Shayden Walker, from Amarillo, Texas, went to his neighbour’s house looking for children his age. He stopped by and talked to his neighbour through the family’s front door security camera. His neighbour, Brennan Ray, responded and told him there were some kids nearby. But that wouldn’t do for Shayden. “They’re not my friends anymore because they’re bullies (仗势欺人者),” the boy said. The two carried on a short conversation about whether Ray had kids of his own Shayden could play with. Ray’s daughter is just a baby though, he told the boy.
The conversation inspired Ray to post the video on TikTok, hoping to connect with the boy’s family. “You never know what people are going through until you get a chance to talk to them. This young man is well mannered, kind, and brave. So TikTok, can we help Shayden make some friends?” Ray said in the video. The post got nearly 69 million views.
Shayden was diagnosed with autism (自闭症) and some other mental health disorders, said his mother, Krishna Patterson. “People need to know that these mental health issues can make children, even adults, feel sad and alone. Shayden has had a hard time maintaining friendships and sometimes has ‘meltdowns’ that include crying and accidentally hurting himself and other people who try to calm him down,” she added. When he had these meltdowns, people were like “We don’t want our kids to hang out with your kid”.
After his recent visit to the Rays’ house and hearing from so many kind people, he said he feels “pretty good”. He has made friends all over the world, including from Hawaii, China, Australia and England. Ray and his wife also started a GoFundMe. The page raised over $37,000 for Shayden to go towards whatever he wants, including a gaming setup, school clothes and amusement park (游乐园) tickets. Shayden’s mum said he wants to donate some of the money to some charities.

A boy who has been climbing the equivalent (等量) of Mount Qomolangma in aid of a children’s hospice (救济院) is about to reach his fundraising goal of £29,031. Six-year-old Oscar, from Lancaster, has climbed 10 of the UK’s highest mountains to help Chorley’s Derian House. He said he needed two more to match Mount Qomolangma’s 29,031 feet height.
Oscar started his challenge on October 9, 2022, and Ingleborough in the Yorkshire Dales was the first mountain to be chosen. He said that the hardest climb so far had been Cairn Gorm in the Scottish Highlands because the snow was so deep.
Oscar took on the challenge in the hope of raising enough money to send 29 children with life-limiting illnesses on holiday. “I wanted to be the youngest person to climb Mount Qomolangma and I have climbed 10 out of 12 mountains. When I get older, I want to climb the real Mount Qomolangma,” Oscar said.
“It was amazing what a child’s dream can achieve. We’re speechless and couldn’t be prouder. We were grateful to everyone that supported us along Oscar’s journey,” Oscar’s father Matt wrote on the social media.
Oscar and his family hoped to make their final climb on Ben Nevis in Scotland on May 29, 2023. The climb would mark not only the completion of Oscar’s challenge, but also the 70th anniversary of the first successful ascent (攀登) of Mount Qomolangma by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.
“For every foot he climbed, our children would get a pound to achieve their dreams. The total £29,031 raised by Oscar would help support the work of the hospice, which provides end-of-life care to more than 400 children across the northwest of England,” said Karen Edwards, a senior official of Derian House.
“The six-year-old was an unbelievable little boy who had truly gone to great heights. How many six-year-olds could say that they have climbed the height of Mount Qomolangma?” Karen added.

In his senior year of high school, Wei Fangjie happened to see a poster for recruiting PLA Air Force pilots. “The pilots on the poster looked really cool, and I got to know that a pilot is known as a profession of the brave. So, I decided to give it a try,” said Wei, 26, who now works as a flight instructor at the Air Force Aviation University.
In 2015, Wei was admitted into the Air Force Aviation University and became an Air Force pilot student. According to Wei, pilots need to not only study aviation theory but also practice difficult aerobatics (飞行特技) like rolls and loops. These moves require strong resistance to g-forces. “To do a loop, a pilot has to bear about 3g of load, which feels like three times their body weight pressing down on them,” said Wei. To build this resistance, they often do strength training like weighted squats. They also use special equipment like a spinning ladder (旋梯) to overcome dizziness.
Despite all the training, becoming a top PLA Air Force pilot remains a tough job. “During flight, pilots must carefully decide how to land, especially at night, and maintain position during formation flight,” explained Wei. He added that the key to these skills lies in continuous practice.
In the world of aviation, a balanced mindset and quick thinking are very important. One of Wei’s most unforgettable experiences was dealing with illusions (错觉) during a formation fight up above the clouds. All he could see in front of him was the lead aircraft and clouds. “I felt like I was turning all the time, but my instruments showed that my flight was level,” said Wei. “In such situations, trusting instruments is key to making sound decisions.”
But what always remains constant is the great sense of freedom and pride that Wei feels as he flies his aircraft in the sky and looks down at Earth from above. Now, as an experienced flight instructor, Wei hopes to channel his passion for aviation into the “training and development of a new generation of skilled pilots so as to contribute to the PLA Air Force’s combat readiness.”
1.What inspired Wei Fangjie to pursue a career as a pilot?
A.Meeting a flight instructor at school. B.His deep interest in aviation technology.
C.Advice from a high school career advisor. D.Seeing a poster wanting PLA Air Force pilots.
2.How do pilots develop resistance to g-forces?
A.By practicing aerobatics. B.By getting rid of dizziness.
C.By flying with a spinning ladder. D.By doing strength-building exercises.
3.What is the key to mastering flying skills, according to Wei?
A.Quick thinking. B.Frequent training.
C.A balanced mindset. D.Overcoming illusions.
4.What is Wei’s current goal as a fight instructor?
A.Training a new generation of skilled pilots. B.Flying his aircraft with a sense of freedom.
C.Encouraging more young people to become pilots. D.Contributing to the development of aviation theory.

My family has a history of diabetes (糖尿病), and I was, too, at risk of suffering from these diseases. When my doctor told me I had to do something about my weight because I was in danger of falling ill, I knew I had to take action.
I did not want to become like my relatives who had to constantly worry about their health and suffer the consequences of ill health. In fact, I wanted to be healthy and I wanted to stay healthy. Consequently, I began this journey of losing weight and becoming fit.
It took me years to get my weight back within healthy limits, and I faced many challenges along the way. Right now, I am not saying that the journey is over since it is not. But what I can say is that, along the way, I managed to create some really good, healthy habits for myself that allow me to keep myself in good shape.
I cannot describe to you the great feeling of finally being in control of my own body. For years, I thought it was impossible to lose weight and that I was doomed (注定的) to share my family’s medical problems. When the doctor told me I should lose weight, I was not very positive about getting results. However, once they started to appear, my attitude changed.
What I noticed, while I was on this road of losing weight, was that the little changes I could make counted the most. It was not a crazy strict diet or exercising for hours that helped me lose weight and keep it that way. The little habits, the small things - they were the ones that offered me the best way to lose the extra pounds I was carrying around. These are the tips that I followed: always warm up before exercising, drink enough water and always eat breakfast. That is how I managed to lose the weight I wanted. I followed the three simple tips above, which also.-gave me some good habits!

PeerUp is pairing up and helping out students who are looking to improve their mental health. It serves as a space for students to speak anonymously (匿名地) about their mental health journeys with peer (同龄人) supporters. As a bridge between the student body and UCLA Counseling and Psychological Services, PeerUp addresses the barriers many students face in accessing mental health resources, said co-founder and third-year psychology student Carrie Lee.
Peer supporters on the site complete mental health leadership training with the Resilience In Your Student Experience Center to learn how to address emotional issues like interpersonal problems. Lee said in a 20- to 40-minute video or text conversation, a student can talk to a peer who may have experienced similar struggles.
PeerUp offers support in both English and Chinese to serve the campus community of international students. Lee said PeerUp is devoted to ensuring students who speak Chinese can speak anonymously in their native language whenever needed. “Students are much more comfortable reaching out to people they know come from a similar culture,” she said. “I think it is really important to offer services to the different communities we have at UCLA.”
PeerUp co-founder and peer supporter Yutong Feng said the most rewarding part of her work was students’ willingness to talk with PeerUp, including the five students who connected with supporters in the first week.
In terms of future growth and accessibility, Lee said the PeerUp team hopes to expand the number of languages offered, make appointments for students who cannot make it to drop-in hours and use different platforms for voice calls and messaging. She said UCLA, as the first university to do a full test run, is providing a model for other schools to launch their own PeerUp programs and ensure students are taking care of their mental health.

On New Year’s Day 2023, I had a panic attack at work. Unfortunately for me, that meant in front of millions of people, as I was delivering the news, live, on ABC’s Good Morning America. In the wake of my nationally televised panic, I learned that I had undiagnosed depression. For months, I’d been having trouble getting out of bed in the morning and felt as if I had an everlasting low-grade fever.
Two things changed my mind. The first was the science. In recent years, there has been an explosion of research into meditation (冥想), which has been shown to reduce blood pressure, improve recovery after your body releases the stress hormone cortisol (荷尔蒙皮质醇), strengthen the immune system, and relieve the symptoms of depression and anxiety.
The second thing that changed my mind about meditation is that it does not necessarily take a lot of the magic stuff I feared it might. Contrary to popular belief, meditation does not have to involve folding yourself into a roll, joining a group, or wearing special dress. The word meditation is a little bit like the world sports; there are hundreds of varieties. The type of meditation discussed here is called mindfulness meditation, which is acquired from Buddhism but does not require adopting a belief system or declaring oneself to be a Buddhist.
I began my practice slowly, with just five to ten minutes a day, which is what I recommend everyone aim for at the start. I have learned that the less delighted you are by the voice in your head, the more you can make room for entirely new thoughts and feelings to appear. In sum, meditation enables you to tap into what lies beneath or beyond the ego (自我). Call it creativity. Call it your original wisdom. Some people call it your heart.
1.What can the author’s profession possibly be?
A.Reporter. B.Editor. C.TV broadcaster. D.Radio host.
2.What changed the author’s mind about meditation?
A.It can lower blood pressure.
B.It can reduce depression and anxiety.
C.It can improve students’ behavior and performance.
D.It is scientific and without much fantastic frightening things.
3.What’s the difference between popular belief and mediation?
A.Mediation is free from various chains and forms.
B.Meditation doesn’t need to fold someone into a roll.
C.Meditation is more like the world sports than popular belief.
D.Meditation requires someone to join a group or wear special dress.
4.How do you make yourself more creative according to the last paragraph?
A.Keep a quiet environment. B.Keep your mind clean.
C.Practice mediation slowly. D.Keep a less delighted mind.

Some of the classrooms at Taft Elementary in Santa Clara, California, have one disadvantage in common: They don’t have windows. That’s true for Logan Earnest’s fifth grade classroom, and he felt it was affecting his students.
“Most of the day, they’re inside,” Earnest told CBS News. “And they don’t really get to see any trees, grass, or the blue sky.” He said the gray walls could be depressing to the kids and may affect their attention and even their attendance.
This was confirmed by former school psychologist Ernesto Rodriguez, who said the lack of windows does affect kids, because research shows being in and around nature eases anxiety and benefits students. Though no longer a practicing psychologist, perhaps he knows now more than ever the impact nature has on mental health. Rodriguez became a park ranger (公园管理员) on Southern California’s Catalina Island and began focusing on his passion—landscape photography.
It was during his training to become a park ranger that he learned a fact that kids who have views out windows to trees do better academically, emotionally and creatively. So an idea to bring nature into rooms occurred to him: Why not bring landscapes in classrooms—via the ceiling (天花板), because teachers don’t typically use them.
Rodriguez took 360 degree shots of tree canopies (树冠) using his photography skills, then he printed them and fit them onto the classroom ceiling of Earnest’s fifth grade. “Beautiful,”one student said as she entered the room. Another student said the trees brought him peace, “When you look up, it feels like you’re sitting under a tree.”
Earnest said he thought there would be many positive effects on his students. “I think my attendance is going to go up. The kids are going to want to come here more frequently. Overall, I think the kids are going to be happier,” he said.
1.What is the common challenge shared by some classrooms at Taft Elementary?
A.Lack of fresh air. B.Absence of windows.

A.They did not notice the change.
B.They failed to concentrate on lessons.
C.They preferred the original gray ceiling.
D.They were in favour of the new additions.
4.What’s Logan Earnest’s attitude towards the change in the classroom?
A.Cautious and objective. B.Appreciative and supportive.
C.Concerned but doubtful. D.Curious but unsure.

Not all heroes wear capes (披风), but sometimes they have scissors.
At a barbershop, Rafael Santana and Osvaldo Lugo were working through a typical afternoon when the ordinary suddenly turned urgent (紧急的).
Santana, a father of four, looked at a blur (模糊形状) of pink racing down the sidewalk. Instantly, he knew something was wrong. When he saw the little girl running alone and heading towards a busy crossroad, he shouted to Lugo, and both barbers (理发师) dropped their scissors and rushed out the door. Fortunately, they managed to stop her just before she reached the crosswalk. It was a close call, but courageous actions made all the difference.
After Santana and Lugo’s courageous act saved a child from running into traffic, the local police department didn’t waste time recognizing the bravery of these two barbers. Within hours, the East Hartford Police Department posted a heartfelt message on their official website page, publicly praising Santana and Lugo for their quick action and calling them heroes. The post stressed the quick-thinking actions of Santana and Lugo that prevented what could have been a heartbreaking incident. The police department made it clear that the actions of these two men had not only saved a child’s life but also proved the power of everyday heroes in the community.
Despite the recognition, Santana and Lugo remained modest. “We did this out of love, and we'd do it a million times again,” Santana said. “We protect and serve our community at all costs.”
Santana and Lugo might be known for their styling skills, but now they’re also known for their actions and heroism. The barbershop’s regulars now have a story to tell, and it’s not just about a great cut. It’s about two barbers who became heroes when it mattered most.

One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn’t have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn’t, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him. Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn’t lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could - he huddled (蜷缩) in his cave and slept.
The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn’t find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. Having been stuck in the snow for two days, Nicholas was saved.
Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched Grylls’ survival show Man vs. Wild. That’s where he learned the tips that saved his life. When Grylls heard about Nicholas’ amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.

I believe that we can use social media for a lot of great things and it’s important especially for business owners like me. Ever since I started my calligraphy business two years ago, I’ve never spent a day without going on social media, especially a kind of social app on my phone, on which I promoted my products and services and got in contact with possible customers.
Later I found it got in the way of more important things. I hate to say I was hooked by it, but I was. Every time I turned on my phone, I would dive into it. This one month off the app on the phone was healthy for me. If it were not for my business, I would like not to have it on my phone. I downloaded the app again on my phone, but only used it to post my own content. I didn’t intend to paint social media in a negative light, but now I just don’t think the way I was using it was healthy. It’s difficult to find balance, but I’m going to try to do it anyway. In 2017, Jennifer Flewellen’s life took a dramatic turn while driving to work. After dropping her kids off at school, she felt light-headed and drove off the road, crashing into a pole. She ended up in a serious condition and was in a faint for five years.
Throughout this challenging time, Jennifer’s mother, Peggy Means, never lost hope for her daughter’s recovery. Doctors repeatedly told Peggy that Jennifer’s chances of waking up were slim and that even if she did awaken, she would not be able to function.
“They encouraged me, by like day two or three to take her off life support,” Peggy recalled. “I said, ‘No, not as of today, I’m not going to do that.’” Peggy’s hope never wavered (动摇).

Most recently, Zhang Chaofan has been honored as a national ethical role model at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Over the past six years, Zhang has donated 1.35 million yuan and raised 5.2 million yuan from the public to help more than 400 people with health problems — including teachers with severe cancer, disabled children and autistic (自闭症的) children in poor families — learn traditional Chinese culture.
She has also made more than 700 public welfare speeches at universities and in poor mountain areas, teaching people how to gain self-esteem, confidence, self-reliance and self-improvement.
The young girl was born without a left forearm in Changchun, Jilin Province, but her constant drive to become stronger has inspired many people.
In 2015, Zhang rejected an offer of postgraduate study from a famous university and set up a calligraphy and painting school in Changchun. “I think it’s important for teenagers to receive quality education because they are the future of the country,” she said. “I will make great efforts to help them get equal opportunities to pursue their dreams and inspire them to do their best.”
In early 2020, her school stopped all courses because of the pandemic, but she didn’t stop her public welfare activities. She raised materials and donations worth more than 8 million yuan. Then she sent masks, protective suits, and daily necessities to medical workers.
“Women in the new era should have the courage to create value and also have a sense of social responsibility,” she said. “It is my great honor to be elected as a role model. This will become a driving force for me to forge ahead and pass on the seeds of public welfare through even greater efforts.”

(吉林省“三区九校”2023-2024高一下期末试题)
As for Ray, his video has taught the world a lesson in kindness and acceptance.

(吉林省“BEST合作体”2023-2024高一下期末试题)
【答案】1.D 2.D 3.B 4.A

(吉林省“BEST合作体”2022-20232022-2023高一下期末试题)
【答案】1.C 2.D 3.A 4.B

2.细节理解题。根据第二段第二句“The first was the science.(首先是科学)”和第三段第一句“The second thing that changed my mind about meditation is that it does not necessarily take a lot of the magic stuff I feared it might.(第二件改变我对冥想看法的事情是,它并不一定需要很多我担心的神奇的东西)”可知,改变了作者对冥想的看法是它是科学的,没有很多神奇的可怕的东西。故选D。
3.细节理解题。根据第三段第二句“Contrary to popular belief, meditation does not have to involve folding yourself into a roll, joining a group, or wearing special dress.(与普遍的看法相反,冥想并不一定要把自己蜷成一团,加入一个团体,或者穿特殊的衣服)”可知,普遍看法和冥想的区别是冥想不受各种链条和形式的束缚。故选A。
4.推理判断题。根据最后一段第二句“I have learned that the less delighted you are by the voice in your head, the more you can make room for entirely new thoughts and feelings to appear.(我明白了,你越不为自己头脑中的声音感到高兴,你就越能腾出空间让全新的想法和感受出现)”可知,你可以通过保持头脑清醒让自己更有创造力。故选B。

(吉林省吉林八校2023-2024高一下期末联考试题)
C.Insufficient lighting. D.Limited access to technology.
2.Why did Ernesto Rodriguez bring landscapes into classrooms?
A.To connect the students with nature.
B.To promote his photography skills.
C.To improve the teachers’ performance.
D.To create an exciting environment for the students.
3.How did the students react to Rodriguez’s pictures on the classroom ceiling?
A.They did not notice the change.

1.What caused Nicholas to get lost at the mountain?

Despite the difficulties, Peggy cared for Jennifer daily, maintaining a positive attitude and treating her as if she could hear. “I’d tell her what the kids are doing, what we’ve been doing, and I tried to encourage her,” Peggy told GMA. “For years I would hold her hands and say, ‘Just hold my hand, Jennifer.
