Chopsticks have been used in Asia for over 3,000 years. The earliest chopsticks were discovered in Henan China about 1200 BCE. Over the next 2,000 years, they spread throughout East and Southeast Asia.
The three most well-known types are Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Chinese chopsticks are longer with wide, rounded points at the end, mostly made of plastic or bamboo. While Japanese chopsticks are shorter and more pointed. Korean ones are flat rather than round and made of metal rather than wood. It’s said that ancient Royalty (皇室) used silver chopsticks to see if their food was poisoned (有毒的). In Southeast Asia, Vietnamese chopsticks are similar to Chinese ones.
Chopsticks are not just eating tools. A proper chopstick grip (握法) can greatly improve dining experience. First, place the top part of two sticks between your thumb and index finger. Hold the upper chopstick gently with your first three fingers while resting the lower one at your ring finger. Meanwhile, put your thumb at the side of your index-finger nail. The upper stick is moved up and down with the movements of the index finger and middle finger. This way, pieces of food can be easily grasped between the tips of the chopsticks.
________ The first rule is to grab and not stab (刺入) food with the tip of your chopsticks. Second, don’t set chopsticks vertically (垂直的) into the rice in your bowl. In some cultures, such positioning of chopsticks is considered as a symbol associated with death. Third, watch where you point your chopsticks. It’s rude to point them directly at others.
Following the guidelines above, you not only show respect for the cultural traditions about chopsticks, but also enrich your overall dining experience.

When searching “AI homework” online, you’ll see countless posts (帖子), mostly by students and teachers, discussing whether AI is helpful or harmful for students. So, is AI a helpful homework tool or just an excuse for students to be lazy?
Zhang Yue, a grade 10 student from Beijing, told China Youth Daily that over half of his classmates use AI to help with their homework, especially for reviewing books or planning class projects. With AI, students can work more quickly and perfectly.
But for Zhang Min, a grade 11 student in Jiaozuo, Henan, who is weak in writing compositions, AI has had a bad effect on her learning. In an interview with Hunan Daily, she said that after using it for a short time, she found that her ability to think independently (独立地) had deteriorated, and her Chinese language grades had dropped as well.
What’s more, the quality of Chinese and English compositions produced by AI can be quite poor, according to Peng Xiang, a high school teacher from Xuzhou, Jiangsu. AI-produced work may include incorrect information or simply be short of a deep theme or “soul”.
_________ Jiang Xinwei,18, from Jilin, said that she has used AI to help her with creative writing pieces for English class. “I already have in mind what I want to write, like the plot,” Jiang said. “I just use AI to help smoother transitions (过渡) and learn how to tell the story more naturally.” Jiang believes that AI serves as a resource library, but the main ideas and phrasing (措辞) are still her own.
When used effectively, AI can be helpful for teaching and learning. “Accepting new in technology is preparing ourselves for the future,” Peng said. “But schools and teachers must guide students to correctly use AI as a learning tool.”
38. What do we know about “AI homework” from the passage?
A. A helpful tool. B. A fun post.
C. A class project. D. A hot topic.
39 What does the underlined word “deteriorated” most likely mean in Paragraph 3?
A. improved greatly B. stayed the same
C. become lower D. disappeared soon
40. Which of the following is the most suitable for _________?
A. However, some students take advantage of AI in a smarter way.
B. There’s no worry about depending too much on the technology.
C. Most students avoid using AI for their homework except English.
D. The use of AI for doing homework brings different experiences.
41. Which of the following correctly shows their attitude (态度) to AI technology?
A. Zhang Yue→ Uncertain B. Zhang Min→ Grateful
C. Jiang Xinwei→ Worried D. Peng Xiang→ Supportive
D
In villages of African countries such as Kenya and Tanzania, families often depend on children to get money through farming, herding, or informal work instead of sending them to schools. School attendance rates (入学率) in these areas drop below 40%, particularly during harvest seasons. What’s worse, because of poverty (贫困) and poor economy, over 50% of the population in these areas is badly in need of electricity (电).
To solve these problems, Yolk, a US company, designed the Solar Cow—a solar-powered station shaped like a cow. Set in schools, this creative system serves double purposes: providing renewable (可再生的) energy and basic education. The Solar Cow stores small-sized batteries called Solar Milks, which can only be charged (充电) at the station. Families take part in the program by promising to send their children to school regularly, where students put their Solar Milks into the cow-shaped station during class hours. By the end of the school day, the batteries are fully charged and taken home, providing families with electricity for based needs.
A single Solar Cow serves 150-200 students. Yolk plans to put in 500 units across East Africa by 2026, working closely with NGOs like UNICEF and governments to pay for the costs.
Since the first Solar Cow appeared in 2018, the projects in 12 Kenyan and Tanzanian villages have made great differences. School attendance rates increased by 42% within six months. Dropout rates during harvest seasons fell by 67%. Households saved an average of $15 monthly.
The Solar Cow shows how technology helps deal with interconnected (相关联的) social problems. By transforming schools into energy stations, it supports education, reduces poverty, and gets renewable energy. And this will be a replicable (可复制的) example for more similar situations. As Yolk’s founder, Chang Hee Lee, says, “When a child’s education becomes the key to powering their home, we’re not just lighting a room—we’re lighting a child’s future.”
42. What is the purpose of Paragraph 1?
A. To introduce the background of the Solar Cow program.
B. To show the development of African village economy.
C. To give some information about the Solar Cow program.
D. To explain why Africa has low school attendance rates.
43. To join in the Solar Cow program, families need to ________.
A. pay for the Solar Milks B. send their children to school
C. work in the cow-shaped station D. keep cows to exchange electricity
44. How does the writer show the results of the Solar Cow program?
A. By listing numbers. B. By using English sayings.
C. By making predictions. D. By asking questions.
45. Which of the following is TRUE about the Solar Cow program?
A. Yolk doesn’t need to pay for its cost.
B. It’ll be set in other places besides schools.
C. It can be copied to use in more other fields.
D. Its main purpose is to solve the electricity problem.

The rain poured down again. Mary hated it—She couldn’t go out in the bad weather. She looked out of the window and asked Martha, one of her servants (仆人), “What do you do when it rains like this?”
“Eh! Most of us prefer to stay inside and read,” Martha answered. “But Dickon goes out just the same as if the sun was shining. He says he sees things on rainy days as they don’t show on fine days. He once found a wounded fox and brought it home.”
Mary forgot the rain as she listened. She even began to feel slightly interested and said before she thought, “I wish I had a fox. But I have nothing.”
The next morning Mary woke to bright sunshine and ran outside. Then, she found a boy whistling as he dug. When he saw Mary, he touched his cap. “I’m Dickon,” he said.
“The one who helps animals?” she asked.
“Aye, I’m their friend,” he said. Then a robin hopped to his shoulder. “This is Captain. He showed me where the buried (埋藏的) key is.”
Mary’s heart beat quickly. “Key?”
“Yes, for the garden,” said Dickon. “Captain’s nest is in the roses climbing over the wall. When I was weeding (除杂草) below, he kept flying to a place under the leaves. I dug there and found the key.”
Mary took the key Dickon handed over. It was a rusted (生锈的) one, which seemed to keep a secret.
They walked around the walled garden and found a half-buried stone door. Mary put the key into the lock. When the door finally opened, sunlight shone through the roses, brightening the silent garden full of weeds. (取材于扬州市“五个一百工程”指定阅读书目《秘密花园》)

38 What do we know about “AI homework” from the passage?
A. A helpful tool. B. A fun post.
C. A class project. D. A hot topic.
39. What does the underlined word “deteriorated” most likely mean in Paragraph 3?
A. improved greatly B. stayed the same
