May is a wonderful time to travel and don’t worry about choosing a place to stay! Here is the introduction to some of your top-notch options.
St. James Hotel, Red Wing
This four-story 1875 Italianate hotel with 66 rooms named for riverboats offers surprises such as organ pipes in its original lobby and an 1890s piano. A third of the rooms include Mississippi River views or you can watch for bald eagles from its balconies with an antique design. Take a self-guided walking tour along the river and look for traces of the local old companies, including Red Wing Pottery.
Alma, Minneapolis
Guests should check into this seven-room boutique hotel — created by Alex and Margo Roberts — hungry. Heady aroma (香气) coax visitors inside with lemon ricotta cookies, sourdough bread from Café Alma and roasted duck. After a satisfying meal, guests can take leisurely strolls along the woodland, breathing in the crisp, fresh air.
Grand View Lodge, Nisswa
Flower-lined pathways have connected Gull Lake and the postcard-perfect Grand View Lodge in the heart of Minnesota’s Brainerd Lakes region for more than a century. The lobby’s wood floors creak with history, a fireplace crackles, and guests dine on walleye (大眼鲈鱼) and wild rice on the balcony. It’s the best option for a family of parents, grandparents and children to enjoy its first-class services, including a free guided tour.
The Hotel Landing, Wayzata
The elegant balcony on this 92-room hotel catches cool breezes from Lake Minnetonka for a love date night in well-to-do Wayzata, 15-minute walk west of Minneapolis. The restaurant serves Midwestern delicacies with East Coast influences, such as walleye and lobster-and-crab cakes. The hotel also emphasizes providing guests with free guided fishing trips, including winter ice fishing.

When Loki, the golden retriever (寻回犬), entered our lives five years ago, we anticipated that he would assume the roles of tail-wagging family guardian and personal trainer.
Time has proved that not only does Loki fulfil all those functions, he’s also the family’s ultra-punctual alarm clock as well as stand-up comedian. But without doubt his most unexpected contribution to our household is that of peacemaker.
Now, Loki is the spiritual leader of our family. When we become irritated, such as when my wife mentions my weight, he always makes us stop arguing. Loki possesses a reliable warning system. As soon as our voices rise, he demands the restoration of harmony, first leaning his head on the leg of the instigator of the argument and staring at him or her with pleading eyes. If he fails, he will climb up and lick his or her neck affectionately, which usually works. Therefore, if we want to have a good argument, we have no choice but to leave home.
After 28 years of marriage, time hasn’t eased our hot temper, but Loki’s influence has. He has imposed his personality on us. He has also improved my wellbeing. When attached to a blood pressure monitor, I’ve watched my numbers head in the right direction when Loki lies next to me on the sofa. Scientists say stroking a dog can reduce blood pressure by as much as 10 percent.
As usual, the other day, just after daybreak, I found myself lying on the edge of the bed, pushed aside by Loki, which was lying on a down comforter, snoring (打鼾) intermittently. And it suddenly dawned on me that I spent more time sleeping alongside Loki than my wife.
Although Loki has the ability to mediate, he is particularly unable to convince Tracey to let me cross the threshold (门槛) at night due to my snoring. My weight is undoubtedly the cause. It’s time for him to step back up to his primary role, a personal trainer. Come on, Loki. Let’s go for a run!
4. What was Loki originally expected to serve as according to the author?
A. A peacemaker. B. An alarm clock. C. A spiritual leader. D. A family guardian.
5. What might be Loki’s way to end the argument between the couple?
A. Raising his voice. B. Barking at the couple.
C. Interacting with the instigator. D. Running away from home.
6. What can be inferred from the last three paragraphs?
A. The author blames his weight problem on Loki.
B. Tracey doesn’t allow the author to go out at night.
C. Loki has a positive influence on the author’s health.
D. The author prefers sleeping alongside Loki to his wife.
7. What’s the tone of the passage?
A. Relaxing. B. Critical. C. Serious. D. Ironic.
D 5. C 6. C 7. A

根据第一段中“When Loki, the golden retriever (寻回犬), entered our lives five years ago, we anticipated that he would assume the roles of tail wagging family guardian and personal trainer. (五年前,金毛寻回犬洛基走进我们的生活时,我们期望它能担当摇着尾巴的家庭守护者和私人健身教练的角色)”可知,作者最初期望洛基担当家庭守护者的角色。故选D项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“As soon as our voices rise, he demands the restoration of harmony, first leaning his head on the leg of the instigator of the argument and staring at him or her with pleading eyes. If he fails, he will climb up and lick his or her neck affectionately, which usually works. (我们一开始提高嗓门,它就要求恢复和谐,首先把它的头靠在挑起争论者的腿上,用恳求的眼神盯着他或她。如果这招不管用,它就会爬上去亲切地舔他或她的脖子,这通常很管用)”可知,洛基结束这对夫妇争论的方式是与挑起争论者互动。故选C项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“He has also improved my wellbeing. When attached to a blood pressure monitor, I’ve watched my numbers head in the right direction when Loki lies next to me on the sofa. Scientists say stroking a dog can reduce blood pressure by as much as 10 percent. (它也改善了我的健康状况。当我连接上血压监测仪,当洛基躺在沙发上我旁边时,我看到我的血压数值朝着好的方向发展。科学家说抚摸狗可以使血压降低多达10%)”和最后一段中“It’s time for him to step back up to his primary role, a personal trainer. Come on, Loki. Let’s go for a run!(是时候让他回到他的主要角色,一个私人教练。来吧,洛基。我们去跑步吧!)”可知,洛基对作者的健康有积极影响。故选C项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Time has proved that not only does Loki fulfil all those functions, he’s also the family’s ultra punctual alarm clock as well as stand up comedian. (时间证明,洛基不仅履行了所有这些职责,它还是家里超级准时的闹钟和脱口秀喜剧演员)”以及倒数第二段“As usual, the other day, just after daybreak, I found myself lying on the edge of the bed, pushed aside by Loki, which was lying on a down comforter, snoring (打鼾) intermittently. And it suddenly dawned on me that I spent more time sleeping alongside Loki than my wife. (前几天,像往常一样,天刚破晓,我发现自己被挤到了床边,而洛基正躺在羽绒被上,时不时地打着呼噜。我突然意识到,我和洛基一起睡觉的时间比和我妻子在一起的时间还多)”可知,作者用轻松诙谐的语言描述洛基,整体氛围轻松。所以文章的语气是轻松的。故选A项。
C
It was obvious with Pinocchio. Every time he told a lie his nose grew longer. But for the rest of us in real life, the result of telling lies isn’t so evident. Is it possible that there are unseen consequences to dishonesty?
Since lies are carried by speech, and speech originates in the brain, is it possible that telling lies results in changes in the brain that are not outwardly observable? Psychologists Julia Lee and Ashley Hardin wanted to find out.
Drs. Lee and Hardin set up a series of studies to explore the question of dishonesty, with 250 pairs of individuals. In each pair, one was assigned the task of either lying or telling the truth. The other member of the pair was instructed to evaluate the emotions of the lying or truth-telling partner. Each of the partners was then assigned the task of evaluating the emotions of the other partner.
The research found that subjects who were asked to be dishonest were significantly worse at detecting the emotional state of their partners than those who told the truth. Surprisingly, the small, seemingly unimportant moments of dishonesty clouded an individual’s ability to read the emotions of another individual later on.
To determine how well the participants could read other people’s emotions, the researchers then had the subjects watch a series of short video clips. In the clips, actors expressed a wide range of emotions in their facial expressions, voices, and body languages. The participants were then asked to identify the emotional state of the actors. Once again, across all the experimental studies, the researchers consistently found that those who were tempted to, and likely did lie, ended up performing worse on the test of empathetic accuracy than those who didn’t lie.
We live in a world where businesses, social life, and personal relationships depend on the ability of individuals to interact well with other people. And to interact with them we often need to be able to determine their emotions. As most of us learned in kindergarten: it’s important to tell the truth!
8. What is the purpose of the studies?
A. To explain the Pinocchio Effect. B. To explore the motive for lying.
C. To teach people how to detect lies. D. To test if lying causes brain changes.
9. What were the participants asked to do in the studies?
A. To make faces. B. To learn body languages.
C. To rate others’ performances. D. To identify different emotions.
10. What does the underlined word “clouded” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Cleared. B. Improved. C. Weakened. D. Monitored.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The necessity of being honest. B. The application of the study.
C. The reasons for telling lies. D. The complexity of social interaction.
D 9. D 10. C 11. A
根据第二段“Since lies are carried by speech, and speech originates in the brain, is it possible that telling lies results in changes in the brain that are not outwardly observable? Psychologists Julia Lee and Ashley Hardin wanted to find out.(既然谎言是通过言语传递,而言语又起源于大脑,那么说谎是否可能会导致大脑发生无法从外部观察到的变化?心理学家Julia Lee和Ashley Hardin想找出答案)”可知,研究的目的是测试说谎是否会导致大脑变化。故选D项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“To determine how well the participants could read other people’s emotions, the researchers then had the subjects watch a series of short video clips. In the clips, actors expressed a wide range of emotions in their facial expressions, voices, and body languages. The participants were then asked to identify the emotional state of the actors.(为了确定参与者解读他人情绪的能力如何,研究人员让受试者观看了一系列短视频片段。在片段中,演员们通过面部表情、声音和肢体语言表达了各种各样的情绪。然后,参与者被要求识别演员的情绪状态)”可知,参与者在研究中被要求识别不同的情绪。故选D项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中“The research found that subjects who were asked to be dishonest were significantly worse at detecting the emotional state of their partners than those who told the truth.(研究发现,被要求说谎的受试者在察觉其搭档的情绪状态方面明显比说实话的受试者差)”可知,说谎会削弱一个人解读他人情绪状态的能力。所以划线词所在句“Surprisingly, the small, seemingly unimportant moments of dishonesty clouded an individual’s ability to read the emotions of another individual later on.(令人惊讶的是,这些看似不重要的不诚实行为会clouded一个人日后解读他人情绪的能力)”中“clouded”的意思是“削弱”,与C项“Weakened”同义。
根据最后一段中“We live in a world where businesses, social life, and personal relationships depend on the ability of individuals to interact well with other people. And to interact with them we often need to be able to determine their emotions. As most of us learned in kindergarten: it’s important to tell the truth!(我们生活在一个商业、社交生活和个人关系都依赖于个人与他人良好互动能力的世界里。为了与他人互动,我们通常需要能够判断他们的情绪。正如我们大多数人在幼儿园学到的:说实话很重要!)”可知,最后一段主要讲了诚实的必要性。故选A项。
D
Even if you don’t worry that artificial intelligence (AI) will destroy the human race, you might concern that its fearsome appetite for electricity will destroy the environment. But the fear of disaster is unnecessary. In absolute terms, AI may be less energy-hungry than many people assume. Better still, AI can help decarbonise the industries that have proved hardest to clean up.
Consider AI’s appetite for energy first. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reckons that electricity consumption by data centres could as much as triple in the next five years. Even if energy usage soars, though, the base is still low. Data centres today account for about 1.5% of the world’s electricity consumption — and the vast majority of that is due to streaming, social media and online shopping, not AI. Moreover, some of AI’s electricity use will help with greening the economy. AI excels at identifying complex patterns, dealing with giant data sets and perfecting systems, all of which can help reduce emissions. AI is already helping improve the efficiency of electrical grids (电网), cut fuel use in shipping and spot otherwise invisible leaks of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
The task for policymakers and industry bosses is to maximize such benefits while minimizing the climate impacts. The first is to rethink how data centers operate. The IEA notes that being able to shift workloads between different data centers at different times could reduce strain and help balance energy grids. More flexible data centers would also be a better match for the intermittent power produced by renewables such as wind and solar.
Second, tech firms should hold themselves to their own environmental promises. Microsoft, for instance, aims to become “carbon negative” by 2030. A better approach would be for the tech firms to use the influence that their large demand for energy gives them to accelerate the decarbonisation of grids. They could help unblock the deployment (部署) of clean energy more widely by pushing for planning reform, and go further in supporting the development and expansion of alternative sources such as geothermal and nuclear power. Doubling down on such approaches would help transform AI from climate suspect to climate hero.
12. What can we learn about AI from the first paragraph?
A. It accelerates the end of human race. B. It consumes less energy than expected.
C. It slows the process of decarbonisation. D. It causes great harm to our environment.
13. How can AI contribute to reducing emissions?
A. By increasing the use of fossil fuels. B. By reducing the need for data centers.
C. By replacing traditional industries entirely. D. By processing massive data and enhancing systems.
14. What suggestion does the author give to tech companies?
A. Expand data centers. B. Promote cleaner energy.
C. Do further research. D. Raise funds for the grids.
15. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. AI’s use brings numerous economic benefits.
B. AI’s energy consumption raises great concern.
C. AI can play a role in addressing climate problems.
D. The rapid development of AI causes energy crisis.
B 13. D 14. B 15. C
根据文章第一段“Even if you don’t worry that artificial intelligence(AI) will destroy the human race, you might concern that its fearsome appetite for electricity will destroy the environment. But the fear of disaster is unnecessary. In absolute terms, AI may be less energy-hungry than many people assume. Better still, AI can help decarbonise the industries that have proved hardest to clean up.(即便你不担心人工智能会毁灭人类,你或许也会担心它对电力的巨大需求会破坏环境。但这种对灾难的担忧是没有必要的。从绝对意义上来说,人工智能对能源的需求可能比许多人认为的要少。更妙的是,人工智能能够帮助那些被证明最难实现清洁化的行业减少碳排放)”可知,对人工智能破坏环境的担忧是不必要的,从绝对意义上讲,人工智能对能源的需求可能比许多人认为的要少,即它消耗的能源比预期的少。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“AI excels at identifying complex patterns, dealing with giant data sets and perfecting systems, all of which can help reduce emissions.(人工智能擅长识别复杂的模式、处理庞大的数据集以及完善系统,所有这些都有助于减少排放)”可知,人工智能可以通过处理大量数据和完善系统来助力减排。
根据文章第四段“They could help unblock the deployment(部署)of clean energy more widely by pushing for planning reform, and go further in supporting the development and expansion of alternative sources such as geothermal and nuclear power.(它们可以通过推动规划改革来助力更广泛地部署清洁能源,并且进一步支持地热能和核能等替代能源的开发与推广)”可知,人工智能可以通过减少对数据中心的需求来减少排放。
All friendships, regardless of how long they enter our lives, serve a purpose. ____16____ We typically assume break-up shouldn’t hurt as much as a romantic break-up, but it does. Much like with romantic relationships, we often attach illusions to our friendships, and when they end, it’s the bursting of the illusion that can hurt the most.
It’s not nice to think about, but there comes a point in every person’s life where they outgrow someone they were previously close with. ____17____ At first, different life directions mean you stop hanging out as much; then they’re no longer the first person you go to with news; and before you know it your contact grows decreased, revolving primarily around birthdays or Christmas.
This natural shift doesn’t mean failure. ____18____ Our relationships merely outgrow the period they were formed in: childhood friends may no longer fit into or have anything in common, making it hard to relate to one another — and that is perfectly OK.
As painful as it may be to distance yourself from someone you once cherished, holding on usually becomes harder than letting go. If you don’t feel good when you’re together, then it’s likely time for things to come to a close. ____19____ If you would like to stop a friendship from being outgrown, you need to start making a concerted effort to consciously cultivate the bond you have. You can start by telling your friend how you are feeling and that you would like to work on mending the relationship. ____20____
A. It often happens slowly.
B. Therefore, friendships require cultivating.
C. However, it doesn’t mean saying goodbye forever.
D. It is simply a normal part of growing and changing.
E. Instead of expectations, focus on making agreements.
F. As is the case in all relationships, communication is key.
G. So it’s natural for us to feel painful when friendships do end.
G 17. A 18. D 19. C 20. F
上文“All friendships, regardless of how long they enter our lives, serve a purpose.(所有的友谊,不管存在多久,都是有意义的)”引出友谊价值,G选项“So it’s natural for us to feel painful when friendships do end.(因此,当友谊结束时,我们感到痛苦是很自然的)”通过“so”建立因果关系,因为友谊都是有意义的,所以友谊结束会带来痛苦,与后文“We typically assume break-up shouldn’t hurt as much as a romantic break-up, but it does.(我们通常认为友谊结束带来的伤痛应该不及一段浪漫恋情的破裂,但事实并非如此)”语意一致。故选G项。
上文“It’s not nice to think about, but there comes a point in every person’s life where they outgrow someone they were previously close with. (想到这个可能不太愉快,但每个人生命中都会迎来这样的时刻:你会渐渐与曾经亲密的人变得疏远)”提出人人都会经历与亲密的人之间的疏远,A选项“It often happens slowly(这通常是缓慢发生的)”通过“it”指代上文的疏远过程,引出下文具体描述疏远三个阶段:减少见面→不再优先分享→只剩节日问候,上下文逻辑连贯。故选A项。
上文“This natural shift doesn’t mean failure(这种自然转变不意味着失败)”否定消极认知,D选项“It is simply a normal part of growing and changing.(这只是成长和变化的正常部分)”通过“simply”承接转折,用“normal part”对应上文的“doesn’t mean failure”,共同确立积极观点。后文“childhood friends may no longer fit into or have anything in common, making it hard to relate to one another — and that is perfectly OK(儿时的朋友们可能不再合群或有任何共同点,这使得彼此之间很难相处——这完全没问题)”是该观点的具体例证。故选D项。
前文“If you don’t feel good when you’re together, then it’s likely time for things to come to a close.(如果你们在一起的时候感觉不舒服,那么很可能是时候结束了)”提出关系的结束,C选项“However, it doesn’t mean saying goodbye forever.(但并不意味着永别)”通过“however”实现语义转折,既承认结束的必要性,又避免绝对化,引出后文“If you would like to stop a friendship from being outgrown, you need to start making a concerted effort to consciously cultivate the bond you have.(若想避免友谊渐行渐远,就需要开始有意识地共同努力维系彼此的情谊)”提供的积极解决方案,与C项形成“结束非绝对→主动维系”的递进逻辑。故选C项。
前文“You can start by telling your friend how you are feeling and that you would like to work on mending the relationship. (你可以从告诉你的朋友你的感受开始,告诉他你想要修复你们的关系)”建议表达感受,F选项“As is the case in all relationships, communication is key.(正如所有关系,沟通是关键)”承接上文,强调沟通是关键,与前文观点一致。故选F项。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Will you do me a favor, Achenyo?” Mama called as she looked up from her weaving, a half-finished mat spread across her lap. In the corner were pots of dyes (染料) she’d use to paint the finished mats. “Will you fetch me some water for the dyes?” “Of course, Mama!” Achenyo picked up a clay pot as she slipped outside.
Achenyo, with the clay pot balanced on her head, made her way to the river. When she arrived at the water’s edge, she found a huge surprise. The river was gone! In its place was a blanket of dark green leaves dotted by lavender-colored (淡紫色的) flowers — water hyacinth (水葫芦).
“Oh no!” Achenyo cried, “The river is gone! There’s no water for drinking, cooking, or bathing! Mama won’t have water to mix the dye s for her mats.”
When the adults arrived at the riverbank, they shook their heads, sighing “They’ve struck again!” Last year, the rainy season brought an invasion of water hyacinths. The plants had covered the river and left no room for villagers to dip a pot to fetch water. There was no room to bathe or swim. Fishermen couldn’t cast their nets for fish. And now the water hyacinths were back.
“How could such a pretty plant cause such harm?” Achenyo wondered, “How will we get water?” Anyway, she joined the adults to step into the water among the broad, green leaves to pull hyacinths and threw them onto the riverbank. Worse still, the next day she found the river still covered by hyacinths as if no one had cleared the waterfront the day before. As a result, she, as well as the adults, again had to pull and throw hyacinths onto the riverbank.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
“What a pity to waste such pretty flowers,” Achenyo thought.

Then she picked some hyacinths with great excitement and dashed home.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 “What a pity to waste such pretty flowers,” Achenyo thought. As she continued to clear the hyacinths, an idea began to form in her mind. She remembered how Mama used natural materials to make dyes for her mats. Maybe these lavender colored flowers could be used as a dye! She carefully observed the flowers, imagining the beautiful colors they might create on the mats. She thought that if these hyacinths, which were causing so much trouble, could be turned into something useful, it would be a great solution.
Then she picked some hyacinths with great excitement and dashed home. She showed the flowers to Mama and explained her idea. Mama was a bit skeptical at first, but she decided to give it a try. They put the flowers into a pot and boiled them. As the water began to change color, a beautiful lavender purple hue emerged. Mama dipped a small piece of cloth into the pot, and when she took it out, it was dyed a lovely shade. Achenyo was overjoyed. From then on, they used the hyacinth flowers to dye the mats. The unique color attracted many customers, and the mats sold well. Not only did they solve the problem of the water hyacinths, but they also found a new way to make a living.

A. Raising his voice. B. Barking at the couple.
C. Interacting with the instigator. D. Running away from home.
6 What can be inferred from the last three paragraphs?
A. The author blames his weight problem on Loki.
B. Tracey doesn’t allow the author to go out at night.
C. Loki has a positive influence on the author’s health.
D. The author prefers sleeping alongside Loki to his wife.
7. What’s the tone of the passage?
A. Relaxing. B. Critical. C. Serious. D. Ironic.

Even if energy usage soars though, the base is still low.

C. However it doesn’t mean saying goodbye forever.
D. It is simply a normal part of growing and changing.
E. Instead of expectations, focus on making agreements.
F. As is the case in all relationships, communication is key.
G. So it’s natural for us to feel painful when friendships do end.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
“What a pity to waste such pretty flowers,” Achenyo thought.
