John Arrillaga Sr, the pioneering Silicon Valley developer, was one of Stanford’s greatest benefactors (捐助者), leaving a legacy literally built into every corner of campus.
Over decades, Arrillaga’s generous donations and hands-on efforts reshaped Stanford’s campus. Though best known for athletic facilities, his true impact extended far beyond. As his longtime friend John Etchemendy noted, “Hundreds of projects bear his mark, yet rarely his name.” Nowhere was this quiet dedication clearer than in the reconstruction of Stanford Stadium. He personally funded and oversaw every detail — from selecting palm trees to designing seats to mapping walkways — yet refused to put his name on it.
Born into a working-class family, young Arrillaga couldn’t afford a proper suit for his high school graduation, having to borrow an ill-fitting jacket with sleeves that barely reached his wrists. He unexpectedly attended Stanford on a basketball scholarship, working multiple campus jobs to make ends meet. After playing professionally in Spain, he returned to develop Silicon Valley offices during the tech boom, becoming a millionaire. True to his humble beginnings, he started repaying Stanford almost immediately after graduation — beginning with modest athletic department gifts that grew into historic donations exceeding $250 million. Through his scholarship programs, he’s helped over 300 students facing similar financial challenges.
One day, a young donor moved by Arrillaga’s generosity shared how witnessing the selfless giving had profoundly shaped his devotion to charitable work. Realizing the ripple (涟漪) effect of his actions through others, Arrillaga months later made a rare exception: he permitted his name to appear on just one building — not for personal distinction, but as a nod to the power of leading by example.
While his benefaction helped communities across Silicon Valley through donations to police stations, libraries, and other public spaces, his strongest ties always remained with Stanford University.
4. What was Arrillaga’s key role in the stadium reconstruction?
A. A full-project supporter. B. A stadium co-investor.
C. A landscape designer. D. A building material producer.
5. What motivated Arrillaga’s lifelong commitment to Stanford?
A. The millionaire lifestyle experience. B. The desire for public recognition.
C. The fate-changing scholarship. D. The business investment strategies.
6. Why did Arrillaga finally allow his name to appear on one building?
A. To accept praise from the public. B. To show the ripple effect of athletics.
C. To fulfill a request from his university. D. To inspire more charitable actions.
7. What does Arrillaga’s experience show?
A. Wealth necessitates public display. B. Silent impact outweighs visible recognition.
C. Humble beginnings can lead to fortunes. D. Athletic excellence drives social change.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. B

Scientists have developed a low-cost, durable, highly-sensitive robotic “skin” that can be added to robotic hands like a glove, enabling robots to sense information about their surroundings in a way that’s similar to humans.
Unlike most robotic touch systems, which use separate sensors for different types of touch, this electronic skin acts as one big sensor, making it more like human skin. Although not as sensitive as real skin, the robotic skin can sense signals from over 860,000 tiny pathways, allowing it to recognize different types of touches, pressure, temperature, and even damage — all in one material.
Electronic skins work by changing physical information — like pressure or temperature — into electronic signals. In most cases, different types of sensors are needed for different types of touch — one type of sensor to find pressure, another for temperature, and so on — which are then fixed into soft, flexible materials. However, the signals from these different sensors can impact each other, and the materials are easily damaged.
“Having different sensors for different types of touch leads to materials that are complex to make,” said lead author Dr David Hardman. “We wanted to develop a solution that can notice multiple types of touch at once, but in a single material.” Their solution uses one type of sensor that reacts differently to different types of touch. While it’s challenging to separate out the cause of each signal, these materials are easier to make and stronger.
Researchers melted a soft, flexible, and conductive gelatine-based hydrogel (导电的明胶基水凝胶) and shaped it into a human hand. By testing different electrode (电极) setups, they found that just 32 electrodes at the wrist could collect over 1.7 million data points about touch across the whole hand. They tested the artificial skin by heating it, pressing it with fingers and a robot arm, and even cutting it. The team used this data to train a machine learning model so the hand could recognize different types of touch.
In future, the researchers are hoping to improve the durability of the electronic skin, and to carry out further tests on real-world robotic tasks.
8. What is the feature of the new robotic skin?
A. Being sensitive as human skin.
B. Having 860,000 human-like pathways.
C. Using single sensor for multiple touches.
D. Possessing self-recovering capability after damage.
9. Why did researchers develop the new robotic skin?
A. To replace human skin functions. B. To simplify sensor production.
C. To create self-aware robots. D. To reduce the cost of skin materials.
10. What does the fifth paragraph mainly tell us about the new artificial skin?
A. The working principle. B. The experimental process.
C. The analysis of data. D. The potential applications.
11. What might be the best title for the text?
A. New Skin Gives Robots Human Touch
B. Robots Are Covered with Flexible Skins
C. Special Sensors Add New Functions to Robots
D. Scientists Invent New Materials for Sensors

D
Returning to a book you’ve read many times can feel like drinks with an old friend. There’s a welcome familiarity, but also sometimes a slight suspicion that time has changed you both, and thus the relationship. But books don’t change, people do. And that’s what makes the act of rereading so rich and transformative.
The beauty of rereading lies in the idea that our bond with the work is based on our present mental register. It’s true, the older I get, the more I feel time has wings. But with reading, it’s all about the present. It’s about the now and what one contributes to the now, because reading is a give and take between author and reader. Each has to pull their own weight.
There are three books I reread annually. The first, which I take to reading every spring, is Ernest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast. Published in 1964, it’s his classic memoir of 1920s Paris. The language is almost intoxicating (令人陶醉的), an aging writer looking back on an ambitious yet simpler time. Another is Annie Dillard’s Holy the Firm, her poetic 1975 ramble (随笔) about everything and nothing. The third book ís Julio Cortazar’s Save Twilight: Selected Poems, as if a bottle of wine remaining more and more mellow as time flows.
While I tend to buy a lot of books, these three were given to me as gifts, which might add to the meaning I attach to them. But I imagine that, while money is indeed wonderful and necessary, rereading an author’s work is the highest currency a reader can pay them. The best books are the ones that open further as time passes. But remember, it’s you that have to grow and read and reread in order to better understand your friends.
12. What does the author imply in the first paragraph?
A. Drinking with old friends is quite beneficial.
B. Either books or us are changeable along with time.
C. It is recommended to read one book over and over again.
D. Rereading requires a large amount of time and money.
13. What do you know about Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast?
A. It’s a brief account of a trip.
B. It’s about Hemingway’s life as a young man.
C. It’s a record of a historic event.
D. It’s about Hemingway’s friends in Paris.
14. How do you understand “rereading an author’s work is the highest currency a reader can pay them” in the last paragraph?
A. Rereading can help readers pay their debts.
B. Rereading will bring satisfaction to authors.
C. The more one reads, the richer he will be.
D. Readers should pay money to reread books.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Three Masterpieces I Reread Annually
B. Effective Approaches to Rereading Books
C. Author and Reader Pull Their Own Weight
D. Rereading Does Matter to Personal Growth
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. B 15. D

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容利所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Why was our neighbor from across the street crazily pounding on our front door at night? She was screaming for us to open it. We rah lo the door, and she said only one word as she took off running: “FIRE!” Then she let us know that she had already called 119.
We ran out just as the fire engines raced onto our street. The fire was huge! Flames were shooting wildly out of the windows and through the roof of the hundred-year-old, three-story house next door. The flames were so tall that they were visible a few miles away. Our house smelled of smoke. The whole neighborhood smelled of smoke.
My husband raced next door to ensure our neighbors had gotten out. All family members were outside and safe, including the dog. He ran to the houses on the other street that backed up to the house on fire and banged (猛敲) on those doors to ensure the neighbors were safe, too. Luckily, they were!
Our street was crowded with fire trucks, eleven in all. One engine had a monster light on it that made the street bright enough so that it looked like it was high noon on a sunny day. The paramedics (救护人员) and ambulances also came in case they were needed. Thank goodness, they were not. Our house became kind of a “safe house” with our next-door neighbors coming and going, as needed. It was a safe place for their dog, too.
After around two hours, the fire was completely contained. Amazingly, the house was not a total loss. Most of it, while smoky and damp, could be saved. And only a few important items were lost. Only two rooms and a hallway would need to be reconstructed. The rest of the house could be cleaned and aired out.
Everyone was okay. Their gratitude for the firefighters was overwhelming. They couldn’t stop saying “Thank you.” They expressed their gratitude to us many times for opening our house to them. It was a small thing for us, but tremendous for them.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
The next day, there were a lot of activities going on in our neighborhood.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As weeks went by, the house was slowly but steadily being rebuilt.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
The next day, there were a lot of activities going on in our neighborhood. People who had been affected by the fire were busy sorting through their belongings, trying to salvage what they could. Volunteers came to help, bringing food, water, and clothes to those in need. The community center organized a donation drive, which was a great success. Everyone was doing what they could to support each other during this difficult time. It was heartwarming to see how our neighborhood came together in the face of adversity.
As weeks went by, the house was slowly but steadily being rebuilt. Workers who specialized in construction were hired to fix the damage. Although it was a long and arduous process, the family who lived there remained hopeful. They said that they were grateful for the support from the community, which had given them the strength to keep going. We all looked forward to the day when they could move back into their restored home and start their lives anew. It was a reminder of the power of community and the importance of looking out for one another.

C

Yesterday, I called a friend to talk about an online meeting we’d had. What I wanted to do was scream. But, thankfully my self-regulation skills still remained, so I didn’t.
Self-regulation means regulating your emotions. It is an invisible skill and considered one of the higher-order thinking processes. However, I find that self-regulation skills are most often the lacking skill set. ____17____ Because, when a child lacks self-regulation skills, negative behaviors often show up. Hitting, throwing things, and crying are just some of the examples.
