Lauren Child is doing an important task. She is the author who wins the prize for children’s books. She also draws pictures of many successful books. Now she wants to get more young people doing…well, nothing. It’s a part of her new project to encourage children to put down their mobile phones, look into space and start thinking more creatively.
Whether it’s making sculptures out of toast, creating a mini world or building a 3D space of your own, there are lots of suggestions in Child’s new series of books to give you inspirations and encouragement. “Everything is creative thinking; you can’t invent something or solve a problem without that time to think,” she tells The Week Junior. “It means you’re being asked to spend some time thinking about things.”
Part of the reason why young people aren’t spending enough time thinking creatively, says Child, is phone use. It’s not that she is against phones—it’s just that you are too concentrated on it and you need to know what it is more important. “Sometimes you can be in a room with someone else and they’re so concentrated in using mobile phones that you don’t think they’re really there with you,” she says. “It’s so easy to lose attention to a phone, even at mealtimes, but you’re not living in the now. You’re not communicating with your immediate world.”
Now Child wants to challenge herself to take just 15 minutes to put phone aside and be bored, and then try to get out of that boring feeling. “When I’m walking along the street try to look up more to notice buildings I’ve never seen before. Or I’ll look down at the street to see what someone has dropped or thrown away. If I see a pair of gloves, I’ll think, who left them there? This is where a story can start.”

C. She is a producer of mobile phones. D. She is a teacher of creative thinking.
30. What does Lauren Child say about mobile phones?

Main character in this chapter: “I”—Juli Baker(a teenage girl)
The next morning, I raced to the bus stop extra early and climbed the tree. I caught the sun rising through the clouds, sending stripes of fire from one end of the world to the other.
Then I heard a noise below. I looked down, and parked right below me were two trucks. There were four men standing around talking, and I almost called down to them, “I’m sorry, but you can’t park there…That’s a bus stop!” Just at that time, one of the men reached into the back of a truck and started taking out tools. Gloves. Ropes. A chain. And then chain saws(电锯). Three chain saws. Then one of the kids who rides the bus showed up and started talking to them, and pretty soon he was pointing up at me.
One of the men called, “Hey! You’d better come down from there. We’re going to take this thing down.”
I held on to the tree tightly(牢固地), because suddenly it felt as though I might fall. I managed to cry out, “The tree?”
“Yeah, now come on down.”
“But who told you to cut it down?”
“The owner!” he called back.
“But why?”
“Because he’s going to build himself a house, and this tree is in the way. Now come on, girl, we’ve got work to do!”
By that time most of the kids had gathered for the bus. They weren’t saying anything to me, just looking up at me and turning from time to time to talk to each other. My heart was crazy with fear. I couldn’t leave and let them cut down the tree! I cried, “You can’t cut it down! You just can’t!”
One of the men shook his head and said, “I am this close to calling the police. Now are you going to come down or are we going to cut you down?”
The bus was three blocks away. I’d never missed school for any reason other than illness, but I knew in my heart that this time was different. “You’re going to have to cut me down!” I cried. Then I had an idea. They’d never cut it down if all of us were in the tree. “Hey, guys!” I called to my classmates. “Get up here with me! They can’t cut it down if we’re all up here!”
One by one, the kids just shook their heads and got on the bus.

If you want to tell the history of the whole world, a history that does not privilege one part of humanity, you cannot do it through texts alone, because only some of the world has ever had texts, while most of the world, for most of the time, has not. Writing is one of humanity’s later achievements, and until fairly recently even many literate (有文字的) societies recorded their concerns not only in writing but in things.
Ideally a history would bring together texts and objects, and some chapters of this book are able to do just that, but in many cases we simply can’t. The clearest example of this between literate and non-literate history is perhaps the first conflict, at Botany Bay, between Captain Cook’s voyage and the Australian Aboriginals. From the English side, we have scientific reports and the captain’s record of that terrible day. From the Australian side, we have only a wooden shield (盾) dropped by a man in fight after his first experience of gunshot. If we want to reconstruct what was actually going on that day, the shield must be questioned and interpreted as deeply and strictly as the written reports.
In addition to the problem of miscomprehension from both sides, there are victories accidentally or deliberately twisted, especially when only the victors know how to write. Those who are on the losing side often have only their things to tell their stories. The Caribbean Taino, the Australian Aboriginals, the African people of Benin and the Incas, all of whom appear in this book, can speak to us now of their past achievements most powerfully through the objects they made: a history told through things gives them back a voice. When we consider contact (联系) between literate and non-literate societies such as these, all our first-hand accounts are necessarily twisted, only one half of a dialogue. If we are to find the other half of that conversation, we have to read not just the texts, but the objects.
37. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. How past events should be presented.
B. What humanity is concerned about.
C. Whether facts speak louder than words.
D. Why written language is trusted.
38. What does the author mean by mentioning Captain Cook in paragraph 2?
A. His report was scientific. B. He represented the local people.
C. He ruled over Botany Bay. D. His record was one-sided.
39. What does the word “conversation” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Problem. B. History. C. Voice. D. Society.
40. Which of the following books is the text most likely selected from?
A. How Maps Tell Stories of the World B. A Short History of Australia
C. A History of the World in 100 Objects D. How Art Works Tell Stories

Once kids hit the teenage years, parenting becomes more difficult than ever. Establishing (建立) effective house rules is one of the best ways to educate teenagers. House rules must respect teenagers’ needs to be independent and make sure they do proper behaviors.
How can effective house rules be established?
First of all, get your teenager to take part in making the rules, which can help keep them following them. Ask their opinion about what kinds of things they think are important when creating the rules and try to include some of their ideas.
When creating the list of rules, don’t list every single rule imaginable. Instead, try to limit it to the ten most important rules. I’ve seen some parents come up with several pages of rules which turn out to be more like a rule book rather than a list. Remember, it is important to make the list easy to remember and to be a basic guide.
Then, it is important that you write out the list of rules and hang them in a prominent (显眼的) location. Keeping the rules on the refrigerator or displayed somewhere everyone can see them is a good reminder. Revise the rules whenever there’s a need, not very frequently though.
Give a clear explanation of the consequences (后果) when a rule gets broken. But ensure (保证) that none of your consequences are equal to abusive (辱骂的) parenting. For example, take off the rule that says—“if you don’t get home by 11 at night, make arrangements to stay elsewhere until morning”. Let helping with small household chores like cleaning up their own rooms serve as consequences for disobeying rules.
Following these tips on establishing effective house rules accompanied by constant positive reinforcement (执行) will help improve your teenager’s behavior. Hope you can direct your teenager to become a responsible and independent person with the help of house rules!

When I first set foot on Mexican soil, I spoke Spanish well. So when I asked a local taco seller for a taco, and he said “ahorita,” which is directly t____66____ into “right now,” I took him at his word, believing that i____67____ arrival was immediate.
I sat near his shop and waited. Half an hour passed and s____68____ no taco arrived, so I asked again about it. “Ahorita,” he told me again. His face was a mix of confusion (困惑的) and maybe even embarrassment.
I was torn (犹豫的). Waiting longer wasn’t p____69____, but I felt it was impolite to walk away, especially if the taco was now being delivered just for me. But finally, after w____70____ too long, I made a rush for the nearest bus to take me home. A____71____ I left, I signalled at my wrist and shrugged (耸肩) to the taco seller. Obviously I couldn’t wait any longer and it really wasn’t my fault. His face was, once again, one of total confusion.
This experience faded (褪去) from my memory u____72____ years later when I came back to live in Mexico. I discovered that understanding “Ahorita” took not a fluency (流利) in the language, but rather a fluency in the c____73____. When someone from Mexico says “ahorita,” it should almost n____74____ be taken literally; its meaning c____75____ greatly with context. As a linguist told me, “Ahorita could mean tomorrow, in an hour, within five years or never.” It is even used as a polite way of saying “no, thanks” when refusing an offer.
“Ahorita Time” is a reflection of different cultural understandings of time. Since I moved to Mexico, my attitude towards time has changed dramatically. “Ahorita Time” has actually allowed me to live far more in the “right now” than I ever did before.

Following these tips on establishing effective house rules accompanied by constant positive reinforcement (执行) will help improve your teenager’s behavior Hope you can direct your teenager to become a responsible and independent person with the help of house rules!
