1.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a dream born in fire. Andrea Peterson was 5 when she was trapped on the ledge (窗台) of a burning building.
“Throw the kid down!” said one of the firemen below, whose eyes are firm and courageous, along with professional rescue techniques. Seeing this, little Andrea jumped into lifesaving arms and a life-long ambition: She wanted to fight fires as her rescuers did.
She told that to the men who had saved her, and they laughed naturally the way grown-ups do when a kid says he wants to be an astronaut or a sports star. But this was back in a time when little girls weren’t even allowed to fantasize (幻想) about such grand goals.
“You’ll be a good mommy,” the firemen told her. “You’ll be a good teacher, maybe you’ll be a nurse, but you can never be a fireman.”
Indeed, life sidelined her ambitious dream. She was studying for a degree in aviation technology (航空科技) and that’s where she met her husband, Dennis. Unfortunately, Dennis was diagnosed with cancer. Peterson spent 31 years caring for the man she loved, and in 2007, when Dennis was about to leave, he was at peace but worried for her. “But what are you going to do?” “I’ll be fine,” she told him.
At 61, she attended a course for emergencies. She went on an ambulance ride-along from time to time. It turned out to be a life-and-death situation, which reminded her of the childhood experience back in the fire. But every time she saw people who were in need were successfully rescued, Peterson felt that long-ago childhood calling. She earned her emergency medical technician license and responded to fire calls with the ambulance. She found that her years of tending to Dennis had prepared her for dealing with the variety of hurts and ills. The inside calling echoed increasingly stronger.

Aram and Rossi’s Bakery
Walking along the narrow brick sidewalk, Aram took a deep breath. The air smelled of lemons and baked bread and coffee, coming from Rossi’s Italian Bakery. He was almost there.
Aram still couldn’t believe his luck. All his friends were working boring summer jobs—waiting tables and babysitting. And here he was, about to start as an actual baker’s assistant, doing what he loved. It was all thanks to his Aunt Rita. She knew Mrs Rossi and had arranged everything. It was the perfect experience for his future career. Rossi’s Bakery, he was sure, would one day be known as the place where he got his start.
Ah, here he was—the bakery. A faded wooden sign over the door read “Rossi’s Bakery.” Aram straightened his shoulders and entered. Mrs Rossi was sitting at the counter, looking old and wise. Aram greeted her and stuck out his hand. Mrs Rossi looked at it for a second before turning around and waving him inside. “I’m ready to learn everything,” Aram said.
“Great. Let’s start with the cash register,” Mrs Rossi said, “because that’s what you’ll be doing.” She showed him how to use the cash register. It wasn’t hard. The pastry trays were all marked by price, and there weren’t that many choices anyway. “That’s it?” Aram said, his heart sinking. “But when do we bake?”
“Bake? I order wholesale now. No more baking. I’m too old.” Then Mrs Rossi silently held up her hands. Aram took in her knotted, swollen fingers, and he understood. A wave of disappointment struck him. Sadness overwhelmed him so suddenly that he couldn’t think of a word to say.
He sighed, and Mrs Rossi sighed, too. “I used to bake it all. Bread and cakes. And no one did it better than me. But that was when these things worked,” said Mrs Rossi holding up her hands once more and glancing across the shelves filled with empty bottles labelled with names of the various ingredients (配料) she once used. Suddenly she came alive, waving her arthritic (关节炎的) hands. “People used to line up around the corner. Everyone wanted my baked bread.”

The science teacher, Mr. Moose, decided that the school would have a paper airplane contest. Each student would design a paper airplane. And then they would take turns throwing their airplanes. The student whose airplane flew the farthest would win.
When Mr. Moose announced the paper airplane contest, all the students were very excited. Paul, who was on the wrestling team, said to other students: “I am the strongest. And I will be able to throw my airplane the farthest.”
However, another student, Brian, was thinking how he could win. He did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest.
Brian knew what he had to do. He went to the store and bought a big stack of paper. When he got home, he took the paper into the backyard. He took a piece of paper and folded an airplane. It didn't go very far, so Brian took another sheet and folded another airplane and threw it. This airplane went a little farther. Brian kept folding different kinds of airplanes and throwing them. Some went very far and some did not. Finally, when Brian had used all the paper, he walked up to the airplane that had flown the farthest and picked it up.

4.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On a cold morning in late November, two police officers were patrolling the downtown streets. Suddenly, the walkie-talkie (对讲机) on Jake, one of the officers, came to life. “There’s been a break-in at the Corner Bookstore. Please go there right away,” said the voice.
The two officers quickly went to the bookstore but saw no clear signs of a break-in. However, when they looked at the security footage (监控录像), they saw a young, thin man breaking a window and entering the store at around 3:00 am. Instead of taking money or valuable items, he went to the back, filled a bag with children’s books and school supplies, and then ran away.
Confused by the strange theft, the officers decided to investigate further. A store worker recognized the thief as Sam, a local boy who often helped at the community center and had a hard home life.
When they got to Sam’s house, Jake was ready for trouble, but his partner, Lisa, suggested they talk first. “Let’s try talking,” she said. She gently knocked on the door.
Sam’s mother answered, looking tired and worried. Seeing the officers, Sam, who was just inside, hung his head in shame, already knowing why they were there. “Mom, is someone here to see us?” came a small voice from behind her. A young girl appeared, holding one of the stolen books.

The school festival was buzzing with excitement, all because of a new contest called “Innovate Your Way.” This contest was all about making a costume that was as unique and creative as possible, showcasing what one loves the most.
Lily Adams was surrounded by classmates with cool ideas. One classmate said excitedly, “I’m going to be the whole solar system, with planets circling around me!” One boasted (吹嘘), “I’ll redefine innovation. I will become a walking smartphone from the future, showing the digital age with interactive apps and games.”
Meanwhile, another one came up with the idea to dress up as a live weather forecast. He planned to attach LED screens to his outfit, displaying different weather patterns. This costume would not just show the weather but also change with real-time updates, combining technology and creativity in a way the festival had never seen.
Feeling overwhelmed, Lily wasn’t sure what to do. Her friends had such amazing ideas, and she hadn’t even picked a costume yet. She shared her worries with her friend Noah, saying,” I can’t make up my mind. Every idea seems too hard to do or just not exciting enough.”
Noah, always wise, had a great suggestion. “Why don’t you make a costume about gardening? You love it, and it’s something unique to you,” he said. Lily was unsure because the contest was just a few days away. “I don’t know if there’s enough time to make something like that from the beginning,” she worried. But Noah encouraged her, “You have a special talent for making something wonderful out of simple things. Use what’s around you.”
Inspired by Noah’s words, Lily thought over her collection of plants and flowers. Arriving home, she noticed the pile of old gardening magazines and a forgotten green tarp(防水布)in the garage.

Alex is a 10-year-old boy who lives in the quiet Canadian town of Willowbrook. Despite coming from a family with little money, he was enthusiastic about learning and did well in his subjects. His mother, who worked as a nurse, is a living example of self-sufficiency and was his biggest supporter after his father left them.
One of his classmates, Jake, who comes from a better-off family and thinks himself cleverer than any other person, always makes cruel jokes about Alex’s worn-out trainers and second-hand jacket at school. Although he sometimes feels depressed, Alex never lets this stop him from loving school and doing his best.
One afternoon, during a survival skills class at school, Alex listened attentively as the teacher, Mr. Brown, an experienced outdoorsman, showed the class how to make a spark from a flint (打火石).“In survival situations,” the teacher said, “it’s not just about the physical, it’s about the mental strength to keep going.” Alex took these words to heart, his eyes shining with interest.
On a school trip to the nearby forest, Alex and his classmates, including Jake, went on a hike. As the group went deeper into the forest, the undergrowth grew thicker and Alex found himself separated from the others. But it was Jake who really got lost. He wandered off the trail because he was proud and wanted to prove that he could navigate the forest on his own.
As evening approached, Jake’s confidence began to slip and he found himself alone in the dark. Panic began to set in. He felt remorseful (懊悔的) and helpless and began to call for help in a shaky voice. That’s when Alex, who had been looking for a way back to the trail, found him. Jake, who was usually the one to make fun of him, was now standing there, looking humble and scared. His pride had been replaced by a look of concern.
“Hey, Jake, it’s going to be OK,” Alex said, his voice calm and reassuring. “We’ll get through this together.”

My friend Carole’s birthday was approaching and I wondered what to give her as a gift. I had two pots of beautiful flowers and I knew Carole liked flowers. However, the two pots of flowers were rare and I brought them from a forest very far away, which took me great effort. So, I hesitated.
There wasn’t a cloud in the sky on one warm June morning when Carol e and I started out for a day of shopping. We had learned of a quilt (被子) shop which had unique quilts created by skilled women from a nearby company. Carole’s heart was set on finding a blue- and- white quilt to put the finishing touch on her guest bedroom.
We parked the car next to the only traffic light in town, heading towards the quilt shop. But next door, a newly opened small store that sold pretty clothes, shoes, etc. attracted us. So we first walked into this store, where we admired the most wonderful collection of umbrella s we had ever seen. As I ran my fingers across one special umbrella, I heard myself whisper, “These are the most beautiful umbrellas...”I loved the items so much.
A sales clerk hurried to my side. “Perhaps you’d like to try one of them out,” she suggested. I opened the attractive umbrella. Underneath it, I felt wonderfully carefree and sheltered from the whole world. But with new things to buy, there was no money for expensive umbrellas. Besides, even if I could afford one, it wouldn’t be a practical purchase. Back in the second grade, I had once eyed a beautiful, pink umbrella in a department store window. “I need a beautiful umbrella,” I said to my mother. “No, you need a practical umbrella,” she said. “Besides, you might lose it.” With tears in my eyes, I put down that pink umbrella!
Coming back from my memory, I told the clerk, “Thanks for showing me the umbrella.” Then, I headed next door to the quilt shop, a few steps ahead of Carole.

Lena could clearly remember the night she had to flee her home in Hungary. It was the beginning of the Second World War and her family needed to escape fast. She quickly packed a suitcase with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and-her most prized possession - a beautiful silk scarf. Lena and her best friend, Monika, had persuaded their parents to buy them matching scarves, which they each wore tied around their neck as a symbol of their friendship. Lena had no idea that when she left for America that night, she would never return. Her family settled on the sunny west coast in California.
Lena kept that special silk scarf for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Lena was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but her granddaughter reassured her, “Don’t worry, Grandma nothing’s going to happen to your scarf. You’ll see, It is going to bring both of us luck today.” With that, Eliza kissed her grandmother on the cheek and left.
That afternoon, Eliza left the interview feeling confident that she had got the job-She decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. As she sat at her table, she felt someone staring at her.
Sitting next to her was an elderly woman who could not take her eyes off her. “I’m sorry, do I know you?” Eliza asked.
“I’m sorry, dear, but you remind me of someone I once knew,” the old woman replied in an accented voice. “My best friend looked like you and used to wear a scarf just like the one you’re wearing around your neck.” Eliza felt goose bumps go up her arms. It was an ordinary weekend. The supermarket was crowded with shoppers grabbing their weekly groceries. I was no exception, purchasing fresh produce and a few comfort food items, and then I reached the checkout line. As the cashier scanned my items and I reached for my wallet, my heart sank. It was missing. No cash, no cards, just an empty pocket and a growing sense of panic.
“I’m so sorry,” I stammered (结结巴巴地说), my face burning red as I began to gather my groceries, ready to make my embarrassed retreat.
But a calm voice from behind interrupted my retreat. “No worries at all,” a stranger said in a comforting tone. “I’ll cover this.”‘
I turned to see a woman with kind eyes and a warm smile, holding out her card to the cashier. She had a cart full of her own groceries, yet here she was, offering to pay for a stranger’s mistake.
“Are you sure?” I asked, my voice filled with a mix of gratitude and disbelief.
“Absolutely,” she replied. “But I’ll need something from you in return.”
“Anything, ”I said, ready to do whatever it took to repay her kindness.
“Promise me you’ll pay it forward,” she said, her gaze (目光) meeting mine with a sincerity that touched my heart.
I nodded, my promise as firm as the resolve to make a difference. “I promise.”
As I left the store with my groceries, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had just been given a gift—a chance to make a difference in someone else’s life.
Months later, I found myself driving through a quiet countryside, the scenery passing by peacefully. Up ahead, I noticed a lone figure by the roadside, a backpacker with her thumb out, trying to ask for a ride. Car after car sped past, leaving her in their dust. Something about her lone figure touched my heart.

For the first two years in primary school, I was an extremely shy girl. I had a few friends, but it wasn’t easy for me to be very outgoing, even if I knew them well. If I was with strangers, I was even quieter. So I was not good at meeting new people, I was in constant fear that I would do or say something wrong. As a result, on our school’s annual play day, I usually sat in a remote corner to watch the performance alone, although I hoped to sit in the front rows to see the actors more clearly.
One day in the third grade, my teacher Mrs. Sally called me into her office and said, “Oh, Mary, you’re great at memorizing things, and you have such a sweet voice. You are perfect for Jenny!”
But I bowed my head and dared not speak. The teacher saw this and then said, “Of course, plenty of girls would love the role, and I could find somebody else. But I hope you could try it for me. I had you in mind for Jenny while writing the play! If you really don’t want to, you can turn down the offer.”
My mind was running wild when Mrs. Sally, whom I loved and admired, asked me to play the role.
“She believes in me!” I thought.
Just then I looked up and happened to see on the wall a poster I had never noticed before. It showed a shooting star and read, “If you reach for the stars, you might at least grab a piece of the moon.”
Realizing it was time to throw off my shy mask and show the world who I really was, I said firmly, “Okay, I’ll try my best, Mrs. Sally!”
In the following five months, Mrs. Sally taught me how to put on makeup, memorize lines, create costumes and so on.

I was never a fast runner and thus I always didn’t like running. Throughout my childhood, whenever we competed in the 50-meter run, the 400-meter, or any other type of race, I would finish in the bottom half. In my late teens, as a member of a baseball team, I was the slowest runner on the team. In the preseason training, I was always the one running by myself at the end.
Therefore, twenty years later, when I entered my first official running race — a 3,000-meter challenge in my city — at age 38, I certainly didn’t expect to win or come close to winning.
I was there because my college friend Jim Hosek was the director of the race, and he asked me to run. The race was aimed at raising money for the unfortunate patients in a hospital and encouraging the patients and their fanilies to be brave, determined, and confident with sportsmanship.
It was a heartwarming program.I wanted to support it, so I showed up, paid the entrance fee, had a number pinned (把……别住) on my back, and moved over to the starting line. There, I waited with about 300 other runners for the race to begin. I was nervous. Would I be the last one to finish a race again? Could I even finish the race? I wondered.
Before long, someone spoke into a microphole, “Anyone weighing over 200 pounds comes down to the scale (秤), please.” Knowing I was over 200 pounds, I walked down to the scale. A man told me to stand on it. “Two hundred and three pounds,” he said. Then he wrote down the race number that was on my back. Out of curiosity, I asked him why he did so,and then I was told there would be an award ceremony (仪式) after the race. One award was for the first finisher in the over 200-pound group, and this special award would be announced at the end of the ceremony.
Not expecting the award, I ran towards the starting line, never realizing there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds.

Ally worked with her mother in their vegetable garden every day. The produce from their garden was sold at market. This was how they made their living. Ally’s job was to make sure the plants were never too dry. Each day Ally carefully watered any plant that needed water. Ally helped take care of the garden in other ways, too, so the vegetables would be healthy and ready for the market. Ally often pretended the plants were beautiful roses, like Mrs. Smith’s prize flowers.
“Foolish girl!” her mother spoke angrily. “Flowers can’t be eaten!”
“But Mother, people buy flowers.”
“No one in our poor village wastes money so foolishly. Look after the vegetables. That’s our living.”
Ally knew her mother was right. The only person in the village who made money selling flowers was Mrs. Smith. She grew roses and sold them to flower shops in Austin. Every year she won first prize at the Austin Rose Festival.
Ally envied Mrs. Smith. If she could sell flowers like Mrs. Smith, she would be able to buy things for her mother. But roses were expensive to start, and Ally could only dream about growing them.
One day, Ally visited Mrs. Smith to see her flowers again. Mrs. Smith was inspecting her roses when she arrived. The garden of flowers springing up thrilled Ally. How she wished she could grow such flowers! And even win a prize at the festival!
Mrs. Smith broke her daydream. “Child, come to see the flowers again? Do you know what’s required to grow such flowers?” She chuckled. “Stick to your vegetables.”
Mrs. Smith returned to her gardening, ignoring the sad look on Ally’s face. Then she pulled up what looked like a weed (野草).
“What’s that?” Ally asked.
“A weak plant. Unworthy of my time.” Mrs. Smith said before throwing it over the fence into the field beside the garden.

The Words of Kindness
Last week, I was shopping in the local supermarket. My 24-year-old daughter happened to be with me as she had just arrived home for a much-needed visit because she was going to work abroad for six months. As we were walking through the aisles (走道) and picking things she needed, we heard a child’s crying that would last more than fifteen minutes. I wanted to walk over to investigate the situation, already picturing the scene in my mind. No doubt, the cries of the young boy could be heard clearly across the store.
My daughter came up to me and said, “Mom! Is that what I sounded like when I was little?”
“Yes, Rach, you sounded just like that,” I replied.
We tried to continue our shopping, but the loud cries made by the boy who was asking his mom for something continued for what felt like no ending. Several more minutes went by, and the boy just wouldn’t stop. I felt it necessary to follow the cries. As I approached the aisle, I could see several people watching us at the other end of the aisle, talking to each other and shaking their heads. They would walk away and then turn around with their carts (购物车) to continue their talks and figure out what was happening.
I arrived at the aisle to find a twenty-something mother standing in the middle of the aisle calmly telling the boy, “No.” She was not going to get whatever the boy wanted. He was holding his mother’s arms, crying, trying to get her to move. His face turned red with tears. He remained seated on the floor and beat at his mom’s legs with his arms while crying at the top of his voice.

Surprise (times two)!
My friend Ollie has lived with his grandmother, Abuela, since he was a baby. Abuela is the kindest, smartest, funniest person imaginable! On the morning of Mother's Day, I invited them to my house for a party.
“I love any kind of party if there's a cake!” Ollie said.
“Of course.” I chuckled, “I made a card for my mom, but I still want to find some present to go with it”. Ollie also wanted to buy roses for Abuela, but everything is so expensive at the flower store that he can barely afford a leaf!
Just then, our neighbor, Mrs. Nishikawa who was watering her garden, waved and called, “Good morning, kiddos!” Ollie waved back. “Good morning, Mrs. Nishikawa! Your garden is always so pretty.”
“Oy! It's a mess.” She groaned. “My back has been acting up, and I haven't weeded for days.” Ollie and I were eager to offer help. Half an hour later, both of us had a big pile of weeds. Mrs. Nishikawa smiled and said we could choose whatever flowers we liked for Mother's day bouquets (花束).
We clipped, arranged, and wrapped everything in big sheets of sparkly paper and string. Ollie and I both said that these look just as good as the ones at the store and even better.
As we headed back with flowers in arms, we came up with a plan. Nobody would think to look in my bedroom closet, a perfect place to hide these, except my two cats. It was a good idea that at the exact right time, we would shout “Surprise!” and amaze everybody. But you know perfect plans don't always work out perfectly.
Everybody elegantly sipped tea and not-so-elegantly gobbled cake. Then we took turns saying things we loved and appreciated about Abuela and my mom. Right when they were chatting, Ollie and I snuck (溜走) off to get our surprise.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy -his name was Bernard-had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish (完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn (爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 After a year, she signed up for a training unit for firefighters. No sooner had she stepped into the training venue than she found all her classmates were 18-22 young kids. “Could I really make it?” Peterson thought to herself, struggling. At the very moment, she was once again thought of the firm and courageous eyes of the firefighters who came to rescue her over 50 years ago. She instantly rolled up her sleeves and began to learn both theoretical and practical knowledge as her much younger peers.
Finally came the written and physical fitness test day. For Peterson, she was at an advantageous situation for the theoretical part, as her past rescue experiences on ambulance ride-along made her a qualified rescuer already. However, the 3-km running, push-ups, sit-ups, etc. all behaved as huge gaps awaiting her to conquer. Though she ranked the last among such items, her persistence, endurance as well as the passion for a childhood dream made her name appear on the list of newly-announced firefighters. This time, tears blurred her eyes, as the dream born in the fire was eventually fulfilled.

【答案】Then a thought occurred to Aram that he could ask Mrs Rossi to teach him. But he was not sure whether Mrs Rossi liked the idea or not. Thinking that if he didn't put it forward, he would be dealing with the boring cash register for the whole summer, Aram hesitated no more. “Mrs Rossi, I'm wondering if I could have the privilege to be your apprentice.” Mrs Rossi looked at him and then his hands. Aram continued. “I was fascinated by the pure magic with which you mixed those ingredients and turned them into pieces of art. Would you teach me to be your magical hands?” Aram’s eyes glittered with passion.
Mrs Rossi finally said, “Let’s buy the ingredients first.” On hearing this, Aram felt over the moon. Delightedly, they shut the door and headed for the supermarket. Two hours later those empty bottles were full again. With the long options ingredients inside, Mrs Rossi seemed as overjoyed and hopeful as Aram. At the end of the summer, neighbors were seen lining up round the corner outside the Rossi’s. Two years later, a new wooden sign was hung over the door, reading “Aram and Rossi’s Bakery”.
【分析】本文是记叙文。文章以人物为线索展开,讲述了Mrs Rossi因年岁已高,无法打理自己的面包店,但打暑期工的Aram诚心拜师学艺,并与Rossi一起成功拯救面包店的故事。

Finally, it was Brian's turn. Brian took the airplane that he had folded the day before. He walked up to the line and, with all his strength, he threw the plane. It went flying, farther and farther, until finally it landed 10 feet past Paul's plane! The whole school cheered. Brian won the contest. Mr Moose gave him a prize:a toy airplane.
第二段:
Brian won because he tried out many solutions to the problem of how to make an airplane fly very far. He did this by testing out many different designs and comparing the results. When he found the design that worked best and the paper airplane that flew the farthest, he was happy to use it.

【答案】 Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Jake softened and stepped inside. He saw the poor conditions the family lived in — barely any furniture and a noticeable lack of basic needs. The little girl, not understanding how serious her brother’s actions were, smiled brightly and offered the officers a cookie from a small jar she had saved. Seeing this, Jake turned to Lisa and said quietly, “We can’t take him in, not now.”
Lisa nodded in agreement and asked, “What about the stolen books?” After a moment of thought, Jake replied, “I’ll pay for them.” He then took Sam and his mother to the bookstore, explained the situation to the owner, and paid for the books. The owner, moved by the story, decided to drop charges and even offered Sam a part-time job to help support his family. Grateful and relieved, Sam and his mother thanked the officers and the bookstore owner many times. As they left, Jake felt a deep sense of satisfaction, knowing they had made a difference. What a wonderful world indeed!

She spent hours perfecting her creation, adding little details here and there until it was just right.
The day of the contest finally arrived. Lily was nervous as she walked onto the stage, but as soon as she saw the look of amazement on the judges’ faces, she knew she had made the right choice. Her costume was unlike anything anyone had ever seen before. It was a living, breathing garden, complete with real plants and flowers. The judges were blown away by her creativity and originality, and Lily won first place in the contest! From that day on, Lily felt more confident in herself and her abilities. She realized that it’s important to follow your passions and do what you love.

【答案】Alex remembered the survival skills he had learned in the survival classes. He quickly gathered fallen branches and dry leaves to create a small fire. Using the flint, he struck it against a rock until a spark ignited the tinder. The flickering light illuminated the darkness, giving Jake some sense of comfort. Alex then led Jake to a safe spot where they could wait for the rescue team. The boys talked quietly, sharing stories and jokes to keep their spirits up. Alex told Jake that no one was better than anyone else, just different, and that being kind to others was more important than being clever.
Alex looked at Jake, surprised but touched by the sincerity in his voice. He had never seen Jake so vulnerable or humble. Jake thanked Alex for finding him and apologized for his past bullying. He promised to be a better friend from now on. Alex nodded, accepting the apology with a smile. As the night deepened, the boys heard the distant sound of rescue helicopters. They cheered and waved their arms, signaling their location. As they were reunited with their classmates and teachers, Alex felt a sense of accomplishment washing over him. He had not only survived the ordeal, but he had also helped someone in need, and in doing so, had gained a true friend.

【答案】When her steps caught up with mine, I noticed a long, thin box under her arm. “What’s that?” I asked, curious. Carole smiled mysteriously and handed me the box. “Open it,” she said. Inside was the very umbrella I had admired in the store. “Happy early birthday!” Carole exclaimed. I was speechless. “But… how did you know?” I stammered. “I saw the way you looked at it,” she replied. “I wanted to give you something special, just like you always do for me.” Tears welled up in my eyes as I hugged her tightly. “Thank you, Carole. This means so much to me.”
Back home, I took the umbrella sent by Carole and walked towards my flowers. I realized that the joy of giving was far greater than the effort it took to obtain those flowers. With a smile, I carefully dug up one of the pots and placed it in a beautiful gift bag. The next day, I visited Carole and handed her the bag. “Happy birthday, Carole,” I said. Her eyes lit up as she saw the rare flowers. “These are beautiful! Thank you so much!” she exclaimed. As we sat together, admiring our gifts, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for our friendship and the simple joys it brought into our lives.

She had heard stories of her grandmother’s best friend and knew the significance of the scarf. Could this be Monika, her grandmother’s childhood friend?

【答案】 Eliza introduced herself and waited to hear the name of the other woman. “My name’s Monika, dear. ” “I’m originally from Hungary, but my family had to leave and I’ve been living here ever since.” Eliza could not believe it, stories of her grandmother’s best friend floating into her mind. Assuming that the old woman must be her grandmother’s best friend, she said, “Monika, would you mind coming with me right now? I need to show you somebody.” The old woman agreed. On the way, Monika felt her heart was thumping with excitement.
They walked the short distance to Lena’s home and rang the doorbell. Arriving at Lena’s home, Monika eagerly rang the door bell. The moment Lena opened the door, she was rooted to the ground due to the amazement at seeing her childhood friend standing in front of her. Although their faces showed signs of age, the two best friends recognized each other immediately. Both of them were in tears, hugging each other tightly. Time seemed to cease to witness the great moment. The two of them talked for a long time afterwards, reminiscing about their past events.

【答案】
I slowed down and pulled over. “Need a lift?” I asked, rolling down the window. Her face lit up with relief and gratitude. “Yes, please,” she said, climbing into my car. We chatted as we drove. She told me that she had waited there for hours. She was about to give up when I stopped. And she told me her stories of adventure and excitement. When she mentioned she was short on funds and needed to get home, I knew what I had to do.
As we parted, I handed her some cash and said, “For your bus ticket home.” “I can’t take this,” she refused, her eyes wide with surprise. “You can,” I insisted. “And one day, when you can, pay it forward.” Then we parted. As I continued my drive, I was filled with a renewed sense of purpose and a heart full of hope. I know I choose to pay it forward, not for recognition or reward, but because I believe in the power of kindness to change lives, one small act at a time.

The big day arrived at last. I hurried all the way to the backstage of the school hall, where cameras were lighting up in all directions. Looking back on the five months of hard work, I found a new and confident person inside me. I eventually became a much more daring and outgoing person than I had been before. However, when I was about to go onto stage, my heart kept pounding so hard that my throat tightened and my knees felt weak.
At the moment, Mrs. Sally noticed my nervousness and approached me. “It doesn’t matter how you do tonight,” she comforted me. “You’ve already shown how wonderful you are.” Looking into Mrs. Sally’s shining blue eyes, I calmed down and then walked onto the stage with her warm words like a ray of sunshine. When I finished my performance, the audience burst into applause. Facing the cheering audience, I knew that it was Mrs. Sally’s encouragement that helped me find the confidence to succeed.

Paragraph 1:
Soon after, the race started.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Then came the last award, and to my surprise, my name was announced.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Soon after, the race started. While I was running, I saw many runners pass me on the way. Minutes later, I already felt tired. However, to encourage those in need, I tried to show the best of me, without worrying about the result. I kept moving forward as fast as I could. After most runners finished the race, I finally made it to the finish line. Despite the tiredness, I was satisfied. Shortly after the race, the award ceremony began and several awards were presented.
Then came the last award, and to my surprise, my name was announced. Confused and excited, I walked up to the winner’s platform and was awarded a medal. As the crowd cheered and clapped loudly, I felt warmth in my heart. After the ceremony, I learned from my friend Jim that there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds. Although I only beat one person, Jim praised me for my determination, courage, and kindness. Honestly, I was proud of myself. This race increased my love for running and my confidence in myself.

12.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Paragraph 2: On festival morning, Ally went to greet her own little plant as usual.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范例1:
Ally smiled and had an idea. She rushed over to the field and carefully picked up the discarded plant. It was delicate, with tiny roots that seemed like they might not survive. Ally took the plant home and found a small, sunny spot in the garden where it wouldn’t be disturbed. She planted it there, promising herself to give it the best care she could. Each day, after watering the vegetables, she tended to her little plant, talking to it and dreaming about what it could become. With time, the plant began to grow stronger, and Ally’s hopes grew with it.
On festival morning, Ally went to greet her own little plant as usual. She was astonished to find it had bloomed into a beautiful rose. So excited she was that she decided to invite Mrs. Smith to have a look. Mrs Smith was just about to leave for the contest. At the sight of beautiful rose, her eyes widened in surprise. “Where did you get that rose?” Mrs. Smith asked. Ally proudly explained how she had nurtured the discarded plant. Mrs. Smith smiled warmly, saying, “You are a great gardener. Perhaps next year, you can grow your own roses and enter the festival.” Ally’s heart swelled with pride and joy. She knew she was one step closer to making her dreams come true and providing a better life for her mother.范例2:
Ally smiled and had an idea. She looked at the discarded plant Mrs. Smith had thrown away. Maybe this wasn’t a weed at all. With a spark in her eye, Ally carefully retrieved the plant and brought it back to her own garden. She nurtured it with great love and care, watering it daily and ensuring it got plenty of sunlight. As the days passed, the plant began to bloom, revealing its true identity: a beautiful red rose plant with buds!
On festival morning, Ally went to greet her own little plant as usual. She was amazed to see a stunning cluster of roses in bloom. Her heart was filled with joy as she took it to Mrs. Smith. Mrs. Smith got stunned at the wonderful roses and offered to take Ally to the festival. To Ally’s surprise, she won the first prize! She had grown her own roses! Flowers could indeed be a valuable addition to their livelihood, even for a poor village girl like her.范例3:
Ally smiled and has an idea. After saying goodbye to Mrs. Smith, she went out of the garden gate. Ally bent over, took the tired plant and rushed home. She transplanted it at a quiet spot behind their cottage, which was secret and a perfect place for it to grow. She tendered it every morning and evening, watering and even talking to it. To her pleasure, each time Ally visited her little plant, it looked greener and taller.
On festival morning, Ally went to greet her own little plant as usual. At the sight of her little flower, she slammed to a stop, and almost tripped her own feet. It was in full blossom, dwarfing Mrs. Smith’s grandest flowers! Ally screamed with delight. Hearing that, her mother came rushing to see what had happened and gasped at its beauty as well. Ally persuaded her mother to take the flower to the festival. To her great joy, her plant won the first prize! The prize money Ally won was used to buy the starter plants for her garden. She knew that devotion is the secret to realizing dreams.

【答案】
I walked over to the mom and touched her arm. I told her she was doing a great job and that everything would be OK one day. I then called my daughter over and introduced her to the young mother. I explained that my daughter had been just like her son when she was that age. I told her that my daughter often drove me crazy when she was young. “I know exactly what you are dealing with right now, and I know how you feel,” I said. “It does get better. Believe me, it really does.”
At that moment, I could see relief wash over her. Her son stopped crying for a minute and looked at us with a confused expression. His momentary silence gave us a chance to share a few words. I told her that she was an amazing mom, and her son would thank her for being his mom someday. She smiled and thanked me for the kind words. Parents who have a child with special needs just need a kind word to know that everything will be OK. Sometimes, that’s all it takes.

【答案】“NO!” I yelled as soon as our cats dashed out of the bedroom. The sight that met my eyes was both amusing and a little heartbreaking. While our carefully crafted bouquets were now a chaotic blend of petals and stems scattered all over the floor, the cats were completely unaware of the mess they had caused. Ollie and I stood there, momentarily stunned, as our surprise was unveiled in the most unexpected way. The guests, including Abuela and my mom, quickly rose from their seats, trying to contain the playful cats and also attempting to rescue what was left of the bouquets.
“How can you get so beautiful flowers?” Abuela and my mom asked. Ollie and I exchanged a knowing look before bursting into laughter. “Well, it's a funny surprise actually,” I began, recounting our story with Mrs. Nishikawa. Abuela and my mom couldn't help but join in our laughter, their eyes sparkling with amusement. “Tomorrow, I will tell Mrs. Nishikawa what happened to her flowers,” Ollie joked. As we all sat together, talking about the surprises, we knew that the true gift of Mother's Day was the love and laughter we shared as a family.

【答案】When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too. So, they went to the local supermarket together. They bought some special bags for popcorn. When they got home, they made a lot of popcorn and put it in the special bags. With the popcorn, they went to Bernard’s home. They told Bernard how to sell the popcorn. Bernard and his parents were very grateful. And the Meredith family also felt very happy to help this family.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. He took the popcorn around to the houses and sold all his popcorn. He earned a lot of money. Then, he wanted to be self-dependent. Therefore, he asked Mrs. Meredith to teach him how to make popcorn. After that, not only did he sell popcorn, but he also added cream and salt to the popcorn to make it taste better. Bernard grew up to be a remarkable man. He did not forget the help of Meredith’s family, and he also did what he could to help those in need.
