W: Of course! And I’m so happy we were both invited to help look after the park.
M: Me too. We’ve done quite a lot in our roles as volunteers there. Our background as scientists really helps our work.
W: It certainly does. I’ve enjoyed getting involved in various projects about birds.
M: Yeah. I’ve also loved walking among the trees. It’s amazing how the newly planted ones have stopped growing in height, but grown in width recently so that they spread out their branches.
W: Yeah…But I’m worried that tourists ignore the fact that the park is a conservation area. There is so much rubbish dropped everywhere. But maybe it’s because it’s a well-known tourist attraction. It’s difficult to ask everyone to stop using the trees as a playground.
M: Mm, you’re right. Anyway, tomorrow I’m going to help out with making whatever’s still needed there. It’s great we got the shelters done so that tourists can go birdwatching and still stay dry.
W: And those plant pots we made will be useful, too.
M: Yeah, now I’d like to get on with making some bird boxes——there just aren’t quite enough in the park at the moment.
W: I’ll come with you!

C. They looked at a sculpture.
15. What did the man like most in the museum?
A. The gold deer. B. The huge flowers. C. The Roman statues.

17. How did the woman’s teacher help her with her sculpture?
A. By showing what to observe.
B. By deciding a subject for her.
C. By listing details to be considered.
A 15. C 16. C 17. A
M: It was an interesting presentation by Professor Letitia, wasn’t it?
W: Yes, practical demonstrations certainly helped, but only up to a point. Personally, I prefer visiting galleries. It is exciting to look at the sculpture.
M: I know what you mean. I really enjoyed the visit to the museum the other day. I particularly admired those Roman statues though the gold deer were impressive and the huge flowers were so special. Copying them, or doing something even slightly similar will be too much for me.
W: Absolutely! There are so many different things we need to study more. We’ve done plenty of work on decorating surfaces. I also liked that lesson on shaping muscles. But it’s using tools that I need more guidance on.
M: Have you decided what type of sculpture you’re going to do?
W: Well, the teacher was talking about choosing a subject we’re truly interested in. So I might do an animal of some kind.
M: That sounds difficult.
W: Well, yes. The teacher talked to me about what I needed to observe carefully before starting work on a sculpture like that. And she said the greatest attention should be paid to its movement. There may be all sorts of other details to consider too, but not right at the start.

In 2018, the Czech government proposed a project to create a dam on a river southwest of Prague to revive the local ecosystem and protect the species that inhabit the river. However, bureaucracy (官僚主义) held back the project. But a colony of beavers (河狸), who do not care about paperwork, got to work. That is, they simply used stones, wood and mud to build a dam on the river. Because there were no labor or material costs, the beavers have saved the Czech government $1.2 million USD.
These ecosystem engineers build dams with three simple materials: wood, mud and stones. They place stones at the base of the dams and then add tree trunks and branches. The mud acts as cement (水泥) and settles the construction. These natural dams are so well built that they can last for many years, allowing the surrounding ecosystem to flourish.
Some people consider these animals a nuisance, as they bite on trees and can change the environment quickly. However, here are a few ways they benefit the environment. Firstly, Beaver dams encourage plant growth and peat formation, which trap carbon, preventing it from being released into the air. Secondly, Beaver dams can filter water almost twice as efficiently as human-built treatment plants. Besides, Beaver dams help to control runoff from heavy rain, thus reducing the risk of flash flooding. And as you might expect, a moist area is less likely to burn. So, beaver dams can also help limit forest fires.
Hunting nearly drove this species to extinction. But thanks to recent conservation efforts, beavers have been successfully reintroduced to several areas in Europe, including the Czech Republic. Gerhard Schwab, a beaver expert for the Federal Nature Conservation Association, returned delighted from a field study of be aver habitats and enthusiastically announced the discovery of a valley in Belgium filled with newly formed ponds and streams. This is a clear example of the beaver’s ability to transform its environment. It seems that we still have a lot to learn from these natural engineers!
24. How do the beavers build their dam?
A. By relying only on costly cement.
B. By combining materials from nature.
C. By following human engineering plans.
D. By using modern construction equipment.
25. What environmental benefit do beavers bring about?
A. Controlling rainfall.
B. Increasing fish species.
C. Reducing forest fire risks.
D. Releasing carbon into the air.
26. Which factor contributes to beavers’ reintroduction?
A. The transformation of ecosystem.
B. The disappearance of human dams.
C. The construction of dams across Europe.
D. The conservation efforts to protect them.
27. What is the article mainly about?
A. Beavers are excellent ecosystem engineers.
B. Animals can revive rivers through their labor.
C. Beavers saved the Czech government one million.
D. Natural dams are more cost-efficient than human dams.
B 25. C 26. D 27. A

People may say they prefer a short story written by a human over one composed by artificial intelligence, yet most still invest the same amount of time and money reading both stories regardless of whether it is labeled as AI-generated. That was the main finding of a study we conducted recently to test whether this preference of humans over AI actually translates into consumer behavior.
To investigate, we asked ChatGPT 4 to generate a short story in the style of the famous fiction author Jason Brown. We then recruited over 650 people and offered them $3.50 to read and assess the AI-generated story. Only half the participants were told that the story was written by AI, while the other half was misled into believing it was the work of Jason Brown. After reading the first half of the Al-generated story, participants were asked to rate the quality of the work along various dimensions, such as whether they found it predictable, emotionally engaging, evocative and so on. We also measured participants’ willingness to pay in order to read to the end of the story in two ways: how much study compensation they’d be willing to give up, and how much time they’d agree to spend transcribing (抄录) some text we gave them.
So, were there differences between the two groups?
To begin with, the group that knew the story was AI-generated had a much more negative assessment of the work. Such results are largely in keeping with an emerging but growing body of research that shows bias against AI in areas like visual art, music and poetry. Nevertheless, participants were ready to spend the same, amount of money and time to finish reading the story whether or not it was labeled as AI. When asked afterward, almost 40% of participants said they would have paid less if the same story was written by AI versus a human, highlighting that many are not aware of the discrepancy between their subjective assessments and actual choices.
Attitudes toward AI are still forming. Future research could investigate whether there will be a backlash (抵制) against AI-generated creative works. A related question is whether the market will divide, where some consumers will be willing to pay more based on the process of creation, while others may be interested only in the product.
28. What is the main finding of the study?
A. Human authors will soon be replaced by AI.
B. AI-generated stories are more creative than human ones.
C. Labeling stories as AI-generated affects readers’ choices.
D. AI-generated stories are received despite people’s preference.
29. How was the study conducted?
A. By analyzing causes. B. By sampling randomly.
C. By making comparison. D. By observing constantly.
30. What does the underlined word “discrepancy” probably mean?
A. Error. B. Agreement. C. Mismatch. D. Calculation.
31. What will future research probably focus on?
A. Exploring customer preferences.
B. Developing AI’s storytelling ability.
C. Removing bias against AI creativity.
D. Comparing AI and human writing styles.
D 29. C 30. C 31. A

根据第一段“People may say they prefer a short story written by a human over one composed by artificial intelligence, yet most still invest the same amount of time and money reading both stories regardless of whether it is labeled as AI-generated. That was the main finding of a study we conducted recently to test whether this preference of humans over AI actually translates into consumer behavior.
根据第二段“We then recruited over 650 people and offered them $3.50 to read and assess the AI-generated story. Only half the participants were told that the story was written by AI, while the other half was misled into believing it was the work of Jason Brown. (然后我们招募了650多人,并给他们3.5美元,让他们阅读并评估这篇由人工智能生成的故事。只有一半的参与者被告知这篇故事是由人工智能创作的,而另一半参与者则被误导,以为这是杰森・布朗的作品。)”可知,该研究是通过对比两组参与者的反应来进行的。故选C。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段“Nevertheless, participants were ready to spend the same, amount of money and time to finish reading the story whether or not it was labeled as AI. When asked afterward, almost 40% of participants said they would have paid less if the same story was written by AI versus a human, highlighting that many are not aware of the discrepancy between their subjective assessments and actual choices.
根据最后一段中“Future research could investigate whether there will be a backlash (抵制) against AI-generated creative works. A related question is whether the market will divide, where some consumers will be willing to pay more based on the process of creation, while others may be interested only in the product. (未来的研究可以调查是否会有针对人工智能生成创意作品的抵制。一个相关的问题是,市场是否会分化,一些消费者愿意根据创作过程支付更多的费用,而另一些消费者可能只对产品感兴趣。)”可知,未来的研究可能会集中在探索消费者的偏好上。故选A。
One of my friends has a remarkable power to make the people around him happy. He does this simply through the power of his personality. He is extroverted, diligent, agreeable — all the traits attract a lot of friends. ____32____ He is excited about his work and speaks with passion about his family. He has a great zest for the common objects of life. If you want to lean into life more enthusiastically like him, there are some interventions worth trying.
Use the “as if” principle.
____33____ When you want to withdraw from social activities, act as if you were enthusiastic instead. Tell yourself, “I am going to get into this right now.” This will establish new cognitive habits that gradually become more automatic.
____34____
Norman Vincent Peale, a popular self-improvement writer, shares advice in one of his books: “Always be glad when there is trouble on the earth, for it indicates great things are about to happen.” Successful businessmen routinely use re-framing after setbacks by asking questions such as “What did I learn from this?” or something similar.
Pick your friends.
One of the best ways to become more enthusiastic is to hang around enthusiastic people. By doing this, you’ll take advantage of “emotional infection”. If you tend to withdraw, it may be easy to move toward people who do the same. But consciously doing the opposite can help you borrow a better personality trait from those around you. ____35____
Having a passion for life doesn’t mean that you can never be alone. In Henry David’s Walden, his description of waking up alone in a cabin by Walden Pond is a portrait of enthusiasm. “Every morning was a cheerful invitation to make my life of equal simplicity, with nature herself.” ____36____ You can make your head into your own cozy cabin, and make life inside it a little brighter.
A. Raise doubts about setbacks.
B. Redefine challenges as chances.
C. Look for companions who lean into life with excitement.
D. Faking enthusiasm is fairly straightforward and effective.
E. Likewise, you can choose to treat everything around as a pleasant welcome.
F. But I find there’s one characteristic of his especially winning: his enthusiasm.
G. If people act more extroverted in general, they do succeed and become happier.
F 33. D 34. B 35. C 36. E

上文“Having a passion for life doesn’t mean that you can never be alone. In Henry David’s Walden, his description of waking up alone in a cabin by Walden Pond is a portrait of enthusiasm. “Every morning was a cheerful invitation to make my life of equal simplicity, with nature herself.”

Life is a journey filled with obstacles, and I faced a significant one when tackling a challenging science project last year. It seemed insurmountable, leaving me feeling lost and anxious.
That’s when Naomi, my classmate, stepped in. She guided me through the maze of the project, breaking it down into smaller, more manageable tasks. Together, we delved into the library’s resources, our discussions sparking insights that illuminated the path ahead. Eventually, she helped me develop resilience and ultimately led to the successful completion of the project.

On a cloudy Saturday morning, Molly’s husband, a keen skier, had set out early for a day on the slopes of Crystal Mountain. Molly, then 52, was catching up on her work when her cellphone rang. She didn’t recognize the number, so she ignored it. Then came a voicemail from the Crystal Mountain Volunteer Ski Patrol: her husband had been killed in a skiing accident.
“My life was completely turned upside down. Everything that I knew, that I counted on, was just blown apart,” she said. She remembered saying aloud, in total shock. “What do I do?”
When Carla, one of Molly’s closest friends, heard the awful news, she knew right away that she wanted to help. The first week after the accident, Carla was at Molly’s house every day. She helped plan the funeral and organize the outpouring of support from friends, neighbors. “But one thing I learned is that the flurry of activity when someone dies lasts about two weeks.” she said. “But then, naturally, everybody has to go back to real life.”
She knew Molly’s sister, Kathy, had come to stay with her. But Carla wanted something more lasting and structured, something that would brighten Molly’s days through the difficult year ahead. “I thought, what if I found a few more people and created a rolling calendar, where every day of the month, there would be someone committed to checking on her?” Carla said. “That way, nobody would be overtaxed, because you only had to do it 12 times in a year.”
She brought the idea to Molly to make sure she was comfortable with it, and to make it clear that none of the women wanted Molly to feel pressured to socialize every day. Then Carla brainstormed the contacts she had, and crafted an email to 31 women, and the “Calendar girls” were born.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Molly’s calendar girls showed up for her, day in and day out.

That ongoing support made all the difference to Molly.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Molly’s calendar girls showed up for her, day in and day out. Nichole brought a hot meal with flowers. Toni would meet Molly for a walk. And Rachel liked to leave a card on her porch. Each day, a new person would reach out for Molly with a gesture of kindness. When Molly looked back, she felt both sadness and gratitude. “I hadn’t had huge losses before, so I didn’t know the value of having people’s support,” she reflected. “Carla is one of those people with a really huge heart.”
That ongoing support made all the difference to Molly. Though still struggling, she was doing well somehow. She was back in school, studying for a degree in psychology, working towards supporting others through life’s tough times. And she also started another calendar for a friend. “When someone dies, people often don’t know what to do or say,” she said. “But I always tell people to do something. It’s OK to sit with them or walk a dog. Companionship can get people through their grieving days and know they are not alone.”
