Winter sports were popular in the north of China hundreds of years ago.
This combination (联合) of ice skating and archery (箭术) became popular during the Qing Dynasty. There were three arches (拱门) put on the ice, with a silk ball hung by a rope in the middle of each arch. Players would skate across the ice, led by a person with a flag. Once passing through an arch, they would turn around and try to hit the ball with an arrow. The scene was very powerful, as hundreds of players joined in together, moving in a line like a dragon.
In the match, the players were divided into two teams. They competed to catch a ball thrown into the air above ice. According to historical records, the Qing government included the sport in military (军事的) training, as it could improve players’ endurance (耐力) and strength.

A new mental health hotline, 12356, was put into use in several provinces across China in January. The number leaves out “4” because it sounds like the word for “trouble” in Chinese. This gives it a funny nickname: the “no trouble” hotline.
In Beijing, nearly 500 calls were received in the first five days, for a total of 170 hours of advice. 12356 will be available (可用的) nationwide starting May 1.
Mental (心理) health is a major issue (焦点) today. A survey showed that about 95 million people in China suffer from depression (遭受抑郁). If you include other mental health problems, the number is much higher.
Li Mengyang was diagnosed (诊断) with serious depression in 2020. His doctor said that too much work was a direct cause. But Li believes that his unsatisfied personal purposes and not being able to express himself were the deep causes. His case is echoed by many across China, where work, family and other stresses are common. So far, most callers to 12356 are between the ages of 19 and 45, though the elderly and teenagers are also at high risk.
The government has recognized the importance of mental health. In 2021, a special mental health department was set up to help providing counseling (咨询) services. Today, there are about 6,000 mental health service centers in the country, a 205% increase from 2010.
But problems remain. Some patients are unwilling to ask for help. Also, such service isn’t yet available in every community, especially in the countryside.
Still, 12356’s role as a lifeline is important. “It offers people the chance to talk to someone about their problems,” said a medical professor. “It’s an easy-to-reach support in times of mental troubles.”
26. What is 12356 according to the passage?
A. A sign of no trouble. B. A door open to sick people of all ages.

At sunset, after a day’s hard work, the little boy would go up to the top of a hill and look at another hill some miles away. There stood a house with windows of clear gold, which shone so brightly that it was hard to look at them directly; but after a while, it looked like any common farmhouse.
One day, the boy got a free day. He decided to look for the house with the golden windows.
It was pleasant walking. His bare (裸露的) feet made marks in the white dust, and when he looked back, the footprints seemed to be following him, making company (陪伴) for him. His shadow (影子),too, kept beside him, dancing or running with him, which made him feel very cheerful.
After a long time, he stood on the top of a high green hill. But he found the windows were of clear glass, like any others, and there was no gold anywhere.
A girl of his age came to the door, and asked him what he wanted. “You’ve come the wrong way!” Then they went to a hill that rose behind the farmhouse. As they walked, the little girl told him that the golden windows could only be seen at a certain hour, about sunset.
“Yes, I know that!” said the boy.
On the top of the hill, the girl turned and pointed. There, on a hill far away, stood a house with windows of clear gold, just as he had seen. When they looked again, the boy saw that it was his own home!
It was deep dark when the boy got home that day. The lamplight shone through the windows, making them almost as bright as he had seen them from the hilltop. When he opened the door, his mother came to kiss him, and his little sister ran to throw her arms about his neck, and his father looked up and smiled, “Have you had a good day?”

What man-made objects in China can be seen from space? They don’t include the Great Wall of course, which is mostly no wider than a country road; but surely include the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces (红河哈尼梯田).
Hacked (开辟) from mountains in Yunnan province, the terraces spread over more than 160 square kilometers to create one of the most amazing landscapes on the planet.
“Since ancient times, the local Hani people have built ditches (沟渠) to pass spring water from mountains and forests to water terraced fields,” said a local guide. “The number of ditches required has been huge. It needs a great deal of manpower.”
It is believed that the Hani people arrived in the Ailao Mountains around the third century, having moved south from the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau (高地). They were so impressed by what they found there—rich land, mild climate, plentiful rainfall—they chose to put down roots.
Hani farmers began carving the terraces by hand during the Tang Dynasty. Some are as big as football fields, and others no larger than a bed. The terraces climb from 500 meters to 1,800 meters above sea level. They’re “stairways to heaven”.
However, the Hani’s engineered wonder remained largely hidden from the rest of the world for centuries. Nobody paid much attention to them until the 2000s. The local government managed to get them highlighted on UNESCO’s World Heritage (遗产) List in 2013.
Though the terraces shine with bright green in the summer growing season, the landscape is at its most photogenic (上镜的) from November to late April, when the waterlogged terraces become natural mirrors that reflect (折射) every sunrise and sunset, with farmers and water buffalo (水牛) walking by from time to time.
33. The Honghe Hani Rice Terraces ________.
A. were built with the help of the local government
B. are the only man-made object that can be seen from space
C. were carved by Hani farmers on the Qinghai-Xizang plateau

34. When does the Hani Rice Terraces look the most beautiful in photographs?
A. In winter. B. From autumn to spring.
C. In late spring. D. During the summer growing season.
35. Why didn’t the Hani Rice Terraces come to light until the 2000s?
A. Because the government didn’t support it.
B. Because people couldn’t get there easily.
C. Because there were not enough reports about them.
D. Because the local people were unwilling to be discovered.
36. What may be the writer’s attitude (态度) towards the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces?
①A place worth visiting and enjoying. ②One common nice tourist attraction in China.

Unlike the ancient cuju, players were allowed to pass the ball with their hands and feet. According to historical records, the Qing government included the sport in military (军事的) training, as it could improve players’ endurance (耐力) and strength.
This sport was popular in the 18th century. On cold winter days, organizers would water a slope (斜坡) about ten meters in length to create an ice track for competitors. Wearing ice skates, competitors would take turns to slide (滑行) down the slope to show as much of their skating skills as they could. Those who made it down the slope without falling would be the winner. The sport was dangerous and carried a high risk of injury (损伤).
23. Group work is very important in ________.

C. archery on ice and downhill ice skating D. archery on ice, ice football and downhill ice skating
24. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A new mental health hotline, 12356, was put into use in several provinces across China in January. The number leaves out “4” because it sounds like the word for “trouble” in Chinese. This gives it a funny nickname: the “no trouble” hotline.
In Beijing, nearly 500 calls were received in the first five days, for a total of 170 hours of advice. 12356 will be available (可用的) nationwide starting May 1.
Mental (心理的) health is a major issue (焦点) today.
In 2021 a special mental health department was set up to help providing counseling (咨询) services.
C. A telephone number for food support. D. A way to help solve mental problems.
27. Many numbers, such as 500, 170, 95 million, and 6000, are used to ________.

B. say that the government has tried his best
C. show mental illness is more serious than expected
D. give a clear picture of people suffering from depression
28. What does the underlined word “echoed” probably mean in Chinese?

C. Mental health needs more care. D. Many people suffer from depression.

“Yes!” said the boy. “I have learned that our house has windows of gold.”
30. From the third paragraph, we may know the boy ________.

C. Warmth in the family made the house shine like gold.
D. The boy’s father had their house decorated with gold.

“Since ancient times the local Hani people have built ditches (沟渠) to pass spring water from mountains and forests to water terraced fields,” said a local guide.
D. were created to bring water down from the forests to the farmland
