I remember wondering if we should even be friends when I found out that my new friend Karina did not share my opinions about some stuff. It was hard to imagine disagreeing with her about anything, because when we first met, we got along so great.
It was as if we’d known each other forever. Whenever we got to pick a partner at camp, we picked each other. Whenever we had a break, we hung out together. And the more time we spent together, the more we realized how amazingly alike we were. We both had two lovely cats. We both liked baking extra-creative cookies.
But then something happened. The tent camp was next to a piece of beautiful land that had a bunch of giant old trees on it. Whenever it was nice out, we’d get to eat our lunch at picnic tables that were right by some of those trees. “Whoa!” said Karina one day. “Look at the millions of holes all the way up and down this trunk.”
“That’s amazing,” I said. “A special kind of woodpecker (啄木鸟)makes those holes to store acorns (橡子).”
“Pretty cool! ”said our counselor, Miguel. “Now, let’s all be sure to keep this magical forest as clean and perfect. Don’t forget to put your trash and recyclables in the bins.”
And that’s when things got complicated. “Hey,” said our friend LeVar. “Have you guys heard that shopping-mall rumor (传闻)? They want to cut down a bunch of those trees to make room for a shopping center.”
“That’s terrible!” I said. “We have to stop that.”
“I disagree,” said Karina. “My parents said the shopping center would make new jobs for people.”
“But think of all the birds and squirrels that would lose their homes!” I said. “I want people to have jobs, but not if it means cutting down trees.”
“Don’t you think people’s jobs are more important than trees?” Karina asked.
“Can’t we figure out how to make jobs without destroying nature?” I answered.
“You know,” Karina said, super seriously, “maybe we’re not quite as alike as we thought.”
I sighed sadly.

【答案】
Maybe two people with opposite points of view just aren’t meant to be friends, I was thinking. That evening, as we sat around the campfire, the atmosphere felt heavy with unspoken words. Suddenly, Karina thought of an idea, “What if we organized a community event to raise awareness about the importance of those trees and also brainstormed ideas for creating jobs without harming nature?” I couldn’t help but smile at her suggestion. “That’s a fantastic idea, Karina! Let’s do it together. Our friendship is strong enough to handle differences,” I replied, relief and excitement washing over me.
We ended up having much more fun at the tent camp. Our efforts not only strengthened our friendship but also brought our camp community together in a shared cause. We realized that friendships aren’t about agreeing on everything. They’re about respecting each other’s perspectives, learning from differences, and finding common goals. The forest remained untouched, and our bond, fortified by our collaborative triumph, blossomed into something even deeper and more meaningful. In the end, it wasn’t about proving who was right. It was about growing together, as individuals and as friends.

The sun was starting to set, casting long shadows that danced and mixed with the rough trail. Jeff and Kirk, their heartbeats matching the pace of their mountain bikes, were racing down the hill. This was a trail they had conquered numerous times, each time with a different outcome. Sometimes Jeff would win, other times Kirk would. Waiting withheld breath at the base of the hill were their friends, Kyle and Greg, eagerly expecting to see who would make it first this time.
Sitting on the gentle slope of the hill, a single deer stood calmly at the side of the narrow road, its eyes catching the last rays of the setting sun. The soft rustle (沙沙声) of the leaves underfoot and the distant laughter carried on the wind made the deer aware that the boys were coming. A sense of unease washed over the creature, which caused it to freeze in place. The deer, with it sears standing up, was trying to decide whether or not it should find another place to hide.
Jeff and Kirk were speeding down the steep and winding road, their adventure underway. The wind rushed past them, making Kirk’s heartbeat fast with joy. Overwhelmed by the thrill of it all, Kirk, feeling a surge of excitement running through his body, made aloud joyful noise that could be heard far and wide, breaking the peaceful silence that had covered the place before.
However, this sudden noise was just enough to scare the deer and in its fear, the deer leaped on to the road right in front of the racing boys. For a moment, time seemed to freeze. The boys, who were once filled with excitement and joy, now found themselves seized by fear and uncertainty. They wondered if their exciting adventure was dangerously close to a sudden end.

One morning in December 2023, my co-worker Al’s email caught my attention: “Found: $20 bill on the floor in the lab at the end of the hall from the main building. See Alan W. to claim.”
Al’s email reminded me of an incident that occurred on Christmas 40 years ago. Before heading out for Christmas shopping that evening, I had withdrawn $400 from the bank, foolishly stuffing eight fifty dollar bills in my front trousers pocket. On my way to Oakbrook Shopping Center, I stopped at SportMart to look at skiing equipment for my son.
Returning to the car, I discovered the bills were gone. This was $400 in 1983—a huge sum of money! Feeling terrible, I turned my pockets inside out, thinking how I could have been so careless! I turned on my car headlights and desperately looked for the bills in the snow covering the parking area, but found nothing. This was the Chicago area. It was said that people in neighborhoods were not in the habit of turning in cash they found. At the thought of this, I was so sad. With low expectations, I returned to SportMart and started telling my awful tale to the store manager.
Hearing I’d lost cash, he interrupted, stating he needed to page(呼叫 ) the store quickly. Someone had earlier reported finding money. The customer wouldn’t say how much or leave the money with the manager, but left his name. The manager was concerned he may have left.
I stopped breathing as the page broadcast. Minutes passed, and I was about to give up hope when a man and a boy approached the manager. The manager pointed them in my direction. He was in his mid-thirties, with dark hair, a winter jacket, and a son about 10 or 12 He smiled, “The manager tells me you lost some money. Can you describe the amount and denominations(面额)?”

Lenny worked as a man collecting rubbish of neighborhoods. One day, he was busy with his work. During it, he also tried to look for a toy that he could send to her daughter Janet as a birthday gift. After a long time, he failed to find a good enough toy.
“How could I let my daughter down for the second year?” Lenny thought sadly. He was standing among the rubbish. Suddenly, he heard an animal’s sound. It was a little dog, which had been hiding under a big wood board, looking Lenny straight in the eye.
“Hi! Where’s your mom?” Lenny asked and picked up the dog, looking around for any sign of another dog. At the same time, his co-worker Joe waited in the garbage truck. “Lenny, just leave it alone. We’re running late. You don’t want to lose this job, do you?” Joe reminded.
His friend was right. He couldn’t afford to lose this job. He needed to pay for Janet’s medical bills. Janet suffered from special epilepsy (癫痫) every few weeks. Every time, the sudden attack of the disease would cause Janet to fall on the ground with painful convulsions (抽搐) .
Lenny thought about putting the dog back down for a second. But he couldn’t let the poor little creature in his arms go. He looked around once again and carried him along. He wanted to save the dog and planned to give it to Janet.
When he arrived home, little Janet asked, “Dad! What’s in this box? ” Lenny was silent, worrying she’d dislike it. Unexpectedly, when Janet opened the box, she said excitedly, “Oh, a little dog. ”
This dog was an unusual type of dog. It could pick up on early signs of an upcoming attack of epilepsy. Then, it would bark (吠叫) , warning the owner about it. Then, people could rush in time to prepare everything necessary to treat and calm the convulsions that were about to happen to the patient.
Not knowing that special, natural ability of the dog, Lenny and Janet lifted the little creature together.

I wrote my first poem. My mother read the little poem and began to cry out, “Buddy, I can’t believe it. What a wonderful poem!” My eyes twinkled when she poured out her praise. “What time will Dad be home?” I asked. I could hardly wait to show him, expecting the praise from an editor of Times.
I spent the best part of that afternoon preparing for his arrival. First, I wrote the poem out to the best of my ability. Then I drew pictures to match this greatest poem. As seven o’clock drew near, I confidently placed it on my father’s plate on the dining room table, waiting for him to appreciate this wonderful poem of mine.
That evening when my father burst in, his mood seemed even more thunderous than usual. An hour late for dinner, he did not sit down but circled the long dining room table with a drink in his hand, complaining non-stop about his employees. Under my steady stare, he paused and glared at his plate. There was an awful silence. “What’s this?” He reached for the paper and read it. Then he dropped the poem back on the table, saying, “Awful!” My eyes were getting wet.
“Ben, Buddy is just a little boy. These are the first lines of poetry he’s ever produced. He needs encouragement,” my mother said. But my father disagreed, “Isn’t there enough terrible poetry in the world already? No law says Buddy has to become a poet.” They quarreled over it. I couldn’t stand it another second. I ran from the dining room, crying. A sad story, but you know, the family wounds healed (痊愈). My mother began talking to my father again. I even began writing poems again, though I seldom exposed them to my father.

As Papá fell sound asleep, Catalina slid from her bed and felt her way to the front door. The girl waited a moment to see if any of her family would wake, but nobody stirred. She tiptoed upstairs to her “Observatory”, longing for drinking in deep lungfuls of the clear night air under the bright stars.
She polished her dear telescope, which was presented by her grandpa, the only one to support her dream. She assembled (组装) it, disassembled it and reassembled it repeatedly, knowing its parts very well.
Through it she could explore the unknown galaxy, the Milky Way stretching across the deep blue sky. Night was always her favorite time. When everything was quiet, she was lost in her starry night. At this moment, she seemed to forget her cares and sorrows in the daytime.
She told her secret dream to these beloved ones, her friends, teachers and even her father. When she said, “Papá, I want to be an astronomer working in the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory someday,” her father replied, “Maybe if you work hard, you’ll be hired to clean the offices.” No one believed she would be a scientist one day. But why? She knew she could be a good scientist. She knew it!
A big day was coming—to visit the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, where she had visited for dozens of times, familiar with every set of the instruments there. This time with her classmates she was still eager for something stimulating.
She took a cautious step forward, holding her breath, and her eyes getting closer to the lens (镜片) of the telescope. She adjusted the device softly and carefully, hoping to find more.... “Bang! …” suddenly there came a loud noise. One of her old friends “one-meter” telescope fell down, broken.
“Look out! Stop touching anything! Step backward!” The manager yelled.
“One-meter is broken, but the scientist has the day off. Nobody can fix it.” An operator added. Worries blanketed the hall.
“I CAN FIX IT!” Catalina’s voice was surprisingly calm.
“You what...?” The manager uttered, confused, and doubted.
“It has 67 parts in total. An adjustable spanner (扳手) and a star screwdriver (螺丝刀) can help.”
“Then you know how to assemble it.” His eyes wide open, he still half believed.
Confidently, she nodded.

“This Saturday, we’ll be visiting cats at the animal shelter. If you’d like to join us, here’s an application form”, said Ms. Delgado, the school librarian who had held the reading engagement event for students.
Ben loved cats and he had always wanted one, so he hurried to take an application form. Then Ms. Delgado added, “We’ll be reading to the cats and award readers who make most progress.” Ben stopped. Reading al oud can be a challenging task. Ben might feel his heart racing, his palms sweating, and his voice shaking as he read. He might stumble over words or lose his place in the text. He might feel like everyone was watching him and judging him. Still, he really wanted to visit the cats, so he took an application form anyway.
On Saturday, Ben arrived at the shelter with some of his classmates. “This is Max,” the shelter worker told Ben as she handed him a gray cat. Ben carried Max to a beanbag chair and sat down. Max settled onto his lap. He took a book he’d been working on and started reading. Max, very different from other cats walking around the room while the kids read, purred (发出呼噜声) on his lap as if he had understood what Ben read.
“I’m glad Max is staying and listening to my reading and he is the best cat ever,” Ben told Dad excitedly. “I’m glad you two are friends,” Dad said. All week, Ben’s heart was filled with anxiety as he waited for Saturday to arrive. He was eager to read to Max and the anticipation of spending time with his feline (猫咪的) friend made him restless and nervous. When it arrived, Ben got to read to Max again.
“What if someone adopts Max?” Ben asked Dad later. “I guess you’d read to a different cat,” Dad said. “But I don’t want a different cat. I wish we could adopt Max,” Ben said to Dad. He knew they couldn’t because Mom had allergies (过敏). Ben loved the cat so much that he even told his next-door neighbor, Mrs. Patel, about Max. “Max sounds like a special cat,” said Mrs. Patel.

Gerry loved to read stories before bed. He was a good reader and had plenty of books that he could read to himself. Reading on his own was fun, but Gerry also liked listening to his parents read books aloud. That way he could hear the stories in the thick books that he wasn’t yet able to read. Meanwhile, the shared experience of storytelling created a warm and comforting atmosphere that stayed with him long after the tales ended. Gerry felt truly loved and cherished in those precious moments, surrounded by the magic of storytelling and the bond between parents and children.
If you asked him who was a better reader, Gerry would say that he liked both his parents equally. That was true. He loved Mom and Dad both very much. But deep down, Gerry felt that Dad was just a little bit better at reading stories because he always made different voices for each character. Gerry thought that this made the books more exciting.
But Dad wasn’t always home to read to Gerry before bedtime. Gerry’s dad worked for a big company that had offices all around the world, so Dad had to travel a lot. When he was gone, Gerry felt very sad. Mom still read books at night, but it wasn’t quite the same. Sometimes Gerry went to bed without a story at all, just to get to sleep faster and get that much closer to the day they would pick Dad up at the airport. Understanding Gerry’s feelings well, Mom made efforts to comfort Gerry during Dad’s absence.
One night, Gerry felt sad because Dad was in London and would be there for two months. That was longer than any trips that came before.
Just as Gerry was about to turn off the light switch and pull the covers up to his chin, Mom knocked on the door gently, “Gerry, I have a surprise for you.”
Mom came into the room and handed Gerry her phone. Gerry was surprised. Normally Mom’s phone was off limits, and there was no screen time after supper. “Take a look,” Mom encouraged.

That year I was 16 years old and my father had just passed away in that cold late autumn. There were no Thanksgiving celebrating plans in my family that year. To make ends meet, my mother worked two jobs as a cleaning lady, and I had a part-time job in the downtown. It was the Thanksgiving night and it was raining and blowing. The shops were closed and the streets were decorated with the colorful lamps for the grant festival. My shift at work was over and I waited for the bus alone in the station.
The wind blew my thin coat and threatened to tear my worn-out hand-knit hat that my mother had knitted for me years ago. Wearing a pair of discolored pants, I shivered against the cold wind, deep in thought about how my father’s death led to my family heart broken and how my mother and I struggled to work to support our family.
A bus approached as I thought these things. Fortunately, a seat on the bus was unoccupied and I took it with delight, placing my feet on the perfect spot close to the heater. I cherished the small comfort of the warmth as it seeped (渗透) through the bottom of my wet feet.
Then a gentleman, perhaps in his 60s, appeared from somewhere in the back of the bus. He wore a hat and a fine woolen scarf. Then he stopped and sat down next to me, placing a shopping bag between us. Through the transparent shopping bag under my nose, I vaguely saw a box with chocolate printed on it, a box with a music box printed on it, and a clothing-type thing. These must be the gifts for a certain girl and I also wished to get such gifts. When he noticed my stare, I looked away immediately and curled up to keep warm, or rather, to hide my embarrassment.

School Picnic Day
My mom often tells me stories. One of her stories is about the school picnic. At that time, schools didn’t have a track and field day like we have now. Instead, the biggest day for them was the School Picnic Day.
The School Picnic Day was usually held on the last day of school in June. On that day, kids played simple games. No one cared who won and who lost. The true winners were the children themselves bathed in the joyous atmosphere of friendship and mutual respect.
Soon, before anyone knew it, the School Picnic Day would reach its climax with a grand feast at lunch time. Parents always packed picnic baskets for the kids. They filled them with as many good foods as they could afford. Lunchtime was a delightful occasion with children early sharing their baskets and exchanging treats with one another.
There was one family that was very poor. They had no picnic lunch that year. When my mom noticed this from a distance, she quickly tried to figure out how to help them. She knew they would be embarrassed if she gave them something from her own lunch basket.
Just then, the teacher announced there was going to be one final race before lunch. It would be the sack race, in which two people get inside a sack and hop as fast as they can to the finish line. The winner would receive a special lunch basket prepared by the teachers.
My mom wanted to enter this race. She waited until she saw Mary, the oldest sister of the family, get up. She asked Mary if she could be her partner, and Mary agreed. My mom had never been good at races, but as she put her legs into that sack with Mary, she told herself, “You can do it. You have to win!”

My students were often trapped by inner demons(恶魔) . Jake, aged 20, was one example of them. One day, the adult came to me. “I’m stupid, ”he whispered. “I’ve been in special education classes all my life. I’m not capable of getting a GED(General Educational Development). ”
“Who told you that?”I asked. “Everybody, my teachers, my parents, everybody. ”He sadly answered. “Well, Jake, I’m not telling you that. I think you may be dyslexic(诵读困难 的). ”I had been watching him struggle with reading. “But that has nothing to do with stupid. ”
I showed Jake how to use a ruler, or his finger, under the words to read—a method many teachers frowned upon. This would help him focus. It kept his eyes in the right place. He looked at me with down —turned lips, still not convinced. “Take frequent breaks, ”I suggested. “Remind yourself to focus. Practice by saying’focus, focus, focus, ‘mentally, whenever you realize you’re losing your train of thought. ”I also showed him how to scroll the page, using a sheet of paper with a cut in it, to reveal only one line of writing at a time. “Jake, I know you like music. Try writing a multiplication(乘法)rap. It will help you remember the tables. ”I later heard that such a rap already existed and was available on a CD.
Jake’s head was down. He looked up and spoke indefinitely saying, “Figured out that if I suck on hard candy when I study, I can concentrate much better. ”He knew that candy was not allowed. Wow, this kid had discovered his own cure. “You know, Jake, one of the classroom rules is no eating in class, but I’m going to revise that rule. From now on hard candy will be allowed, and I recommend that you bring some to help you study. It will be especially useful when you’re taking a test. ”

Tom’s love for soccer ran deep, and he played the game with a passion that was infectious (有感染力的) to everyone around him. But there was one thing that upset him-his worn-out soccer shoes. These shoes had been passed down to him by his older brother, and they were falling apart. With his birthday drawing near, Tom secretly wished for a new pair of soccer shoes to lift his spirits so that he could have a good performance in the game. However, he was well aware of his parents’ constant struggles to make ends meet and knew that such a wish might remain a dream forever.
One sunny afternoon, Tom and his best friend, David, were at school, watching an exciting soccer match. The exciting run and shout, the determination on the athletes’ faces, and their fine equipment were enough to make anyone’s heart race. It was at this moment that Tom said about his biggest birthday wish. He took a long deep breath and said, “How I wish I could have a new pair of soccer shoes for my birthday, but I know it’s impossible.”
David, sitting beside him, couldn’t help but overhear Tom’s words. The idea of helping his best friend achieve this long-held dream began to form in his mind. After school, David ran home and couldn’t wait to share the idea with his mother.
“Mom, I really want to do this for Tom. He’s been playing with those old shoes for so long. It would mean the world to him,” David explained seriously.
His mother smiled warmly, proud of her son’s compassion (同情) . “David, it’s a wonderful idea. It’s not just about the gift; it’s about the thought and effort you’re putting into making Tom’s day special.”
As David thought about how to earn the money, his mother suggested, “You know, David, there are various ways you can earn some extra money to save for the soccer shoes. Many of our neighbors are looking for someone to help with lawn mowing (刈草坪) and other services. Some even need help with newspaper delivery. You can offer your services and earn money that way.”

Last year, I started doing some volunteer work for a charity in my town that helps disabled children. I found out that the charity needed to buy some new wheelchairs, but that they really didn’t have the money. So, I started to think about what I could do to raise money.
When I mentioned this to my friends, they said, “Well, why don’t you run the London Marathon?!” They laughed and so did I — we all know that I’m not an athlete at all. I’d never done any running before. But later, I started to think that it might not be a bad idea.
I approached the charity and discussed the possibility of participating in the marathon on their behalf. They were excited with the idea and agreed to appoint me as their representative. With their support, I purchased the necessary running equipment and began my training journey.
Every night, I laced up my running shoes and hit the sidewalk, determined to build my endurance. After a month of consistent training, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I could comfortably run nearly five kilometers. However, the reality remained: the marathon covered a challenging distance of 42 kilometers.
With the race only five months away, I intensified my training efforts. I pushed myself to the limits, knowing that completing the marathon was not only a personal achievement but also a means to secure funds for four much-needed wheelchairs. The thought of making a difference in the lives of disabled children motivated me to persevere.
As the race day approached, I filled my mind with determination and excitement. I knew that crossing the finish line would symbolize the end of my hard work and the success of a noble cause. With the support of my friends and the charity, I could run 25 kilometers during my training sessions.

(2023-2024高二下河南省洛阳市期末试题)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落的开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】范文
In that split second of panic, Jeff had to make a decision. With a quick glance over Kirk’s shoulder, Jeff saw Kirk was also trying to slow down but was having a harder time due to his speed. Jeff’s reaction kicked in faster than his thoughts. He made a sharp turn to the right, narrowly missing the deer and coming to a sudden stop. The deer, caught in the surprise of the sudden movement, bounded off the road and into the safety of the underbrush. This left just enough room for Kirk to race down the mountain. When he crossed the imaginary finish line, Kyle and Greg were there to cheer him on.
“Kirk, you are the winner,” they cried! “you did it!” Panting and trying to catch his breath, Kirk finally got his words out, “No, boys! The winner is still up there on that mountain.” As the words escaped from Kirk’s lips, the cheers from Kyle and Greg faded into serious silence. Their eyes widened with surprise as they listened to the tale of the deer and the near-miss. Seeing Jeff ride down the hill, they three finally breathed a sigh of relief. Holding Jeff’s hands, Kirk said with sincerity, “Jeff, you made the right choice. You put safety first, and that’s what matters most.” Kyle and Greg broke into applause again, this time, for both of them. The boys laughed, their hearts filled with a new understanding of friendship and adventure.

【答案】I told him I’d lost $400, eight fifties. “That’s good enough for us,” he said, reached into his pocket and pulled out the roll of bills. Touching the bills carrying the father’s body temperature, I felt waves of warmth on this cold night. I took out two bills and tried to hand them to his son, but his son shook his head. “You wouldn’t want to ruin Christmas for me and my son, would you? They are yours, and my son and I won’t take them,” the father said.
They left before I could ask them their names. This is the most regrettable thing for me. I was too excited at the time and just kept thanking them without asking their names in a timely manner. However, while I don’t have their names, I’ll never forget the Christmas gift from the two total strangers. Who said that in the Chicago area, people didn’t return money when they found it? In fact, there are many honest and kind people around us. Al’s email has also proved this point.

Then, Janet happily put her arms around the dog. Suddenly, Jimmy started barking continually at Janet and also him. This wasn’t a friendly bark but it didn’t seem to attack anyone. It just kept barking, as if it wanted to tell them something. Before long, Janet fell onto the grass and started convulsing. Weeks later, the dog barked crazily again before Janet’s sudden epilepsy.
“Does the dog worsen Janet’s disease?” Lenny wondered and rushed to the hospital. After Lenny told everything, the doctor smiled. “Your dog seems to be benefiting your daughter instead.” After the doctor explained the reason, Lenny returned home, amazed. The following month, Jimmy tried to get their attention minutes before Janet’s convulsions again. When Jimmy barked at them unusually the fourth time, Lenny quickly prepared everything necessary to treat and calm the convulsions that would happen to Janet. In the following years, Jimmy stayed beside Janet, helping the owner who had saved it. Everything was the best arrangement.

【答案】范文
One day in my senior high school, my teacher Mrs. Brown advised me to take part in a poetry contest. My first reaction was to refuse, with the word “awful” ringing in my ears. Sensing my hesitation, Mrs. Brown said, “It’s a chance to prove yourself to others, isn’t it?” “Yes, maybe my father,” I thought. In the next few weeks, I buried myself in writing, though. The moment I finished my poem, I gathered the courage to present it to my father, wondering what response I might receive. Reading quickly, he said another “awful” as expected. Suddenly, I heard the most beautiful voice, “Make it brief!” Quickly, I did so. The revised version earned me a grand prize.
After the success, I came to understand the true meaning of “awful”. My father’s “awful” probably meant the high expectations he had of me instead of sharp criticism. From then on, I chose to seek further improvement in whatever I did. There was no doubt that my mother’s praise could cheer me up and boost my confidence, but it was the discouraging word “awful” that stimulated my potential and pushed me out of comfort zone. The two conflicting voices were just like two opposing winds leading me towards perfection.

Hesitating for a second, the manager agreed, “Just do it, and I’ll take all responsibilities.” He handed her the tools she needed, watching in disbelief as Catalina confidently began to work. Her fingers moved swiftly, each part fitting perfectly into place as if guided by an unseen force. Minutes ticked by, and the tension in the air thickened with every successful turn of the screw.
Thunderous applause erupted and rocked the hall. When Catalina finished, the telescope stood tall and proud, restored to its former glory. The manager beamed, his doubts vanished. “How did you do it?” he asked, amazement coloring his voice. Catalina smiled, her eyes shining with determination. “I’ve been preparing for this moment ever since Papá gave me this telescope. I knew I could fix it because I know every part of it, just like I know every star in the sky.” That day, Catalina not only fixed the telescope but also proved to everyone that she was destined to become a great astronomer.

Patel.

【答案】范文
Week by week, Ben realized that reading seemed easier with Max’s company. The presence of the gray cat made him feel more relaxed and comfortable. He noticed that Max’s purring had a calming effect on him, allowing him to focus better on the words in front of him. Ben was amazed by how much he enjoyed reading aloud to Max. Still, he was surprised when Ms. Delgado gave him the Most Improved Reader award. Ben felt a sense of pride and accomplishment as he held the certificate in his hands. He couldn’t wait to show it to Max.
But on Saturday, Ben couldn’t find Max at the shelter. He looked around the room, hoping to catch a glimpse of his feline friend. However, Max was nowhere to be found. Ben’s heart sank as he realized that someone might have adopted Max. Just then, Mrs. Patel walked into the visitors’ room, carrying Max. “I’m adopting him,” Mrs. Patel said. “You can come over every day to read to him.” Hearing what Mrs. Patel said, Ben jumped with excitement and threw his arms around Mrs. Patel. Of course, he didn’t forget to hug Max tightly who gave a contented purr.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】
Gerry took the phone and looked at the screen with curiosity. There was Dad! “Hi, Gerry!” Dad said. “Can you hear me all the way from Japan?” “Yes!” said Gerry. Something exciting happened. Dad held up a thick book with a dark blue cover. “Mom packed this book in my suitcase so I could still read you a story before bed. Would you like to hear it?” “Oh, yes!” said Gerry. With the phone propped up on the pillow, Gerry could hear Dad make all the different voices for the story’s characters. It was almost just as good as having Dad here in person.
“Dad, can we meet on the phone every night?”asked Gerry eagerly. “Of course!” Dad said. And he turned the page to begin the next chapter of the story. From then on, Mom and Dad took turns to read stories to Gerry before bedtime, and Gerry felt very satisfied. Two months later, Dad returned from the business trip in London, bringing back more storybooks for Gerry. Gerry hugged his father tightly and excitedly said, “Finally, we can get rid of our phones. Tonight, you can sit next to my bed and read me stories.”

【答案】参考范文:
Then the gentleman took the initiative to break the silence and started talking to me. He asked about my day, his eyes kind and sincere. At first, I hesitated to share with a stranger, but his warm smile and the festive spirit in the air encouraged me to open up. I told him about my father, the struggles of my working, and the quiet Thanksgiving we were having at home. He listened attentively, comforting me occasionally with uplifting and loving words. After quite a while, the bus stopped. The man pulled himself up, glanced at his bag and then said to me, “I get off here. Hope you a happy Thanksgiving.” Feeling inspired, I waved him goodbye.
He was nearly off the bus when suddenly I found he forgot his shopping bag. Before the bus doors shut, I rushed to the doors and called out to him, “Wait! You forgot your bag!” “I left it for you. Keep it, girl!” he responded, still with a warm smile. Then the bus doors closed behind him, and the gentleman faded away from my sight. Shocked and delighted, I returned to my seat to take the shopping bag, carefully unfolding it. There lived a box of chocolate, a bright tiny music box and a brand-new scarf. Recognizing the kindness of the gentleman, I felt a sense of hope for life.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】The teacher yelled, “Ready. Set. Go!” and the race was on. The trick with the sack race lies in the physical ability to maintain balance to keep from falling down. If you can keep standing, hopping and moving forward, you have a good chance to win. Most kids usually fall down right away, but this time my mom hopped in time with Mary. They pulled out in front and never looked back. They performed in perfect harmony as if they had rehearsed the race a thousand times. Their classmates were cheering. As they crossed the finish line, the crowds erupted into thunderous applause, shouting words of admiration.
Later, Mary came and thanked my mom for being her partner. Her eyes sparkled with excitement and joy. She said that her family really enjoyed the special picnic lunch. Then, in a gesture of profound appreciation, Mary handed my mom a sandwich. The two girls sat together in the warm sun, eating the last two sandwiches merrily. According to Mom, it was the best school picnic in the whole world. The picnic stood out as the most memorable and meaningful experience, symbolizing the power of kindness and bonds between friends.

The next day Jake came to class wearing a big smile.

【答案】The next day Jake came to class wearing a big smile. He approached me and dropped his eyes shyly, saying, “Hold out your hand please and here is something for you!” Surprised as I was, I did as told, instantly a piece of tiny candy appearing in my palm. “Thank you for allowing us to have candy in class!” Then, he went back to his seat, beginning to read before I responded. Sucking on hard candy in his mouth, finger running under the words, he immersed himself in books. Applying such techniques, day after day, he tried to overcome his difficulty in focusing on reading.
Jake finally passed his GED test successfully. When he learned of his success he began to cry, with tears welling up in his eyes. With an understanding smile, I walked up and held him in my arms, past memories of his trying to focus flashing in my mind. He was thrilled and so was I. He attained the highest marks in the class, thus invited to give an inspiring speech at the graduation ceremony. Anyway, he deserved the result after so much effort had been made. It dawns on me that students who get the appropriate amount of attention will blossom one day.

David’s eves lit up as he realized the potential. “You’re right, Mom! I can mow the lawn and do other jobs for the neighbors to save up the money. With each task completed, he was one step closer to achieving his goal of buying the soccer shoes for Tom. The thought of how close he was to making Tom’s wish come true filled him with enthusiasm.
The day of Tom’s birthday finally arrived, and David couldn’t wait to surprise his best friend. At school, David presented the gift to Tom. “Happy birthday, Tom,” he said with a wide smile. Tom, surprised and curious, eagerly tore open the wrapping paper. His eyes widened with astonishment when he saw the pair of new soccer shoes. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Tom said, “David, you did this for me? I can’t believe it! Thank you so much!” Tears of joy welled up in his eyes and he hugged his best friend.

【答案】However, when the big day came, I was not at all sure that I was ready. My heart was pounding as I stood at the starting line, surrounded by thousands of other runners. Doubts filled my mind, but I took a deep breath and reminded myself of the reason I was doing this. The gun went off with a deafening blast, and I tentatively started running, my steps hesitant at first but slowly gaining more confidence and picking up speed.
With every step, I fought against my physical limitations. My legs ached, and my lungs burned, but I refused to give up. I thought about the disabled children who were relying on me, and that gave me the strength to keep going. The crowd’s cheers encouraged me, and as I neared the finish line, I felt a sense of accomplishment like never before. Finally, I crossed the line, exhausted but elated, knowing that I had made a difference and raised the funds needed for those new wheelchairs.
