Growing up, my older sister always told me that going to high school allowed me to have more fun. But on the night before the first day, going to sleep was difficult. I was up all night thinking about how the day would go. What if my friends aren’t in any of my classes? What if I get made fun of? What will people think of when they first see me?
The next morning, as I started walking towards the gate of the school I had butterflies in my stomach. There were a lot of students. As I looked around, I started to notice the familiar (熟悉的) faces of my friends who went to primary school with me. For some reason, I would get very nervous when someone new got close to me.
The one thing I was most nervous about was walking in late to one of my classes. Guess what? That was exactly what happened. Going to the first period was simple because luckily, other students were helping us find our classes. Not to mention, I ended up having that class with a couple of friends.
As I made my way down the halls to get to my second-period class, we had about five minutes to get to our classes. Finally, I ended up getting lost and coming to class ten minutes after the bell had rung, which resulted in the class looking at me when I walked in. I felt self-conscious. Everyone had already taken their seats so I rushed to sit down as well. However, I had to sit with someone new. It took me a while to begin talking to him but once I did, things became easier because I was able to ask for help when needed.
In high school I was going to be meeting new people in unfamiliar places, getting used to a new environment, and receiving more responsibilities. But I’m still looking forward to it.
4. How did the author feel before his first day?
A. He was too nervous to sleep. B. He missed his old friends badly.
C. He felt certain about his future life. D. He was worried about meeting new teachers.
5. What did the author do at the gate of the school?
A He asked others about the campus. B. He communicated with new friends.
C. He asked for leave because of his illness. D. He saw his old friends in primary school.
6. What happened when the author was on his way to his first class?
A. He lost his way B. He was offered help.
C. He made a new friend. D. He ran into his class teacher.
7. What does the underlined word “self-conscious” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Angry. B. Embarrassed. C. Excited. D. Comfortable.

One debate about chicken eggs is why white eggs usually cost more than brown ones. Some people think white eggs are more nutritious (有营养的). Is that true? According to Sherman Hickman, the director of community outreach and education for Hickman’s Family Farms, it’s first important to know why chickens have different egg colors.
Jesse LaFlamme is the CEO of Pete and Gerry’s Organic Egg. She says, the chicken breed (品种) decides whether or not hens have pigment genes, the natural chemical that results in a colored shell. Although all eggs start out white in color, shell color can change from white to brown and even blue in some rare breeds. An interesting way to know what color eggs a hen lays is to look at the color of its ear feathers (羽毛), LaFlamme says. Breeds such as the Leghorn chickens lay white eggs, while Orpington chickens lay brown eggs and Ameraucana chickens produce blue eggs.
Hickman notes that the Leghorn breed is a popular choice for farmers because it lays more eggs. Hens that produce colored eggshells, however, usually are larger and require more feed and energy to create that painted shells. Since those breeds cost more to feed, their eggs are more expensive.
Although eggs sometimes look different and are priced differently, it’s impossible to know their nutrition according to shell color alone. “Choosing between brown and white eggs is a matter of personal preference,” Malina Linkas Malkani, media spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, says. “But it’s important for people to know that the color of the eggshell is related to the breed of the hen, not the egg’s nutrition, quality or shell thickness.” What does affect the nutrition is the specific food the hen eats, according to Malkani.
8. What decides the color of eggshells?
A. Hens’ breed. B. Eggs’ nutrition. C. Shell thickness. D. Hens’ ear feathers.
9. Why are eggs of Leghorn chickens more expensive?
A. They lay rare eggs. B. Raising them costs more.
C. Their eggshells are white. D. Their eggs are more nutritious.
10. What does Malina Linkas Malkani try to explain?
A. Why eggs are priced differently.
B. What color of eggs people like best.
C. What decides the nutrition of eggs.
D. Why people like to eat eggs.
11. Which column can this passage probably be found in a newspaper?
A. Film & Entertainment B. Nature & Tour
C. Architecture & design D. Science & Life

According to the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), six red wolf pups (幼崽) were found in North Carolina’s Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge last week. That’s great news for endangered red wolves, and marks the first time these pups have been born in the wild since 2020.
Long ago, red wolves lived all through the US Southeast. But as the wolves were hunted, and as more and more land was taken over for cities, roads and farms, the wolves began to die out.
In 1973, a new law called the Endangered Species Act was passed, which was designed to protect animals that were in danger of dying out, like red wolves. At the time, there were only about 17 red wolves remaining in the wild.14 of those wolves were caught and fed by researchers to protect them. Then, the FWS conducted a program called the Red Wolf Recovery Program. But by 1980, red wolves were believed to have been extinct in the wild.
Luckily, the wolves did well under people’s care, and their numbers continued to grow. Soon the FWS began releasing red wolves back into the wild. Those wolves with tracking collars spread out, paired up, and began to have pups. By 2012, red wolf numbers had hit a new high point of about 120 wolves in the wild. The program’s success led to many other programs aimed at bringing animals back from the edge of extinction.
Sadly, though, wild red wolf numbers began to drop again. Some wolves were shot and others were hit by cars. As the number of adults fell. the number of pups being born also began to drop. In 2020, a total of four pups were born in the wild. In 2021, 2022 and 2023, no wild pups were born at all.
So the news that six pups hatched in the wild this year is a huge boost. But the good news isn’t an accident.
12. How did the FWS protect red wolves?
A. It made a new law to protect them. B. It kept them in the wild.
C. It moved them into a new habitat. D. It carried out a recovery program.
13. What is partly responsible for the reduced number of red wolves in recent years? ?
A. The lack of food B. The worsened weather.
C. The illegal hunting. D. The loss of forests.
14. What will be talked about in the following paragraph?
A. The accidents that happened this year. B. The effort the FWS has made.
C. The wishes from the researchers. D. The health condition of the pups.
15. What can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Endangered Species Act Taking Effect B. Red Wolf Pups Decreasing in the US
C. Endangered Red Wolf Pups Born in the Wild D. Future Faced by Endangered Red Wolves

One noon Mark knocked at the door, saying, “Take the letter.” Then, a little girl answered from inside, “I’m coming.” But after 3 minutes, no one came. Mark, the postman, said again, “Please hurry. I have to go to the next place.”
The girl, Jane, replied, “Sir, put the letter under the door. I’m coming. But it’ll take more time.” The old postman replied, “No, I’m waiting. It’s a registered letter. So your signature is needed.”
After a long time, the door open. Mark was angry and was about to shout at the girl. But when the door opened, he was shocked to see a little girl who had no legs. He immediately had great pity for her. He quietly gave her the letter, took her signature and left.
The little girl often lived alone in her house. Her mother wasn’t in this world. And her father used to work far away. He wasn’t rich and could not buy the girl prostheses(假肢). To take care of her, her aunt stayed with her every night. But she lived alone during the day.
In about two months, whenever mail came, Mark would knock and call Jane. Then he’d wait patiently at the door. Gradually, interaction and attachment(依恋) grew between them. And they learned more about each other.
Jane noticed Mark used to come barefoot(赤脚) to deliver mail. The rainy season came. One day, when Mark left after delivering the letter, his footprints were left on the wet soil. Jane came out with a piece of paper, put it on the footprints and took down the picture of his feet. 【答案】When it comes to friendship, a lovely girl named Amy comes into my mind. I am so lucky to have such a good friend. It was her company and encouragement that drove my loneliness and gave me warmth in high school. What’s more, with her help, I made great progress in English.
As far as I am concerned, true friendship is largely based on supporting each other, which can stand the test of time. However, don’t always take friendship for granted. If we really value our friends, we should cherish their presence and spend time maintaining the relationship.
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】 Days later, Jane heard the old postman knock on her door. Smiling, she opened the door and took the mail from Mark. Then she handed him a box, saying, “This is a gift for you.” Mark opened the box, seeing a pair of new shoes. He couldn’t believe Jane was concerned about him. Mark was moved to tears. He thanked her and left. “She saw me barefoot and gave me new shoes. But how will I be able to give her legs?” he thought to himself.
“I can’t give her legs, but I can give her prostheses,” Mark suddenly thought, and decided to buy. He quickly went back home and took all the money he had saved for years. Then he returned to Jane’s house. Mark offered to take Jane to town to buy prostheses. Jane couldn’t believe her ears, but she declined. Mark was so determined that eventually she agreed to go. When Jane wore prostheses and walked around, they were so glad about each other’s gift, which brought great warmth and hope.
