (症状的) progression. Through his studies, he discovered that wandering was a common problem among dementia patients, especially those with Alzheimer’s disease.
Inspired by his newfound knowledge and fueled by his desire to help, Hemesh told his family, “I can’t just stand by and watch this happen. I need to do something to keep Grandma safe. I think I have an idea that might help not just her, but others in similar situations.”
With firm determination, he developed an inventive answer to the wandering dilemma, a device he called the Guardian Companion. It was a wearable device, similar to a smartwatch, specifically designed for Alzheimer’s patients. It integrated advanced GPS technology and a panic button to assist those who tended to wander, ensuring their safety and well-being. After the device got its official approval, Hemesh happily went to try it on for his grandmother.

One sunny afternoon my elder brother Ricky and I were sitting in the back seat of my dad’s black truck. We were excited! Our first time to Six Flags! While backing out of our driveway, I rolled down the window.
The drive to Six Flags wasn’t long since we lived near the freeway. As we passed the bridge, I knew we were getting close. As we sat in the car, I was wearing a pink blouse with leggings. I had tied my hair into a braid. My brother was wearing a black T-shirt with shorts on. Ricky was eleven and I was eight years old. “Liz, we’re finally getting to Six Flags!” he told me.
We got off the freeway and entered the parking lot. It took us about twenty minutes to find parking. As we walked to the park, I remembered that there was a Christmas specially planned for that day. I could smell popcorn and hear people screaming on roller coasters. Also I saw an area with snow that looked like shaved ice.
My dad said, “Let’s go to the gift shop first.” Ricky and I looked at all the toys. Our eyes looked like giant snow balls. Our dad said we could only get one thing. We ran to the area with all the beautiful toys. I picked out my favorite, Tweety Bird. When Ricky and I turned back around, we couldn’t see our dad anymore.
Ricky said, “Hold my hand and stay close.” I was so scared that my face looked like a tomato. We had no phone to contact our dad, so we stayed where we were. Ten minutes later we saw a guy with the same clothing as our dad. We ran to him, but it turned out that his face looked nothing like our dad’s.

Henry finished rolling copies of The Gazette, filled his bag and took off to deliver the news.
It was 8:15 a.m. when he delivered the last newspaper. He had put the paper where Mr.Grady could get it without struggling to the sidewalk. Across the street, Henry’s delivery had landed perfectly too. Mrs. Burke, with twin babies, probably liked having her paper within easy reach.
Henry parked his bike near the office building and bounded up to the editor-in-chiefs door. Mr. Trotta said, “We’re closing shop, Henry. Advertising is down. Television is how people get their news today.”
“Um, no,” said Henry. “I’ve met so many people on my route. It’s sad. People won’t get their neighborhood news anymore.”
Mr. Trotta nodded and sighed. “We held out as long as we could," he said. “You were terrific, Henry — always dependable.”
A week after his last deliveries, Henry wondered if his customers missed The Gazette as much as he did. He thought of a way to find out. He started out on his old route with a notebook. First stop: Mr. Jonas, 17 Oak. Mr. Jonas said that he liked reading the week’s happenings and he had a pile of comics from old copies of The Gazette. He wondered if anyone would want them. Henry made a note in his notebook.
Mrs. Burke said she needed a babysitter. She was going to put an ad in The Gazette, but…
As Henry made more notes, an idea started forming in his head. Maybe he could create a newsy page for the neighbors. But how would he print it? He went to the library and explained everything to Miss Ginger, the librarian. “Follow me,” she said. Seconds later, in front of a machine, Miss Ginger turned a handle and a purple-printed sheet rolled out. “ Will mimeographed (油印的) copies work?” she asked.
“Perfect.”

John was a shy child and often found himself alone at school. He used to suffer a lot. He rarely discussed anything in and after class or interacted with his teachers. It seemed that he preferred to stay in his own world. However, his classmates didn’t understand his quietness or interests and often didn’t invite him to take part in activities on purpose. In reality, however, John felt very lonely and was eager to connect with others, but didn’t know how to break down the barriers. He was dying to turn to someone for help.
Sadly, John’s parents were too busy with daily chores (家务) to notice the change in him as he became quieter and more distant. Even when John gathered his courage to share his feelings, he was simply comforted by words like, “Go and get it. We know you can do it.”
However, John was totally confused about how to pull himself out of this current situation. Sometimes, at home, he had no choice but to play his favorite jigsaw (拼图) in silence and avoid interacting with his parents. Gradually, he began to wonder if he was doing something wrong or if he really wasn’t good at making friends. He felt sad and started not to communicate with others.
Luckily, John’s English teacher noticed his trouble and decided to step in to help. The teacher organized a class project after a math test, which seemed quite challenging for most students, but not for John. The teacher required the students to work together in groups to solve the problems and then he would invite someone to present their critical ideas on behalf of (代表) the group. The teacher then intentionally placed John in a group that was likely to give him confidence and encouraged him to show his strengths.

In his little American household, which housed several people from his family, Jase was writing letters to Santa weeks before Christmas…
“Dear Santa,
It’s me, Jase! Daddy bought me a special costume, but it didn’t feel special. How about you give me something different this year? Then I can be a true hero and save lives. I can be a firefighter, you know! Please grant my wish!”
After writing the letter, Jase tucked it under his pillow and dozed off. A few days later, when he ran down the stairs, he saw a giant Christmas tree in the living room and a pile of parcels underneath it. “This is for Mom… This one is for Dad… Where’s mine?” “Yay! Gotcha!” he exclaimed as he began unwrapping it. As Jase saw it was a firetruck, he couldn’t contain his excitement. Jase had learned at school that firefighters were true heroes who saved people from danger. So the little boy wished to be a firefighter, and all his favorite toys were also related to firefighters!
Jase’s family had his twin sisters, Milly and Rosie, his dad, Peter, and his mom, Lydia. They were happy in their cozy tiny home, and every celebration in their household was a sweet affair. Jase was so happy with his Christmas present that year that he spent the whole day driving his toy truck. He also gave his little sisters a ride in it, and they loved it.
After dinner that night, when everyone was asleep, Jase was up and decided to drive the truck around the house. He had enjoyed it so much that he hadn’t left his truck for even an hour that day! When he couldn’t sleep, he decided to take his truck down to the living room and play with it. Suddenly, Jase felt something strange — a mixture of smoke, heat, and light — and stopped. When he turned around, he saw smoke from the Christmas tree, its bottom in flames. Jase’s parents had forgotten to put out some candles, which had caught the tree’s back and the living room curtains on fire.

One evening, Janice had been crying for more than ten minutes about failing her mid-term exam in mathematics. She sat down at her desk and stared at the pile of mathematics textbooks in front of her. Then she was distracted by the storm outside her window. a different storm though to the storm in her mind. She had always been top in her class in English and Computer Science, but mathematics was an entirely different story. This shadow hung over her like a never ending storm, threatening to ruin her dream of a future in the computer science at university. Sometimes, she even longed for the end-of-year exam to prove her efforts.
She opened her notebook to a page filled with half-finished equations (方程式). “Why can’t I get this?” she thought, frustration welling up inside her. Her teachers had high expectations for her, especially after her excellent performance in her other subjects. But just the word, “mathematics,” made her tremble inside.
You can, if you think you can, Janice thought of her father’s words and repeated to herself. She tried to study, but when she would open a textbook, only to find herself picking up her phone and looking through social media for hours. “I’m rubbish at math.” Janice whispered.
Janice’s father came sitting down beside her. “Yes, we know you are rubbish at maths. but one day you will tell me you ‘were’ rubbish at maths once.” he said quietly, and with feeling. “Janice, you’ve always been a fighter. Remember what I told you? You can, if you think you can. It’s not just about believing it; it is about you wanting to believe it, it’s also about proving it to yourself. You just have to take that first step toward believing you can do this.”
“You’ve got a sharp mind, Janice.” her teacher, Mr. Thompson, said one day after she finally solved a particularly tricky maths problem. “You just need to trust yourself.” Janice was starting to believe in her father’s words.

“What’s this?” Mateo said, pointing at a wooden box on the sidewalk. The sign on it said Little Free Library. “I’ve heard of those,” Mateo’s older sister, Luisa, said. “People build them and put books inside. Other people take the books they want and add ones they’ve already read.”
“I want to make something like that,” said Mateo. “For kids to trade books. Will you help me build one?” “Sure,” said Luisa. “I’ll ask Papa if we can use his tools.”
Mateo ran inside to collect books while Luisa talked to Papa. With Papa’s help, they built a wooden box. They put a door on it and attached the box to a post. Then they dug a hole in their front yard and lifted the post into the hole. Mateo arranged the books inside the box and closed the door. “Now I just have to wait,” he said.
Mateo ran outside three times that day to check. But each time, his books were the only ones inside.
For the next few days, Mateo kept checking the box, but his books were still there. He really wanted his idea to work, but it seemed that kids didn’t notice it or they didn’t want to share their books. A sinking sense of discouragement consumed him. The next two days, Mateo didn’t check the box.
“Aren’t you going to check your little library, Mateo?” Luisa asked. “Why bother?” he asked. Luisa shrugged. “Maybe someone decided to trade after all. You should look.”
Mateo trudged down the walkway to the box. He opened the door. His books were gone and new books filled the box. “It worked!” Mateo exclaimed.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Judy knew now what she would do to cheer her grandmother up. She searched through the box of cards until she found her grandmother’s recipe for pancakes — everyone’s favorite. Then, moving quietly so that she wouldn’t disturb her grandmother in the next room, she began to gather the ingredients and cook her first pancake. As the wonderful smell of fresh pancakes began to fill the kitchen, Judy smiled. She couldn’t cook any of the more complicated dishes, but pancakes were always a wonderful treat. There came a soft sound from the door to the kitchen. It was her grandmother.
Judy smiled at her grandmother, who was looking at the scene in surprise. “Cooking food for someone is a way to say I love you,” Judy chuckled but was shocked to see tears glistening in the corners of her grandmother’s eyes. Her grandmother hurried to reassure her these were tears of joy. As they sat down to enjoy their plates of pancakes together, her grandmother offered to teach Judy how to cook the rest of the elegant dishes in the recipe box. Cooking together is, after all, just as much of an expression of love as cooking for someone.

In a regional competition, Alex presented an outstanding performance for the first time.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】As time went by, Alex’s skills improved. He was happy that his fingers were flexible even if not so good as before. He began to have some confidence again. Now he expected to participate in local piano competitions, facing tough competitors. Despite multiple losses in the early competitions, Alex didn’t give up. With the teacher’s continuous encouragement and help, he analyzed his performances, learned from his mistakes, and kept improving his skills. He began to explore composition, pouring his emotions into melodies. Finally, his hard work paid off.
In a regional competition, Alex presented an outstanding performance for the first time. It was so outstanding that it made him win the first place. Nobody would believe this success should come from a person who suffered severe hurt in his right hand. All of the audience was absorbed in his music, and tears of joy streamed down his face as he took the stage to receive the award. This was just the beginning. Alex’s fame gradually spread, and he was invited to perform in more significant concerts. Without his teacher’s encouragement, he wouldn’t have transformed his pain into a new path to success.

【答案】参考范文:
Mr Brown was attracted by the painting. “who painted this?”Mr Brown asked the vendor. After knowing Sophia’s address , he set off for her apartment. By sunset, he stood at Sophia’s doorstep , holding the painting. “This,” he said, pointing to the girl’s hopeful smile, “is art that speaks to the soul.” Mr Brown asked Sophia if she had any other pieces. Sophia brought out all her works. After seeing them, he praised Sophia highly. He proposed to take all her paintings and told her that he wanted to use them to hold an exhibition. Sophia agreed without hesitation.
Mr Brown took Sophia’s paintings and arranged a gallery exhibition in the city. Crowds gathered around her paintings, and their eyes widened with wonder. Some newspapers called her “the painter of hope”. The exhibition changed Sophia’s life. She began teaching free art classes in a studio for children who, like her former self, believed dreams were too heavy to carry. Sophia’s story reminds us that courage isn’t about waiting for storms to pass, but it’s about learning to paint in the rain. We should believe every brushstroke of persistence and every color of hope can turn ordinary struggles into extraordinary masterpieces.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

With that thought, Leo hurried home and picked up his pencil.

On the day of the competition, Leo submitted his poster with repeated revisions.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
With that thought, Leo hurried home and picked up his pencil. All through the night, he worked — sketching, erasing, and redrawing, completely absorbed in the moment. The paper became messy, covered with uneven lines. However, so eager was Leo to express his concern for the planet that he no longer cared about the poster’s appearance. He sketched a tired Earth sitting alone in a park, holding a cardboard sign that read “I’m doing my best. Are you?” Around it, he drew scenes from his own life like garbage on sidewalks and factories in the distance. Though the drawings lacked technical perfection, they were real. And that, Leo thought, might just be enough.
On the day of the competition, Leo submitted his poster with repeated revisions. So powerful was its message that students who usually walked past without interest stopped to look. Many were moved, not by how the poster looked, but by what it said. The judges recognized its emotional weight too, awarding it the “Best Impact Award”. Hung at the school entrance, the poster sparked genuine conversations. It was the message that stayed in their minds. From that day on, Leo understood something he had never believed before: Truth can be more powerful than perfection.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

As the weeks progressed, the kids remained focused. They followed the rules with no complaints and seemed to thrive on the discipline demanded of them. Each morning they sat attention, ready for warm-ups, learned, practiced, rehearsed and went over and over the songs to be sung in the contest. I was amazed at the driving force that kept pushing them on. The courage they had shown from day one overwhelmed me, changing something within myself. No more did I hesitate, but make every effort to teach them. With the passage of time, the kids were making steady and remarkable improvements, which was beyond my expectations. (90w)
When the contest day finally arrived, the kids felt ready to take on the world! They mounted the stairs, smiles of confidence spreading on their faces. Their singing sounded good. The entire audience broke into loud applause the instant they finished their songs. My heart swelled with pride for this little group. After what seemed a century, the results were posted. There was our name at the very top! All around kids were squealing and embracing. Warm tears wet my cheeks. And I was surrounded by kids who had a dream—kids who refused to give up—kids who taught me to never doubt the possibility of success for any student or any class ever again. (95w)

【答案】
And when I looked over at Ollie, he was doing the same thing! “This is the worst!” he whispered as he wiggled. “I feel like I’ m covered with a million mosquito bites.” “Me too,” I whispered back. “I wanted to get out of this costume right away!” But after exchanging a look with each other, we still hesitated since the result of the “creative” contest had not been announced and we were afraid that what we did before would make no sense. Overwhelmed by the nervousness and tolerating the strong itchy feelings, we just kept wiggling around, with our “leaves” trembling uncontrollably.
At that moment, Mr. Lee, the host of this year’s Halloween costume contest, called for everyone’s attention. “The winners of our ‘Be Creative’ costume contest are these two magnificent trees!” he announced excitedly with a beaming face. “Fabulous work!” he added and praised that they especially liked the little dance that made it look as if our leaves were rustling in the wind. The great news was, we actually won the contest! The not-so-great news came when we found out why we were so itchy — one of the many kinds of leaves we gathered turned out to be poison oak! What an unforgettable Halloween costume contest!

He got in and told the driver to drop him off at the hospital. “Alright, sir!” the driver replied and continued driving. They didn’t talk much in the car when Carl suddenly realized he left his wallet at home. “Sir, you don’t have to pay me. All the trips I make to the hospital are free!” the driver said.
Carl was astonished. “Free trips to the hospital? But why?” “When I was little, I had seizures, and a driver drove me to the hospital for free and saved my life. His kindness inspired me, so I do the same!” Carl felt lighter and happier. “What’s your name?” he asked the driver, and tears rose to his eyes when the driver said, “TYLER.” Carl spoke no more, wiping tears of joy as they proceeded to the hospital.

【答案】参考范文:
As Anne put on the Guardian Companion, Hemesh explained how it worked. He reassured her that it would help keep her safe. With a mixture of curiosity and skepticism, Anne agreed to give it a try. The device fit comfortably on her wrist. Hemesh walked his grandmother through the features, showing her how to use the panic button. Anne’s eyes lit up with a glimmer of hope, and for the first time since her diagnosis, she felt a sense of regained independence.
In the next few weeks, the device made a difference to Anne and her family. Not only did it provide a sense of security for Anne, but it also relieved the constant worry for her loved ones. The device brought peace of mind to the entire family, knowing that Anne was protected even when they couldn’t be by her side. Hemesh’s creation had truly transformed dementia care, and he found himself on a new mission to make the device accessible to as many people as possible, ensuring that no one had to face the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease alone.

I was a little scared, imagining where my dad could be and wondering if I would see him again. A couple of minutes later, my dad appeared, worried. At the sight of us, he was in relief. I ran to my dad and hugged him as hard as I could.
Then we went to the roller coasters. When it slowly moved, my stomach felt like it had a thousand butterflies in it, but gradually I became used to it. As it sped up, people screamed loudly all the time. Certainly I was also thrilled. Sometimes I couldn’t open my eyes as it rushed up and down. At this time my heart seemed to jump out of my breast. The ride was so adventurous that I grasped the safety belt firmly. Sweat rolled down my face. It was real fun to have a ride, and I couldn’t wait to have a try again.

“Perfect.”
Henry had a plan.

【答案】范文
Customers cheered Henry’s idea. Besides Mrs. Burke who longed for a babysitter and Mr. Simon who desired a large audience for his concert, Henry also collected six other neighbors appealing and needs, including Mr Grady who yearned for his children’s coming back for a short reunion. Information in hand, Henry knocked at Mr. Trotta’s door and pleaded for his support in publishing his first Oak Street News, who approved almost immediately. Soon, Henry’s tabloid was in circulation, which he cheerfully delivered from door to door as before.
Henry typed the news, mimeographed purple copies, and delivered the first Tree Streets News on Saturday. Neigh bons applauded the idea of sharing their needs in a communal newspaper, which really addressed their immediate concern in a practical and efficient way. As Mrs Burke successfully found an ideal babysitter, Mr Simon secured a large following for his concert and Mr Grady who happily reunited with his kids. Henry realized. from his deep heart, that The Gazette was far from gone in this TV era, but transformed into Oak Street News that connected, bonded and tied the Oak neighbors in a cory fabric.

【答案】 At first, John hesitated, unsure of how to help. Nervous but excited, he was afraid of expressing his ideas, yet eager to engage. However, as the group began discussing the project, he found himself knowing how to solve the problems other struggled with. Then bravely he talked with group members and his insights were invaluable to the team. Gradually, his classmates started to take notice of his talents and began asking for his ideas. Seeing the joyful expressions on his classmates’ faces, John started to feel less isolated and a wave of confidence swept over him.
At the end of the project, John formed new connections with his classmates. They invited him to join more group activities, and he no longer felt so distant. Instead, he became more outgoing and started participating actively in class. This newfound sense of belonging and encouragement gave him the confidence to open more. Finally, John realized that his journey from loneliness to friendship taught him the importance of taking the first step confidently. Sometimes, all it takes us is someone who supports and encourages you.

【答案】One possible version:
The fire was spreading fast, and Jase shook with fear. “Mom! Dad!” he shouted as he rushed upstairs to wake up his twin sisters. Milly sat up, blinking sleepily and ran downstairs with him, but Rosie was asleep, so he carried her in his arms, put his sisters in the truck and then hared off to his parents’ room, screaming at them. The couple was startled awake and called 911. Soon, the firefighters arrived and sprang into action. The fire was extinguished at length. While fighters performed their duties desperately, Jase could barely take his eyes off the “heroes”.
One of the firefighters patted Jase’s shoulder and said, “Good job!” Jase smiled back at him and uttered brimming with confidence, “Thank you, sir. I will become a real hero like you someday.” As the fighters left, Jase gazed after them with admiration. In the following years, he went to extraordinary lengths to pursue his childhood dream. And well, today, Jase has helped several families from such tragic events, and he is indeed a hero, a firefighter. Sometimes, he looks back at the “firetruck” and feels proud of how far he has come.

【答案】 Janice began to put her heart and soul into mathematics. She made a detailed study plan, setting aside specific hours each day for math. Whenever she felt like reaching for her phone, she would recall her father’s words and Mr. Thompson’s encouragement. She dedicated herself to working through piles of practice problems, and gradually, the previously confusing equations started to make sense. She also joined a study group with classmates who were also struggling with math, and they motivated each other. With every small success, her confidence grew.
The end-of-year exam finally came. Janice entered the exam room feeling a mix of nervousness and determination. She took a deep breath and focused on the questions. As she worked through the paper, she found that the knowledge she had painstakingly built up over the months was coming to her aid. As it turned out, she passed the math exam with flying colors. She ran home, eager to share the news with her father, finally able to say, “I was rubbish at maths once.”

【答案】
Just then, his next-door neighbor Julianne walked up carrying two books. “What worked?” she asked. Mateo grinned, pointing at the box brimming with new titles. “Our Little Free Library! Kids finally traded books!” Julianne’s eyes lit up. “That’s so cool! I brought these,” she said, placing a mystery novel and a comic book inside. “I read them last week and thought others might like them.” Mateo thanked her, asking if she’d tell her friends. “Of course!” she promised. As Julianne skipped away, Mateo noticed a handwritten note tucked beside the books: “Thanks for sharing! — A kid who loves stories.” He realized the library wasn’t just about books — it was about connecting people.
Mateo ran over to Luisa and gave her a big hug. “You were right! The library does work!” he exclaimed. Luisa laughed, patting his shoulder. “Told you patience pays off. Want to leave a sign explaining how it works?” Mateo nodded eagerly. They crafted a colorful poster explaining the rules: “Take a book, leave a book. Share your favorites!” By sunset, more kids gathered, chatting about their favorite stories. That night, Mateo wrote in his journal: “Today, I learned that good ideas take time — and a little help from friends — to bloom.” The Little Free Library wasn’t just a box anymore; it was a tiny world where kindness grew.
