Some 30 million Americans suffer from insomnia. Here, our expert panel provides you with four different solutions for getting some rest:
Neil B.Kavey, the sleep specialist.
Try behavior changes and proper and regular use of medication. At night, keep away from bright light. In the morning, open the shades and go out for a walk, to tell your brain, “This is the start of the day.” You can try OTC sleep aids, but if you suffer for more than three weeks, see a doctor. Drugs are safe when used properly, and better than the consequences of sleeplessness.
Gerald Lemole, the alternative source.
Stress often plays a role in insomnia, so try to change your reaction to it. Don’t exercise or eat at the end of the day, and avoid or limit caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. Enjoying a warm bath can help. Also, try taking 1,000 mg of calcium (it may calm your muscles and nerves, helping you sleep).
Lisa Derosimo, the nutritionist.
Go to bed and get up at the same time daily. Keep your room dark and quiet, and remove distractions (no working in bed). Have a cup of herbal (药草) tea, such as chamomile (洋甘菊), to relax your body. And remember, people who eat a healthy diet of whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and low-fat protein feel better and sleep better.
Sandra McLanahan, the mind/body professor.
Lying in bed, starting from your legs and moving up to your head, tense your muscles once at a time, then release. And try alternate-nostril (鼻孔交换的) breathing. Exhale (呼气) through one nostril, using your fingers to close the opposite nostril. Breathe in and out; then switch back and forth. Both of the ways will help you feel more relaxed, like a rubber band after it’s been stretched.

When Helen Keller learned to climb trees, she was excited. At first, Teacher guided her hands and feet from branch to branch. Helen was not afraid, for Teacher would not let her fall. They had a favorite tree, and passed many happy hours resting in its friendly branches. Here Helen read her little books.
One hot morning, coming home from a walk, they climbed up into the tree. It was so cool that Teacher decided to have lunch there. Helen understood when Teacher spelled into her hand “Wait. Teacher will come back.”
Teacher hurried into the house to get some sandwiches. She left Helen in the tree. She stayed longer than she thought, however. Before long Helen knew a storm was coming up. She knew the sky had become cloudy because she could not feel the heat of the sunshine. She could tell it was going to rain by the smell of the earth.
All at once, a sudden wind started to shake the branches of the tree about. A tremble ran through the child. She held on with all her strength to the big branch on which she was sitting. Small branches near her broke off, and the leaves blew away.
A clap of thunder shook the whole earth. Helen could not hear it, but she could feel it. For a minute she was frightened. Then, just as it started to rain, she felt Teacher’s strong, loving arms about her. She knew no harm could come to her.
They did not climb trees after that for a long time. Teacher knew that Helen had been badly frightened.
Helen went out into the garden alone early one morning. She could smell the perfume of the tree blossoms. The tree was a long way from the house.
Helen made her way down to the tree and stood near it. Then, after a while, she felt for one of the low branches and put her foot on it. It was a new tree to Helen, but she felt her way to the next branch and the next.

【答案】40.D 41.B 42.C 43.D 44.A 45.D
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述的是海伦凯勒的一次在树上的经历让她不再恐惧。
40.推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Helen understood when Teacher spelled into her hand “Wait. Teacher will come back.”(当老师把“等一下”这个词用手语告诉海伦时,她明白了老师的意思。)”可知,当老师用手语告诉她“等一下”时,她能明白老师的意思,由此可看出,海伦凯勒是聪明的孩子,结合尾段中的““There!” she said to herself as she sat proudly in a seat someone had built high up in the tree. “I’ll never be afraid to do this again!”(“太棒了!”她自豪地坐别人为她在树上搭建的座位上,“我再也不会害怕爬树了!”)”可知,海伦凯勒在那次在树上的经历之后,又坐在树上的座位上,说不再害怕爬树了,由此可知,海伦凯勒是个勇敢的孩子,综合以上信息,海伦凯勒是一个聪明勇敢的孩子。故选D项。
41.主旨大意题。根据尾段““There!” she said to herself as she sat proudly in a seat someone had built high up in the tree. “I’ll never be afraid to do this again!”(“太棒了!”她自豪地坐别人为她在树上搭建的座位上,“我再也不会害怕爬树了!”)”和倒数第二段中的“Then, after a while, she felt for one of the low branches and put her foot on it. It was a new tree to Helen, but she felt her way to the next branch and the next.(过了一会儿,她摸到一根低矮的树枝,把脚踩在上面。
根据首段中的“At first, Teacher guided her hands and feet from branch to branch. Helen was not afraid, for Teacher would not let her fall.(起初,老师牵着她的手和脚,从树枝爬到树枝。海伦并不害怕,因为老师不会让她摔下去。)”可知,老师一开始牵着她的手和脚爬树,海伦不觉得害怕,因为她知道老师不会让她摔下去,由此可知,老师起初牵着她的手和脚是怕她摔下去,让海伦凯勒失去信心,由此可知,老师起初牵着她的手和脚为了让海伦凯勒对自己有信心。故选C项。

I have always enjoyed cold climates and connecting to the environment. I used to work in northern Sweden during the Arctic winter, surrounded by the northern lights. In some ways, that existence is not too dissimilar to mine now — though in the complete opposite end of the world.
In November 2023, I joined the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust (英国南极遗产信托基金会) as their postmaster and museum manager. There are five of us now living together in a hut in Port Lockroy, a harbor on the west side of the Antarctic peninsula (半岛). As well as looking after the museum, we monitor the environment and keep track of our neighbors, the penguins.
We share the island with 1, 000 Gentoo penguins (巴布亚企鹅). Every two days we Count the nests, eggs and chicks in our colonies, and feed that data back to the British Antarctic Survey.
Maintaining the hut and our lives here takes a lot of work: we’ve got no running water, no flushing toilet and no showers, and there’s a lot of snow digging. Everything just takes a bit longer in Antarctica.
As the postmaster, I’m in charge of sorting the mail that gets sent to the southernmost post office in the world. In five weeks, I’ve processed 20, 000 letters. My favorite letter was a note from two children asking questions about penguins.
I have the nicest walk to work. The museum and post office are just a few feet from our foot. Each day, I come across seals on an iceberg and I see the penguins through all weathers — sun, storms, snow and rain. It’s a lot to get used to: the sun never sets, and the penguins are very noisy. There are also curious snowy sheath bills (白鞘嘴鸥) who run on our metal roof and knock at the windows.
On our days off, once every two weeks, we enjoy going on long walks around the island — everything feels so peaceful. We notice all of the small things, like seeing a bit of moss (苔藓) for the first time. When seals come on to the island, we can spend ages just watching them.
Being in the middle of this vast landscape gives you time to reflect and to think about just how small you are. Sometimes I get emotional just looking at the sun reflected in the water or when the penguins put the first pebble into their nests.

Once, I was invited to see a performance by my friends. Little did I know that I was about to see something I would never forget.
After they introduced the young musician, Mr. Patrick Henry Hughes, he was rolled onto the stage in his wheelchair and began to play the piano. His fingers danced across the keys as he made beautiful music. He then began to sing as he played, and it was even more beautiful. For some reason, however, I knew that I was seeing something special. About ten minutes into Patrick’s performance, someone came on the stage and said, “I’d like to share a seven-minute video.” Then the lights went dim.
Patrick Henry Hughes was born with no eyes and a tightening of the joints, which left him disabled for life. However, as a child, he was fitted with artificial eyes and placed in a wheelchair. Before his first birthday, he discovered the piano. His mom said, “I could hit any note on the piano, and within one or two tries, he’d get it.” By his second birthday, he could play simple songs as requested. His father was excited. “We might not play baseball, but we can play music together.”
Today, Patrick is a junior. His father attends classes with him and he’s made nearly all A’s. He’s also a part of the marching band. He and his father do it together. They attend all the band practices and performances. His father rolls his son around the field to the cheers of Patrick’s fans.
But it was Patrick’s “attitude of gratitude” that touched my soul deeper. On stage, between songs, he talked to the audience about his life and about how blessed he was. He said, “God made me blind and unable to walk. BIG DEAL! He gave me the ability, the musical gifts I have… the great opportunity to meet new people.”
When his performance was over, Patrick and his father were on the stage together. The crowd rose to their feet and cheered for over five minutes.
36.What can we know from the text?
A.Patrick is now in charge of a marching band.
B.My friends told me the performance would be very special.
C.Patrick showed a gift of music at an early age.
D.Patrick played the piano much better than he sang.
37.According to the text, Patrick’s father ________.
A.taught Patrick to sing and play the piano
B.accompanied him to attend classes and practices
C.expected his son to be a great musician and singer
D.has become the leader of the marching band
38.What made the author most impressed?
A.His attitude of gratitude. B.His working hard.
C.His wonderful performance. D.His unlucky fate.
39.The underlined word “blessed” in Paragraph 5 might be replaced by “________”.

There are moments in life when you’re in the middle of-some activity and think, “I love doing this. Love it!” Maybe it happens on the golf course, or camping, or when you’re having dinner at a favorite restaurant. There are so many things to love about modern life.
I’m in love with 35 miles per hour.
It’s a difficult kind of love to talk about in the present age of online short video and live streaming that constantly promote and glorify images of vehicles with roaring (轰鸣的) engines and smoking tires thundering across city streets in endless pursuit of adventure.
My personality has never had a fast-and-crazy side. I vividly recall going to Disneyland as a young teenager and being emotionally thrashed (鞭打) on the Matterhorn roller coaster ride. Other kids were howling (叫喊) with delight at the sharp turns and steep drops while I was mentally repeating the phrases “Please be over soon” and “I don’t want to die”.
Do not, however, assume I spend most of my road time trembling (颤抖) behind the steering wheel. Freeway fright is not my partner. After 45-plus years on the road, I can handle a vast range of traffic hardships. I’ve had my share of rigid joints and sweaty palms but not one accident since a curving fender (挡泥板) incident in college. I go with the flow.
But in private situations, alone on some suburban avenue or country lane, I like to ease off the gas pedal, settle in at a smooth 35 mph.
It’s a speed that allows me to appreciate my surroundings because the scenery doesn’t flash by in a blur. There’s also a significant safety factor because slowing down means I have more time to react and avoid holes, bouncing balls, wild animals, or other risks that may appear unexpectedly.
This is my way of pushing back against the constantly increasing pace of our high-intensity, on-demand society. Think of it as a car drive on a trail. When you load up. for a trip, you don’t race across the countryside at a full dash. It’s much nicer to travel smoothly and find pleasure in the journey.
39.The writer thinks her love of 35 miles per hour .
A.doesn’t agree with the modern society
B.is too complex to be accepted by others
C.will become popular after being advertised online
D.will start a slow movement in society
40.The writer mentioned her experience in Disneyland to prove .
A.Disneyland is a place where kids enjoy the delight of modern life
B.she didn’t brave the challenge brought by high speed
C.rides make children mentally, wild with joy
D.caution is golden rule to avoid accidents
41.According to the 5th Paragraph, the writer .
A.drove slowly behind other cars on freeway
B.couldn’t handle an emergency in driving
C.drove as fast as others on the road
D.experienced a few traffic accidents
42.The best title for the passage may be .
A.My life in the slow lane B.My habit of driving on roads
C.My special love for racing D.My ‘slow’ pace of life
【答案】39.A 40.B 41.C 42.A

40.推理判断题。根据第四段“My personality has never had a fast-and-crazy side.(我的性格从来就没有快速和疯狂的一面。)”和“I was mentally repeating the phrases “Please be over soon” and “I don’t want to die.(我在心里反复念叨着“请快点结束吧”和“我不想死”)”可知,作者提到她在迪斯尼乐园的经历是为了证明她没有勇敢面对高速带来的挑战。故选B。
41.推理判断题。根据第五段“Do not, however, assume I spend most of my road time trembling (颤抖) behind the steering wheel. Freeway fright is not my partner. After 45-plus years on the road, I can handle a vast range of traffic hardships.(然而,不要以为我在路上的大部分时间都在方向盘后面颤抖。高速公路恐惧症不是我的搭档。我在路上开了45年多,可以应付各种各样的交通困难。)”可知,根据第五段,作者在路上开车和别人一样快,故选C。
42.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段“I’m in love with 35 miles per hour.(我爱上了35英里的时速。)”和倒数第三段“But in private situations, alone on some suburban avenue or country lane, I like to ease off the gas pedal, settle in at a smooth 35 mph.(但在私人场合,比如独自在郊区大道或乡间小路上行驶时,我喜欢放松油门踏板,让车速平稳地保持在每小时35英里。)” 故选A。

31.What does the underlined word “insomnia” mean?
A.Late stay.
B.Sleeplessness.
C.Tiredness.
D.Breath trouble.
32.Gerald Lemole thinks that .
A.changing your reaction to insomnia will help
B.insomnia is frequently caused by the effect of pressure
C.it’s limiting eating that matters most
D.having 1,000 mg of caffeine will help you sleep
33.According to Lisa Derosimo, what results in a good sleep?
A.Having a regular daily routine.
B.Taking various medicines.
C.Having a big meal before going to bed.
D.Viewing an online live broadcast in bed.
34.From the passage we can infer alternate-nostril breathing is a good way to .

36.One of the author’s job responsibilities is .

A.Orderly. B.Challenging. C.Sheltered. D.Convenient.
38.Why does the author mention the snowy sheath bills?
A.To express her interest in the snowy sheath bills B.To show wildlife enriches her life there.
C.To describe the beauty of Antarctica. D.To compare them with the penguins.
39.What does the author gain from her experiences in Antarctica?
A.A new view on life. B.An escape from stress.
C.An appreciation for daily routines. D.A special interest in sorting letters.
40.What can be the best title of this passage?
A.Challenges in the Arctic Winter B.Exploring the Antarctic Peninsula

B.accompanied him to attend classes and practices
C.expected his son to be a great musician and singer
