It’s an old saying that most overnight successes have actually been hard at work for years, and perhaps never is that more true than in the case of Mel Robbins. Her star has been on the rise for a long time: her podcast (播客) has been flying high in the charts since she launched it in 2022, and she’s been writing best-sellers for the last 10 years.
Since the launch of her new book, The Let Them Theory: A Life-Changing Tool That Millions of People Can’t Stop Talking About, she’s reached a very high level. It’s been hard to find much media in the last few weeks that hasn’t mentioned her. Articles, podcasts, TV shows: you name it, the world is talking about Mel Robbins.
The new book is inspired by a phrase her younger daughter used when Robbins was being a “typical mom” at her son’s high school dancing party. “I was trying to arrange everything and it upset everyone in the process. I didn’t realize it until my daughter said ‘Mom, you’re being annoying. Just let them eat where they want; let them ruin their sneakers; let them do what they want.’ That was the moment that actually hit my nervous system. And I then said to myself, ‘Let them’ and I felt my shoulders drop.”
This aspect of trying to give up controlling others makes up the central principle of the book. The Let Them Theory is a step-by-step guide on how to stop letting other people’s opinions and judgment impact your life. The theory, she wrote, will “set you free from the exhausting cycle of trying to manage everything and everyone around you.”
“I feel humbled by the fact that people are reading my new book in a moment in history where they have no time. People are making time to read something that could help them,” she said in an interview.
24. What do we know about Mel Robbins from the first two paragraphs?
A. She has been widely reported recently. B. She becomes famous overnight by luck.
C. She is known to people as a film star. D. She released her first best-seller in 2022.
25. Why did Robbins’ daughter say “Let them” to her?
A. To make her annoyed on purpose. B. To inspire her for a new book.
C. To stop her controlling behavior. D. To help her son grow mature.
26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Comments of the readers. B. Influences of Mel Robbins.
C. The interpretation of the book. D. The foundation of the theory.
27. How did Robbins feel about the success of her new book?
A. Unbelievable. B. Grateful. C. Surprised. D. Cautious.

Baleen whales, like humpbacks (座头鲸), rely on singing to attract mates. But if killer whales hear their songs, these predators (掠食者) can find the singer and attack. A scientist discovered that some species, such as Bryde’s whales, stay safe by calling at deep, low frequencies that killer whales can’t hear. New studies suggest that traits found throughout the animal kingdom may have guided the development of human speech.
Male humpback whales produce sounds in a complex sequence, known as a song. A song can be up to 30 minutes long and may be repeated for hours. As with human language, the whales’ songs are culturally transmitted, meaning they are learned from others. An international team of scientists studied recordings collected over 80 years near the island of New Caledonia in the Pacific Ocean. Because humpback whale songs are made up of various sounds, the scientists created codes to describe different combinations of sounds. By figuring out which sounds often occurred together, they could identify combinations in whale songs that served a purpose similar to words in human speech.
When the researchers analyzed the whale songs using this method, they found that the songs followed a pattern, called Zipf’s law of frequency, that is also found in human language. Zipf’s law says that the most common word in a language is used twice as much as the second most common word, three times as much as the third most common word, and so on. For example, in English, the word “the” is used twice as often as “of” and three times as often as “and”.
Meanwhile, a separate study from Stony Brook University found more similarities between people and whales. The research found that the songs of humpbacks and blue whales use short words more often than longer ones, as is the case with human language. “Taken together, our studies suggest that humpback whale song has evolved to be more efficient and easier to learn,” said the study’s author, Mason Youngblood.
28. How do Bryde’s whales avoid being detected by predators?
A. By imitating specific sounds of human language.
B. By creating confusing sounds to mislead predators.
C. By producing particular sounds at high frequencies.
D. By making sounds below predators’ hearing range.
29. What do we know about humpback whales’ songs?
A. They are repeated hourly without change. B. They are acquired through mutual learning.
C. They follow a simple sequence of sounds. D. They consist of fixed sound combinations.
30. By Zipf’s law, if the most common word appears 100 times, the fourth common word appears ______.
A. 25 times. B. 33 times. C. 50 times. D. 100 times.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. How Whales Avoid Attacks. B. How Whales Use Short Words.
C. How Whale Songs Transmit Culture. D. How Whale Songs Mirror Human Speech.

Fungi (真菌) may possess their own intelligence, including the ability to remember, make decisions, and recognize basic shapes, according to a new study. The study could lead to a deeper understanding of different forms of intelligence.
A team of researchers at Tohoku University and Nagaoka College in Japan set out to learn more about fungi by studying their mycelium (菌丝体), a system of thin strands (缕) which grow underground and function like roots. For the study, the team worked with a type of fungus called Phanerochaete velutina, which feeds on wood. They laid out wood blocks serving as food for the fungus in two different formations — a circle and a cross — to see if that affected how the mycelium would grow. The blocks had empty spaces between them.
Normally, fungal mycelium grow outward in all directions from a center point. In this study, the mycelium started out that way, growing outward from each block. But eventually they changed direction based on the block arrangements. In the circle of blocks, the mycelium started growing evenly around each individual block but eventually stopped growing inside the circle. Instead, it grew on the outside of the circle. The researchers think the mycelium did this because it knew there was no benefit to growing inward. With the cross formation, more mycelia grew on the four outermost blocks than anywhere else. Although the team isn’t exactly sure why, they think this happened because the mycelium used those blocks as a good starting point to search for food.
The team said that in both cases, the fungi were identifying the spots with the most nutrients. To do this, the strands of mycelium were communicating, processing that information, and changing their behavior.
The researchers compared the system to the way the human brain uses a network of nerve connections to send messages. “You’d be surprised at just how much fungi are capable of,” said Yu Fukasawa, lead author of the study. “Quite frankly, their ability to solve problems compared to humans is mind-blowing.”
32. Why were the blocks arranged in different formations?
A. To observe how fungi break down wood. B. To check how much space mycelium needs.
C. To test if formations affect mycelium growth. D. To examine which formation fungi like more.
33. How did fungal mycelium grow in the study?
A. It grew outwards in all directions all the time. B. It grew in the direction of more food nutrients.
C. It grew more in the center of cross formation. D. It grew quite evenly inside the circle of blocks.
34. What does the underlined word “mind-blowing” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Astonishing. B. Confusing. C. Predictable. D. Unidentifiable.
35. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To clarify the definition of intelligence. B. To compare different forms of intelligence.
C. To give an account of fungi and mycelium. D. To uncover the cognitive abilities of fungi.

Autumn is a special time to enjoy the outdoors when the weather is cool and crisp for absorbing the sights and sounds of nature. ____36____ Here are some ways to get started.
Go for a walk, bike, or hike. The easiest way to get closer to nature is to simply step outside. Gather family to go for a walk or bike ride in your neighborhood or a local park. In parts of the US where the weather is milder, you may be able to plant leafy crops like spinach, broccoli, and kale through December. Speak with your local plant nursery about what you can plant at this time of year in your area. ____39____

As the assistant stage manager for our school’s play Annie, I was tasked with finding the perfect dog to play Sandy, the lovable homeless dog who becomes Annie’s loyal companion. We had tested two dogs, but neither had the charm and discipline for the role.
One afternoon, my friend Jose suggested we visit a local shelter. “Mrs. Karst has a dog who might be perfect,” he said. “His name’s Farley, and he’s a former therapy dog. He’s great with kids, and he’s used to crowds.” I was skeptical but agreed to meet him.
As soon as I saw Farley, my heart sank. He was a three-legged dog. How could this dog, missing a front leg, play Sandy, who’s supposed to rush across the stage and lie sweetly at Annie’s feet? I hesitated, worrying the audience would focus on his disability instead of the story. But Mrs. Karst noticed my doubt. “Watch him,” she said gently.
Farley ran over, wagging his tail. His movements were steady, his eyes looked calm and smart. When I knelt, he sat politely, turning his head a bit as if asking, “What’s next?” I noticed how he balanced effortlessly, using his strong hind legs to compensate for the missing front one. There was a dignity in the way he walked, a quiet perseverance that felt exactly like Sandy’s spirit — someone who’s faced hardship but remains hopeful.
“Mr. Loom will never go for this,” I murmured, but Mrs. Karst just smiled. “Let Farley have a try. That’s all I ask.”
The next day, I brought Farley to rehearsal (排练), nervous about the director’s reaction. Mr. Loom took one look at Farley and lit up. “Now that’s a star,” he said, clapping his hands. “Look at those eyes — wise and kind”. I was ready for him to say no, but instead, Mr. Loom knelt to scratch Farley’s ears. “Sandy’s a survivor. This dog’s story only makes his character richer. Who says a homeless dog can’t have a past? Maybe he lost his leg in a brave escape from the dog shelter. The audience will adore him.” During rehearsal, Farley proved Mr. Loom right.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

W: Hey Jamie, have you noticed how much technology is changing schools these days?
M: Absolutely! There are some new apps designed to help students learn. Back when we were in school, all we had were textbooks and chalkboards. Now, students even have AI tutors.
W: That’s true. Do you think these tools actually make a difference?
M: Definitely. For example, there are apps now that can break down complex concepts into bite-sized pieces and even offer problems with instant feedback, which I think are the coolest parts.
W: But I also wonder if technology might distract students rather than help them.
M: There’s always a risk of distractions, like social media or games. But I think if used correctly, technology can enhance learning. It’s all about finding the right balance.
W: Agreed. Overall, I think the potential of technology in education is huge. It’s not just about new tools, but also about new ways of thinking and learning.

18. What did Bohlin do in his first job?
A. He taught at a college. B. He produced cars. C. He designed aircraft.
19. When did Bohlin join the car manufacturer?
A. In 1942. B. In 1958. C. In 1959.
20. Which country was the first to introduce car seat belt laws?
A. Japan. B. Australia. C. France.
C 19. B 20. B
Hi, my talk today is about an invention, the modern car seat belt. The inventor of the modern car seat belt was a Swedish man called Nils Bohlin. Bohlin had trained as a mechanical engineer at college before gaining his first employment as an aircraft designer. He did well, so he was invited to join a car manufacturing company as a safety engineer.
Bohlin has been working on improving seats and seat belts for planes since starting his working life in 1942. After joining the car manufacturer in 1958, he spent the following 12 months developing his ideas for cars, and then a car featuring Bohlin’s creation on both front seats was introduced, making it the earliest example of a vehicle with modern seat belts.
However, it took many years for them to become widely accepted. Japan made it a rule that everyone must wear seat belts in their cars across the whole country in 1971. A year earlier, two of the six states in Australia had introduced similar rules. France was the first European nation to create seat belt laws several years later. It’s incredible to think that some investment in research and development in the manufacturing industry has had such a huge global impact.

I didn’t realize it until my daughter said, ‘Mom, you’re being annoying.
B. Grateful. C. Surprised. D. Cautious.
A 25. C 26. C 27. B

It’s been hard to find much media in the last few weeks that hasn’t mentioned her. Articles, podcasts, TV shows: you name it, the world is talking about Mel Robbins. 故选A。
根据第三段中““I was trying to arrange everything and it upset everyone in the process. I didn’t realize it until my daughter said, ‘Mom, you’re being annoying. Just let them eat where they want; let them ruin their sneakers; let them do what they want.’ That was the moment that actually hit my nervous system. And I then said to myself, ‘Let them’ and I felt my shoulders drop.”
根据第四段中“This aspect of trying to give up controlling others makes up the central principle of the book. The Let Them Theory is a step-by-step guide on how to stop letting other people’s opinions and judgment impact your life.
C How Whale Songs Transmit Culture. D. How Whale Songs Mirror Human Speech.
D 29. B 30. A 31. D
根据第一段中“A scientist discovered that some species, such as Bryde’s whales, stay safe by calling at deep, low frequencies that killer whales can’t hear.(一位科学家发现,像布氏鲸这样的一些物种,通过发出虎鲸听不到的深沉、低频的声音来保持安全)”可知,布氏鲸通过发出低于掠食者听力范围的声音来避免被掠食者发现。
根据第二段中“As with human language, the whales’ songs are culturally transmitted, meaning they are learned from others.(与人类语言一样,鲸鱼的歌声也是通过文化传播的,这意味着它们是从其他鲸鱼那里学来的)”可知,座头鲸的歌声是通过相互学习获得的。
根据第三段中“Zipf’s law says that the most common word in a language is used twice as much as the second most common word, three times as much as the third most common word, and so on.(齐普夫定律指出,一种语言中最常见的词的使用频率是第二常见词的两倍,是第三常见词的三倍,以此类推)”可知,根据齐普夫定律,如果最常见的词出现100次,那么第四常见的词应该出现100 ÷ 4 = 25次。故选A。
D
【答案】32 C 33. B 34. A 35. D
根据第二段的句子“For the study, the team worked with a type of fungus called Phanerochaete velutina, which feeds on wood. They laid out wood blocks serving as food for the fungus in two different formations — a circle and a cross — to see if that affected how the mycelium would grow.(为了研究,团队使用了一种名为Phanerochaete velutina的真菌,它以木材为食。他们将木块以两种不同的形状——圆形和十字形——摆放,以观察这是否会影响菌丝体的生长。)”可知,木块被摆成不同的形状是为了测试形状是否影响菌丝体的生长。故选C项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的句子“Normally, fungal mycelium grow outward in all directions from a center point. Although the team isn’t exactly sure why, they think this happened because the mycelium used those blocks as a good starting point to search for food.(通常情况下,真菌菌丝会从中心点向四周辐射生长。
根据上文的句子“You’d be surprised at just how much fungi are capable of(你会惊讶于真菌的能力)”和“Quite frankly, their ability to solve problems compared to humans(坦率地说,它们解决问题的能力与人类相比……)” 故选A项。
根据文章内容,特别是第一段“Fungi (真菌) may possess their own intelligence, including the ability to remember, make decisions, and recognize basic shapes, according to a new study. The study could lead to a deeper understanding of different forms of intelligence.(一项新的研究表明,真菌可能拥有自己的智力,包括记忆、决策和识别基本形状的能力。这项研究可能会让我们对不同形式的智力有更深入的了解。)”可知,文章主要介绍了真菌可能具备的智能,包括记忆、决策和识别基本形状的能力,并通过实验展示了真菌如何通过菌丝体的生长来识别营养丰富的区域。因此,作者的目的是揭示真菌的认知能力。故选D项。

Recently, Career Day at our school offered me a precious chance to experience my favorite job — being a teacher. Standing in front of the classroom, I had an English lesson with colorful PPTs and small word games.
During the class, I taught the students basic English phrases. Their curious eyes and active participation touched me deeply. When a shy girl finally raised her hand to answer my question, an indescribable sense of achievement filled me.

Loom right.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A month of hard practice later, the opening night finally came. The moment Farley ran quickly onto the stage on three legs, astonishment overtook the audience. However, he moved so smoothly as if he had perfected this act through endless rehearsals. Then he gently rubbed his face against Annie’s hand and lay down at her feet. His vivid portrayal of Sandy on stage was so impressive that the audience couldn’t help breaking into thunderous applause. In the front row, a girl in a wheelchair watched the play with tears in her eyes.
After the performance, the girl in a wheelchair gave us a card. It read, “It was such an inspiring play. Farley made me believe that limitations can be turned into strengths. I used to feel uneasy about my disability, but watching Sandy’s courage on stage made me realize that it’s our imperfections that make us perfect in our own ways.” The card was a powerful reminder that true perfection lies not in flawlessness but in embracing our uniqueness. Just like Farley, with his missing leg, he had embodied the spirit of Sandy and touched countless hearts.
