I learnt to swim when I was a teenager. I went to the local swimming pool with my two sisters. It was old and cold and not very nice. I can still remember my instructor: his name was Colin Firth, like the actor. But he wasn’t as good-looking!

—Geoffrey Hopkins
One day I was standing by the deep end of the swimming pool and I suddenly fell in. I don’t know how I did it but I managed to get to the side. I was coughing but I could swim! My brother saw me when I got out and thought it was very funny. But he didn’t laugh when I hit him.
—Karen Marks
My first experience of swimming was when I was 8 or 9 years old. I was on a small boat with about ten other boys. It was very small and someone pushed me in the water. The water was very clean and I could see everything. I remember feeling very peaceful and comfortable, and I wasn’t worried at all. I started swimming, not very well, but another boy helped me to return to the beach.

A cafe owner has been delivering free soup for one year to a stranger going through chemotherapy (化疗). He serves up much more than meals — he has spent the last year serving up kindness to a stranger who loved his cooking.
Juan Carlos Beristain runs JC’s Cafe in Cary, Illinois. In addition to making coffee, the 49-year-old man is famous for serving up many delicious soups. Noah Dionesotes is just one of the local people who adore Beristain’s soups. Being in poor health, Dionesotes has been depending on the soups as a valuable source of nutrition (营养来源) throughout his chemotherapy treatments.
Beristain learned of Dionesotes’s health problems sometime last year after he saw a neighbor’s Facebook post about the man’s condition — and his love for the cafe’s soups. Beristain filled up a few cups of fresh soup at once and brought them to Dionesotes’s house.
Dionesotes was surprised to find Beristain on his doorstep with food in hand — and he was even more shocked when Beristain told him not to worry about payment.
Ever since that first meeting Beristain has been delivering free soup to Dionesotes’s house as often as four times per week for the last year.
“I really feel it when other people are in pain,” Beristain said. “I felt that I could help him at least by delivering the soup that he likes, with the nutrition that is going to help him.”
Though Dionesotes’s friends are now trying to raise money for his next round of chemotherapy treatments, he says that Beristain’s kindness has been a very helpful kind of treatment for his illness.
“I think he’s a great human,” said Dionesotes.

One Concern is an AI company in California. It is using machine learning and AI to help firefighters. The company hopes its software can make exact predictions about earthquake damage. It can tell firefighters how to plan for an earthquake and how to do their jobs better when it happens.
Nicole Hu, a technology officer from One Concern, says the key is to feed the computers a lot of data (数据) about an area. The data may include information about homes and other buildings, the natural environment, and the size of an earthquake. The computers then use the information to make predictions about what would happen if there were an earthquake in the area. It then uses data from past earthquakes to see whether its predictions are any good, and changes its predictive models accordingly.
Gregory Deierlein, earthquake engineer at the Stanford University, says one of the most surprising things about the company’s software is its ability to make use of data from an earthquake as it’s happening, and to change its predictions in real time.
In the past, researchers would collect data after an event and a few years later they’d produce new models, says Deierlein. Now the new models appear in a matter of minutes.
Dan Ghiorso leads the Woodside Fire Protection District near San Francisco, which covers about 32 square miles. He says in the past, when an earthquake hit, he’d have to make educated guesses (based on experience and training) about what parts of his district might be badly damaged and then drive to each place to have a look around. He hopes One Concern’s software will change that. “Instead of driving thirty-two square miles, in fifteen minutes on a computer I can get a good idea of the damage,” he says. “Instead of me taking my educated guess, they’re putting science behind the predictive models.”
61. What do we know about the software’s predictions?
A. They can be made before and during an earthquake.
B. They are based on data from many different areas.
C. They are about when an earthquake may happen.
D. They can tell people the size of an earthquake.
62 What is an advantage of the software according to Deierlein?
A. It has many different uses. B. It is sold at very low prices.
C. It can make predictions very fast. D. It can be used by common people.
63. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. How to save people during earthquakes. B. How to train firefighters to make guesses.
C. How Ghiorso looks at new predictive models. D. How Ghiorso gets to know earthquake damage.
64. How does Ghiorso feel about the new technology?
A. Worried. B. Hopeful. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.
65. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To introduce the software developed by One Concern.
B. To tell us how to reduce earthquake damage.
C. To tell us how software works.
D. To introduce a promising company.
第Ⅱ卷(共35分)
第四部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
My son was entering Grade 1. He was a bit nervous because he knew his best friend would not be in his new class. I explained to him that even though his best friend would not be in his class, he would still have some of his old classmates.
On the first day of school when the class list was posted, I was shocked! My son had zero former classmates in his class. None. Not one.
How could this happen?
I asked my friend who works with the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board. She explained, “Many largely populated schools often shuffle (弄混) the kids around each year to encourage new friendships.”
If schools are actively trying to place two best friends in different classes simply to shake things up, I think it is a blunder.
I was lucky enough to attend the same primary school all the way through. It was a small class and our group of students moved through each grade together. We felt like brothers and sisters. It was wonderful.
While it may be good to shake things up a bit in the older grades, it seems almost cruel (残忍的) to separate good friends in the younger grades without good cause.
One mom named Karen says that her son is always starting a new grade without any close friends. At first, she thought it was a good idea. Then she realized one thing — her son does not have a “best friend,” which makes her pretty worried. In fact, she thinks that he does not have any close friends because his classmates are always changing.
Part of a school’s responsibility is to provide a safe and comfortable space for children to learn and grow. If that environment is always changing — causing terrible results — perhaps it is time to rethink this practice.

【71题答案】
【答案】Dear Chris,
I’m Li Jin from Chenguang Middle School. I’ve long been a loyal follower of your microblog account. Every time you share your travel stories and breathtaking photos, I’m completely drawn in, feeling as if I’m traveling right alongside you.
I truly love traveling. During vacations, I explore local areas. Small ancient towns with their unique cultures always amaze me. Once, I visited a coastal village. The fresh sea breeze, the sound of crashing waves, and the friendly villagers made the trip unforgettable.
I sincerely hope we can become friends. I believe exchanging travel experiences will not only enrich my knowledge but also open new horizons for me. Maybe we can even plan a trip together in the future!
Thank you for your time. I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours
LiJin
