They are waiting, eager for the moment when students will participate in a one-of-a-kind program called Spark. The meeting will pair students with volunteer apprentice (学徒) teachers. Lawyers, hair stylists, and software developers will meet up with students who have selected their occupations as the ones they would most like to learn about. Spark apprenticeships provide workplace experiences that bring economically disadvantaged teens into contact with a world they have probably only imagined. Nationally, some 30 percent of US high school students drop out. While improved curricula (课程), better teaching, and modern equipment may be part of the solution, “you have to have the relevance,” says Mr. Balme of his six-year-old Spark program. The gap between those worlds—one of limited expectations and hardship, the other of success and prosperity—hit Balme one day when he was volunteering as a science teacher at a public school in Philadelphia. He was also studying at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. The public school was in bad shape, with a high dropout rate. While walking back to Wharton, Balme realized he was “seeing all the resources, and yet these kids had no idea what was right there all around them.” That’s when everything fell into place. The problem and the solution were right next to each other. In 2004, he and Melia Dicker founded Spark. Apprenticeships are “not rocket science,” says Holly Depatie, Spark board chair. But other coaching programs, such as Boys and Girls Clubs of America, while pairing youngsters with adults, don’t specifically target learning about jobs. So far, Spark has created more than 700 apprenticeships in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. 24. How does Spark help the students? A. By offering hands-on experiences. B. By updating teaching equipment. C. By financing young apprentices. D. By improving school curricula. 25. What is the major drive for Balme to set up Spark? A. The dropout rate of US high schools. B. The prosperity in famous universities. C. The expectation of disadvantaged teens. D. The imbalance in educational resources. 26. Which word best describes Balme? A. Tolerant. B. Grateful. C. Observant. D. Modest. 27. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph? A. To justify similar programs. B. To tackle Spark’s challenge. C. To show Spark’s difference. D. To criticize current situations. C A newly described species of tardigrades, also known as water bears, is giving scientists insights into what makes these tiny creatures so resistant to radiation. 高二英语 第 5 页 共 10 页 Tardigrades, mostly less than l millimeter in length with their sausage-shaped bodies and four pairs of short, unjointed legs, have long interested scientists with their ability to withstand extreme conditions, including radiation. There are around 1,500 known tardigrade species, but only a handful are well-studied. Now, Lingqiang Zhang, a biologist at the Beijing Institute of Lifeomics, and his coworkers have sequenced (测序) the genetic group of a species new to science, and revealed some secrets of their radiation-resisting powers. Around six years ago, Zhang and his coworkers ventured into Funiu Mountain in China’s Henan province to collect moss (苔藓) samples. Back in the laboratory and under the microscope, they identified a previously undocumented species of tardigrade, which they named Hypsibius henanensis. When the researchers exposed H. henanensis to radiation levels of 200 and 2,000 grays— far beyond what would be survivable for humans—they found one of the genes, called TRIDI, edits a protein that helps to repair double-strand breaks in DNA by gathering specialized proteins at sites of damage. “This is a new gene that, to my knowledge, no one was studying,” says Bob Goldstein, a cell biologist at the University of North Carolina. The researchers also estimate that 0.5—3.1% of the tardigrade’s genes were acquired from other organisms through a process known as horizontal gene transfer. A gene called DODA1, which seems to have been acquired from bacteria, enables tardigrades to produce betalains, which can mop up some of the harmful reactive chemicals that radiation causes to form inside cells. The researchers believe their insights could be used to help protect astronauts from radiation during space missions, clean up nuclear pollution or improve cancer treatment. “We are still lacking knowledge of different tardigrade species out there. These animals have “a source of protectants that will probably keep pouring out more that will be useful and interesting to understand,” says Goldstein. 28. What makes tardigrades so appealing to scientists? A. Their survival ability. B. Their odd appearance. C. Their species diversity. D. Their large population. 29. What can TRIDI in tardigrades do? A. Produce protective substances. B. Facilitate protein exchanges. C. Acquire external genes. D. Repair damaged DNA. 30. What does the underlined phrase “mop up” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Distribute. B. Remove. C. Mirror. D. Activate. 31. Which of the following can be a suitable title? A. Tardigrades: The Reemerging Species B. Unlocking Tardigrades’ Radiation Defense C. Discovering New Tardigrade Species in China D. Tardigrades: Tiny Giants with Ancient Origins 高二英语 第 6 页 共 10 页 D Each year, the world loses about 10 million hectares of forest—an area about the size of Iceland—because of cutting down trees. At that rate, some scientists predict the world’s forests could disappear in 100 to 200 years. To handle it, now researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have pioneered a technique to generate wood-like plant materials in a lab. This makes it possible to “grow” a wooden product without cutting down trees. In the lab, the researchers first take cells from the leaves of a young plant. These cells are cultured in liquid medium for two days, and then moved to another medium which contains nutrients and two different hormones (激素). By adjusting the hormone levels, the researchers can tune the physical and mechanical qualities of the cells. Next, the researchers use a 3D printer to shape the cell-based material, and let the shaped material grow in the dark for three months. Finally, the researchers dehydrate (脱水) the material, and then evaluate its qualities. They found that lower hormone levels lead to plant materials with more rounded, open cells of lower density (密度), while higher hormone levels contribute to the growth of plant materials with smaller but denser cell structures. Lower or higher density of cell structures makes the plant materials softer or more rigid, helping the materials grow with different wood-like characteristics. What’s more, it’s to be noted that the research process is about 100 times faster than the time it takes for a tree to grow to maturity! Research of this kind is ground-breaking. “This work demonstrates the great power of a technology,” says lead researcher, Jeffrey Berenstain. “The real opportunity here is to be at its best with what you use and how you use it. This technology can be tuned to meet the requirements you give about shapes, sizes, rigidity, and forms. It enables us to ‘grow’ any wooden product in a way that traditional agricultural methods can’t achieve.” 32. Why do researchers at MIT perform the research? A. To grow more trees. B. To reduce tree losses. C. To protect plant diversity. D. To predict forest disappearance. 33. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the lab research? A. Its scientific evidence. B. Its theoretical basis. C. Its usual difficulties. D. Its key procedures. 34. What does the finding suggest about the plant materials? A. They are better than naturally grown plants. B. Their cells’ shapes mainly rely on their density. C. Their rigidity is affected by the hormone levels. D. Their growth speed determines their characteristics. 35. Why is the research ground-breaking according to Berenstain? A. It uses new biological materials in lab experiments. B. It revolutionizes the way to make wooden products. C. It challenges traditional scientific theories in forestry. D. It has a significant impact on worldwide plant growth. 高二英语 第 7 页 共 10 页 第二节 (共 5 小题;每小题 2.5 分,满分 12.5 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为 多余选项。 The Power of Peers Do birds of a feather really flock together? People do tend to choose friends who are similar to them. Many behaviors spread socially. Activities in certain brain areas change when other people are around. 36 You can use the power of social relationships to gain healthier habits — and motivate others to do the same. 37 Teens are especially responsive to peer influence. At the same time, the reward system in the teen brain becomes extra sensitive. Teens are just learning to explore the social world. Understanding other people’s values and being influenced by them are important parts of socializing. A research shows that even just having another peer around can change the reward response in the brain and also the risk-taking tendencies of teenagers. Some people seem to be more easily influenced than others and more sensitive to feeling included or excluded by others. _________ But it’s also a time that peer influence can help teens thrive if it gets them more involved with their community or helps them learn behaviors to get along with others. It’s the quality of friendships—not quantity—that really makes the difference. Friendships you feel you want to let go of may be low quality. 39 High quality friendships provide understanding, support, and recognition of your self-worth. These types of friendships are more steady and satisfying. Spending time with friends can be especially helpful for people. Noticing that our behavior is influenced by other people, we can be intentional and try to focus on the people who are doing the things we want to get into ourselves. 40 A. Adolescence is such a risky period. B. That can affect what you choose to do. C. Peer pressure can sometimes lead to competition. D. People care about what peers think across all different age groups. E. They are linked to poor academic performance and behavioral issues. F. Sharing your healthy habits could also make a real difference to others. G. The number of friends you have determines your level of social influence. 第三部分 英语知识运用 (共两节,满分 30分) 第一节:完型填空(共 15 小题,每小题 1 分,满分 15 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项A、B、C和D中,选出可以填入空 白处的最佳选项。 When I first built my website 3 years ago, I had no idea what I was doing. Out of the doghouse came the mother dog, who ran down the passage of his shop, followed by five tiny balls of fur. One puppy was moving slowly and fell behind. In no time the little boy picked out the slow puppy and asked, “What’s wrong with that little dog?” The shop owner explained that the vet had examined the little puppy and had discovered that one of his back legs was injured. He would always walk slowly and with difficulty. He would be lame (瘸的). Hearing what the shop owner had said, the little boy became excited, “That is the little puppy I want to buy.” The shop owner said, “No, you don’t want to buy that little dog. If you really want him, I’ll just give him to you.” The little boy got quite upset. He looked straight into the shop owner’s eyes and said, “I don’t want you to give him to me. That little dog is worth every bit as much as all the other dogs and I’ll pay full price. As a matter of fact, I’ll give you $2.37 right now, and 50 cents a month until I have him paid for.” 注意: 1. 续写词数应 150 左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。 The shop owner shook his head and declined the little boy. We hereby appeal to every one of you to participate actively. Your active involvement will make this event a success! The Student Union 第二节 读后续写 One possible version; The shop owner shook his head and declined the little boy. He said, “You really don’t need 2 to buy this little dog. He is never going to be able to run, jump and play with you like the other puppies.” The little boy stood his ground, determined to pay for the limping puppy. He looked at the store owner with unwavering confidence and replied, “He may not be perfect, but that doesn’t make him any less deserving of a loving home.” All of a sudden, the little boy reached down and rolled up one leg of his pants. A badly twisted, crippled left leg supported by a big metal brace came into sight. The boy looked up at the shop owner and softly replied, “Well, I don’t run so well myself, and the little puppy will need someone who understands!” Tears sparkling in eyes, the owner handed over the lame puppy to the boy. It always feels so great to have someone who understands you and cares for you heart and soul. 听力原文 第一节 听下面 5 段对话。每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的 A、B、C 三个选项中选出最 佳选项。听完每段对话后,你都有 10 秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题。每 段对话仅读一遍。 Text1 W: Wow. W: Usually the last Saturday of the month at seven thirty in the evening. Is that too late for you? M: No, I think that’s okay. What do you talk about in the group? W: Well, every month we choose a new book and then during the next meeting we discuss it. M: What books have you read? W: Quite a lot. Recently we have read the Beautiful Mind and the Great Gatsby. M: How much should I pay? W: 800 dollars a month? M: What are included? W: Only gas is included. You have to pay for the electricity and water. M: Ah, can you cut down a little? I’ve searched a lot on the Internet and there wasn’t so much high rent. W: As you can see, the apartment has recently been redecorated and completely furnished. M: Well, that’s it. When can I move in? W: Let me see. Today is Wednesday. In three days. If you like. M: That’s great. Text 9 M: Why did you get home so late, Enya? I was worried sick! W: I had everything timed perfectly. I sat in the coffee shop, waiting for Bus 35. It is supposed to leave at 4:45 sharp. I take it every day at that time because it arrives at the Waterloo Station just in time for me to catch Bus 15. M: And you lost track of time, didn’t you? W: No, Ken, not this time. I was at the bus stop on time, and I was picking up my bag and getting to my feet at 4:35. I was two feet from the bus when it suddenly left! M: Ten minutes early? W: Yes. So, I had to wait thirty minutes for the next bus. By then, there were no more buses leaving from Waterloo. M: How did you get here, then? W: I walked. Can you imagine—me, a young woman, walking in the dark for an hour by alone? M: And in this neighborhood! Next time, please call me. That was so dangerous. W: I know. I’m lucky to be alive. What’s wrong with the public transportation in this city? Don’t they care about people who can’t afford cars? M: We should write a letter to our local officials. W: And the newspaper! Text 10 The desire to stay cool is, of course, nothing new. The ancient Egyptians and Romans employed various techniques to cool down their buildings from the outside heat. Some people have even claimed that the first air conditioning device was invented in ancient Egypt. The ancient Egyptians would hang wet plants outside their windows, and when the air came into the house, it would be cooled by the cool water drops on the plants. 5 The Romans understood that if they could bring cold water under their houses, then the temperature inside would fall. And if we really stretch the meaning of the phrase “air conditioning”, then hand fans have been used since the very beginning of the history. People realized that they could move air by waving something and it would cool them down for a while. The Chinese inventor Ding Huan went a step further in the second century and invented a fan that could go around, similar to fans we might see today, although it was powered by servants. That’s all for today. Please stay tuned for more updates.
