In the age of GenAI (生成式人工智能), educators everywhere are entering a new world of teaching. It’s exciting that high technology is helping students learn in powerful ways. However, teachers also have worries, such as how to guide students in using GenAI tools like ChatGPT to learn more deeply instead of just using them to cheat.
Although their influence on education is still not sure, the use of AI in education is not new.
Machine learning, a part of AI, is very good at predicting what students are ready to learn next. For example, in an English class, it can help identify which vocabulary words students have mastered and which ones they have not. This helps students avoid spending too much time on what they already know well, which is a great way to make learning more personalized (个性化).
During the process, well-trained AI can notice students’ use of educational software (软件) and let educators know about students who may have difficulty in learning. If necessary, teachers can then take proper action.
GenAI will also open doors to (给……机会) intelligent tools. Take writing in English as an example. GenAI can understand students writing skill as soon as they finish their writing tasks, and provide personalized advice based on different learning styles. It also helps teachers better understand their students.
Although the future with AI is not yet clear, it’s important to focus on what matters most — GenAI is another tool to help students succeed.

The following is an interview with Sharanya Chudgar, a middle-school scientist in the US. At 14, she built a solar-powered (太阳能的) trash-collecting robot.
Where did this idea come from?
“When I took part in a volunteer trash clean-up, I saw how much trash there was, and I knew that I had to solve this problem. People do not have enough time or energy, right? But robots do. So it was then that my project idea formed in my head.”
What was your favorite part of this project?
“Building the robot. Ever since the first or second grade, I’ve loved building things with Legos, and building my robot felt just like playing with Legos. But this time, I had to come up with how to guide others to build it. I haven’t done that before. It was a completely new experience.”
Any advice for science project beginners?
“Follow the scientific ways. And never give up. It might seem difficult at times, but __________. You may hold the thought ‘Oh no, what if I mess this up?’ To be quite honest, making mistakes is a part of the whole learning journey.”

In December 2020, the “quiet carriage” service was first introduced on some trains of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway and the Chengdu-Chongqing high-speed railway. Up to June 2024, this service has expanded to the Beijing-Guangzhou, Beijing-Harbin, Shanghai-Kunming and other high-speed railways.
The “quiet carriages” have silent videos and announcements made at a low voice. Doors at both ends of the carriage are closed to reduce noise from outside. In the age of GenAI (生成式人工智能) educators everywhere are entering a new world of teaching.
32. How do teacher feel about GenAI?
A. Excited but tired. B. Sad and afraid.
C. Surprised and moved. D. Happy but worried.
33. What does the understand word “their” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Powerful ways’. B. GenAI tools’. C. Teachers’. D. Students’.

A. To explain the importance of AI to students. B. To introduce different kinds of AI tools.
C. To show AI’s role in personalized learning. D. To point out some problems in AI.
35. Who is the passage mainly written for?
A. Language beginners. B. English educators.
C. AI developers. D. Technology companies.

With the development of China, there is more need for learning Chinese. As a result, many learners of Chinese start to use online apps. Here are many online apps, such as Wukong, Du Chinese, Hello Chinese, Duolingo and Chineasy.
Today, Duolingo offers new courses for learning Chinese. Learners aboard can learn more about Chinese culture, such as the Spring Festival, martial arts, and Peking Opera. There is also cultural learning about daily life.
Sixteen-year-old Isabella comes from a French Chinese family. She spent her childhood in China before moving to the US. Three years ago, she started learning Chinese again, and found that it was fun.
Every day, she spends about five minutes practicing on language-learning app Duolingo, which has lasted for over 300 days. She usually interacts with her teacher to improve her Chinese. With her teacher from Shanghai on screen, she reads books and practices conversations. “I think Chinese will be really useful. My grandma and other family members speak it, so I hope to talk with them in Chinese,” she says.
Ken, a Japanese man, uses Duolingo to improve his Chinese twice a week. He hopes that when he visits his wife’s hometown of Chongqing next time, he’ll be able to communicate with her families in Chinese
For now, he doesn’t find listening or speaking too hard, but reading and writing are difficult for him. “For me, reading is the most difficult part because many of the Chinese characters have two or three pronunciations, so I often make mistakes.”
