Two years ago,my son sat me down for a talk."Mom,it's time,"he said."Hear me out:It's time
we got actual TV.And you need an iPhone."
This funny conversation two years ago marked a change in our relationship.Perhaps for the first
time,I began to really listen to John's opinion about our home technology.Since his reasoning was
sound and his suggestions were within budget,I took his advice and was pleasantly surprised with the
results.
I'd known for a while that my son understands technology better than I do.On airplanes,he
grabbed my phone to put it in airplane mode.He wired the speakers in our house. After something
was stolen from our front yard,he picked out,set up,and now monitors our security camera. When
my computer died,I took him shopping with me.
He has a busy social life, with skateboarding, basketball, and online gaming.I see our time
together reducing and our shared interests shrinking. That's why I jumped at the chance when a friend
mentioned writing technology reviews. When I presented the idea to my teen,he immediately

accepted.
It's changed our relationship in surprising ways.Where he used to get annoyed quickly at my
technical ignorance,he's learned to be more patient and explain things to me in a way that I can
convey to an equally unknowing audience. The parent--child dynamic is not only changed;it's even
slightly reversed ()He's leading me.I'm asking him for help and advice.
My son has risen to the occasion. He's taking it seriously, and to watch him.mature in this way is
an honor. As someone not much of a reader,he now searches instruction booklets.Without any
prompting,he's even emailed and called-yes,made an actual phone call-to customer service or
tech support when products weren't working as expected.
I never imagined being a tech reviewer,but it's proved to be a valuable way.to learn from,work
with, and enjoy time with my teen.

"Can you finish the work by the end of the day?"This question might cause anxiety for many
employees. However, recent research indicates that shorter deadlines can actually help some
individuals to complete tasks more efficiently and perceive their workload as less frightening.
In a study focused on retirement planning, volunteers completed a brief online survey under
two different deadline conditions. One group had seven days to finish the survey, while the other was
given 14 days. The researchers discovered that-those facing the longer deadline often viewed the task
高二英语期中考试试题第5页共12页
as more difficult.Although participants with the extended deadline initially invested more time and
resources, they were also more likely to procrastinate and less likely to complete the assignment
compared to those with shorter deadlines.
Recognizing that people frequently deal with multiple deadlines, researchers explored how
individuals manage various tasks at the same time. The findings found a mental tendency:individuals
often delay important tasks in favor of urgent but less significant ones. For example, many delay
routine medical check-ups crucial for health in favor of tushing to a store for a limited-time sale. This
occurs because important tasks feel more complex and distant, while urgent tasks provide immediate
satisfaction.
These patterns have significant results for managers and others involved in setting deadlines,
Understanding these mental processes can help find strategies to enhance task completion rates.Short
deadlines for urgent tasks tend to draw attention more effectively, leading to higher completion rates
and reduced procrastination. On the other hand, longer deadlines can lead to excessive careful thought
or distraction,resulting in incomplete work.
However,it's essential to recognize that longer deadlines may still be necessary for complex
tasks particularly when external factors, such as resource availability or cooperation, require
additional time for proper completion. In such cases,a balanced approach is crucial:setting realistic
deadlines that account for both urgency and complexity can lead to improved outcomes.By
recognizing the minor differences of human motivation, individuals and organizations can develop
effective strategies for task management.
28.What does the underlined word "procrastinate"in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Finish quickly.
B.Put off.
C.Start early.
D.Do carefully.
29.Why do people tend to delay important tasks for urgent ones?
A.Urgent tasks offer instant rewards.
B.Urgent tasks are more complicated.
C.Important tasks are less challenging.
D.Important tasks need multi-tasking.
30.How should managers set proper deadlines to improve outcomes?
A.Set all tasks with shorter deadlines.
B.Prioritize resources and cooperation.
C.Balance task urgency and complexity.
D.Extend deadlines for significant tasks.
31.What can be the best title for the text?
A.The Role of Urgency in Task Completion
B.Strategies for Managing Various Deadlines
C.Influences of Delay on Work Quality
D.The Power of Deadlines in Task Management

In Hangzhou's Linping District,a friendly AI assistant named "Little Rainbow"is quietly
changing how citizens interact with the government.Powered by DeepSeek-R1,an advanced Chinese
AI model, this system handles over 1,000 daily inquiries-from explaining policies to guiding
paperwork-with 95%accuracy.
Imagine needing to apply for a student scholarship but feeling lost in complicated rules. With

messages.When a user writes,"I'm frustrated with this process!","Little Rainbow"responds with
patience and extra clear explanations.
Hangzhou's "Little Rainbow"is more than a convenience-it's a window into an Al-driven

Patience Is a Virtue
In the Paris Olympic Games,Dutch runner Sifan Hassan realized one of the most outstanding

to claim front-running positions early,Hassan held back and conserved her energy. She waited to

colors and shapes. The flowers had been there all along,in various stages, from seed to blossom(
)making progress beneath the dirt.Patience is a lot like a wildflower field.39
But
waiting well often involves a lot of determination and unseen work.
40
_Philosopher Matthew Pianalto calls patience a foundational virtue. He cites a
