So, when I was 15 and a mysterious woman came into my school, pulled me from a lesson and told me I’d been mishearing things my entire life, I was confused, to say the least. She was an assigned “teacher of the deaf” from South Tyneside Council. The woman explained that I couldn’t hear certain high-frequency pitches, and that I would find it difficult to hear others in rooms with high ceilings or with lots of background noise. I couldn’t hear “f”, “s” or “ph” sounds, and I often confused words, like “Ireland” with “Thailand” for example, because they sound phonetically similar. A test, in which she covered her mouth and repeated sentences, confirmed her suspicions that I was, and probably had always been, lip-reading.She concluded that, without lip-reading, I missed about 15% of every sentence. For people who have hearing loss, lip-reading is subconscious: the mind fills in the gaps using context and knowledge of the person’s facial movements. That’s why it becomes easier to “hear” what someone has said the longer you’ve known them. I was given hearing aids and wore them over the next two years. But gradually I decided to quit wearing them. I found myself diverted by the sounds that my hearing aids picked up. Rather than enhancing my life, they took me out of the moment: all I could focus on was the sound of the grass beneath my feet or the electronic beep sound of the fridge when I left the door open too long. I also wanted to prove that I could succeed in life without them. Largely, I have: a wife, two children, a house and a stable income.I had managed to get through school without needing additional support. Today I still get asked: “Why don’t you wear your hearing aids?” But that’s about it. Giving up my hearing aids showed me that I could still be successful without assistance. 4. What problem does the author have? A. He has occasional ringing in the ears. B. He feels dizzy during long conversations. C. He is unable to make high-frequency sounds. D. He struggles to hear in a noisy room with a high ceiling. 5. What does the second paragraph say about lip-reading? A. It helps the author understand others completely. B. It takes the author a long time to master it. C. It is an essential method to communicate. D. It lets the author follow familiar people more easily. 6. Which can best replace the underlined word “diverted” in paragraph 3? A. Distracted. B. Tested. C. Rescued. D. Destroyed. 7. What can we learn from the text? A. The best fit is the one that works for you. B Nothing is difficult to the man who will try. C. Turning a deaf ear to others’ criticisms is a way to be yourself. D. He who sees through life and death will meet with most success. D 5. D 6. A 7. 根据第一段中“The woman explained that I couldn’t hear certain high-frequency pitches, and that I would find it difficult to hear others in rooms with high ceilings or with lots of background noise.(这位女士解释说我听不到某些高频音调,而且我会发现在天花板很高或有很多背景噪音的房间里很难听清别人说话。)” 根据第二段中“For people who have hearing loss, lip-reading is subconscious: the mind fills in the gaps using context and knowledge of the person’s facial movements. That’s why it becomes easier to ‘hear’ what someone has said the longer you’ve known them.(对于有听力损失的人来说,唇读是下意识的:大脑利用语境和对他人面部动作的了解来填补空白。这就是为什么你认识一个人越久,就越容易‘听’懂他说的话。)”可知,唇读能让作者更容易理解熟悉的人说的话。故选D。 【6题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段中“I found myself diverted by the sounds that my hearing aids picked up. Rather than enhancing my life, they took me out of the moment: all I could focus on was the sound of the grass beneath my feet or the electronic beep sound of the fridge when I left the door open too long.(我发现自己被助听器接收到的声音diverted了。它们并没有改善我的生活,反而让我脱离了当下:我所能专注的只是我脚下草地的声音,或者当我把冰箱门开得太久时冰箱发出的电子哔哔声。)”可知,助听器接收到的声音让作者分心,无法专注当下。所以猜测diverted表“使人分心的”,A选项Distracted.(使分心)符合语境。故选A。 A。 C In this big Vietnamese city, Da Nang, one prime piece of real estate remains mostly untouched: the mountainous and forested tip of the city's peninsula. It is a 6,400-acre nature reserve called Son Tra. The reserve is a last refuge for the douc, a critically endangered monkey that numbers only about 2,000 there. This is not an easy achievement. The douc is among the many species that have suffered huge declines because of habitat loss, which studies show is the biggest driver of biodiversity loss globally, and especially in Southeast Asia. Urban growth is a major contributor to the problem. Experts warn that animals unable to adapt to urban settings may be pushed into ever-smaller, isolated spots, which results in their trouble in living. In Son Tra, some deforestation can be traced back to the Vietnam War, when the forests were sprayed (喷洒) with a harmful substance by Americans. As the Vietnamese government's focus remained clearly on growing its economy in the years following the war, wildlife protection didn't receive enough attention. As recently as a decade ago, few people in Da Nang even knew the douc existed in Son Tra, according to Larry Ulibarri, an anthropologist at the University of Oregon in Eugene. Recognition of the douc began to grow when GreenViet, which was formed ten years ago, and other conservationists started organizing photo exhibits, school visits, and other outreach programs. Plans made by developers in 2016 to build several seaside resorts inside the reserve led to a public outcry. Campaigners collected 10,000 signatures protesting the project, an unusual display of public opposition in Vietnam. When national leaders joined the call, the project was given up. Son Tra's military staff has prevented illegal hunters, and hunting is no longer considered a major threat in the reserve. 8. What is the first paragraph mainly about? A. The introduction to Da Nang. B. Son Tra's significance to the douc. C. The popularity of the douc in Son Tra. D. Exceptionally endangered animals in Vietnam. 9. What do we know about the biodiversity loss in Southeast Asia? A. It mainly results from lack of living space. B. It leads to studies on better urban settings. C. It gets due attention from the government. D. It's bound to take place along with economy development. 10. What happened to the forests in Son Tra during the Vietnam War? A. They were used as shelters. B. They received inadequate water. C. They were ruined by a chemical. D. They produced huge quantities of wood. 11. The tone of the last paragraph can be best described as________. A. pessimistic B. concerned C. critical D. delightful 【答案】8. B 9. A 10. C 11. 根据第一段“It is a 6,400 - acre nature reserve called Son Tra. The reserve is a last refuge for the douc, a critically endangered monkey that numbers only about 2,000 there.(这是一个 6400 英亩的自然保护区,名为Son Tra。该保护区是白臀叶猴的最后避难所,白臀叶猴是一种极度濒危的猴子,在那里仅存约 2000 只)” 可知,第一段主要介绍了Son Tra对白臀叶猴的重要性。故选B。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“The douc is among the many species that have suffered huge declines because of habitat loss, which studies show is the biggest driver of biodiversity loss globally, and especially in Southeast Asia.(白臀叶猴是因栖息地丧失而数量大幅下降的众多物种之一,研究表明,栖息地丧失是全球生物多样性丧失的最大驱动因素,在东南亚尤其如此)” 可知,东南亚生物多样性丧失主要是由于栖息地丧失,即缺乏生存空间。故选A。 根据第三段“In Son Tra, some deforestation can be traced back to the Vietnam War, when the forests were sprayed (喷洒) with a harmful substance by Americans.(在Son Tra,一些森林砍伐可以追溯到越南战争时期,当时美国人向森林喷洒了一种有害物质)”可知,越南战争期间,Son Tra的森林被化学物质破坏。 根据最后一段“Recognition of the douc began to grow when GreenViet, which was formed ten years ago, and other conservationists started organizing photo exhibits, school visits, and other outreach programs. Plans made by developers in 2016 to build several seaside resorts inside the reserve led to a public outcry. Campaigners collected 10,000 signatures protesting the project, an unusual display of public opposition in Vietnam. When national leaders joined the call, the project was given up. Son Tra's military staff has prevented illegal hunters, and hunting is no longer considered a major threat in the reserve.(十年前成立的GreenViet和其他环保人士开始组织照片展览、参观学校和其他推广项目,人们开始认识到这一问题。2016年,开发商计划在保护区内建造几个海滨度假胜地,这引发了公众的强烈抗议。活动人士收集了1万个签名来抗议该项目,这是越南公众反对该项目的罕见表现。当各国领导人加入呼吁时,该项目被放弃了。Son Tra的军事人员阻止了非法猎人,狩猎不再被视为保护区的主要威胁)”可知,人们对白臀叶猴的保护取得了一定成效,整体氛围是积极的,所以最后一段的语气是令人愉快的。故选D。 D Adolescents' enthusiasm for beauty products is nothing new.Today, however, skin care is a far more serious business.Gone are the days of teens aimlessly browsing random drugstores by day and dirtying their pillows with bronzer by night. Now, kids don't just know how to get cleaned up properly, but also they've taken to beauty products with greater enthusiasm.Ridiculous as it sounds, that craze is sharply unpleasant. The closer you look at the teen skin care craze, the more issues appear.Doctors report children as young as nine, coming to their offices for cosmetic consultations.Teens are crazy about the so-called “preventative” anti-aging properties of a brand, and the Internet is filled with youngsters seeking for solutions to their “wrinkles”. All this comes with harmful undercurrents less familiar to the adults who went before them. Adult products boasting “anti-aging, tightening, wrinkle-reducing, brightening and firming” effects are likely to include ingredients unsuitable for kids' skin, which is yet to form the protective barriers necessary to handle them, and therefore teens may develop allergies to some ingredients. Moreover, their prices remain decidedly grown-up, and the potential cost overall is breathtaking. This might put economical pressure on kids and on the parents who often foot the bill. “Preventative” anti-aging is a perfect trick for companies willing to take advantage of youthful insecurities. There's no way of knowing what you'd have looked like if you hadn't used the products, but you can certainly assume you'd look worse if you stopped.Once teens get a little older, an additional world of non-surgical procedures becomes available to them, the cost of which can run into the thousands. Until just several years ago, parents' main beauty-related concern was that their kids might go out wearing “too much” makeup. When I was growing up, I experimented, with minimal investment, and then I moved on.That's how it should be.The most worrying thing about today's skin care craze isn't just that the financial and emotional buy-in are completely out of proportion to the “need” being addressed. They may set kids up for lasting damage. So stay away from beauty products, young people! 12. How does the author feel about teens' enthusiasm for beauty products? A. Embarrassed. B. Panicked. C. Negative. D. Confused. 13. Why do teenagers have a passion for beauty products? A. They tend to make comparisons with others. B. They are uncertain about their physical changes. C. They are influenced by online information about health. D. They try to avoid high prices of non-surgical procedures. 14. What does the author focus on in the last paragraph? A. The right attitude to beauty products. B Teenagers' misuse of beauty products. C. The solution to kids' beauty-related issues. D. Parents' concern about kids' craze for makeup. 15. Which can be the best title for the text? A. How to get rid of annoying wrinkles. B. A new trend:“Preventative” anti-aging. C. What to blame for fake beauty products. D. A warning sign:Teens' craze for skin care. C 13. B 14. A 15. 根据第四段““Preventative” anti - aging is a perfect trick for companies willing to take advantage of youthful insecurities.(“预防性”抗衰老对于那些愿意利用年轻人不安全感的公司来说是一个完美的噱头)” 可知,青少年对身体变化感到不确定,所以容易被公司利用,从而对美容产品产生热情。 根据最后一段 “Until just several years ago, parents' main beauty-related concern was that their kids might go out wearing “too much” makeup. When I was growing up, I experimented, with minimal investment, and then I moved on.That's how it should be.The most worrying thing about today's skin care craze isn't just that the financial and emotional buy-in are completely out of proportion to the “need” being addressed. They may set kids up for lasting damage. So stay away from beauty products, young people!(直到几年前,父母主要担心的与美容相关的问题是他们的孩子可能会化着 “浓妆” 出门。 故选A。 根据文章最后一段 “So stay away from beauty products, young people!(所以年轻人,远离美容产品!)” Committing yourself to eating healthier is a common way to kick off a new year. You might start by researching salad recipes and stocking up on lettuce (生菜) and other greens. But after a few days in the fridge, your lettuce might not be looking so fresh. ____16____ This can leave you wondering: Do these changes mean your salad greens aren’t safe for consumption? Can you still eat those leaves? To better understand the changes in salad greens, food safety and produce experts explain why they occur and how to know if your lettuce is still safe to eat.  ____17____ It’s a natural post-harvest characteristic. The primary reasons behind this discoloration are due to improper handling and storage. If the leaves are bruised or cut, or if the lettuce is stored with an excess of moisture, this can result in much faster development of rust (锈病) on the leaves. The rusty discoloration may be ugly, but it doesn’t make the lettuce unsafe to eat. ____18____ As long as the rest of the leaves appear fresh and firm, it’s safe to eat the pink parts.  Storing salad greens correctly will help keep them fresh for longer.____19____ Also keep greens cold, preferably between 1 and 5 degrees Celsius, to slow rusting and breakdown.  Before eating, sort through your leaves and remove anything soft, discolored, or slimy, to be on the safe side. Avoid eating anything with an unpleasant or sour smell. A few bad leaves likely won’t cause the rest of the pack to go bad. ____20____ A. The reddish-pink discoloration that shows up on lettuce is known as “rusting”. B. However, if the majority of them seem off, throw the whole package away. C. You’d better keep leafy greens separate from other fruits and vegetables. D. Maybe it is showing some pinkness or redness on its leaves. E. But you can just chop the pink parts off if they bother you. F. Dark or wet leaves can otherwise signal damage. G. Some part of it may get wet and soft. 16. D 17. A 18. E 19. C 20. From clocks that wouldn’t tick to bikes that had lost their click, Carlos could mend almost anything and the locals would say, “If Carlo s can’t fix it, then it can’t be fixed.” Carlos had a son named Luis who admired his father’s talent but had his heart set on music. He would spend hours sitting outside the shop, playing the guitar, filling the air with melodies. Carlos loved his son’s music, but he often worried about his future. “Music is your passion, son, but fixing things is a steady trade”, he would say. One day, the neighborhood’s joy was affected by the news that the beloved park, where children played and families gathered, was going to be closed down. “It’s old and unsafe,” the city officials said. “It would take too much to fix it.” The community was heartbroken because the park was where memories were made. Carlos and Luis walked through the park sadly. As they passed the silent swings and the rusty (生锈的) slide, an idea began to form in Luis’ mind. “What if we fix the park, Dad? We could do it together!” But Carlos shook his head, “It’s a big job, dear. Bigger than any we’ve done before.” Instead of being in despair, Luis organized a concert in the park to raise awareness and funds. The whole neighborhood came to hear him play, their spirits lifted by his songs of hope and unity. After the concert, Carlos stood up, moved by the community’s outpouring of love for the park and their shared moments under the stars. “We will fix our park!” Carlos declared to the crowd. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Park was saved due to the city official’s support. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 “We will fix our park!” Carlos declared to the crowd. The words echoed through the park, filling the air with a renewed sense of hope. The crowd erupted into cheers and applause, their energy and determination igniting a spark within each other. Carlos continued, “Together, we will make this park shine again. We’ll use my skills to mend the broken structures and Luis’ music to inspire and unite us.” The neighbors nodded in agreement, ready to roll up their sleeves and contribute in any way they could. The Park was saved due to the city officials’ support, but it was the collective efforts of the community that truly made the difference. After hearing about the concert and the passionate speeches made by Carlos and Luis, the officials were touched by the residents’ dedication to preserving their cherished space. They agreed to provide necessary funding and resources, recognizing the value of the park as a hub for community bonding and childhood memories. As the park slowly regained its former glory, the community felt a renewed sense of pride and belonging. The city officials even organized an official reopening ceremony, where Luis performed a special concert, dedicating his music to the park and the people who made its salvation possible. 词汇激活 行为类 ①利用:use/take advantage of ②爆发:erupt into/burst into ③恢复:regain/recover 情绪类 ①鼓舞:inspire/encourage ②感动:touched/moved 【点睛】[高分句型1] The city officials even organized an official reopening ceremony, where Luis performed a special concert, dedicating his music to the park and the people who made its salvation possible. B. Nothing is difficult to the man who will try. C Turning a deaf ear to others’ criticisms is a way to be yourself. D. He who sees through life and death will meet with most success. C In this big Vietnamese city, Da Nang, one prime piece of real estate remains mostly untouched: the mountainous and forested tip of the city's peninsula. A. pessimistic B. concerned C. critical D. delightful D Adolescents' enthusiasm for beauty products is nothing new.Today, however, skin care is a far more serious business.Gone are the days of teens aimlessly browsing random drugstores by day and dirtying their pillows with bronzer by night. 12. E. One day the neighborhood’s joy was affected by the news that the beloved park, where children played and families gathered, was going to be closed down. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
