When Ghanaian photojournalist Paul Ninson initially pursued a career in photography, he found the challenge discouraging. Photography isn’t exactly valued as a career in Ghana, Ninson says, “If you tell your parents you’re going to be a photographer, it was like, ‘Yuck, what? Go be a lawyer.’”
But Ninson felt photography was his calling. Deeply influenced by the family history of storytelling passed down through his grandparents and later attracted by a friend’s images, he developed a love for photography. He sold his mobile phone, bought a camera and began studying photography.
Though Ninson began his journey with commercial (商业的) photography, he soon turned his focus to stories, closer to his heart — those of African history and culture that he would capture as a photojournalist.
Ninson still sought formal education in photojournalism. Unable to find a suitable program in Africa, he left Ghana in 2019 to study in New York City. There, he read the center’s hundreds of photobooks. In Ghana, he only had access to five or six of such books.
As he ventured deeper into the city, he discovered more visual histories of Africa than he had experienced at home, such as documentation of Ghana’s first president at the New York Public Library. The libraries Ninson visited were unwilling to give him their archives (档案) to return to Africa, which led to his idea of creating a leading photobook library in Africa that held such stories. This idea has been realized with the creation of the Dikan Center in Accra, Ghana’s capital.
In Ghanaian artist Daniella Afful’s eyes, Dikan Center is the beginning of the growth of Ghana’s creative community, “Dikan Center has magnified (放大) art and photography. Dikan Center has kind of given us the hope that we may soon have a music library and we could have a film library in Ghana — anything just to protect our history and make history.”
24. How did Ninson’s grandparents affect his career choice?
A. They bought a camera for Ninson. B. They carried on the storytelling tradition.
C. They asked him to discuss it with his friend. D. They showed many photos of his family.
25. Why did Ninson go to America?
A. He desired for chances to better himself. B. He hunted for more approaches to culture.
C. He planned to sell hundreds of photobooks. D. He wanted to return to commercial photography.
26. Which of the following can best describe Ninson?
A. Optimistic and humorous. B. Generous and caring.
C. Brave and outgoing. D. Innovative and hard-working.
27. What is Daniella Afful’s attitude towards Dikan Center?
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Negative.

In the United States, perhaps no insect has been counted as often as the butterfly. “There’s a lot of passion for them, and they’re very amazing,” says Collin Edwards, an ecologist at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. That enthusiasm has led volunteers to spend countless hours monitoring butterfly populations over the years.
“Thanks to their efforts, we have one of the world’s best insect datasets,” Edwards adds. However, this data came from various separate programs, each slightly different in approach. To get a single, country-wide look at the state of these insects, Edwards and a team of more than 30 butterfly researchers brought together and analyzed (分析) all these efforts — a total of 12.6 million butterfly sightings. Their findings are alarming.
Since 2000, butterfly numbers in the US have dropped by an average of 22%, according to a study published in Science. Declines have been recorded across the country and among a wide range of species. “A 1% — 2% decrease per year may not sound severe, but over decades, it is staggering,” says biologist David Wagner from the University of Connecticut. “The natural world is losing diversity at an unexpected rate.”
Only 3% of the 554 species examined showed growth, mainly those that adapt well to human environments. More concerning is that the median species declined by over 40%, indicating a broad and serious trend.
Huge change of natural land, for agriculture or other kinds of development, have decreased the natural habitats butterflies need to live in. Pesticides used in farming are directly harming many species, especially in the Midwest. And climate change is pushing creatures out of their comfort zones.
Tackling this crisis will take national or international action. While lots of policies are needed to deal with climate change and regulate pesticides, individuals can also help. “We can’t stop climate change alone, but we can combat habitat loss,” says Edwards. “Planting flowers that can provide food and shelter for butterflies helps them survive despite environmental challenges.”
28. Why do volunteers track butterfly populations?
A. They hope to feed amazing butterflies. B. They want to confirm some findings about the species.
C. They have a strong interest in the species. D. They have seldom counted butterfly populations before.
29. What does the underlined word “staggering” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Shocking. B. Accurate. C. Exciting. D. Reasonable.
30. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A. The side effects of climate change.
B. A latest trend in agricultural development.
C. Pesticides used in modern farming practices.
D. Factors driving declines in butterfly populations.
31. What does Edwards intend to say regarding saving butterflies?
A. Planting flowers can avoid habitat loss. B. Individuals play a minor part in it.
C. Small efforts can make a difference. D. National policies are top priorities.
D
Researchers at Columbia University have developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) (人工智能) method that can accurately predict gene (基因) activity in any human cell (细胞), essentially revealing the cell’s inner mechanisms. Detailed in the latest issue of Nature, this system has the potential to change how scientists study cancer, genetic disorders, and other diseases.
“Predictive generalizable computational models allow to uncover biological processes in a fast and accurate way. These methods can effectively conduct large-scale computational experiments, boosting and guiding traditional experimental approaches,” says Raul Rabadan, senior author of the new paper.
Traditional biological methods show how cells function or respond to changes, but they lack the ability to forecast these processes. Recent advances in AI and massive biological data collections are making this change possible. However, using AI to forecast gene activity inside cells has been a greater challenge — until now.
Rabadan’s team developed an AI model trained on gene expression data from over 1.3 million normal human cells. Unlike earlier models trained on limited data, this system uses genetic information and accessibility data to forecast which genes are active in any cell. The process is similar to how language models like MindLink, an AI chat tool, work: It learns patterns from data and applies them to new situations. Testing showed the model could accurately forecast gene activity in cell types it had not encountered, matching experimental results closely.
The researchers applied the AI model to study pediatric leukemia, a childhood cancer caused by inherited mutations (遗传变异). The model predicted how these mutations disturb critical processes in cells, a finding later confirmed through experiments. This understanding highlights the specific mechanisms driving the disease. The AI model could also reveal unexplored regions of the genome, often linked to cancer. These “dark” regions do not code for proteins but may play key roles in disease.
Already, Rabadan is working with researchers at Columbia and other universities, exploring different cancers, from brain to blood cancers, learning the grammar of regulation in normal cells, and how cells change in the process of cancer development.
32. What is a problem about traditional biological methods?
A. They are difficult to combine with AI.
B. They can’t forecast how cells work.
C. They are expensive in plenty of research.
D. They hardly collect massive biological data.
33. Why does the author mention MindLink in paragraph 4?
A. To remove public doubts about AI chat tools.
B. To introduce the disadvantages of AI chat tools.
C. To explain the experimental results from Rabadan’s team.
D. To clarify how the AI model developed by Rabadan’s team functions.
34. What does paragraph 5 mainly stress about the new AI model?
A. Its popularity. B. Its application value. C. Its complexity. D. Its design inspiration.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. New AI Model Exposes Secrets of Human Cells
B. Scientists Unlock the Secret of Blood Cancers
C. Advances in AI Fuel a Heated Debate in Biology
D. AI Tools Are Widely Used to Treat Rare Diseases

When my brother Jake left for college, gone was the laughter that once filled our home. Jake wasn’t just my brother — he was my best friend and the one who always knew how to pull me out of my darkest moods. His absence left a huge hole in my life, and no amount of video calls or texts could fill it. Then came the news: Marco, an exchange student from Italy, would be staying in Jake’s room.
“Marco? In Jake’s room?” I asked, my voice trembling. “But that’s his space.” My mom, trying to comfort me, said, “Marco’s excited to be here. You might even learn something new.” I wasn’t convinced. The idea felt like a betrayal (背叛), as if we were replacing Jake.
When Marco arrived, he was nothing like I had expected. He was tall, with dark curly hair and a confident smile that seemed to light up the room. He greeted me with a cheerful “Hello!” and immediately started unpacking his things. I stood awkwardly in the doorway, watching as he transformed Jake’s room into his own space. Overwhelmed (不知所措的), I whispered a quick “Hi” and returned to my room.
The first few days were tense. Marco, chatting with my parents about Naples, tried to include me, but I kept my distance. One evening, I overheard him talking about how much he missed playing soccer with his friends back home. “It’s not just a game,” he said. “It’s a way of life.” I rolled my eyes.
Then, one Saturday afternoon, everything changed. My parents had to attend a wedding out of town, leaving Marco and me in the house. I busied myself with my own things in my room, trying to avoid any interaction. But around midday, Marco knocked on my door. “Hey, I’m going to play some soccer in the backyard. Want to join me?” he asked. I hesitated. Soccer had never been my thing — I was more of a basketball person. But the thought of sitting alone in my room all day didn’t sound appealing either.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Finally, I followed Marco into the backyard.

Hello, everyone! I’m excited to share with you my experience as a volunteer at the traditional Chinese painting exhibition held in our city’s art gallery last weekend.
I worked with the team to arrange and display the paintings, ensuring each piece was presented perfectly with appropriate lighting and informative labels. Guiding visitors was equally fulfilling. I introduced the history and techniques of the traditional Chinese painting, helping visitors to better appreciate the art.
This experience was incredibly rewarding. It deepened my understanding of traditional Chinese painting and enhanced my communication skills. I felt honored to spread our cultural heritage and engage in conversation with people fond of art.
第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
Finally, I followed Marco into the backyard. The moment I stepped onto the grass, Marco tossed me a soccer ball with an encouraging grin. “Just try kicking it around,” he said. To my surprise, his enthusiasm was contagious. Though my first attempts were clumsy, Marco patiently showed me basic techniques, laughing when I tripped over my own feet. His lightheartedness eased my tension, and soon, I found myself actually enjoying the game. As we played, he shared stories about his hometown. For the first time, I saw Marco not as an intruder in Jake’s space, but as someone who, like me, was just trying to find his footing in a new place.
That day marked a turning point in my relationship with Marco. Soccer became our shared language. We started practicing regularly, and I even taught him some basketball moves in return. Slowly, the awkwardness between us faded. One evening, while watching a game together, Marco admitted, “I was nervous about coming here too. But having you as a friend made it easier.” His honesty struck me. I realized that while no one could replace Jake, Marco had carved out his own place in our home — and in my life.
